2 Wakefield 2014 Bull Sale

WELCOMEWe are pleased to welcome you to the ninth annu-al Wakefield sale. The cattle industry has entered into uncharted territory in 2014 with unprece-dented female slaughter numbers and coupled with unknown stock losses from drought and low conception rates there will be an alarming short-age of cattle in the foreseeable future.

Over the hooks prices have been remarkable con-sidering the pressure the market has been un-der but I think even the processors would have to agree that it has been a purple patch for them with big profits made. All the indicators are that the upside for cattle producers with a return to normal seasons will be enormous.

Our older daughter Lucy is currently in Canada on a working holiday (she completed her Rural Science degree at UNE last year) and has been visiting Charolais studs on her days off. She is re-porting back to us that commercial cow and calf units are realising up to $4000 regularly there!

The Canadian and US herds are at record lows following drought conditions and BSE problems, and the rebuilding phase is seeing prices not thought possible. Are we next? Considering the seemingly insatiable growth of beef exports into Asia, the high prices and low cattle numbers of our overseas competitors the future seems bright-er than it has possibly ever been. Perhaps even the supermarket duopoly will have trouble keeping the lid on this one.

Despite being a bit sarcastic about the supermar-kets one good thing Woolworths have done re-cently is to embrace the Pasture Cattle Assurance System (PCAS) with over the hooks prices being offered in excess of any premiums available for black cattle. When you factor in the extra 30 plus kilograms you will get from crossbreeding the ex-tra profit is substantial. There are still supplemen-tary feeding options available such as molasses, protein meals and any form of hay without grain

heads. There are no breed requirements, grading similar to MSA and will provide another lucra-tive outlet for grass fatteners. We have been PCAS accredited now for nearly 12 months and have found the audit process to be reasonable and very worthwhile particularly given normal seasonal conditions.

We would like to congratulate our bull buyers whose cattle have still sold well under difficult circumstances. The Wakefield bull breeding pro-gram is tailored to produce calves which will fit the specifications of a wide range of markets and remember we are a commercial operation as well and have a good understanding of what is re-quired. We appreciate feedback from our clients on how our bulls are performing and it helps us to make more informed breeding decisions.

Once again 2014 will see the majority of our pure-bred calves born by AI and embryo transfer with the emphasis on breeding tough cattle that are at the top of the breed for dollars earned. None of the bulls have had any foot trimming so what you see is what you get! The bulls have been prepared on a mainly silage ration with a light grain sup-plementation and will be in a forward but not fat condition. We do not aim to present 1000kg bulls for sale but prefer to produce bulls that can be put straight to work. Quite a few of our bulls are jumped directly off the truck straight into client’s cow herds!

We look forward to seeing you on the Friday the 8th of August at our “all weather” sale complex. Complimentary lunch will be available prior to the sale, which commences at 1pm. Remember if you would like any more information we are only a phone call away and on the day pack a jumper!

STUD HISTORYThis year we celebrate 154 years of continuous cattle breeding and Wakefield has been held in the same family since 1860. Wakefield began breed-ing Charolais in 1970 when the breed was first introduced into Australia and used most of the early French bulls in grading up programs until currently a herd of 450 Charolais, Charolais com-posite and Angus females are maintained.

Through the years there have been selected intro-ductions of stud Charolais females, purchase of embryos, regular artificial insemination and em-bryo transfer programs. We have been breeding Angus for our composite program for many years and made the decision to join our grandparent lines to Angus to produce purebred.

In combination with upgrading these cows to APR status and introduction of industry leading embryos the Angus herd is growing rapidly. Our emphasis is to produce bulls to increase profit in our client’s herds and the calves born over the next few years will be sired by a smaller number of select sires.

This year our emphasis is leaning towards a small number of Canadian, French and Australian Charolais sires that have the balance of growth and carcase characteristics we require. Less reli-ance will be placed on American Charolais sires, which in general are lacking top end growth and

uniformity.

