Lee Marquis, Editor

Welcome...We often hear inspirational stories of how famous actors, musicians and models were discovered. Invariably, there is a large degree of good fortune at play and the resultant star can be as much a product of circumstance as anything else. But this is not to belittle the work and dedication that may (or may not) have been put in prior to any such break. Indeed, if you are of the mindset that we all make our own luck, then it's easy to appreciate that those lucky breaks have been earned.

When a wannabe actor lands a role in a big movie, it's clear they've had a break through. For the rest of us, however, it can be less obvious as to which of our achievements will turn out to be the breakthroughs or turning points in our lives. Spotting breaks in hindsight is easy, identifying them as they happen – to ourselves or others – is less so. Perhaps winning a teenage story writing competition will be remembered as a key moment for a future best-selling author (see pages 32-33). Perhaps displaying some creative work as part of the local art trail will signify a break through in recognition for an artist waiting to be discovered (see pages 18, 22 and 26). Perhaps speaking out against proposed changes to local health facilities will initiate the groundswell of support needed by a local residents' association to claim victory (see page 38).

The one thing that links all the examples mentioned thus far – from talent scouts picking out future stars to schoolchildren winning awards – is the effort made by those involved. Awards are rarely won without an application of talent, an art trail is unlikely to get off the ground without the input of a community and local issues are not going to change without voices being raised.

Some people dream of success, others wake up and work hard at it.

Calling local residents...

A note to businesses...

A Wanstead estate agent is offering cash prizes for residents who decorate their front gardens for next month's Art Trail Wanstead. The HomeFront art competition, which is free to enter, is being supported by Bairstow Eves Lettings, who are offering £100 for the winner and two runner-up prizes of £25 each. Trail organiser Angela Daley suggests: "You could build a temporary installation, a pebble garden, a water feature or

design a decorative theme for your front windows, using any materials you wish. Or you could follow

Art Group Wanstead's 2014 theme, Make Art Not War." Participants must register by 30 August and ensure

their creations are on display during the trail (6 to 21 September). For full details, visit wavidi.com/homeart

Lights out on 4 AugustWanstead's Allen Burgess Centre and Woodbine Club are among the local organisations that will be taking part in the UK-wide Lights Out event this month. Lights Out is an invitation to everyone to turn off their lights from 10pm to 11pm on 4 August to mark 100 years since Britain declared war on Germany, at 11pm on 4 August 1914. Local businesses and community groups are being encouraged to take part and participants are asked to leave on a single light or candle for a moment of reflection.

Local area committee meetings of Redbridge Council were officially abolished last month in a bid to save money. In doing so, the council has made a controversial change to the way in which residents are consulted over local issues. Under new proposals being developed, the area committee meetings will be replaced by one monthly forum that will allow residents from anywhere in the borough to attend. The new forums will also include an informal 'market place' of stalls staffed by council officers.

Snaresbrook Primary School unveil First World War mural

Snaresbrook Primary School have created a mural to commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War. The artwork was created by community artist and parent Victoria Baskerville and fellow parent Lisa Tighe. The mural – which was

unveiled last month by World War II veteran Norman Roach and former soldier Steve Newsome – includes 16 poppies, each designed by a different class at the school. The mural has inspired conversations among children and adults alike about war and remembrance.

A local Brownies unit are searching for a new leader to ensure their long-running group can continue. The 7th Wanstead Brownies – who meet at Christ Church hall on Wednesday evenings from 6pm to 7.15pm – will celebrate their 70th year in 2015, but are at

risk of closure if no one comes forward for the position of Brown Owl. Male and female CRB-checked applicants are welcome and no experience is necessary (training will be provided), just a willingness to 'get involved, play, laugh, sing along and learn'. Call 07808 773 823

Wanstead students' WWI film adds to national memory

As part of the National Memory Local Stories project – which aims to engage young people with the history of the Great War – a group of Year 9 students from Wanstead High School have created a film about a local First World War story. The pupils spent time

at both Redbridge Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, learning filming techniques and researching local history. The film will be displayed at Redbridge Museum and will also form part of a National Portrait Gallery website. Visit wavidi.com/ww1film

Green screen filming techniques and digital collages of historical documents were used to create a short film

Local tennis club stage annual tournament finals

Linkside Lawn Tennis Club's senior players took to the court last month for their annual tournament finals. The historic club, now in its 101st year, crowned Pavel Chichkanov from Stratford as the new men's singles champion. In the women's event, 16-year-old Caitlyn

Hardy from Wanstead successfully defended her title for the fourth consecutive year and also lifted the mixed doubles trophy with partner Bradley Goult. The club, which is located on Overton Drive, welcomes new competitive and social players all year round. Visit wavidi.com/lltc

Two members of the Wanstead Cricket Club ladies' team have been praised for their role in an inner-city cricket initiative. Coaches Hannah Newman and Saba Nasim received the Outstanding Youth Project award from former England cricketer Ebony Rainford-Brent at the

national StreetChance Annual Achievement Awards last month. StreetChance – a partnership between the Cricket Foundation and Barclays – provides a diversionary activity to engage young people in communities affected by crime and anti-social behaviour.

Community support vital for the Wanstead Park festival

Over 2,000 people turned out to enjoy last month's Music in Wanstead Park festival. "Some people lounged around picnicking, others preferred to get up and dance. One crowd gathered to watch the mysterious tall lady whose skirts opened to reveal acrobats

within," said organiser Gill James. Ticket sales are vital for the annual event, which costs the Aldersbrook Families Association around £19,000 to stage and this year received a council grant of £1,500. Support in kind is also received from park land owners the City of London.

