Lee Marquis, Editor
Welcome...An influx of foreign visitors are anticipated to arrive here this month These will not be Olympic spectators setting up camp early – although some will take up residence in Wanstead for a short while – instead, we will be looking skyward to spot the migrant birds arriving from their winter homes From across Europe and Africa, they will return to the UK in their millions and, with Wanstead Park and Wanstead Flats on our doorstep, we shall be ideally placed to enjoy the sights and sounds of this myriad of avian invaders
To help you separate the wheatears from the chiffchaffs, the Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group will be holding an expert-led migrant bird walk this month, covering both Wanstead Flats and Wanstead Park Our photo-illustrated guide on pages 12-13 will give you an overview of what to look out for, where and when
Photographing wildlife is no easy feat, and it is easy to overlook a photographer's skills when viewing their work, perhaps more so than when viewing other forms of art For over a century, however, the Woodford and Wanstead Camera Club has been promoting and encouraging the wide-ranging skills of local photographers, and you can view a selection of their current members' work on pages 38-39
I am constantly grateful for the literary and visual contributions made to this publication by local community groups and individuals Wanstead is rich in history and culture and there is a wealth of knowledge and skills within the community, both in terms of our local businesses and the general public at large From the 15 years of work by The Wanstead Society (see page 30), the more than 100 years of history at the hidden oasis that is Wanstead Golf Club (see page 42), to the story of Wanstead's very own Olympic torchbearer (see page 16), there is, it would seem, always something to discover about Wanstead's history and future

Historian William Tyler will be presenting 'Voices from the Titanic' at Wanstead Library this month, 100 years after the passenger liner sank in the North Atlantic Ocean
On 15 April 1912, RMS Titanic failed to complete her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York after colliding with an iceberg and, to mark the 100th anniversary, the Wanstead Historical Society will be hosting an event that will tell the story of the 1,500 people that perished
"William Tyler, a collator of the horrifying events of that night, will tell the stories of those who died through the fresh
and vivid memories of the few who survived," comments Mark Galloway, secretary for the society
The presentation will take place on 19 April at 8pm Visitors are welcome (£3) Call 07949 026 212

Slowing downRedbridge Council have agreed to fund new road markings and install two vehicle activated speed signs on Wellington Road, Wanstead, following concerns raised by local residents about the use of the road as a 'rat run' by motorists avoiding the main traffic route along Hermon Hill
A spokesperson for the residents welcomed the council's recognition of their concerns, but emphasised that the problem involves more than just speeding and that the proposals do not address the issues of traffic volume and noise pollution
To celebrate World Health Day – which takes place on 7 April every year to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organisation in 1948 – Wanstead Leisure Centre will be holding an open day, with a range of free activities on offer The topic of this year's World Health Day is ageing and health, with the theme "good health adds life to years"

Probably the best community pub in London
The Nightingale pub in Wanstead has received a five-star review from View London, a leading online entertainment and city guide The review was conducted anonymously by Des de Moor, one of Britain’s leading experts on bottled beer Mark O'Donnell, editor of View London,
commented: "Five stars for a pub is the highest rating we give, and it is not a very common occurrence The venue has to be considered among the very best of its type The Nightingale was awarded five stars as we consider it one of the best community pubs in the capital"
Wanstead Festival on day of Olympic Closing Ceremony
At a council meeting last month, it was agreed that this year's Wanstead Festival will be brought forward to coincide with the closing ceremony of this summer's Olympic Games on 12 August In previous years, the festival has taken place in September, but by staging the event
earlier councillors hope to capitalise on Olympic spirit to further engage local residents
The community event – which aims to provide vibrant entertainment while promoting local businesses and services – last year attracted an estimated 5,000 people
This year's Redbridge Book and Media Festival gets underway this month, featuring a programme of events taking place across the borough The festival will be launched in Wanstead by entertainer Julian Clary, who will be discussing his novel at a sold-out event in the library
Former ITN newsreader Sandy Gall will also be appearing at the same venue to discuss the war against the Taliban, while Brighton based puppet company Long Nose will be performing a 'magical' show for children The festival will run from 3 April to 4 May Call 020 8554 5000

