Chapter 1. Overview of the agent

The Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent provides you with thecapability to monitor Summarization and Pruning Agent. IBM® Tivoli® Monitoringis the base software for the Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent.

IBM Tivoli Monitoring overview

IBM Tivoli Monitoring provides a way to monitor the availability and performanceof all the systems in your enterprise from one or several designated workstations.It also provides useful historical data that you can use to track trends and totroubleshoot system problems.

You can use IBM Tivoli Monitoring to achieve the following tasks:v Monitor for alerts on the systems that you are managing by using predefined

situations or custom situations.v Establish your own performance thresholds.v Trace the causes leading to an alert.v Gather comprehensive data about system conditions.v Use policies to take actions, schedule work, and automate manual tasks.

The Tivoli Enterprise Portal is the interface for IBM Tivoli Monitoring products.You can use the consolidated view of your environment as seen in the TivoliEnterprise Portal to monitor and resolve performance issues throughout theenterprise.

See the IBM Tivoli Monitoring publications listed in “Prerequisite publications” onpage 71 for complete information about IBM Tivoli Monitoring and the TivoliEnterprise Portal.

New in this releaseFor version 6.2.3 Fix Pack 1 of this monitoring agent, the following enhancementshave been made since version 6.2.3, including the fix packs:v With IBM Tivoli Monitoring v6.2.3, you can now disable the creation of the data

warehouse log tables so that fewer database resources are needed (defaultconfiguration for the Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent). Ifupgrading from an existing installation, you can truncate the existing tables inthe database to allow their storage space to be reclaimed.

v Updated Agent Configuration view in the Configuration Workspace to displaythe value of the Database Compression variable.

Components of Warehouse Summarization and Pruning AgentAfter you install and set up the Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent,you have an environment that contains the client, server, and monitoring agentimplementation for IBM Tivoli Monitoring

Tivoli Enterprise Portal clientThe portal has a user interface based on Java for viewing and monitoringyour enterprise.

Tivoli Enterprise Portal ServerThe portal server is placed between the client and the Tivoli EnterpriseMonitoring Server and enables retrieval, manipulation, and analysis of datafrom the monitoring agents. The Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server is thecentral repository for all user data.

Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring ServerThe monitoring server acts as a collection and control point for alertsreceived from the monitoring agents, and collects their performance andavailability data. The Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server is also arepository for historical data.

IBM Tivoli Enterprise ConsoleThe Tivoli Enterprise Console® is an optional component that acts as acentral collection point for events from a variety of sources, includingevents from other Tivoli software applications, Tivoli partner applications,custom applications, network management platforms, and relationaldatabase systems. You can view these events through the Tivoli EnterprisePortal (by using the event viewer), and you can forward events from IBMTivoli Monitoring situations to the Tivoli Enterprise Console component.

Schema Publication toolThis tool generates DDL scripts that can be used against a databasecapable of compression.

Agent Management ServicesYou can use IBM Tivoli Monitoring Agent Management Services to manage theWarehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent.

Agent Management Services is available for the following IBM Tivoli MonitoringOS agents: Windows, Linux, and UNIX. The services are designed to keep theWarehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent available, and to provideinformation about the status of the product to the Tivoli Enterprise Portal. Formore information about Agent Management Services, see the IBM Tivoli MonitoringAdministrator's Guide, "Agent Management Services" chapter.

User interface optionsInstallation of the base software and other integrated applications provides thefollowing interfaces that you can use to work with your resources and data.

The following interfaces are available:

Tivoli Enterprise Portal user interfaceYou can run the Tivoli Enterprise Portal as a desktop application or abrowser application. The client interface is a graphical user interface (GUI)based on Java on a Windows or Linux workstation. The browserapplication is automatically installed with the Tivoli Enterprise PortalServer. The desktop application is installed by using the Tivoli Monitoringinstallation media or with a Java Web Start application. To start the TivoliEnterprise Portal browser client in your Internet browser, enter the URL fora specific Tivoli Enterprise Portal browser client installed on your Webserver.

Manage Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Services windowYou can use the window for the Manage Tivoli Enterprise MonitoringServices utility to configure the agent and start Tivoli services notdesignated to start automatically.

IBM Tivoli Enterprise ConsoleYou can use the Tivoli Enterprise Console to help ensure the optimalavailability of an IT service for an organization. The Tivoli EnterpriseConsole is an event management application that integrates system,network, database, and application management.

To install and configure the Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent, use theprocedures in the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Installation and Setup Guide .

v A single computer that hosts the hub monitoring server, portal server, and amonitoring agent requires approximately 300 MB of space. A monitoredcomputer that hosts only the monitoring agent requires approximately 30 MB ofspace, including the specific enablement code for the monitoring agent. Morespace is required for each additional monitoring agent that you deploy on themonitored computer.