Two months of free rounders on Wanstead Flats

As part of the Mayor of London's Free Sport programme, the City of London Corporation have initiated a weekly rounders league that will run throughout August and September at the Dell on Wanstead Flats, near Aldersbrook Road. The sessions, which are open to all

age groups, will take place on Wednesdays from 6pm to 8pm and will include fun-based games and coaching. It is hoped this trial will lead to a regular summer league in the future and encourage people in the local community to form their own teams. Call 020 8532 5307

30 more local school placesFollowing an increase in the demand for local primary school places, Redbridge Council have announced that Nightingale Primary School will take an additional 30 children this September. To accommodate them, an additional reception class will be constructed over the summer. A council spokesperson said: "The need for school places is rising every year and the council has taken serious action to meet this demand for places in both primary and secondary schools across the borough."

The Wanstead Fringe is set to return next month for a week of community activities and volunteers are sought to help organise, promote and run the events. Taking place between 6 and 13 September, organisers are hoping to build on the success of last year's inaugural fringe, which saw a week of comedy, photography, guided walks, children's events and picnics take place throughout Wanstead. Musicians of all styles are also needed for performances at a range of local venues. Visit wavidi.com/wf14

Pick up a book from Wanstead's Little Free Library

On 15 August, Wanstead will see its first Little Free Library installed in the front garden of local resident Fiona Tonkin, who lives on Overton Drive. A small artist-designed book-sharing venue, the Little Free Library will be decorated with an Epping Forest theme

by artist Gabriela Castellanos. As part of a national campaign to promote literacy and art, passers-by will be encouraged to 'take a book, return a book and donate a book'. A Little Free Library will also be installed at the Wanstead Tap in Forest Gate later this month. Visit wavidi.com/lfl

Wanstead House tutor Anna Bisset has won a £500 London Borough of Redbridge commission to create

public art for September's local art trail. To tie in with Art Trail Wanstead's theme this year, Make Art Not War, Anna proposed making a large lightweight 3D sculpture out of willow in the form of a peace dove.

The dove, which will have a wingspan of about 1.5m, will also be decorated with handmade embellishments, including ceramic feathers, to be made by local children and adults at workshops being organised as part of September's art trail.

Against tough competition, her idea won over Art Group Wanstead members, who run the trail, and Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure, which secured the grant. Rather than standing in one location, the dove will appear at a number of venues during and after the trail, which runs from 6 to 21 September.

Students who have attended Anna's Redbridge Institute of Adult Education classes at Wanstead House Community Association, and at Buckhurst Hill Community Association, will be more familiar with her painting work, in acrylic, oils and watercolours. But as well as taking commissions for her painting, she has always enjoyed grappling with large-scale sculptures.

Landscape architects and engineers were needed to help install Anna's 8' 6" tall welded steel sculpture Figurehead when it was acquired by London Docklands Development Corporation. It continues to dominate the Poplar Dock Marina quayside. Anna's slightly taller Cast Iron Men

sculpture is installed at a school in Welwyn Garden City, while her unmissable stainless steel Propellers tower about 19ft over a Sustrans cycle route in Hatfield, Hertfordshire.

Anna now lives in Walthamstow with photographer husband Paul Tucker and two sons. She attended Hertfordshire College of Art and Design in St Albans before studying fine art at Bath Academy of Art. Later, she studied for an MA in Art in Architecture at the University of East London, which led her into more large-scale pieces.

"I saw the public art for the Art Trail Wanstead project as an opportunity to do what I really enjoy. I want to do more commissioned 3D work," she says. Anna adds that she would like to see more carefully thought-through art being used to bring a human scale to huge building developments.

The practicalities of bringing up a family has led her to concentrate more on easily-handled painting, but metalwork is in her blood – the

family business is a foundry, now based in Braintree, Essex. Under her brother's guidance, it has now, appropriately, linked up with a foundry that focuses on producing art. She has used her architectural art training and the facilities at the foundry for her work. But she also loves collaborative projects, whether they involve discovering how to work with willow, how structural engineers weigh and fix a heavyweight sculpture or working with students on community-linked projects. Her classes have worked with local churches and other community centres and she's helped organise shows by Wanstead House students during each art trail. Her students' artwork will be on show again at Wanstead House during this year's event.

Only recently, Anna discovered that, during the First World War, one of her grandfathers had been in the little-known Highland Cycle Regiment – as an 18-year-old he delivered messages in France, armed with a gun. He survived the Great War. She added: "The art project made me realise how so many people had a connection with the First World War. It's so little talked about. They have family links and painful memories of loss, and often don't want to focus on it."

Anna says that she hopes her choice of a peace dove offers an alternative view, one of hope rather than the dark side of conflict.

For more information about Anna and her work, visit www.annabisset.co.uk or contact Wanstead House on 020 8989 3693.

Funding by the London Borough of Redbridge was secured through a Section 106 public art contribution.

My daughter bought a house in Wanstead in 2012 and since then I have developed a connection with and love for the local area and Wanstead Park.

I used to work as an accountant and moved to Switzerland with my husband and children 33 years ago. Being a full-time mother left me with little spare time, but I have always found the time to paint.

Art is my passion and, for as long as I can remember, I have always painted. I love the way that art can connect and bring people together regardless of age, gender, language or culture. When I was young, I used to paint with ink and then I started to introduce colour into my art using watercolours.

My husband bought me a canvas and some oil paint when I was 21 years old. This was my first introduction to canvas and oil and, after experimenting for a while, I fell in love with it after doing a two-year-long Beaux Arts course in France.

