  • Dozens of NorWest staff, volunteers and community members showed their pride and support for the LGBTQ2+ community at Winnipeg’s 32nd annual Pride Parade in June.

NorWest Co-op Community Health Centre participated in the festivities for the third consecutive year with a magnificent float! During the parade, we handed out packaged seeds from the float for people to take and plant in their homes. Rock band HamFist helped set the exciting mood, jamming out on our float and entertaining the crowd. Dancing, laughter and a good time ensued!

Residents of our Inkster community celebrated their own cultures and learned about others at our Cultural Day Celebration on August 30.

The event featured 41 performers who shared a piece of what makes their culture so sacred to them, through 14 different acts. Our Community Food Centre also served a record-breaking 147 delicious lunches!

Norwest Co-op would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to the 204 Neighbourhood Watch, which donated nearly all the food spectators feasted on during the performances. Thank you also to all of the incredible performers for lending their time and amazing talents, and to our volunteers for helping out. We couldn’t have done this without our community’s support!

It is because of diverse cultures we have here in Winnipeg and across Canada that our community is such an amazing place to live. We educate, we lead, we teach, we heal and we inspire those around us.

The different cultures we saw around us at Cultural Day showcased to us to never let go of who we are and where we come from.

As we looked around the room that day, and talked with community members and performers in the room, we realized how much everyone has contributed and is contributing into this outstanding community, province and this country.

  • Help yourself get healthy with HANS KAIAre you ready to take control of your own health, but don’t know where or how to get started? Hans Kai may be just what you need.

HANS KAI is a participant-led health program that empowers individuals to take an active role in improving or maintaining their own health and well-being. Participants attend a 9-week group health school, covering topics like healthy eating, meal planning, managing stress, physical activity, general health and more.

Once the health school is complete, groups continue to meet individually and conduct self-health checks including blood pressure, engage in physical activity, enjoy healthy snacks and have time to socialize. Some groups even plan additional topics or activities. HANS KAI is a great way to improve your health and have fun.

Want to learn more? Get in touch with Michelle at [email protected] or (204) 938-5996.

Where did Hans Kai come from?

HANS KAI means “group meeting” in Japanese. The program was started by health co-ops in Japan, and was brought to North America by NorWest Co-op Community Health and Cooperative Santé Robert-Cliche in Beauceville, Quebec. It teaches groups about factors that influence their health such as diet, physical activity, social support and physical health, and gives them the tools and knowledge to monitor these indicators.