After you install the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Version 6.2.3 and the Tivoli EnterprisePortal, you install the following software that is required for WarehouseSummarization and Pruning Agent to operate:v Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agentv Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent Support for Tivoli Enterprise

Monitoring Serverv Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent Support for Tivoli Enterprise

Portal Serverv Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent Support for Tivoli Enterprise

Portal

Note: If you are upgrading to IBM Tivoli Monitoring Version 6.2.3 from a previousrelease of IBM Tivoli Monitoring and the Warehouse Summarization and PruningAgent is already installed, you might need to install these features to obtain theself monitoring features.

Silent installation: If you are performing a silent installation using a response file,see the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Installation and Setup Guide, "Performing a silentinstallation of IBM Tivoli Monitoring."

To use the search function for this agent's online help, ensure that you haveselected the IBM Eclipse help server check box when installing the TivoliEnterprise Portal Server. The 'Searching Agent Help' topic in this agent's onlinehelp contains a link to the Eclipse help, where the search function is enabled. Fromthe Table of Contents in the left-hand pane of the help, select the 'Searching AgentHelp' topic to find the link to the Eclipse help in the right-hand pane.

Note: When using the itmcmd config command to configure this monitoring agent,note that the command line does not have a validation mechanism like the GUIdoes.

Disable data warehouse log tablesWith IBM Tivoli Monitoring Version 6.2.3 Fix Pack 1, there is now the ability todisable the creation of the data warehouse log tables so that fewer databaseresources are needed. This is the now the default configuration for both theWarehouse Proxy Agent and the Summarization and Pruning Agents. If upgradingfrom an existing installation, you can truncate the existing tables in the database toallow their storage space to be reclaimed.

About this task

If you want to revert to the previous behavior the configuration files need to beedited. For the Summarization and Pruning Agent, edit the Summarization andPruning Agent configuration file (sy.ini on UNIX and Linux systems, KSYENV onWindows systems) and change the variable KSY_WHLOG_ENABLE to Y. Thedefault value is N.

Chapter 3. Workspaces reference

A workspace is the working area of the Tivoli Enterprise Portal applicationwindow. The Navigator tree that is displayed at the left of the workspace containsa list of the workspaces provided by the agent.

About workspaces

A workspace is the working area of the Tivoli Enterprise Portal applicationwindow. Use the Navigator tree that is displayed at the left of the workspace toselect the workspace you want to see. As part of the application window, the rightside of the status bar shows the Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server name and portnumber to which the displayed information applies and the ID of the current user.

When you select an item in the Navigator tree, a default workspace is displayed.When you right-click a Navigator item, a menu that includes a Workspace item isdisplayed. The Workspace item contains a list of workspaces for that Navigatoritem. Each workspace has at least one view. Some views have links to otherworkspaces. You can also use the Workspace Gallery tool as described in the IBMTivoli Monitoring User's Guide to open workspaces.

The workspaces in the Navigator are shown in a Physical view that shows yourenterprise as a physical mapping or a dynamically populated logical view that isagent-specific. You can also create a Logical view. The Physical view is the defaultview.

This monitoring agent provides predefined workspaces. You cannot modify ordelete the predefined workspaces, but you can create new workspaces by editingthem and saving the changes with a different name.

A table view within a workspace corresponds to a group of attributes; the columnsin the table view show some or all of the attributes available in the attribute group.

Errors Details the errors that have occurred during Summarization andPruning. If applicable, the SQL State and SQL Code are provided.The SQL Code is database specific and documented by thedatabase vendor. By default, the most recent 100 errors aredisplayed. The number of errors displayed can be changed via theKSY_NODE_ERROR_UNITS configuration value and can also bechanged via the agent configuration panel "Maximum number ofnode errors to display" setting.

Configuration Navigator itemThe workspace descriptions are organized by the Navigator item to which theworkspaces are relevant.

Configuration workspaceProvides configuration data for the Summarization and Pruning Agent.

Run LengthDisplays the total run length of the last few Summarization andPruning runs on the system. By default, only the last 10 runs aredisplayed. This can be changed via theKSY_SUMMARIZATION_UNITS configuration value and can alsobe configured in the agent configuration panel "Maximum numberof Summarization and Pruning runs to display" setting.

Table Run LengthDisplays the run length for each table of the last Summarizationand Pruning run on the system.

Rows PrunedDisplays the total number of rows pruned per run by theSummarization and Pruning Agent over the past few runs. Thiscan be changed via the KSY_SUMMARIZATION_UNITSconfiguration value and can also be configured via the agentconfiguration panel "Maximum number of Summarization andPruning runs to display" setting. The number of runs to display, bydefault, is 10. .

Attributes are the application properties that are being measured and reported bythe Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent.