The original nine-hole course of Wanstead Golf Club was opened on 25 November 1893. It was designed by Tom Dunn – a
prolific designer of golf courses in the UK and abroad – and laid out by greenkeeper James MacPherson, who became the club's first professional. The opening ceremony was held in the newly refurbished clubhouse, which was originally the stables of the former Wanstead House.
Over the years, the layout of the course has been adjusted and extended After five years it was redesigned to make 14 holes, with the first four being played twice to make 18 Then, in 1913, additional land was incorporated to the course to give a further three holes, and extended to four holes in 1919 The Lake Hole (16th) – pictured here – still remains the club's signature hole, requiring a shot over the lake onto a semi-island green, with the water awaiting any errors of judgement At the first hole, players are required to drive over a large grassed dip, which was formerly part of the wine cellars of Wanstead House
The course was originally leased on land owned by Lord Cowley but, just before the First World War, the trustees of the Cowley Estates were contemplating selling off the land for housing development Herbert Vincent, a city lawyer and founder club member, foresaw that the club's existence was in danger By 1920 Vincent, together with others, formed Wanstead Sports Ground Limited for the purpose of purchasing the land from the trustees Canvassing both members and local residents, who bought shares, they raised approximately £40,000, which retained the land and ensured golf, cricket, tennis and later bowls
were able to continue on the site
The layout of the clubhouse has also changed
dramatically over time The present entrance and foyer was originally open and members would drive their horse
and carriage through to tether them in the area where the putting green is now
located In 2005 a major refurbishment was carried out to provide improved facilities for dining and dancing, including a bar area and terrace
The club now has some 850 members, comprising of full, midweek, lady, junior, senior and social members Sir Winston Churchill was an honorary member and to date the club has provided three Ryder Cup Professionals from its ranks (Percy Alliss, Alan Dailey and Lionel Platts) In 1946, club member Jean Hetherington won the Ladies Open Championship Additionally, Darren Lee won the Amateur Medal in the 1996 British Open and Simon Khan, a leading player on the European Tour, is also a former club member
(Wanstead's_secret)Wanstead Golf Club has been described as 'golf's best kept secret for over 100 years' With its refurbished clubhouse and beautiful parkland setting, club manager John Nolan is more than happy to let the secret slip

A hundred million or more invaders are about to cross the Mediterranean and sweep north across Europe. Some will
travel in the dead of night. Others will brazenly launch their assault during broad daylight.
In their race to reach breeding territories from Land’s End to John O’Groats and far beyond, millions of birds and scores of species will be returning to our shores throughout April and into early May Some will have travelled the relatively short distance from the Mediterranean Basin, whilst others will have reached us from the Sahel, the zone south of the Sahara Desert in north Africa And still more will have journeyed from the rainforests of the Congo Basin and the savannas of southern Africa
Birds such as wheatear, whinchat, redstart and ring ouzel will drop in on Wanstead Flats for a few hours, or – if we’re lucky – a few days Then they will move on again to the Pennines, Scotland or even Scandinavia For many of the newly arriving chiffchaffs, common whitethroats, blackcaps and house martins, Wanstead is their summer home, the place where they were hatched A few species will not even bother to stop, but will continue on their way to who knows where Swallows and red kites fall into this category
Every spring there is a surprise package Last year it was a wood sandpiper on Angel Pond (the smallest pond on Wanstead Flats) The year before, a dunlin spent a day on the muddy margins of Jubilee Pond
When should I look? The first returns are in the last week of March That is when the advanced guard of sand martins, blackcaps, chiffchaffs and wheatears appear In the first week of April, the first swallows will fly over and we will hear the songs of common whitethroats
and willow warblers for the first time House martins will follow, looking for mud at Alexandra Lake with which to craft their nests Yellow wagtails will call as they pass overhead, rarely coming to land From the middle of April, the garden warblers, lesser whitethroats and whinchats arrive on Wanstead Flats and in Wanstead Park Then we will hear the first screaming swifts around May Day
Where should I look? We are very fortunate to have Wanstead Flats on our doorstep Pretty much all the species mentioned – and more besides – will be seen there during a six-week period up to 6 May Take a stroll around any of the scrubbier parts and you’re bound to see something of interest If I had to pick a single spot, it would be somewhere between Alexandra Lake and the Golden Fleece pub on Capel Road And don’t forget to look up from time to time; that’s where any migrating birds of prey will be
Wanstead Park is also a good place to search Sand martins, house martins and swallows will linger over the park’s lakes to feed on the myriad of insects there A willow warbler can usually be heard somewhere in the park, issuing its beautiful descending cadence If you’re very lucky, you might hear a cuckoo, a bird much rarer in these parts than it used to be
The invasion has begun...Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group member Tim Harris, who will be leading a migrant bird walk on Wanstead Flats this month, explains where you should be looking to spot our seasonal visitors
The Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group migrant bird watch is free to attend and will take place on Sunday 15 April There will be two meeting points: 6am at the Jubilee Pond car park on Wanstead Flats and 10am at the refreshment kiosk in Wanstead Park Participants may join at either, or both stages For more information, call 020 8989 5453 or visit www.wrengroup.org.uk

Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla)About the size of a sparrow, the blackcap is Wanstead’s commonest warbler – the males deliver a beautifully rich song
Confusingly, females have brown caps, not black These are relatively short-range migrants; many of our birds spend the winter around the Mediterranean ID pointer: the beautiful song Where: Wanstead Park When: from early April and all through the summer
Skylark (Alauda arvensis)Our birds have migrated only short distances to reach us In spring, their presence is more obvious as the males launch aerial song-flights, sometimes climbing so high they be-come invisible – though their beautiful song is still audible We have the closest breeding population to central London ID pointer: the males' spiraling song flights Where: rough grass on Wanstead Flats When: April through to June
Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe)One of the first heralds of spring, wheatears stop off with us on their way north After spending the winter on grasslands south of the Sahara Desert, they pass through en route to the Pennines and Scotland, where they breed Wheatears feed on the ground, dashing after an insect then standing still until the next one comes along ID Pointer: distinctive white rump Where: rough grass on Wanstead Flats When: late March to early May
Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata)As long as a sparrow, but slimmer, this insectivore winters in the Congo Basin The first birds arrive in our area in the first week of May It bred in Wanstead as recently as the 1990s, but numbers have since fallen dramatically Any birds spotted locally will be on their way further north ID pointer: returns to the same perch after catching a fly Where: Long Wood on Wanstead Flats When: early and mid May
The invasion has begun...

On Sunday 22 July – just five days before the Olympic Flame arrives in Stratford for the lighting of
the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games – I will take to the streets of Redbridge as a torchbearer for the borough.
I teach English at Central Foundation Girls’ School in Bow, where I am also Head of Media Studies I was nominated by one of my past students and a close friend for my work improving the lives of young people and those around me
I came to the UK from Jamaica in 2001 and I have served in education since my arrival In 2007 I won the Jack Petchey award for excellence in leadership Being called to bear the torch is an absolute honour and an opportunity to celebrate my dual cultural identity
Some people have asked whether I’ll be supporting Jamaica or Britain during the Olympics Can I not support both? The torch run will be a symbolic statement that I embrace both my British and Jamaican nationalities – the joy is in the participation, the coming together of people of the world and the camaraderie Winning is important, but even more important is the spirit of the event, and that will be seen along the streets during the torch relay
The route from Wanstead tube station to Whipps Cross Hospital is one of my favourite jogging routes, but I also train extensively at the gym For the past two years I have been getting out of bed every morning at 530am to get to a gym in Leyton just before they open an hour later
I am overjoyed that I will be running within my home borough – Wanstead is a quaint and beautiful gem, where village meets city all in one place I urge residents to maintain the quiet, serene atmosphere of the area and not to take our town’s unique characteristics for granted
Running the relayDubbed 'Lukain Bolt' by his gym buddies, Luke Williams, a teacher from Wanstead, is one of almost 8,000 inspiring people announced last month as torchbearers for the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay
Luke WilliamsAge: 45Place of Birth: Montego Bay, JamaicaOccupation: Teacher and freelance journalistInterests: Running, roller skating and actingAchievements: nominated three times for the Actor Boy Awards, the Jamaican equivalent to the OscarsQuote: "If I had a different set of knees, legs and lungs, I would beat Usain Bolt at his game!"
Luke is one of 8,000 torchbearers who will carry the Olympic Flame an estimated 8,000 miles across the UK over a period of 70 days The Olympic Torch Relay will start at Land's End, Cornwall and The Flame will then visit 1,018 communities across the UK – as well as Dublin, Ireland – before it starts its London leg on Saturday 21 July It will arrive in the Olympic Stadium on Friday 27 July as part of the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
Luke hopes that local residents will turn out to motivate and support him on Sunday 22 July as he carries the Olympic Torch towards Stratford