I am inspired by impressionist painters, including Dali, Zuluaga, Van Gough and Renoir. I do not have their talent, but I like to paint and spend all my free hours in my little art studio that I built in the spare room of our house.

I like to walk and travel and I take many photos of landscapes that I like and places that I love to spend time in. My art is inspired by these photos, but I like to paint my own vision of the landscape, bringing out the colours and the light to try to express the feelings and sensations that the landscape inspires in me.

My art has always been personal. I have never shown my paintings to anyone outside of my family. My daughter signed me up to the art trail as a surprise because, in her own words, my art

"is worth showing to others". It is a great honour for me at my 'old' age to be part of Art Trail Wanstead.

I feel nervous and excited about this opportunity and I hope that others will enjoy looking at my paintings and, in some way, connect with the art that I have created.

I am from London and I went to Chelsea School of Art and received a degree in Printed Textiles. I worked for several years

as a textile designer and colourist, painting designs for both fashion and furnishing prints.

I moved to Wanstead in 1986 with my hubby while raising a family – I learned to love the area and I continued to paint. I have been fortunate enough to have work exhibited at The Alexander Llewellyn Gallery and Salon Des Refuses and various other West End galleries.

But one annual event that is always such fun is Art Trail Wanstead. It's lovely, friendly and shows off the local area. Artwork is displayed all over Wanstead, in the shops, eateries, gallery, pubs and salons. The art trail idea was thought up and brought to life by the really wonderful Donna Mizzi, such an awe-inspiring, dedicated and hard-working person. I have been with the trail since its beginning five years ago and I have been very fortunate to be allowed to show annually at the Wanstead Beauty Clinic, run by the lovely Sam and her girls – they are terrific – and at Kurtis estate agents. I have also shown with other artists at the George pub, which is a very nice place to socialise as well.

As an artist, I am inspired by so many things related to my life, especially current affairs, religion, unusual happenings, music and fun stuff. I would describe my work as surrealistic, quirky and colourful, and I hope every picture tells a story to one's own imagination. I work mostly in acrylics now. Colour is my passion, and I love to paint and experiment with different implements other than brushes. I also add collage to some works and I love all the gels you can mix with acrylic paints to create different effects.

I have recently returned to portraiture as a challenge – not having done it on a large scale since art school – and have had a few commissions related to this topic. Recently, I have

done some paintings of Wanstead, two of which I am exhibiting in this year's trail.

My only real claim to fame was when I was submitting work to The Royal Academy for their summer exhibition. A BBC film crew were there and I was interviewed by Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen and, lo and behold, our conversation was televised on The Culture Show. Such a shame I was caught in the rain before the interview!

I'm Ron Filer, 75 years old and a resident of Aldersbrook for nearly half a century with my wife Margaret. I took up art as a result of

a TV program called Water Colour Challenge. Doing 'real' work at the time, I recorded this show for bedtime viewing. Rarely agreeing with the judge's verdict on the daily winner, Margaret said: "Well do it yourself!" So I've been painting for around 15 years now.

Locally, I'm a member of Wanstead House community centre, the Allan Burgess Centre and St Gabriel's Church in Aldersbrook, and each of these venues will be displaying many and varied pictures during the Art Trail Wanstead fortnight.

I enjoy attending Anna Bisset's acrylic class at Wanstead House on Tuesday mornings, as well as being the chairman of the House Management Committee. Masterpieces from our many classes will be hung in the bar reception area for viewing during the trail and on the open activity day taking place on Saturday 13 September.

At the Allen Burgess Centre – perhaps better known by us oldies as the Corner House (sited opposite The Co-op) – I was asked by the area manager James to run a class for a few weeks – that was around four years ago! Now, the 'Two Ronnies' (that's me and Ron Bowman) lead weekly Thursday morning art sessions for seniors on behalf of Age UK. Their excellent works will also be on display during the trail and on the Sunday craft day coinciding with the Wanstead Festival on 14 September. The popularity of this class unfortunately means we are full, with 26 keen painters on the books.

Meanwhile, at St Gabriel's Church in Aldersbrook (just a few stops on the 101 bus route) we, the 'Two Ronnies', run another session on Tuesday afternoons in the parish hall on Park Road from 2pm to 4pm for folk interested in spending two hours doing their own thing in watercolours, or any other medium, with some gentle encouragement and hopefully helpful criticism from us. As in previous years, 100 or so large and

small pieces of art from many local artists will fill our beautiful church for the trail.

As you may gather, art and involvement in local clubs and societies give me and the other Ron great pleasure. We never get bored with life and it is great when our members say 'thank you'. One of our things is to bring a fresh painting in each week, saying: "I've done my homework – where's yours?"

When we left, no one had any idea what would happen that night. I was working as a maid for Lady Cavendish

at the time, and had for about a year when the ship sank. Our relationship was purely professional; I was her servant, not her friend, and we were both aware of that. I dressed her, ran her baths and did her hair and make-up, though our conversations were short and one sided. I was beneath her, it did not benefit her to make small talk. Both her and her husband viewed me as a possession. I wasn't a person, I was a servant.

When they told me we were sailing to Chicago on the Titanic, I knew it wasn't for my enjoyment. I was there to make their trip more pleasurable, not to have fun myself. When we boarded, I was laden with bags, trudging along behind the happy couple as they waved goodbye to friends and family, though no one seemed to even glance at the Lady's maid behind them, and why would they? I wasn't important, I had no money, I didn't matter to them in the slightest.

