A group of Lower Queen St residents want the 50kmh speed limit extended to Mc-Shane Rd to make their street safer, after another accident on the Richmond black spot last week. Two people suffered minor to moderate injuries after their vehicles collided on Lower Queen St last Wednesday. It is the

a dangerous stretch of road but it has become a lot worse since the new traffic lights were in-stalled. “Drivers have a free left turn (into Rich-mond Deviation) so they come up Lower Queen St to miss the lights on the State Highway,” Peter says. “Now there are so many trucks and cars going too fast and no footpaths.”Peter says he has sent “several submissions” to the Tasman District Council asking the 50kmh speed limit to be extended to “at least McShane Rd”, but has not had a response. Maxwell Clark and Shona McBride, who have lived on Lower Queen St for “just over 20 years” say they have also made submissions to council to lower the speed limit from 70kmh to 50kmh from the A & P Showgrounds to Nelson Pine Industries. “The traffic volume has increased immensely on this section of road in recent years,” Maxwell says. “Now residents find it un-safe entering or exiting their properties in this area and school children are taking their lives in their hands when they walk or cycle to school.”Shona, who has been hit by a car when pulling

over to enter her driveway, says the number and speed of trucks on that section of road is fright-ening, while another resident, Lyn Diesel says the 70kmh speed limit is “ridiculous”.However, council transportation manager Gary Clark says they are unlikely to change the speed limit in the near future because the 70kmh sec-tion of road is situated in a “semi-rural area”. The council is planning to review the district’s speed limits again later this year and he encour-aged the group to make another submission.

“We only had 45 per cent of our average rainfall from July to Decem-ber and it was cold and windy so the yields are down. But at this stage the fruit is looking really good.”Richard says it was also a season of firsts at Neudorf with the vineyard having its “first frost in 38 years” and the earliest start and finish to harvesting.Te Mania’s John Harrey says they planned to finish harvesting the last two or three varieties on their vine-yards at the weekend and although yields were down “about 30 per cent on last year”, the quality was good.“A lot of the fruit has been very good quality but we would have

liked a little more. The fruit ripened very quickly too so we were putting in some long days to get it all har-vested. But at least it’s looking better than it was at the start. It was cold and windy during flowering and we ended up with patchy fruit and open bunches.”John also says the rain that has been falling since Thursday has made the final stages of harvesting challeng-ing with the threat of disease affect-ing the grapes. “We’ve been okay so far but the weather ahead is patchy so we’ll have to keep an eye on it and make a decision when to pick.”Richad says the new asexual strain of powdery mildew that hit a num-ber of Marlborough vineyards had not been an issue in Nelson.

Lower Queen St residents, from left, Rebecca and Cullan Gibbs, Maxwell Clark, Peter Field, Lyn Diesel and Shona McBride want the 50kmh zone extended.

Kristina Thomas, Richmond

“It should be 50kmh, it needs to be slower where there are residential houses, then where the Headingly Lane turn off is, it should move to 100kmh.”

Julie Stewart, Wakefield

“It should probably be 50kmh until the houses stop, people are used to driving 50kmh where there are houses.”

Jaron McLeod, Richmond

“The speed limit should defi-nitely be 50kmh in a residen-tial zone.”

Luke Burke, Richmond

“I’ve seen some people con-fused by the speed limit there, I think it should be 50kmh un-til it gets to the rural area.”

There was another accident within the 70km zone on lower Queen St last week. Do you think the speed limit should be lowered in this area?

Two disabled Richmond resi-dents are “angry and disap-pointed” after they had their main forms of transport sto-len from outside their homes in Waimea Village late last month.Chris Tilley had his bike sto-len on March 30 while Kevin Jourdain’s expensive kick bike was stolen on the same night. The pair still can’t believe that someone would come into the secluded village grounds and take their bikes. “I’m in shock really,” Kevin says. “I’m not happy at all - I have no other form of trans-port.”Kevin, who delivers the Waimea Weekly and is study-ing graphic design at NMIT, says he uses the kick bike for his work and personal trans-port to get from his home to Nelson. It’s the second time he has had a kick bike stolen. The first time it was taken, Jim Mat-thews from Village Cycles re-placed it for free.Although Chris has got his bike back after it was seen lying in a ditch by a member of the public who reported it to the police, he is still angry that it was stolen.