The notion of food being central to our lives goes back to biblical times, and probably beyond. We still talk of breaking
bread together as an expression of conviviality, business deals are struck over lunch. First dates are often a shared restaurant meal.
Yet today we seem to have an almost dysfunctional relationship with eating A lunch ‘hour’ is now not even thirty minutes A generation of children is growing up without knowing how to use a knife and fork properly Obesity and malnutrition can bizarrely coexist
Yet who doesn’t look forward to a heartwarming meal after a hard day’s work? Or an ice-cream on a sunny day, or a celebratory meal to honour a special occasion?
I became a nutritionist because I love food and consider eating a constant joy and comfort I don’t believe in faddy diets or excluding whole sections of foods from a diet Some clients seek me out because they have a specific health issue they would like help with Others simply want to optimise their health and well-being
In any case, one thing I constantly reassure clients about is not to feel guilty; the odd chocolate biscuit or glass of wine won’t kill you But, on the other hand, there is a whole wealth of delicious and interesting ingredients and recipes out there that mean we can enjoy meals that are both satisfying and healthy Pottering around in the kitchen is great fun, and trying out new ingredients and taste sensations is a fantastic way to work towards a healthier diet
Nutritionists are there to help us get an insight into the wealth of foods available and how they affect us And at the same time if we get the maximum enjoyment from our diet, then all the pieces are in place for a lifetime’s healthy and joyful relationship with food
To live well, eat wellNone of us are likely to starve in the western world, but a poor diet still takes its toll in various forms, says local nutritionist Karen Poole

in Wanstead, in 1997, a pint was £1.97, the average house price for a terrace was £123,000, the M11 link road was still being
built, a zones one to four travelcard would set you back £5.50, a litre of petrol was 61.7p – and I was still doing my A-levels at Wanstead High School.
For 15 years the Wanstead Society has been campaigning to preserve, protect and promote the character of Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook and this year we crowned our years of achievement by formally becoming a Small Charity
The Trustees are a dedicated bunch of 17 volunteers, many of whom have been involved from the start
Over the last 15 years... The Society was established by the community out of the need to protect our area from over development, to protect its heritage and to promote it as a good place to live and work These remain the core activities of the Society today
Our more notable successes have included campaigns to save the Corner House as a day care centre for the elderly and to have the water fountains at either end of the High Street renovated We continue to maintain the Corner House Garden and have also contributed towards the planting of trees and the addition of extra litter bins within Christchurch Green We supported Wanstead’s first art trail and festival and keep a weekly eye on any major planning applications in the area
And the next 15 years... The Society has many campaigns on the go, but none are more topical than the campaign to keep Wanstead Police Station open, with a staffed counter service The society asked Boris Johnson, through our GLA Member, if he would commit to keep the station open All he would is that: “No decisions have been taken in relation to the future of Wanstead police station The MPS is reviewing
the whole of the property estate” But at least he gave an answer – none of
other candidates responded Well, there is an election in May, so when the political
parties ask for your vote, ask them if they will commit to it Remind them that the last time it re-opened crime fell by 23% With crime rising in Redbridge, we need our station, and the police that go with it
The other major battle we are involved with is the campaign to save Wanstead and King George hospitals from closure Neither of these, in their present capacity, will continue to run as they are and we are desperately fighting to save them along with many other organisations and MPs
The Wanstead Society, however, can only operate through the support of its members If you would like to know more about what we do, get involved or join, then we invite you to become a member of our Small Charity with big ambitions
Charity begins in WansteadFollowing The Wanstead Society's recent conversion to Small Charity status, chairman Scott Wilding outlines the group's 15 year history and encourages local residents to be a part of their future