Attributes are organized into groups according to their purpose. The attributes in agroup can be used in the following two ways:v Chart or table views

Attributes are displayed in chart and table views. The chart and table views usequeries to specify which attribute values to request from a monitoring agent.You use the Query editor to create a query, modify an existing query, or applyfilters and set styles to define the content and appearance of a view based on anexisting query.

v SituationsYou use attributes to create situations that monitor the state of your operatingsystem, database, or application. A situation describes a condition you want totest. When you start a situation, the Tivoli Enterprise Portal compares the valuesyou have assigned to the situation attributes with the values collected by theWarehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent and registers an event if thecondition is met. You are alerted to events by indicator icons that are displayedin the Navigator.

Attribute groups for the Warehouse Summarization and Pruning AgentThe Warehouse Summarization and Pruning agent contains the following attributegroups. The table name depends on the maximum table name limits of the targetdatabase being used for the Tivoli Data Warehouse. If the maximum name is 30characters, then any warehouse table name longer than 30 characters is shortenedto 30 characters.v Attribute group name: Connectivity

Historical groupWhether the attribute group is a historical type that you can roll off to adata warehouse.

Attribute descriptionsDescription, type, and Warehouse name (if applicable) for each attribute inthe attribute group.

Connectivity attribute groupThis attribute group monitors connectivity of Summarization and Pruning agent tothe Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server and the Warehouse database.

Historical groupThis attribute group is eligible for use with Tivoli Data Warehouse.

Disk capacity planning for historical dataDisk capacity planning for a monitoring agent is a prediction of the amount of diskspace to be consumed for each attribute group with historical data that is beingcollected. Required disk storage is an important factor when you are defining datacollection rules and your strategy for historical data collection.

The Capacity planning for historical data table provides the following informationrequired to calculate disk space for this agent:

Table Table name as it is displayed in the warehouse database, if the attributegroup is configured to be written to the warehouse. The table name listedhere corresponds to the table name in “Attribute groups for the WarehouseSummarization and Pruning Agent” on page 11.

Attribute groupName of the attribute group used to create the table in the warehousedatabase if it is short enough to fit in the table naming constraints of thedatabase being used for the warehouse. The attribute group name listedhere corresponds to the Warehouse table name in “Attribute groups for theWarehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent” on page 11.

Bytes per row (agent)Estimate of the record length for each row or instance written to the agentdisk for historical data collection. This estimate can be used for agent diskspace planning purposes.

Database bytes per row (warehouse)Estimate of the record length for detailed records written to the warehousedatabase, if the attribute group is configured to be written to thewarehouse. Detailed records are records that have been uploaded from theagent for long-term historical data collection. This estimate can be used forwarehouse disk-space planning purposes.

Aggregate bytes per row (warehouse)Estimate of the record length for aggregate records written to thewarehouse database, if the attribute group is configured to be written tothe warehouse. Aggregate records are created by the Summarization agentfor attribute groups that have been configured for summarization. Thisestimate can be used for warehouse disk-space planning purposes.

In addition to the information in the tables, you must know the number of rows ofdata that you plan to collect. An attribute group can have single or multiple rowsof data depending on the application environment that is being monitored. Forexample, if your attribute group is monitoring each processor in your computerand you have a dual processor computer, the number of rows is two.

Chapter 5. Situations reference

A situation is a logical expression involving one or more system conditions.Situations are used to monitor the condition of systems in your network. You canmanage situations from the Tivoli Enterprise Portal by using the Situation Editor orfrom the command-line interface using the tacmds for situations. You can manageprivate situations in the private configuration XML file.

About situations

The monitoring agents that you use to monitor your system environment include aset of predefined situations that you can use as-is. You can also create newsituations to meet your requirements.

Predefined situations contain attributes that check for system conditions commonto many enterprises. Using predefined situations can improve the speed withwhich you can begin using the Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent. Youcan change the conditions or values being monitored by a predefined situation tothe conditions or values best suited to your enterprise.

You can display predefined situations and create your own situations using theSituation editor. The left panel of the Situation editor initially lists the situationsassociated with the Navigator item that you selected. When you click a situationname or create a situation, the right panel opens with the following tabs:

FormulaFormula describing the condition being tested.

DistributionList of managed systems (operating systems, subsystems, or applications)to which the situation can be distributed. All the WarehouseSummarization and Pruning Agent managed systems are assigned bydefault.

Expert adviceComments and instructions to be read in the event workspace.

ActionCommand to be sent to the system.

EIF Customize forwarding of the event to an Event Integration Facility receiver.(Available when the Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server has beenconfigured to forward events.)

Chapter 6. Take Action commands reference

Take Action commands can be run from the portal client or included in a situationor a policy.

About Take Action commands

When included in a situation, the command runs when the situation becomes true.A Take Action command in a situation is also referred to as reflex automation. Whenyou enable a Take Action command in a situation, you automate a response tosystem conditions. For example, you can use a Take Action command to send acommand to restart a process on the managed system or to send a text message toa cell phone.