Once we had boarded, we were shown to our cabins. After much insistence from Lord Cavendish, we were shown Lady Cavendish's cabin first as "women must come first", though I always add "unless you're a Lady's maid" in my head. Her cabin was beautiful, with mahogany panelling on the walls and a huge double bed, fitted with red and gold silk sheets. I could never have imagined such majesty could be found on a ship, and yet here I stood, in the middle of it all, though not for long. Once Lady Cavendish was settled in and had unpacked the excessive amount of outfits she had made me pack, I was shown to mine. I was sharing with another Lady's maid, a Miss Bird,

who had been employed at the last minute to escort a family to France. The cabin was tiny, with barely enough room for us both to stand in. The walls were covered with a cream wallpaper, decorated with a gold pattern, and a little sink was placed between our beds. It was not unpleasant, though I couldn't help but think of the silk sheets and huge wardrobe as I unpacked my uniforms into the drawers.

I was still amazed by the size of the ship, though the majority of my time was spent in Lady Cavendish's cabin choosing outfits for various events I wasn't allowed to enjoy due to my status as a servant. Although I said little to her ladyship other than "Yes, ma'am" or "No, ma'am", she often told me about all the amazing things she'd done the day before whilst I was fastening her buttons or brushing her hair, telling me how much she was enjoying herself, about how she loved the feeling of freedom and not having anything to worry about. I replied with "Yes, ma'am" or "Oh, really, ma'am?", though I often had to take a deep breath, counting to 10 inside my head to stop myself shouting at her. She didn't understand that, though this was her holiday, I still had to clean and dress her, spending every waking moment worrying about anything I'd forgotten

The results of a short story competition for children were announced last month as part of the annual Redbridge Children's Book Award Here we present Maiden Voyage, the winning entry in the teenage category by 15-year-old Wanstead High School pupil Jessica Phillips

to do. Even my free time was spent with her in my thoughts, and I was never truly off duty.

On the 14th, the day dawned bright and clear, the sea smooth and calm. Tonight was the ball, and though I knew I would have to dress Lady Cavendish, I was looking forward to it. I'd brought a dress especially for the occasion, and her ladyship had given me the night off once I had got her ready, though at midnight I had to return to her cabin to get her ready for bed. Tonight was the night I could stop being Lady Cavendish's maid and be Ellen Mary Barber.

At half past six, I went to her ladyship's room to prepare her for the ball. Her dress was so elegant, floor length and covered with the pattern of a peacock's tail. In the centre of her bodice a peacock's head was embroidered. In her hair she wore a peacock feather and a blue ribbon. Whilst dressing her, I couldn't help but think of my dress hanging from a hook on the door. It was so plain and dull. My mother had made it for me just before we had left, and although at the time I had thought it the most beautiful dress, I now realised how obvious it would be to everyone that I was not of the same status as them.

I returned to my cabin and changed, putting a green ribbon in my hair, trying to make myself look more like I was part of their world. At nine I gave up trying and decided that I was wasting time that I could spend dancing. It was only three hours till I had to return and I intended to spend my evening doing something I enjoyed.

As I walked through the doors to the ballroom I couldn't help but gasp at the grandeur of the hall. The walls were varnished, the details painted gold. Everyone was laughing and smiling, all dressed as though they were waiting to meet the King himself. Miss Bird had also been given the evening off and together we sat at a table, surrounded by aristocracy. Not long after we'd sat down I was asked to dance by a tall, dark-haired gentleman, an offer I gratefully accepted, and together we waltzed for an eternity.

At 11 o'clock I returned to my cabin to get changed back into my uniform, leaving Miss Bird in the ballroom dancing. I never saw her again after that night, though I hear she survived after taking one of the final spaces on one of the last lifeboats to leave. Her employers stayed behind and died a lovers' death.

Just after half 11, as I was hanging up my dress, I felt a slight shudder go through the boat, almost

like a train pulling into a station. About five minutes later I heard footsteps running down the corridor and her ladyship's voice screaming my name: "Ellen! Ellen! Ellen, where are you?!" I opened my door, panic rising in my throat. I wasn't late, I couldn't be! I'd been so careful.

"Ellen! There you are! Come on, quickly, there's not enough room on the lifeboats for everyone, we have to hurry!" She grabbed my hand and pulled me down the corridor behind her. Her blue ribbon was falling out and there was no sign of the peacock feathers that had been there before. We reached the deck where chaos seemed to be in charge. People were running around screaming, searching for loved ones or pushing people out of the way to reach the lifeboats.

"Julia! Ellen! This way! There's space here!" Lord Cavendish was there, calling us over. I had never realised he knew I even existed, let alone knew my first name. His shirt was half untucked, his suit jacket open, every indication he was a Lord gone. It seemed that status didn't matter anymore.

We fought our way through the sea of people to the lifeboat, only to find two spaces left. We had taken too long getting there, one of the spaces had been taken. Lady Cavendish looked terrified, her bottom lip shaking as though she was about to cry. She looked so much like a child in need of her mother, I instinctively placed my arm tentatively around her shoulders to calm myself as much as her.

"You two take the spaces. I'll be fine Julia, don't worry about me, I'll see you again when all this is sorted out." Above us rockets exploded, a call for help as Lord Cavendish turned to me: "Ellen, you take care of her for me, she's never liked the water." A faint smile played around his mouth, though it didn't reach his eyes. I nodded, not quite understanding what was happening. This man, this Lord, was giving up his life for me, a lowly Lady's maid. As I was ushered towards the lifeboat, Lady Cavendish still wrapped in my arm, I turned back: "Thank you, Sir, I’ll see you when this is all over." He nodded at me, smiling a smile that reached his eyes this time. A tear trickled down my cheek as I turned back to step into the boat, never to see him again.

