In the Firehouse Gallery Solo Show by Joe Laceby Sept. 3 - 26, 2014 During the month of September, the Waimea Arts Council presents an exhibit of unique art photography by Joe Laceby. The show will open on September 3 at the Firehouse Gallery and will run through September 26. There will be an artist’s reception on Friday, September 5 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the gallery. Friends and the public are invited to attend. Joe Laceby is an artist living and working along the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island. Born in 1970, his life has always had an artistic element. He received his B.A. from the University of Hawai'i. Prior to that, Joe studied in Wyoming where he received his A.A. degree. Through the years he has focused on honing his skills in several mediums, including sculpture, metal fabrication and photography. Using these and other skills, he is able to meld the soft graininess found in old-style cyanotype photography with the polished hardness of steel framing. Further enhancing this is the plastic-like, fluid nature of hand forged elements. The culmination is a piece that works to form the intersection of visually soothing and thought provoking content. Be sure to drop by and take a look at this unique exhibit! "Blue-shi" Hand tinted Cyanottype with ink and applied pigments. "The Soryteller" Hand tinted Cyanotype with ink washes and applied Mica In the Back Gallery.... The back gallery mini shows have been set for the next few months. They wiill be as follows: September: " Have you noticed?" use your imagination here. October: "I LOVE This!" anything you really like November: "Coffee" to tie in with the Kona Coffee Festival. Anything vaguely related to coffee. December: Mini-solos. There will be up to 8 individuals featured, each with his/her own panel. Sign in sheets will be in the bunkouse a week or so before the hanging, so art can be dropped off during the week. If there is not a sign-in sheet, there are blanks in the gallery in the white 3-ring binder. Take down/take in is generally the last Sunday of each month. The Firehouse Gallery serves as a venue for Big Island artists by providing educational and creative opportunities for sharing work. Artists donate a percentage of any sales to the organization. During the month of September, theWaimea Arts Councilpresents an exhibit of unique art photography by JoeLaceby. The show will open on September 3 at theFirehouse Gallery and will run through September 26.

It's membership renewal time!Applications are now being accepted for membership in theWaimea Arts Council - new or renewal - for the year 2014-15.The membership year runs from Oct. 1 - Sept. 30 and all duesshould be paid on or before Oct. 1. You must be a paid memberto enter the Helen Cassidy Juried Show.

New Members: Applications for participating gallery artistmembership must be approved by the gallery committee.Applicants must present a portfolio of their work for review bythe committee. Anyone entering the Helen Cassidy Show mayuse their entries as their portfolio. All newmembers should readthe "Firehouse Gallery Rules and Guidelines" which can befound on our website under "Get Involved."

Renewals:WACmembersat the$50 levelduring the2013-2014fiscal year will not be required to submit a portfolio so long asthey maintain continuous membership.

An application form is on the last page of this newsletter, or maybe downloaded from our websitewaimeaartscouncil.org. It canbe brought in to the gallery or mailed in with a check.Participating members will also need to sign a liability waiver,which is on the samedownload. To access the forms, click on the"Get Involved" tab and scroll down the page. In addition, allParticipatingmembers should read the "FirehouseGallery Rulesand Guidelines" that can be found in the same page.

Participating members must also have their own GET license inorder tohave artwork for sale in thegallery. If youdon't haveone,and don't know how to get one, go to waimeaartscouncil.org andclick on "Get Involved". Open and read "How to get your GETlicense in Hawaii."

WACBunkhouse Use PolicyTheWAC Board of Directors has developed and approved apolicy clarifying the use of the space known as “theBunkhouse.”

It is our intention that the bunkhouse be used for activitiesthat support WAC’s mission to (a) promote the arts, (b)encourage artists, (c) provide a forum for art-­‐relatedcommunity events, and (d) support our status as a 501(c)3nonprofit organization.

We hope to offer more workshops and classes using thisspace. Tothatend,wewillbe installingdarkeningcurtainssothat a projector can be effectively used—while still allowingthe light to come in for thosewho need it for their activity. Aprojection screen has been donated and is available for use.It’s currently located in the tall closet in the front roomof thebunkhouse.

Other improvements will be added as we have a better ideaof how the space is used and what is needed to make thespace more useable. Please send any requests/ideas toSusan Harris ([email protected]) or Sam Cudney([email protected]).