In advanced automation, policies are used to take actions, schedule work, andautomate manual tasks. A policy comprises a series of automated steps calledactivities that are connected to create a workflow. After an activity is completed,the Tivoli Enterprise Portal receives return-code feedback, and advancedautomation logic responds with subsequent activities that are prescribed by thefeedback.

A basic Take Action command shows the return code of the operation in a messagebox that is displayed after the action is completed or in a log file. After you closethis window, no further information is available for this action.

Policies are used as an advanced automation technique for implementing morecomplex workflow strategies than you can create through simple automation. Allagents do not provide predefined policies, but you can create policies for anyagent.

About policies

A policy is a set of automated system processes that can take actions, schedulework for users, or automate manual tasks. You use the Workflow Editor to designpolicies. You control the order in which the policy executes a series of automatedsteps, which are also called activities. Policies are connected to create a workflow.After an activity is completed, the Tivoli Enterprise Portal receives return-codefeedback, and advanced automation logic responds with subsequent activitiesprescribed by the feedback.

Using logging

Logging is the primary troubleshooting feature in the Warehouse Summarizationand Pruning Agent. Logging refers to the text messages and trace data generated bythe Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent. Messages and trace data aresent to a file.

Trace data captures transient information about the current operating environmentwhen a component or application fails to operate as designed. IBM SoftwareSupport personnel use the captured trace information to determine the source ofan error or unexpected condition. See “Trace logging” for more information.

Consulting the lists of identified problems and workarounds

Trace loggingTrace logs are used to capture information about the operating environment whencomponent software fails to operate as designed.

The principal log type is the RAS (Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability) tracelog. These logs are in the English language only. The RAS trace log mechanism isavailable for all components of IBM Tivoli Monitoring. Most logs are located in alogs subdirectory on the host computer. IBM Software Support personnel use the information captured by trace logging totrace a problem to its source or to determine why an error occurred. Allcomponents in the IBM Tivoli Monitoring environment have a default tracing level.The tracing level can be changed on a per-component level to adjust the type oftrace information collected, the degree of trace detail, the number of trace logs tobe kept, and the amount of disk space used for tracing.

v install_dir represents the directory path where you installed the IBM Tivoli Monitoringcomponent. install_dir can represent a path on the computer that hosts the monitoringsystem, the monitoring agent, or the portal.

v instance refers to the name of the database instance that you are monitoring.

v instance_name refers to the name of the agent instance.

See the following key points about the preceding excerpts:v The monitoring server appends the SY product code to the server name

to form a unique name (SERVER5B:XI ) for this instance of theWarehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent. By using this uniquename, you can distinguish multiple monitoring products that might berunning on SERVER5B.

v The log shows when the agent started (ON-LINE) and later stopped(OFF-LINE) in the environment.

v For the sake of brevity, an ellipsis (...) represents the series of trace logentries that were generated while the agent was running.

v Between the ON-LINE and OFF-LINE log entries, the agent wascommunicating with the monitoring server.

v The ON-LINE and OFF-LINE log entries are always available in thetrace log. All trace levels that are described in “Setting RAS traceparameters by using the GUI” on page 51 provide these entries.

On Windows systems, you can use the following alternate method to view tracelogs:1. In the Windows Start menu, click Program Files > IBM Tivoli Monitoring >

Manage Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Services. The Manage Tivoli EnterpriseMonitoring Services window is displayed.

2. Right-click a component and click Advanced > View Trace Log in the menu.For example, if you want to view the trace log of the WarehouseSummarization and Pruning Agent, right-click the name of that agent in thewindow. You can also use the viewer to access remote logs.

Note: The viewer converts time stamps in the logs to a format that is easier toread.

Setting RAS trace parameters by using the GUIOn Windows systems, you can use the graphical user interface to set trace options.

About this task

The Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent uses RAS1 tracing andgenerates the logs described in Table 3 on page 45. The default RAS1 trace level isERROR. The default RAS1 trace level is ERROR.

Procedure1. Open the Manage Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Services window.2. Select Advanced > Edit Trace Parms. The Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server

Trace Parameters window is displayed.3. Select a new trace setting in the pull-down menu in the Enter RAS1 Filters

field or type a valid string.v General error tracing. KBB_RAS1=ERRORv Intensive error tracing. KBB_RAS1=ERROR (UNIT:kqz ALL)

v Maximum error tracing. KBB_RAS1=ERROR (UNIT:kqz ALL) (UNIT:kra ALL)

Note: As this example shows, you can set multiple RAS tracing options in asingle statement.

4. Modify the value for Maximum Log Size Per File (MB) to change the log filesize (changes LIMIT value).

5. Modify the value for Maximum Number of Log Files Per Session to change thenumber of log files per startup of a program (changes COUNT value).