Now that people's minds are turning to holidays, the common ploy of sneaking out a public consultation has taken

place again. This time, our local NHS is seeking to close Heronwood and Galleon interim care wards at Wanstead Hospital. This would leave only phlebotomy and physiotherapy services at the site. Quite where this public consultation is being publicised is a mystery; this looks like another box-ticking exercise.

Currently, the two wards provide 48 beds, while King George Hospital has 30 beds and Gray's Court Dagenham has 26 beds. That's a total of 104 beds for the whole of Redbridge, Havering and Barking and Dagenham. The North East London Foundation Trust and the Redbridge Clinical Commissioning Group plan to close all beds at Wanstead Hospital and Gray's Court, and leave just 40 permanent beds for 700,000 people across the three boroughs, with a further 21 to be added if needed. Last winter – which was a good one health-wise – 75 interim care beds were needed. What will happen this winter?

The reason the NHS gives for closing the beds is the success of two new community-based intermediate care teams, the Community Treatment Team and the Intensive Rehabilitation Team, which treat people at home. We are told these teams have been well received, but only started work in November 2013. Our view is that interim care requires an adequate supply of both hospital beds and community teams.

The local NHS says that we have over provision in intermediate care. The 2013 National Audit of Intermediate Care report – which covers the community-based teams as well as interim care in hospitals – states that the mean number of beds used by 74 health commissioning groups was 26.3 per 100,000, which means that to match this, 184 beds would be needed. The current 104 beds is well below this, before any are closed.

The commissioning groups' report claims that this is not about money: "The reason we want

to make changes is because we think we can make things better for patients." But the same document also states: "We do not have enough money to spend on everything that everyone wants and if we spend more on one service then we have less to spend on another."

Health Minister Norman Lamb believes that local hospitals need to be reinvented to be part of a revolution in elderly care. In May, the Daily Telegraph reported him as saying: "Britain must learn from countries… which have pioneered ways of bolstering community care round small hospitals to meet the needs of their populations."

Wanstead Hospital provides a good level of intermediate care in pleasant surroundings and we do not want to see it go the same way as other local NHS services. We want the NHS to come and explain the proposed closure at a local meeting in Wanstead, so watch out for details.

Caring about caringHelen Zammett of the Wanstead & Snaresbrook Residents' Alliance is keen to draw attention to the proposed closure of the Heronwood and Galleon interim care wards at Wanstead Hospital

The ongoing story relating to the painting above the altar at St Mary's Church entered a new phase last month, when

conservators from the Courtauld Institute of Art – including the research student managing the project – visited the church to stabilise the picture prior to its move to their premises in Somerset House, The Strand.

The picture, which is surprisingly light in weight, was unhooked from its simple mountings on the east wall (in reality, pieces of old wire coat hangers) above the altar and the blue fabric extension 'wings' were removed. The picture was then laid flat on the chancel floor to give easy access to the surface. The first step was to give the whole picture a light vacuuming to remove surface dust. High-powered lights were then used to pinpoint vulnerable areas where the paint was badly crackled or lifting from the canvas. Having found these weak spots, the conservators used tissue paper impregnated with glue to cover them and the glue was then reactivated with water. Other unsafe areas were heat treated. This preliminary work took some two and a half hours to complete.

Due to its size and to avoid subjecting it to excess movement, it had been recommended that the picture should be laid flat during transport. The parish hired a large transit van, without internal wheel arches, and volunteers assisted the conservators in lifting the painting from the church into the van. The journey to Somerset House passed without incident, but on arrival the volunteer driver was faced with the first obstacle: the archway entrance into Somerset House is quite narrow and the van had to be manoeuvred in traffic several times to gain entrance. Further obstacles were met when the picture had to be manually lifted up a narrow staircase and along corridors until it reached its resting place for the next few months.

While at Somerset House, the painting will be subjected to detailed analysis, including x-rays, inspection under ultra violet light, paint

testing techniques and close examination of the materials used. The research student will liaise with the Chicago Institute of Art, which houses another version of the painting, and will also carry out research in Italy into the records of the artist, Guercino. Records within the parish are vary scant – although it is known that the picture was moved from Christ Church to St Mary's in 1890 – and it may prove necessary to search early parish records stored in the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford. It is also understood that the Courtauld Institute have identified several independent conservators who will be invited to examine the picture while it is in their hands.

A full report will be presented to the Parish of Wanstead on completion of the work and thereafter, depending on the outcome, a decision will to be taken on how to deal with the painting.

Since mid-June, Aldersbrook Riding School has delivered 67 hours of equestrian experience to students and patients of a

number of Redbridge's special needs schools and institutions, thanks to funding from the Redbridge Olympic Legacy Fund grant. The therapeutic effect of horses has long been recognised and so the schools have been keen to take up the offer.

Children from the hearing impairment unit at Roding Primary School, Hatton School, the learning and communication department at Beal School and Brookside School have all had the opportunity to visit us and groom and ride a pony. Other special schools, such as New Rush Hall and Little Heath, along with more pupils from Hatton and Brookside Schools, are also booked to take part in autumn sessions.

The Redbridge Olympic Legacy Fund grant was awarded in order to give free riding or horse experience sessions to Redbridge residents who are members of the following hard-to-reach groups: those with a disability; members of faith communities; and people over 50 years of age. The sessions with the special schools have enabled us to go a long way towards fulfilling our commitment towards the group of participants with disabilities, although there are still a number of schools yet to take up the opportunity. In addition to the schools, advertisements in local papers and on our website have given qualifying individuals the opportunity to participate, although only a small number have done so and sessions are still being organised.

