Ticket out the Door
• 4 tons = ___ lbs
• Julianne has a box of 64 markers. She would measure the length of these using what measurement?
• A cat weighs 148 oz. How many pounds and oz is this?
Metric Conversions Ladder Method
The metric system is easier and more orderly than our English system of measurement because it is based on the number 10. Our English system has no rhyme or reason to the way we make conversions within the system. (For example, 12 inches = 1 foot, 3 feet = 1 yard, etc.) In the metric system we’ll always use 10 to go from one unit to the next!)
• Length – The basic unit is the meter. (Approximation: One meter is a little more than a yard, which is about the distance from the floor to the doorknob)
Volume – The basic unit is the liter. (Approximation: One liter is a little more than a quart.)
Mass – The basic unit is the gram. (Approximation: One gram is
approximately the mass of one raisin
or one jumbo paperclip or one
sheet of notebook paper.)
Prefixes
When you add the prefix KILO to these (gram, liter, meter) you have the LARGEST form of measurement in the metric system
Think KILLER WHALE!!! HUGE!!! BIGGGG!!! BIGGER THAN THE REST!!!
KILOGRAM KILOMETER KILOLITER
Prefixes
When you add the prefix MILLI to these (gram, liter, meter) you have the smallest form of that measurement.
Think millipede… small, tiny
Millimeter Milliliter Milligram
BENCHMARK
Meter- about the distance from the ground to the door knob
Kilometer- 1 kilometer= 0.62 of a mile
Liter- think about a 2 liter bottle, its half of that
Gram- weighs as much as a piece of paper
• Once upon a time in a faraway land there lived a king who loved chocolate milk. His name was King Henry.
• Throughout his kingdom, King Henry made sure that all of the cows were fed great supplies of chocolate to continue to provide him with his beloved chocolate milk drink.
• King Henry drank chocolate milk with his breakfast. He drank chocolate milk with his lunch. He drank chocolate milk with his dinner. He even drank chocolate milk for his bedtime snack. King Henry drank chocolate milk by the liters!
King Henry wanted all living creatures in his kingdom to enjoy chocolate milk as much as he enjoyed chocolate milk. However, a liter was not the best serving size for every creature. The Royal Carpenter was called for and the command was given for new serving vessels to be created to fit every creature in the kingdom.
So, the carpenter came up with a secret special ladder so you can help with all of King Henry’s conversions. You don’t want to let a king down, do you??? If you can figure out the ladder he might just let you be king for a day!!!

Ladder Method
How do you use the “ladder” method?
1st – Determine your starting point.
2nd – Count the “jumps” to your ending point.
3rd – Move the decimal the same number of jumps in the same direction.
4 km = _________ m
12
3
How many jumps does it take?

4.1
__.2
__.3
__. = 4000 m
Try these conversions using the ladder method.
1000 mg = _______ g 1 L = _______ mL 160 cm = _______ mm
14 km = _______ m 109 g = _______ kg 250 m = _______ km