6. Modify the value for Maximum Number of Log Files Total to change thenumber of log files for all startups of a program (changes MAXFILES value).

7. Optional: Click Y (Yes) in the KDC_DEBUGd Setting menu to log informationthat can help you diagnose communications and connectivity problemsbetween the monitoring agent and the monitoring server. The KDC_DEBUG settingand the Maximum error tracing setting can generate a large amount of tracelogging. Use these settings only temporarily, while you are troubleshootingproblems. Otherwise, the logs can occupy excessive amounts of hard diskspace.

8. Click OK. You see a message reporting a restart of the monitoring agent so thatyour changes take effect.

What to do next

Monitor the size of the logs directory. Default behavior can generate a total of 45 -60 MB for each agent that is running on a computer. For example, each databaseinstance that you monitor can generate 45 - 60 MB of log data. See the "Procedure"section to learn how to adjust file size and numbers of log files to prevent loggingactivity from occupying too much disk space.

Regularly prune log files other than the RAS1 log files in the logs directory. Unlikethe RAS1 log files that are pruned automatically, other log types can growindefinitely, for example, the logs in Table 3 on page 45 that include a process IDnumber (PID).

Procedure1. Open the trace options file.

3. Edit the line that begins with KBB_RAS1_LOG= to manage the generation of logfiles:v MAXFILES: The total number of files that are to be kept for all startups of a

given program. When this value is exceeded, the oldest log files arediscarded. The default value is 9.

v LIMIT: The maximum size, in megabytes (MB) of a RAS1 log file. The defaultvalue is 5.

v IBM Software Support might guide you to modify the following parameters:– COUNT: The number of log files to keep in the rolling cycle of one program

startup. The default is 3.– PRESERVE: The number of files that are not to be reused in the rolling cycle

of one program startup. The default value is 1.

Note: The KBB_RAS1_LOG parameter also provides for the specification of thelog file directory, log file name, and the inventory control file directory andname. Do not modify these values or log information can be lost.

4. Restart the monitoring agent so that your changes take effect.

What to do next

Dynamic modification of trace settingsYou can dynamically modify the trace settings for an IBM Tivoli Monitoringcomponent, such as, Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server, Tivoli Enterprise PortalServer, most monitoring agents, and other components. You can access thesecomponents, with the exception of a few monitoring agents, from the tracingutility.

Dynamic modification of the trace settings is the most efficient method, becauseyou can do it without restarting the component. Settings take effect immediately.Modifications by this method are not persistent.

Note: When the component is restarted, the trace settings are read again from the.env file. Dynamically modifying these settings does not change the settings in the.env files. To modify these trace settings permanently, modify them in the .envfiles.

ras1

Run this command to modify the trace settings for a Tivoli Monitoring component.

The syntax is as follows:ras1 set|list(UNIT|COMP: class_name ANY|ALL|Detail|ERROR|Flow|INPUT|Metrics|OUTPUT|STATE){(UNIT|COMP: class_name ANY|ALL|Detail|ERROR|Flow|INPUT|Metrics|OUTPUT|STATE)}

You can specify more than one component class to which to apply the tracesettings.

Command options

setTurns on or off tracing depending upon the value of its parameters. If theparameter is ANY, it turns it off. All other parameters turn on tracing based onthe specified type or level.

listDisplays the default level and type of tracing that is set by default.

Parameters

The parameters that determine the component classes to which to apply the tracesettings are as follows:

COMP: class_nameModifies the trace setting for the name of the component class, as specified byclass_name , for example, COMP:KDH. The output contains trace for the specifiedclass.

UNIT: class_nameModifies the trace setting for any unit that starts with the specified class_namevalue, for example, UNIT: kra. The output contains trace for any unit thatbegins with the specified filter pattern.

The parameters that determine the trace level and type are as follows:

ALLDisplays all trace levels, including every trace point defined for thecomponent. This setting might result in a large amount of trace, so specifyother parameters to exclude unwanted trace. You might require the ALLparameter to isolate a problem. It is the equivalent to setting "Error DetailFlow State Input Output Metrics".

ANYTurns off tracing.

DetailDisplays detailed information about each function.

When entered with the list option, the trace is tagged with Det.

ERRORLogs internal error conditions.

When entered with the list option, the trace is tagged with ER. The output canalso be tagged with EVERYE+EVERYU+ER.

FlowDisplays control flow data for each function entry and exit.

When entered with the list option, the trace is tagged with Fl.

INPUTDisplays input data for each function.

When entered with the list option, the trace is tagged with IN.

MetricsDisplays metrics on each function.

When entered with the list option, the trace is tagged with ME.

OUTPUTDisplays output data for each function.

When entered with the list option, the trace is tagged with OUT.

StateDisplays the status for each function.

When entered with the list option, the trace is tagged with St.

Turning on tracingTo use the tracing utility, you must use a local logon credential for the computer.This tracing method uses the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Service Console. Access theService Console by using a web browser.