It would also be nice to have the opportunity to reach more adults with disabilities, but this has proved difficult – we invite any clubs, associations or institutions for adults or children with disabilities, who might be interested in taking part, to contact us so that more sessions can be arranged.

With the school summer holidays now in full swing, we intend to concentrate on fulfilling our

commitment to the other two groups that are being targeted by the project, the over 50s and members of faith groups.

Despite an article and advert on the Redbridge Faith Forum, as well as local media advertising, very little response has been received from Redbridge residents who are members of faith communities or are aged over 50. Any readers that fall into one of these groups (or those with a disability) are invited to contact us to get involved.

Sessions are given in groups of three or four adults or children and can include a riding lesson or a short course of lessons, with or without the chance to have a more hands-on experience grooming the horse or pony.

Wanstead Village Directory52

In 1810, after eight years as tenant, Louis Joseph de Bourbon, Prince de Condé, was given notice to quit by its young owner,

Catherine Tylney-Long, who had just turned 21 and wished to use Wanstead herself. This was a significant event: her father had rarely visited and his uncle, Earl Tylney, had lived in Italy after 1763, so the estate had been without a resident owner for nearly 50 years.

Catherine was generally accounted attractive, intelligent and vivacious. She was also extremely wealthy. Sir James, her father, had died when she was only six years old, leaving Catherine's new-born brother as heir to the extensive estates of the Long and Tylney families. The boy, also named James, died in his turn in 1805, whereupon Catherine, as the eldest of his three sisters, became sole heiress.

Until she turned 21, Catherine and her sisters lived quietly with their mother, Lady Catherine, at Draycot Cerne, the ancestral seat of the Long family in Wiltshire. Her coming of age was celebrated there, but her launch into society required a residence in or close to London. The family's "princely mansion" at Wanstead was well situated for this purpose, as well as providing a magnificent backdrop for entertaining.

We have hints of improvements being made at Wanstead Park around the time Catherine and her family took up residence, including works to the lakes and (probably) the creation of a new "American garden", which was in the area now occupied by Raynes Avenue. By June 1811 it was being reported that Miss Tylney-Long was to give "one of the grandest fêtes champêtres of the season".

In the 20th of a series of monthly articles looking at the owners of Wanstead Park through history, Richard Arnopp tells how the young heiress to the Tylney-Long fortune decided to use it as a base in her search for a husband

The main objective of Catherine's "coming out" was, of course, to announce her availability for marriage. Very soon, the young lady was besieged by a host of suitors of various nationalities, ranks and pretensions. The Prince Regent's brother, the aging Duke of Clarence (with his horde of illegitimate children by the actress Dorothea Jordan), was one. Others included the absurd "Romeo" Coates and the exotic Baron de Géramb. However, Lord Kilworth, eldest son of the Irish peer Lord Mountcashell, was supposed to be the principal favourite.

A latecomer on the scene was the Hon William Pole-Wellesley, a nephew of the Duke of Wellington whose journey through life had, thus far, not been a smooth one. It is said that one day, as he lay in bed contemplating an ever-growing mountain of debts and difficulties, a sudden thought struck him. His mother was friendly with the mother of Catherine Tylney-Long, whose wealth would resolve all his problems at a stroke. He immediately wrote and asked his mother to do all in her power of effecting an introduction.

According to an account written in the 1820s: "It is said that Lord Kilworth, Pole-Wellesley and some other gentlemen were by chance dining together, when the subject of Lord Kilworth's probable marriage with Miss Tylney-Long was introduced. Kilworth was urged to be kind to his less fortunate friends so soon as he became master of her princely possessions. Lord Kilworth was not over-liberal in his promises, and Pole-Wellesley told him plainly that he would supplant him. A considerable wager was the result, and Pole-Wellesley took the field accordingly. His first measure was to tender his suit: his next was to openly declare, that any man who dared presume to oppose his pretensions, must contest them in the field."

It seems there were words between Wellesley and Lord Kilworth at an assembly at Lady Hawarden's on 6 August 1811, and three days later a meeting took place on Wimbledon Common.

At the meeting between Kilworth and Pole-Wellesley the seconds intervened, and everything was "amicably adjusted". On 14 August, however, a letter appeared in The Morning Post asserting that Wellesley had apologised, and this led to a second meeting

on the next day at Hounslow Heath when, after an interchange of shots, the seconds again intervened and the matter was finally arranged. Lord Byron referred to this incident in The Waltz:

"Hail, spirit-stirring Waltz! – beneath whose banners A modern hero fought for modish manners; On Hounslow's heath to rival Wellesley's fame, Cock't – fired – and missed his man - but gained his aim."

The duel between Lord Kilworth and Pole-Wellesley, and the tireless perseverance with which the latter besieged Miss Tylney-Long, and absolutely shut her out from all other suitors, became famous. His success was the consequence. He had already proposed six times and been refused. Following the duel, she wavered. He proposed a seventh time and was accepted.

The marriage took place on 14 March 1812 at St James's Church, Piccadilly, and was conducted by the Rector of Wanstead, Dr Glasse. It was celebrated with great splendour: a contemporary account describes the bride as attired in a gown of real Brussels point lace. The design was a spray, draped over a skirt of white satin, with a cottage bonnet of the same lace, two ostrich feathers, a deep lace veil and a satin pelisse trimmed with swansdown. "The gown cost seven hundred guineas, the bonnet one hundred and fifty guineas, and the veil two hundred guineas… The lady's jewels consisted principally of a necklace and earrings of brilliants, the former cost twenty-five thousand guineas; eight hundred wedding favours were distributed, worth a guinea and a half each, besides others of an inferior quality and price." Ominously, perhaps, when the minister asked the groom for the wedding ring, he had forgotten to bring one. A local jeweller had to be summoned to make good the deficiency.