One of my favourite photography quotes is: “Buying a Nikon doesn't make you a photographer. It makes you a
Nikon owner”. For anyone with an interest in photography, the act of buying a camera is just the first step – getting to understand how it works and how to see the world through the lens is even more important.
I’ve had an interest in photography for many years; not an all-consuming passion like some people I know, but there is a creative part of me that is frustrated by my inability to draw and photography allows me to overcome that frustration Three years ago my son, Harry, expressed an enthusiasm in photography as well, and it seemed to me to be a good idea to visit a local photography club so that we could develop our mutual interest If nothing else, it would be a good opportunity to spend some quality time with my son
An internet search led us to Woodford and Wanstead Camera Club, which at that time was small and struggling Indeed, within a few weeks of joining it was announced that funds were so low that the club would close in a few months Thankfully, a knight in shining armour – my friend Michael Finlay of ARK Build Plc – came to the rescue, with a very generous donation that helped the club survive and then re-invent itself into the thriving organisation it is today
So, three years later I find myself as chairman of the club, looking at the variety of members we have and the possibilities for the future Founded in 1893, Woodford and Wanstead is one of the oldest camera clubs in the country, and is a member of the East Anglian Federation and the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain However, photography is changing – digital cameras and the ability to manipulate pictures on a computer mean that the creative possibilities are far greater; photos are no longer just about recording a moment
This also means that the need to have an expensive Nikon is no longer as great – some of our most successful images as a club have been taken on ordinary compact cameras rather than an expensive DSLR Photography can be very expensive – and there is a danger that photographers get caught up in boasting about the latest bit of over-priced kit they’ve bought
Our club is keen to be more inclusive, so the equipment is less important than the outcome Our focus is on the endless possibilities for the image that is produced – learning how to frame a shot, thinking about the message or story and the impact that the picture conveys is even more important than the tool that was used to create it
Whilst there is a growing social element to the club, with the more experienced members giving guidance and assistance to those eager to learn more, we have a calendar of events that make our evening meetings even more interesting
Guest speakers give us the benefit of their knowledge in areas from portraiture to astro-photography to digital image manipulation There are regular club competitions with qualified judges giving invaluable feedback on our work, club nights using some of our own equipment, including studio lighting, and we also have the occasional club outing too
The generous donation from ARK Build has allowed us to keep the membership fee down to just £45 for a full year and our membership is gradually growing – and getting younger
I’ll leave you with another favourite quote, from the celebrated American photographer Sam Abell: "Photography produces pleasure by simplicity I see something special and show it to the camera A picture is produced The moment is held until someone sees it Then it is theirs"
Photo storiesPeter Hughes, chairman of Woodford and Wanstead Camera Club –one of the oldest camera clubs in the country – describes himself as a creative snapper rather than a technical photographer, and particularly likes pictures that invoke a story

(Wanstead's_secret)Wanstead Golf Club has been described as 'golf's best kept secret for over 100 years' With its refurbished clubhouse and beautiful parkland setting, club manager John Nolan is more than happy to let the secret slip

i am often asked to explain what life coaching is and how it works. What does the coach actually do? I could give a long and complex
answer, detailing the training I have done and the skills I have developed and making it all sound like a very grand profession; I could, but I don’t.
As a coach, I believe in simplicity Coaching is essentially a simple process, but it is an extremely powerful one A good coach will be able to listen to what you say without judgement or prejudice, will work with you to decide what it is that you really want to accomplish and will support you in setting achievable goals The role of the coach is to support and challenge you to find the answers to whatever it is you are grappling with, and to ensure they are the answers that are right for you
When I see a client for the first time they often tell me how their friends and relatives have told them over and over again how to resolve their problem, and how unhelpful they find that response This recently happened with someone I will call James (not his real name)
James was in a relationship with a woman who was not treating him very well Many of James’s friends, family and colleagues kept telling him to dump her, that she was bad news James came to me because he was so confused by everyone telling him what to do that he couldn’t think straight I asked James to tell me the whole story, which I listened to without interruption At the end of his tale, James looked so much happier He said he was experiencing immense relief; just the act of being able to say all that, out loud, without anyone chipping in with advice or comments had really helped to clarify things for him
Clearly that wasn’t the end of the coaching process and there were several more sessions to follow, but the major shift in just that one session was that James was now taking responsibility for resolving his dilemma in his own way Up to now, James had been shielding himself from (well-meaning)
assaults on all sides, telling him what to do So much energy was going into defending himself that James just didn’t have the resources left to look at the problem clearly for himself
James’s story is, I think, a good illustration of why people come to coaching The coach will not provide the answer to your dilemma; advice from friends and family is all very well, but they are not you We could all be in the same situation and all deal with it differently because we are different people and we come at it with a different perspective If you want advice, there are plenty of people out there who will give it to you – some of it uninvited If you want a safe space where you can think things through for yourself without judgement or advice, where you will be supported and challenged in deciding what it is that you really want to achieve, where you can start achieving your goals in a very practical way, then coaching is for you It’s your choice
Do you want advice, or something useful?Sue Rowan explains how she approaches her work as a life coach in a society that is full of people ready to offer unwanted advice