When you start the Service Console, it displays the information about thecomponents that are currently running on that computer. For example, thesecomponents are listed as follows:v Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server: cnpv Monitoring Agent for Windows OS: ntv Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server: ms

After you log on, you can type ? to display a list of the supported commands. ras1is the command to modify trace settings. If you type it in the field at the bottom ofthe window, the help for this command is displayed.

Setting trace parameters for the Tivoli Enterprise Consoleserver

In addition to the trace information captured by IBM Tivoli Monitoring, you canalso collect additional trace information for the Tivoli Enterprise Consolecomponents that gather event server metrics.

About this task

To collect this information, modify the .tec_diag_config file on the TivoliEnterprise Console event server. Use the steps in the following procedure tomodify the event server trace parameters.

Procedure1. Open the $BINDIR/TME/TEC/.tec_diag_config file in an ASCII editor.2. Locate the entries that configure trace logging for the agent components on the

event server. Two entries are included, one for tec_reception and one fortec_rule:# to debug Agent Utilstec_reception Agent_Utils error /tmp/tec_receptionSP# to debug Agent Utilstec_rule Agent_Utils error /tmp/tec_rule

Problems and workaroundsThe known problems and workarounds are organized into types of problems thatmight occur with the Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent, for exampleinstallation and configuration problems and workspace problems.

Note: You can resolve some problems by ensuring that your system matches thesystem requirements listed in Chapter 2, “Requirements for the monitoring agent,”on page 5.This appendix provides agent-specific troubleshooting information. See the IBMTivoli Monitoring Troubleshooting Guide for general troubleshooting information.

Installation and configuration troubleshootingProblems can occur during installation, configuration, and uninstallation of theagent.

The problems and solutions in Table 4 can occur during installation, configuration,and uninstallation of the agent.

(UNIX only) During a command-line installation, youchoose to install a component that is already installed,and you see the following warning:

WARNING - you are about to installthe SAME version of "component_name"

where component_name is the name of the componentthat you are attempting to install.Note: This problem affects UNIX command-lineinstallations. If you monitor only Windowsenvironments, you see this problem if you choose toinstall a product component (for example, a monitoringserver) on UNIX.

You must exit and restart the installation process. Youcannot return to the list where you selected componentsto install. When you run the installer again, do notattempt to install any component that is already installed.

A problem can arise when you install and configure anew monitoring agent to a computer where other agentsare running as described in this example:

v Agents are running on computer and communicatingwith a Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server, calledTEMS1.

v You install a new agent on the same computer andyou want this agent to communicate with a differentmonitoring server, called TEMS2.

v When you configure the new agent to communicatewith TEMS2, all the existing agents are re-configuredto communicate with TEMS2.

You must reconfigure the previously existing agents torestore their communication connection with TEMS1. Forexample, you can right-click the row for a specific agentin the Manage Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Services, andselect Reconfigure. See the IBM Tivoli MonitoringInstallation and Setup Guide for more information onreconfiguration.

Diagnosing problems with product browse settings(Windows systems only).

When you have problems with browse settings, performthe following steps:

1. Click on Start > Programs > IBM Tivoli Monitoring >Manage Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Services. TheManage Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Services windowis displayed.

2. Right-click the Windows agent and select BrowseSettings. A text window is displayed.

3. Click Save As and save the information in the text file.If requested, you can forward this file to IBM SoftwareSupport for analysis.

A message similar to Unable to find running CMS onCT_CMSLIST in the log file is displayed.

If a message similar to Unable to find running CMS onCT_CMSLISTis displayed in the Log file, the agent is notable to connect to the monitoring server. Confirm thefollowing points:

v Do multiple network interface cards (NICs) exist on thesystem?

v If multiple NICs exist on the system, find out whichone is configured for the monitoring server. Ensure thatyou specify the correct host name and port settings forcommunication in the IBM Tivoli Monitoringenvironment.

The system is experiencing high CPU usage. Agent process: View the memory usage of the KSYCMAprocess. If CPU usage seems to be excessive, recycle themonitoring agent.

Network Cards: The network card configurations candecrease the performance of a system. Each of the streamof packets that a network card receives (assuming it is abroadcast or destined for the under-performing system)must generate a CPU interrupt and transfer the datathrough the I/O bus. If the network card in question is abus-mastering card, work can be off-loaded and a datatransfer between memory and the network card cancontinue without using CPU processing power.Bus-mastering cards are generally 32-bit and are based onPCI or EISA bus architectures.

After installing the Summarization and Pruning Agentv6.2.1 on Windows systems, and after installing anyanother monitoring agent, the Summarization andPruning agent is not working anymore.

The C trace file associated with the Summarization andPruning Agent shows the following issue:

"KSZ_CLASSPATH environment variable is not defined."