Next month, we shall see how Wanstead Park enjoyed a spectacular, though short-lived, renaissance under its new owner.

Since that sunny Easter in 2012, when I moved into the area, I have discovered an oasis in a desert of urban expanse with an

abundance of nature. Boasting 200 different varieties of birds and a wide range of insects and fauna, Wanstead Flats and Wanstead Park give pleasure to both experienced naturalists and others like myself, who can just about tell the difference between a robin and a sparrow.

Since those early days, I have grown more knowledgeable about the birds that visit the Wanstead Parklands through my own research, which includes photographing them and learning through the expertise of birders on social media. Twitter is a very useful tool in finding out what migrating birds are visiting 'my patch'.

The first bird I noticed on my regular visits to the Flats was the Skylark. It was the beautiful sound they make that drew my attention to them as they flew high above me, before they would hurtle down back to their nests hidden in the broom. My favourite, however, is still the Kestrel, which is most noticeable as it hovers in the sky looking for prey. This bird, more than any other, has made me want to learn more.

Migrating birds, which pass through on their way to summer and winter destinations, are the source of much excitement to the birders on the Flats. Normally, a sighting of the first Whitethroat or Winchat of the season sends the Twitter feeds into overdrive. One such bird that passes through is the Swift, and there are many in the area as I write this. It is amazing just to stand in the middle of the Flats as these birds fly past with such agility and speed, just inches from you.

This year, I have managed to see a wide variety of birds, including Garden Warblers, Dunnocks, Reed Buntings and, amazingly, a Red Kite. Never in my wildest imagination did I expect to see such a magnificent creature high above me on the Flats.

Alexandra Lake now has a new generation of Canada geese, Graylags, Coots and Mallards and you can also witness Pochards, Little Grebes, Shovellors and the occasional Grey Heron, which is normally found perched on a log looking for an opportunity to feed.

Two of my favourite waterfowl are the Egyptian geese, who's markings look like they are wearing some type of superhero mask, and the Tufted duck, which look like they have an 80s hairstyle, except they always look cool and fashionable.

Over in Wanstead Park, the Grey Heron is a regular, but more recently there have been Little Egret's in the Heronry Pond and I have also been happy to see the Great Crested Grebes with their young.

Birder's ParadiseBarry Chapman has been a regular visitor to Wanstead Flats and Wanstead Park since he moved to the area in March 2012 Since then, he has discovered an abundance of nature in a birder's paradise

Barry would be happy to discuss his knowledge of local wildlife with others – to find out more, email [email protected] or follow him on Twitter @wansteadwomble

The Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) forms part of the North West cluster,

which consists of nine teams in total. All of these teams support each other and can be called upon to assist should they be needed.

The NPT structure has one sergeant, one 'face-of-the-ward' police constable (PC) and one supporting Police Community Support Officer (PCSO). These officers are, in turn, supported by regular PCs and PCSOs. This model is cluster-focused rather than ward-based, but with the dedicated officers remaining on the ward.

Following the closure of Wanstead Police Station last year, a contact point was set up at Wanstead House. This service is open to assist the community every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. Officers are available to you during this time if you wish to discuss any concerns or issues you may have about your local area. All information supplied is treated in strict confidence.

If you wish to report a crime, Ilford Police Station is open 24 hours and Barkingside Police Station is open Monday to Friday from 7am to 11pm. Alternatively, you can call 101, the police non-emergency number, and we will come to you to report the crime. The reporting of crime, no matter how minor it may seem, is important to us. It provides officers with a true indication of what is happening in the ward. If you have any information or concerns about what is happening on your road, such as bogus callers or abandoned vehicles, please give us a call. The faster we are told about it, the more chance we have of catching the offenders in the act.

High-value cars, such as BMWs, are often stolen and parked up in quiet backstreets to see if they have a tracker on them. The criminals then retrieve them a few days later. Fiat 500s, Smart cars, Fords and white vans are the most commonly targeted vehicles at the moment,

although any car is at risk if the keys can be seen through your letter box. 'Fishing' of vehicle keys through letter boxes is still an issue for us, so be sure to keep your keys out of sight – wheel locks and security posts help as well. It is also very important not to leave items on display, as this will draw attention to your vehicle. Anti-tamper screws can be fitted to your number plates to prevent them being taken off and used in crimes.

This month's top tip concerns security during the warm weather. Opportunist burglars walk the streets looking for homes that are easily accessible through open windows or doors. By making sure that your windows and doors are not left open in unoccupied rooms, you will drastically reduce your chances of becoming a victim of burglary. UPVC doors especially must be locked with the key – pushing up the handle will close the door, but won't securely lock it. We understand that the effects of being targeted by burglars run far deeper than a loss of property. Please help us to keep you and your property safe by making use of any locks or other security that you may have.

Summer securityPCSO Alan Winston offers some advice for keeping your home safe during the summer months and explains the importance of reporting local crime, no matter how trivial it may seem

Angelsin Wanstead

You'll have seen him with Dill, his son, at The Art

Shop and may even know him by name, but Harry (who I knew as Dill's Dad for months, if not years) has so many angelic traits which, combined, with his strong faith and touching humility, could fill the whole of the Wanstead Village Directory. I've struggled to give you a taste of his complexity in just 600 words.