Wakefield was amongst the pioneers in the use of Charolais Composite bulls and it is pleasing to see Charolais being recognised as the “breed of choice” in crossbreeding programs. We are find-ing that many purebred herds are using compos-ite bulls to produce a three-way cross and cross-bred herds are coming back to purebred Charolais bulls to stabilise their genetics. A lot of herds are using composite bulls as a stepping stone into the Charolais breed and quickly realise the financial benefits of crossbreeding. Our aim is to breed moderate birth weight Charo-lais while maintaining good growth and carcase characteristics.

Wakefield is a Group Breedplan member so EBVs are available on all purebred bulls and our herd is based around selecting for commercially impor-tant traits, we are bull breeders not bull feeders.

Structural correctness is very important to us and we like to have feedback from our clients to make sure the bulls are performing well under all con-ditions.

We are proud of our sale bulls and can recom-mend them to you as herd improvers and they can be purchased in the knowledge that they will perform well under commercial conditions.

CARING FOR YOUR BULLThis year’s sale bulls range from 13 - 25 months of age and need to be managed accordingly. There are many advantages in buying younger bulls; You see the bull closer to the weights you are likely to be marketing your cattle at, You will get an extra year of use from your bull and most importantly you are getting the ‘pick of the crop’. In our experience the best bulls will be good at all stages of growth and not only when they are mature. You can be confident that a young bull with eye appeal will only get better! But younger bulls are still growing quickly and need enough feed to maintain their growth pattern while settling your cows. Younger bulls can be introduced into paddocks with older bulls but remember he will be on the bot-tom of the pecking order and will need room to avoid the others. His nutritional requirements will be great-er than a mature bull so make sure he has adequate feed.

Our bulls are used to running in a mob and will arrive in a strange environment at the purchaser’s property. Unload him and if possible make sure he has a steer or cow as a companion straight away. Our cattle are mustered on motorbikes and are handled gently but firmly. The bulls have been trained to respect electric fencing.

GETTING RESULTSWingham Hoof And HookCongratulations to Peter and Diane Purcell on their outstanding results at Wingham Hoof And Hook Competition recently. The calves are from Angus cows and sired by a Wakefield Charolais bull. They were prepared and presented by NEGS.

Congratulations to Graham and Robyn MacDougallThe long time purchasers of Wakefield bulls, had tremendous results for a large mob of steers at Mort & Co’s Grassdale feedlot. The steers averaged 2.77 kg per day from induction with absolutely amazing feed conversion.

Graham and Robyn run a F1 Brahman x Angus cow herd joined to Wakefield Charolais bulls.

‘Mort & Co are delighted to be feeding cattle of the quality of MacDougall steers. They per-form well above average against thousands of cattle we feed with a consistent conversion ratio (kg dry matter ration to convert 1kg beef) of 4.5:1. The steers are young with excellent con-formation, softness, and temperament and have the versatility to meet various markets – from domestic trade weight to 100 day export market. I can thoroughly recommend Wakefield genetics to add value to your breeding program’.

UNDERSTANDINGUnderstanding Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs)

Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) are predictions of an animal’s genetic merit, based on available performance data on the individual and its relatives. EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait. They are shown as +ive or -ive differences from the breed base. As the breed base is set to a historical benchmark, the average EBVs of animals in each year drop has changed over time as a result of genetic change within the breed. The current breed averages are shown below. These averages provide a useful benchmark for comparing EBVs for animals.