There is not a java trace file associated with theSummarization and Pruning Agent.

Save the KSYENV file before installing any other monitoringagent, or follow these steps:

1. Edit the KSYENV file ( located in %CANDLEHOME%/TMAITM6)and add this line anywhere in the file: KSZ_CLASSPATH=

2. Reconfigure the Summarization and Pruning Agentwhich will fill up the KSZ_CLASSPATH variable

3. Restart the Summarization and Pruning Agent

There should be a java trace file as well as a C trace filecreated as soon as the Summarization and Pruning Agentstarts. The tables should be summarized and pruned.

Be sure that you follow the general uninstallation process described in the IBMTivoli Monitoring Installation and Setup Guide:

1. Remove Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server Application support bycompleting the following steps:

a. Use Manage Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Services.

b. Select Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server.

c. Right-click and select advanced .

d. Select Remove TEMS application support.

e. Select the agent to remove its application support.

2. Uninstall monitoring agents first, as in the following examples:

v Uninstall a single monitoring agent for a specific database.

-OR-

v Uninstall all instances of a monitoring product, such as IBM TivoliMonitoring for Databases.

3. Uninstall IBM Tivoli Monitoring.

The way to remove inactivemanaged systems (systems whosestatus is OFFLINE) from theNavigator tree in the portal is notobvious.

Use the following steps to remove, but not uninstall, an offline managed systemfrom the Navigation tree:

v Click the Enterprise icon in the Navigator tree.

v Right-click Workspace > Managed System Status.

v Right-click the offline managed system, and select Clear offline entry.

If you also want to uninstall the monitoring agent, use the procedure describedin the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Installation and Setup Guide.

Unique names for monitoring componentsIBM Tivoli Monitoring might not be able to generate a unique name for monitoringcomponents due to the truncation of names that the product automaticallygenerates.

If the agent supports multi-instances, IBM Tivoli Monitoring automatically createsa name for each monitoring component by concatenating the subsystem name, hostname, and product code separated by colons (subsystem_name:hostname:KSY).

Note: When you monitor a multinode system, such as a database, IBM TivoliMonitoring adds a subsystem name to the concatenated name, typically a databaseinstance name.The length of the name that IBM Tivoli Monitoring generates is limited to 32characters. Truncation can result in multiple components having the same32-character name. If this problem happens, shorten the hostname portion of thename as follows:1. Open the configuration file for the monitoring agent, which is located in the

following path:v On Windows: &install_dir;\tmaitm6\Kproduct_codeCMA.INI. For example,

the product code for the Monitoring Agent for Windows OS is NT and thefile name is KNTCMA.INI.

v On UNIX and Linux: itm_home/config/product_code.ini andproduct_code.config. For example, the file names for the Monitoring Agentfor UNIX OS is ux.ini and ux.config.

2. Find the line the begins with CTIRA_HOSTNAME=.3. Type a new name for host name that is a unique, shorter name for the host

computer. The final concatenated name including the subsystem name, newhost name, and KSY, cannot be longer than 32 characters.

Note: You must ensure that the resulting name is unique with respect to anyexisting monitoring component that was previously registered with the TivoliEnterprise Monitoring Server.

4. Save the file.5. Restart the agent.

Agent troubleshootingA problem can occur with the agent after it has been installed.

Table 6 contains problems and solutions that can occur with the agent after it hasbeen installed.

Check the RAS trace option settings, which are described in the IBM TivoliMonitoring Troubleshooting Guide. The trace options settings that you can set onthe KBB_RAS1= and KDC_DEBUG= lines potentially generate large amounts of data.

The Warehouse Summarizationand Pruning Agent workspacesand navigator items are notvisible in the Tivoli EnterprisePortal.

The application support files need to be installed for the Tivoli Enterprise PortalServer, browser Tivoli Enterprise Portal, and desktop Tivoli Enterprise Portal.This problem can occur in IBM Tivoli Monitoring upgrade environments wherethe Warehouse Summarization and Pruning Agent is upgraded from a versionthat did not have the self monitoring capabilities, and the support files were notselected in the upgrade.

The agent stops or does notrecord any data.

The agent trace log file should be examined. The log file is located in theHOME\logs directory and is created during the running of the agent. The name ofthe file is HOSTNAME_SY_JAVA_timestamp-01.log. HOSTNAME is the host where theagent runs, and the timestamp is the time the agent started. The timestamp issequential in nature, so it should be the latest log created for the agent.

If you receive the following error, remove the SelectMethod=cursor from theURL used during configuration of the agent:

java.sql.BatchUpdateException:com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException:

This only applies if the agent runs with MSSQL, not DB2®.

When using the F1 key orselecting Help > Contents andIndex, you receive a message inyour Microsoft Internet Explorerbrowser which states, It seemsjavascript is disabled in yourbrowser, please enable it andreload again, or click here toview without javascript. If youselect here, the Tivoli EnterprisePortal V6.1 Help is displayed,but the agent help is not.