Chris, who is a competitive weightlifter, says Waimea Vil-lage is so secluded and secure that the thieves took a big risk entering the property. “It surprised me, the risk of anything like this happening is so remote out here. But I’ve started putting a lock on my bike and put my spare key in-side,” Chris says. Chris, who uses the bike as transport to his job and par-ent’s house in Teapot Valley, says the theft has made him think about taking further se-

curity precautions.“I might start keeping some-thing inside for protection. I don’t want to hurt anyone but if someone broke in I’d protect myself.”Chris says he was “blown away and absolutely gobsmacked” to get his bike back, and wants to say thanks the person who found it and reported it to po-lice. Kevin says they both contacted police after the thefts but no one reported hearing or seeing anything suspicious.

If you think you know all there is when it comes to finding a solid property investment, think again. Even the most experienced home buyer can trip up on the many hidden prob-lems involved in property purchase. Fortu-nately, a seminar for all prospective home buyers is here to shed some light on the issues surrounding real estate. Envirocheck Forensics, Stevens Orchard Lawyers, Westpac and Hunt Building Consultants have prepared presentations on related topics such as weather tightness, unau-thorised building works, property contamination, the legal consequences on an adverse effect being identified and what the banks response will be. As a registered building surveyor, Grant Hunt will be speaking about the importance of pre-purchase inspections, critical things to look for when viewing an open home, the processes and costs of remedying a leaky building and le-gitimising any illegal building work; something that once you buy, you may be responsible for. Envirocheck Forensics Nelson is passionate about raising the awareness of Methampheta-mine contamination to properties, which can

not only seriously harm your finances but your health. Even the use of the substance by a pre-vious owner or tenant can contaminate the property to a hazardous extent, so it is always advisable to that a professional test is carried

out to be sure any home you are thinking of purchasing is safe. While Stevens Orchard and Westpac representatives are happy to answer any gen-eral questions regarding purchasing property, their presentations will focus on the legal implications where such issues arise, and in terms of the lending, how the bank will react to any adverse effects on your

property’s value. The cost of rectifying a home that has weather tightness issues is expensive enough, let alone remedying chemical contam-ination that has, in cases of serious contami-nation, seen houses demolished. This issue is more common than you may think. The seminar is invaluable for those on any level of the property ladder and entry into it is free. Simply email your RSVP to [email protected] by 4pm April 17. The seminar will be held at the Honest Lawyer Hotel from 6pm.

Some passengers on the can-celled Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Nelson last month are threatening to go to television show Fair Go after they were denied compensa-tion for accommodation costs – while others were refunded.Eddie Bradford, of Richmond, was on the flight and says he does not accept Air New Zea-land’s reasons for the cancella-tion and he has written to them seeking a suitable response.“When you book a flight it is just like a contract, we hon-oured our side by paying $1100 up front but they didn’t honour their side of the agreement,” says Eddie. His frustration is further exas-perated after hearing that an-

other couple on the flight were refunded their accommodation costs and credited airpoints for the cancellation.Craig Davies wrote an email complaining about the can-celled flight and the lack of service from Air New Zealand staff. He was refunded for his accommodation costs and cred-ited with airpoints. But Eddie says he had no such luck. “We sent an email to Air New Zealand complaining about the lack of service and asked them why they had can-celled our flights from Auck-land to Nelson.

They sent back what seemed like an automated response, saying passenger safety is para-mount and that is why the flight was cancelled.“Because they have got the mo-nopoly, they think they can just walk over everyone,” says Eddie. The Sunday afternoon flight was cancelled last month after it was delayed several times. Air NewZealand admitted that the rea-son the flight was cancelled was because they wanted the plane back in Auckland for the busy Monday morning flights, and poor weather meant they could have flown to Nelson but not back to Auckland that night.Air New Zealand did not re-spond in time for our print deadline.

COLDEST DAY: The coldest day of the year was upon us on Tuesday with possible frosts to come later in the week. Temperatures were down to four degrees Monday night in Nelson and snow has covered the tips of the Mount Ar-thur and Lake Rotoiti ranges. Met Service mete-orologist John Law says the temperature drop is caused by winds coming up from the Antarctic.

PARK RESERVED WITH ROAD CONE: For over a year a Stoke resident has been reserving her own park on Lichfield St, but Nelson City Council says she has no right to. A neighbour of the cheeky driver, who did not wish to be named, posted a photo on Facebook of the car park after the woman had left. “She keeps these cones in her car and when she drives off she places the cone,” said the neighbour.