Coming up in October - Calling All Artists30th Annual Helen M. Cassidy Juried Art Show

The Waimea Arts Council invites island artists to enter its 30thAnnual Helen M. Cassidy Memorial Juried Art Show held fromOctober 1 - 25 at the Firehouse Gallery in Kamuela. The entrydates are Saturday and Sunday, September 27-28 from 10 am to3 pm. The show will be on exhibitt during the entire month ofOctober.

This year’s judges are Richard Bodien and Shelby Smith.

RichardBodien is owner ofHawiGallery inKohala.He has beenactive in the arts as a painter, poet, and musician for over thirtyyears. He founded the Full Moon Poetry Reading Series inAustin, was co-director of The Literary Center in Seattle, andhosted the Pacific Poets and Writers Theater in Seattle. Hispoetry has been published internationally, his poem series"Cheating Death" has been scored by Scott Roller of Germany,and his play "Risorgimento Gates" was performed by the TaosDance Theatre and Chorus. Richard's paintings can be seen atHawi Gallery.

ShelbyB.Smith is currently theGallerymanager for theVolcanoArt center inVolcanoHawaii,Curating andmanaging aportfolioof 250 local Island Artists. Trained as an Architect, Shelby alsobegan working in Ceramics at the University of Kansas in 1998,where he received a double degree in Architecture and DesignCeramics, 2000. Shelby then went on to Apprentice with notedceramic sculptor JunKanekoat his studio inOmahaNebraska for2 years. Shelby received anMFA fromSan Jose StateUniversityin CA, 2006. Before Moving to the Big Island in 2011, Shelbywas the Ceramics and Glass Technician for SJSU’s Art Dept., aswell as a part-time instructor in the South Bay Area. He was thegallery Curator and Installer for the East Hawaii Cultural Centerin 2012-2013. He lives on the east side of the Big Island.

This art competitionandexhibition isopen toallBig Islandartistsage 18 and older. In order for pieces to be juried into the showartists must be members of the Waimea Arts Council.Membership is $25 annually and open to all individuals andbusinesses that support the purpose of the organization.

All media will be accepted. Entries will be judged using fivecriteria: originality, visual balance, visual clarity, personalexpression and execution of the medium. Cash awards in threecategories - two-dimensional,multimedia and photography, andthree-dimensional - will be announced at the reception onOctober 4. A visit by the State Foundation on Culture and theArts Purchasing committee is in the works.

This annual show is named in honor of Helen M. Cassidy whowas instrumental in establishing the Waimea Arts Council over35 years ago. In consideration of being permitted to enter my art work and to otherwise participate or attend any show thereofconducted by Waimea Arts Council or its Board of Directors, the undersigned releaser for himself or herself andhis or her personal representatives, heirs, and next of kin, hereby releases, waives, discharges and covenants notto sue Waimea Arts Council, its Boards of Directors, the County of Hawaii, and their agents, officers andemployees, and promoters, sponsors, advertisers, owners and lessees of the premises, all for the purposes hereinreferred to as releasees, from all liability to the releasor, his/her personal representatives, assigns, heirs and nextof kin for all loss of damage, and any claim or damage therefore, on account of injury to the person of releaseror damage to the property of releasor resulting in death of the releasor, whether caused by the negligenceof releasees of otherwise while the releasor is competing, working of for any purpose participating or attending anyshows conducted by Waimea Arts Council.

Releasor agrees to indemnity the releasees and each of them from any loss, liability, damage or cost releaseesmay incur due to the presence of releasor of his/her property in or upon Waimea Arts Council, whether caused bythe negligence of the releasees or other otherwise.

Releasor hereby assumes full responsibility for and risk of bodily injury, death or property damage due tonegligence of releasees or otherwise while in or uponWaimea Arts Council, and or while competing, officiating in,working or for any purpose participating in or attending any shows conducted by Waimea Arts Council.

Releasor expressly agrees that this release, waiver, and indemnity agreement is intended to be as broad andinclusive as permitted by the laws of the State of Hawaii and that if any portion thereof is held invalid, it is agreedthat the balance shall, notwithstanding, continue in full legal force and effect.