Ensure that the local site is added to the browser's trusted site and then enablethe javascript.

The Summarization and PruningAgent hangs or has a workerthread that hangs.

This can be caused (on DB2 at least) if there is another application (DB2 ControlCenter) holding a lock on the table. DB2 by default has LOCKTIMEOUT set to -1,meaning a long wait that causes the Summarization and Pruning Agent toappear to hang. Closing the offending application (or resolving the deadlock)solves the problem.

The Summarization and PruningAgent is logging "Interfaceunknown" messages.

This happens when you have the Warehouse Proxy Agent and some othercomponent on the same system and you shutdown the Warehouse Proxy Agentand start the other component, which may reuse the same port previously usedby the Warehouse Proxy Agent. These messages are benign but end up filling thelogs until the Warehouse Proxy Agent is restarted, and the synchronization of theWarehouse Proxy Agent location is sent to all Tivoli Enterprise MonitoringServers.

Summarization and PruningAgent returns a java exception.

The java exception is

ava.sql.BatchUpdateException: com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException:sp_cursoropen/sp_cursorprepare:The statement parameter can only be a batch or a stored procedure with asingle select,without FOR BROWSE, COMPUTE BY, or variable assignments.

To avoid this problem, remove the SelectMethod=cursor from the URL used inthe Summarization and Pruning configuration. There is also a hotfix availablefrom Microsoft Support website.

There are two select methods - DIRECT and CURSOR. Depending on thedatabase and how it was designed - CURSOR might be required. If you neverneed multiple-statement-execution transactions, or you never have more than oneopen statement at a time, you can use direct. Otherwise, you need cursor mode.

v Drop all HX2 and DX2 indexes from aggregate tables.

v Drop all of the indexes on the WAREHOUSELOG table:

v Increased the NUM_IOCLEANERS value from 14 to 24.

If you want to receive multipletrace logs for separateinvocations of the same TakeAction command, leaving thissetting on permanently fills theavailable disk space.

Do not leave this setting permanently. By doing so, you create a new log file foreach invocation of the Take Action command and ALL of them are left on theagent system.

When a chart or graph view that includes the attribute is scaledto a small size, a blank space is displayed instead of a truncatedname. To see the name of the attribute, expand the view of thechart until there is sufficient space to display all characters of theattribute's name.

At the bottom of each view, you see thefollowing Historical workspace KFWITM220Eerror: Request failed during execution.

Ensure that you configure all groups that supply data to theview. In the Historical Configuration view, ensure that datacollection is started for all groups that supply data to the view.

You start collection of historical data but the datacannot be seen.

Managing options for historical data collection:

v Basic historical data collection populates the Warehouse withraw data. This type of data collection is turned off by default.See the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Administrator's Guide forinformation on managing this feature including how to set theinterval at which data is collected. By setting a more frequentinterval for data collection you reduce the load on the systemincurred every time data is uploaded.

v You use the Summarization and Pruning monitoring agent tocollect specific amounts and types of historical data. Be awarethat historical data is not displayed until the Summarizationand Pruning monitoring agent begins collecting the data. Bydefault, this agent begins collection at 2 AM daily. At thatpoint, data is visible in the workspace view. See the IBM TivoliMonitoring Administrator's Guide to learn how to modify thedefault collection settings.

Historical data collection is unavailable becauseof incorrect queries in the Tivoli EnterprisePortal.

The column, Sort By, Group By, and First/Last functions are notcompatible with the historical data collection feature. Use ofthese advanced functions makes a query ineligible for historicaldata collection.

Even if data collection has been started, you cannot use the timespan feature if the query for the chart or table includes columnfunctions or advanced query options (Sort By, Group By, First /Last).

To ensure support of historical data collection, do not use theSort By, Group By, or First/Last functions in your queries.

When you use a long process name in thesituation, the process name is truncated.

Truncation of process or service names for situations in theAvailability table in the portal display is the expected behavior.100 bytes is the maximum name length.

Regular (non-historical) monitoring data fails tobe displayed.

Check the formation of the queries you use to gather capturedata. For example, look for invalid SQL statements.

Each event class corresponds to an attribute group in the IBM Tivoli EnterpriseConsole.

A description of the event slots for each event class is provided. For moreinformation about mapping attribute groups to event classes, see the IBM TivoliMonitoring Administrator's Guide.

Generic event mapping provides useful event class and attribute information forsituations that do not have specific event mapping defined. BAROC files are foundon the Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server in the installation directory in TECLIB(that is, install_dir/cms/TECLIB for Windows systems and install_dir/tables/TEMS_hostname/TECLIB for UNIX systems). IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console eventsynchronization provides a collection of ready-to-use rule sets that you can deploywith minimal configuration.