CALVING EASE TRAITS Calving Ease (DIR): estimate of genetic differences among animals in the ability of their calves from 2 year old heifers to be born unassisted. Higher, more +ive, Calving Ease (DIR) EBVs are more favourable. Calving Ease (DTRS): estimates of genetic differences among animals in the ability of their 2 year old daughters to calve without assistance. Higher, more +ive, Calving Ease (DTRS) EBVs are more favourable. Gestation Length: estimate of genetic differences among animals in the number of days from the date of conception until the calf birth date. Lower, or more -ive, Gestation Length EBVs are generally more favourable. Birth Wt: estimate of genetic differences between animals in kg of calf birth weight. Calf birth weight is the biggest contributing factor causing calving difficulty in heifers. While low Birth Wt EBVs are favoured for calving ease they are also often associated with lower growth potential. Small, or moderate, Birth Wt EBVs are more favourable. FERTILITY TRAITS Days to Calving (DC): estimate of genetic differences among in female fertility, expressed as the number of days from the start of the joining period until subsequent calving. Females with shorter DC EBVs tend to commence cycling earlier after calving and conceive earlier in the joining period. They also tend to attain puberty at a younger age as heifers. Lower, or more -ive, Days to Calving EBVs are more favourable. Scrotal Size: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in scrotal circumference at 400 days of age. Increased scrotal size is associated with increased semen production in bulls, and earlier age at puberty of bull and heifer progeny. Larger, or more +ive, Scrotal Size EBVs are more favourable. GROWTH TRAITS 200-Day Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in weight at 200 days of age. This is a measure of an animal’s early growth to weaning. It is an important trait for breeders turning off animals as vealers or weaners. 400-Day Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in weight at 400 days of age. This is an important trait for breeders turning off animals as yearlings. 600-Day Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in live-weight at 600 days of age. This is an important trait for breeders targeting the production of animals suited for heavy weight grass finished or grain fed market MATERNAL TRAITS Milk: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in milk production potential, expressed through variation in calf growth performance. Larger, more +ive, or moderate, Milk EBVs can be more favourable, depending on the environment. Mature Cow Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in cow weight at 5 years of age.

CARCASE TRAITS Carcase Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in hot standard carcase weight at 750 days of age. Larger, more +ive, Carcase Weight EBVs are more favourable. EMA: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in eye muscle area (cm2) at the 12/13th rib site on a 400kg carcase. Larger, more +ive, EMA EBVs are generally more favourable. Rib Fat: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in fat depth (mm) at the 12/13th rib site, measures on a 400kg carcase. More positive (+ive), or more negative (-ive), Rib Fat EBVs may be more favourable, depending on your breeding goals. Rump Fat: estimate of genetic differences among animals in fat depth at the P8 rump site on a standard 400kg carcase. More positive (+ive), or more negative (-ive), Rib Fat EBVs may be more favourable, depending on your breeding goals. IMF%: estimate of genetic differences among animals in percentage intra-muscular fat (marbling) in a 400kg carcase. EFFICIENCY TRAITS Net Feed Intake (NFI): estimate of the genetic differences between animals in efficiency. NFI is measured either post weaning (NFI-P), in young bulls and heifers, fed at around 300 days of age, or in steers fed at around 560 days of age (NFI- F). Lower, more negative (–ive) NFI EBVs are more favourable. TEMPERAMENT TRAITS Docility: estimate of genetic differences between animals in temperament. Docility EBVs are expressed as differences in the percentage of progeny that will be scored with acceptable temperament (ie. either "docile" or "restless"). Higher Docility EBVs are more favourable. $INDEX VALUES Long Fed / CAAB: suitable for a self-replacing commercial herd in temperate Australia targeting the production of steers for the long-fed markets that value marbling and 600 day growth. Heavy Grass Fed: suitable for a self-replacing commercial herd in temperate Australia targeting the production of heavy grass fed steers for markets like the EU and light grass fed Jap Ox. Emphasis is on growth and carcase yield while maintaining fertility and marbling. Short Fed: suitable for a self-replacing commercial herd in temperate Australia targeting the production of feeder steers and heifers for the short fed domestic feedlot trade. Emphasis is placed on growth to 400 days and high carcase yield while maintaining fertility and marbling. Terminal: suitable for a commercial crossbred herd where no animals are kept for breeding. For example- using Angus bulls over tropical cows, to produce pasture grown steers and heifers to finish with a 100 day feedlot period. Emphasis is on growth and carcase yield with no weighting placed on calving ease, female fertility or milk. TRAITS OBSERVED Indicates the traits that have been recorded for a particular animal and are contributing to the EBVs that have been calculated. These will appear directly below the table displaying the animals EBVs.