Harry's faith maintains his constancy and is one of the biggest motivations in his life. He explains that, just as not cutting hair is a way for a Sikh to grow closer to God, so is performing selfless acts. Called Sewa, it's an important part of his life and embodies the idea of community service – exactly what I'm sharing through the Angels in Wanstead series.

He is an educated and pragmatic man and was a draftsman in Punjab in the early 1960s. After realising that his qualifications were not accepted in the UK, he did what he could in Nottingham, then moved to London. In seven years he had developed from a shop with 10 pairs of shoes to wholesale operations and 57,000 pairs.

With that background, it's not surprising that his pursuit of Sewa is not superficial. His first decision, to teach Punjabi to children, which he made at the Sikh temple, developed into more, as you'll read. Punjabi is spoken over a wide area in India and the UK, and consequently there is a huge variety of accents. This is what prompted Harry to write a book teaching Punjabi to English speakers, which he circulated for free. It's now in its sixth edition. He won't consider taking royalties or selling it and will only let others publish the book if they sell it at cost price.

On a visit to Punjab in 2005 he decided to dedicate his time there to preaching. He explains: "I believe that if there is Sewa in the lives of people, then we have humanity. Otherwise we may as well be animals." He then created a society: the Punjabi Gurmat and Destar Kendar

Guru Har Gorbind Sahib Sewa Society, Ambala India, in which

children are taught to live in a 'godly' way

(Gurmat). Much of this is about Sewa,

consideration, humility and politeness, but over the years the society added

Punjabi courses, a book bank for

school children, a communal kitchen, medical services and small grants for educational support.

In order to help disseminate this, and

because of the initial difficulty in gaining state

support, Harry resolved to spend every penny of his pension on

helping young people. He spends most of each year in Punjab with his niece while

dedicating his time to that cause. Although the Sewa society is independent of religion, so many asked him about his beard, turban and other religious practices that he wrote another book.

Over the years the society has lifted hundreds of young people out of the cycle of poverty and sometimes, by accident, Harry meets them. One example of this is someone he bumped into who now lives in Canada. A professional himself, the ex-student has started his own branch of the society to help other kids.

Run by others (Harry is adamant he shouldn't be part of the management), the society now has many branches and Harry spends most of his time working in India. He regularly returns to Wanstead (he has lived here for 20 years) to see family and gives talks on the benefits of undertaking community work in warm countries on retirement – his actions of Sewa are clear.

Unless you happen to work within the criminal justice system you are likely to have very little contact with the police

or the courts. This may be why cuts to legal aid don't resonate as clearly with the public as, say, cuts to the NHS.

I was reminded of this when I happened to bump into an old client the other day. Robert (not his real name) and his wife, who both had well-paid jobs, had their world turned upside down when no explanation could be offered for the death of their child, other than it was a case of baby shaking. Robert had been feeding the child in the middle of the night when the boy became limp and unresponsive. An ambulance took the child immediately to the local hospital for treatment. He was then transferred to a specialist children's hospital where he died several days later.

Both parents were interviewed at length and then spent weeks awaiting the decision of the police investigation, which eventually resulted in Robert being charged with the murder of his son.

The prosecution, with all the resources available to them, produced evidence that Robert's child had died as a result of being shaken by him. It was our task to seek rebuttal opinion from independent experts. This was a very specialist area of expertise and finding the appropriate experts was a difficult task, made more difficult by strict limits on the fees payable to experts under legal aid rules.

The presiding judge at the Central Criminal Court took the unusual step of saying that he feared a miscarriage of justice if funding was not made available to support our client's defence. Eventually the funding was found, our client was tried and, after evidence was heard both from himself and the experts instructed upon his behalf, he was acquitted.

Since this case, cuts of more than 25% have been made to the criminal legal aid budget and it is increasingly difficult to find experts properly qualified to assist in cases such as this.

Fees paid to lawyers have not increased since 1996. For dealing with a case like Robert's, where the allegation is murder, solicitors are paid for what can be many hours of stressful work at the police station a fee of less than £250.

Those of us that work in this field make ourselves available to clients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The satisfaction in our work comes from successes in cases such as Robert's, where the full weight of the state can still be challenged despite the substantial cuts being made by the government. How long this will remain the case is, of course, another question. At least this story has a happy ending in that when I bumped into him recently, I learned that Robert and his wife are still together and that they have a new baby. A CHANGE OF ACCOUNTANT CAN BE

MORE BENEFICIAL THAN YOU CAN

POSSIBLY IMAGINE

It’s vital to have an accountant on your team,

but better to have the right accountant…

At Alan Patient & Co, we pride ourselves on

being friendly and helpful, but also extremely

professional, our first consultation is free, giving us

an opportunity to explain exactly what we can do

for you.

We offer a full range of services, but you can in

effect “pick and mix” the services which suit you

best.

Whether you find accounting daunting, expensive

in terms of your time, or just plain boring, we can

find a solution tailored to your business needs.

Our clients vary from: artists to antique dealers,

bookmakers to builders, hypnotherapists to haulage

contractors, plumbers to publishers and trainers to

types of dancers. They all have their own unique

requirements and we aim to make their lives a little

easier. As well as business clients, we do, of course,

look after a number of individuals, with services ranging from completing tax returns

to more complex matters such as Capital Gains tax and Inheritance tax planning.

As a firm we are well established and have been based in George Lane for the

last 21 years, we are directly opposite M & S with parking at the rear – always