Lyle’s Golden Syrup is officially recognised in the Guinness Book of Records as Britain’s oldest brand, while the Tate name lives on,
not just on sugar bags but in the art galleries and libraries the family funded. yet not many people know that the Tate & Lyle empire was largely built by an army of young, working-class girls – some just 14 years of age – who toiled in its factories in the East End of London. Until now, their lives have not been recorded, and their contribution not widely recognised.
The Sugar Girls draws on interviews with more than 50 women – now in their seventies, eighties and nineties – who worked at the two refineries in Silvertown, an area that was once bustling with factory workers and dockers
In Tate & Lyle’s East End heyday, the company was regarded as the best to work for in the area, since it offered among the highest wages and was considered to “really look after” its employees – with an on-site surgery, dentist, chiropodist and hairdresser, not to mention a bar serving alcohol throughout the working day
But factory life could also be hard, and hazardous Those girls employed as sugar-packers would find their fingers bleeding by the end of the day if they hadn’t protected them with makeshift thimbles In the can-making department, where the Lyle’s Golden Syrup tins were made, the clatter of metal was so noisy that the girls had to learn to lip-read to talk to one another
In the 1940s, girls worked six days a week, with just half an hour off for lunch, and those on shift work started at 6am or worked until 10pm The strict clocking-in rules meant that if they were a minute late they would lose quarter of an hour’s pay
Yet for those who donned the Tate & Lyle uniform, the benefits outweighed the hardships Many women speak nostalgically about the dances that were once laid on every week at the company social club, the Tate Institute – built for them by Henry Tate but now sadly derelict – and the regular drunken jaunts to the seaside on work beanos
For those who became sugar girls, the factories were also a great place to meet boys, and there were so many factory love affairs that the company magazine would include photographs of all the latest weddings The social life the factories offered was unrivalled, and as well as the Tate Institute, the workers also had their own playing field
But it was the friendships that former sugar girls remember most By 21 most of them were married, and their time at the factory was a rare period of independence and fun, before the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood took over
Sweet memoriesA new book lifts the lid on life as a sugar girl at Tate & Lyle’s factories in the 1940s and 1950s Authors Duncan Barrett and Nuala Calvi give a taster ahead of their book talk at Wanstead Library this month
Learn more about the lives of the sugar girls at a book talk on Friday 20 April, 715pm, at Wanstead Library Tickets cost £5 – call 020 8708 7400 The Sugar Girls is published by Collins, priced £699 To read extracts, visit www.thesugargirls.com

Two local ballet school pupils selected for West End show
Two young girls from the Redbridge Classical Dance Studio school of ballet, which holds classes at Wanstead House, have been selected for the London Children’s Ballet performance of The Little Princess in the West End this spring. Madeleine Cole, 11, and Ella Murray,
13, auditioned along with over 500 other hopefuls, and the Royal Ballet choreographer Samantha Raine had the task of selecting just 55 children to perform in the full production. The show runs from 19 to 22 April at the Peacock Theatre. To book tickets, call 0845 412 4300
Fundraising event for World Challenge expedition
A group of students from Wanstead High School, who will be embarking on a World Challenge expedition to Tanzania in 2013, are organising a fundraising race night at the school this month. Part of the World Challenge experience – which will include visits to projects in Tanzania that focus
on helping schools and orphanages – is for those involved to raise money towards the cost of their trip, and it is hoped the race night will be well supported by local residents. Tickets to the event, which takes place on Saturday 17 March, are £8 each. To book, call 07956 471 422
A popular sale of used baby and children's clothes, toys and equipment returns to Christ Church hall in Wanstead this month. Organised by the Redbridge branch of the NCT – the UK’s largest charity for parents – the sale will take place on Saturday 24 March from 11am
to 12.15pm. Jano Goodchild, chair of the Redbridge NCT, says: “NCT’s nearly new sales are a win-win situation for parents. They can make a bit of cash by selling items they no longer need and pick up a bargain, all while preserving the environment." Visit www.bit.ly/nctmarch