UNDERSTANDING ACCURACIES The accuracy associated with an EBV gives an indication of its reliability, and the likely extent of its possible change as more information becomes available. As more data becomes available on animals (or its progeny, or relatives) then the accuracy of its EBVs for particular traits will increase. Accuracies are influenced by the heritability of traits and the genetic associations existing between them. For lowly heritable traits, more information is required to achieve a similar accuracy to that of highly heritable traits. Accuracies are expressed as percentages. The higher the percentage, the greater the chance that the EBV is a close estimate of the animal’s true genetic merit, and the less likelihood that the EBV will change as more information becomes available.

Domestic Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commer-cial herd with a British cow base (eg Angus) targeting grass-finished production for the domestic trade. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 430 kg (240 kg HSCW and 6 mm P8 fat depth) at 12 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finish-ing ability.Export Index ($) – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (eg Angus) targeting the production of steers for export markets. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 700 kg (380 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 29 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.Northern Terminal Index ($) – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd in Northern Australia (ie Brahman cows) targeting the production of grass finished steers for the Jap Ox market. Steers are sold direct to slaughter at 630 kg (345 kg HSCW and 5 mm P8 fat depth) at 28 months. All progeny are slaughtered. In response to industry feedback positive emphasis has been placed on finishingability.

(380 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 29 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on fi nishing ability.Northern Terminal Index ($) – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profi tability per cow joined for an example commercial herd in Northern Australia (ie Brahman cows) targeting the production of grass fi nished steers for the Jap Ox market. Steers are sold direct to slaughter at 630 kg (345 kg HSCW and 5 mm P8 fat depth) at 28 months. All progeny are slaughtered. In response to industry feedback positive emphasis has been placed on fi nishing ability.AccuracyAccuracy (%) is based on the amount of performance information available on the animal and its close relatives - particularly the number of progeny analysed. Accuracy is also based on the heritability of the trait and the genetic correlations with other recorded traits. Hence accuracy indicates the “confi dence level” of the EBV. The higher the accuracy value the lower the likelihood of change in the animal’s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives. Even though an EBV with a low accuracy may change in the future, it is still the best estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for that trait. As more information becomes available, an EBV is just as likely to increase in value, as it is to decrease. Accuracy values range from 0-99%. The following guide is given for interpreting accuracy:Accuracy range InterpretationLess than 50% Low accuracy. EBVs are preliminary and could change substantially as more

performance information becomes available.50-74% Medium accuracy, usually based on the animal’s own records and pedigree.75-90% Medium-high accuracy. Some progeny information included. EBVs may change

with addition of more progeny data.more than 90% High accuracy estimate of the animal’s true breeding value. As a rule, animals should be compared on EBVs regardless of accuracy. However, where two animals have similar EBVs the one with higher accuracy could be the safer choice, assuming other factors are equal. For further information please contact the Charolais Society (02 6771 1666) or Charolais BREEDPLAN (02 6773 3059).

Notes: Hotstuff is a red factor polled son of AI sire Pinay out of a very stylish Harvie Jager Dam. He exhibits wonderful muscle, with a tremendous top line and a good temperament. Hotstuff has a softness wich suggests he'd be an ideal herd improver for all carcase traits especially the muscle component. He currently has the highest breeding value for EMA in Australia on Charolais Breedplan for 2012 drop calves! We have used this bull lightly in our herd as we think his pedigree says it all, as well as his eye appeal. Top 1% for 200, 400 and 600 day growth, EMA, RBY and terminal index, top 10% gestation length, scrotal, domestic and export indexes.