A third house fire in as many weeks has the fire service sounding more warnings as they prepare for their busiest time of year. The start of winter is a traditionally busy time for house fires and Nelson station of-ficer Darren Shackleton says people need to take precautions. The warning comes after fire destroyed an-other home, this time in central Nelson. The fire started at around 3am on Monday and quickly spread through Kelly Huang and La Per’s St Lawrence St home. The pair, who only bought the home a

month ago, escaped with Per’s mother, Ma Li, who also lives in the home. All three were checked by St John at the

scene with Ma Li sent to hospital for fur-ther checks.Darren has attended all three fires and says

the first two were started by battery charg-ers, while the cause of Monday’s fire hasn’t been determined yet.He says the number of fires is a concern and people need to check their electric blankets, clean out their chimney flue and dust off heaters before they’re used.“Fires from those three are a pretty com-mon occurrence, unfortunately.”He says they hopefully won’t be busy over the next few weeks but they’re bracing for the worst. “We cannot stand seeing people losing their homes and we want people to stay safe, but it can be a busy time for us.”

A large crowd celebrated this year’s apple harvest at the an-nual Wakefield Apple Fair held last Sunday.Organisers of the event say they were thrilled to see a steady stream of people through the gates and estimate attendance had quadrupled in size compared with last year’s event.People were encouraged to bring along their own apples and join in the process of mak-ing juice using vintage ma-chinery. There was a variety of apple-themed activities throughout the day including apple bob-bing, apple tasting and food stalls selling toffee apples, ap-ple pie and apple jelly.“The day has been fantastic, there are lots more people here compared with last year, we are just blown away by the community support,” says or-ganiser Amy Bucknall. The fair was held at Willow Bank Heritage Village, a pri-vate property owned by Chris-tine Grieder and Kim John Kerslake. The property is host to 15 re-located and restored buildings which encompass a variety of

items from antique toys and china to haberdashery. The crowd was entertained with live music by The Plink-ers and performances by the Morris Dancers.

A highlight of the day was a re-enactment of the ringing of the old Wai-iti school bells in-side a relocated Collingwood St church, which was built in the 1880s.

Super Gran, Wednesday, April 8: After their article in the Waimea Weekly, the Super Gran programme, run by the Te Korowai Trust, has already gained the interest of two more poten-tial Super Grans. Co-ordinator Betty Soane says she will be meeting with the two ladies in the coming week to discuss how they can assist the programme. She also says the article has made her a recognisable face around town, with peo-ple commenting on the great job that her and fellow staff running the programme are doing.

Mini Speed Record, Wednesday, April 8: At last count, the group of Nelson men aiming to set a new speed record in Bonneville have $401 raised through their Give-a-little page. The group currently hold the land speed record of 235 km/h for their class of Mini Cooper S, gained in 2012, but after partnering with Mini New Zealand, Maersk Line, Total Lubricants and the World of Wearable Art and Collectable Car Museum, they still require more sponsor-ship. You can help support their journey by vis-iting ‘project64’ at givealittle.co.nz

Hundreds of people ran, jumped, slid and swam around a muddy Wairua War-rior obstacle course on Saturday, giving the fledging event a great start. The race was held at Happy Valley Ad-ventures in Cable Bay where entrants could compete in either a six kilometre obstacle course or a double lap at 12km.Event organiser Greg Witika says he is pleased with how the event took shape. “The day has been fantastic. We had a re-ally good contingent of people coming

through for our first event.”He says he is already thinking ahead to next year’s course and making it an an-nual event. “We’ve already got a date locked in for next year. It’s amazing the support we’ve had so it’s definitely a goer for next year too.”A video of the event has been posted on-line at www.nelsonlive.co.nz and you can see a full gallery of photos at www.shut-tersport.co.nz.

A person’s health is one of their most important assets and one people don’t always appreciate until it’s gone. Dr James Chestnut is an inter-nationally recognised authority on health and wellness and before deliv-ering a presentation at the New Zealand Chiropractors Association AGM, he will be coming to Nelson on April 29, thanks to the regional members of the association. With 30 years experience in speaking, James began his career in sports science; he then completed a Mas-ters degree in physiology, worked as a chiropractor and then graduated into wellness care. His main passion is re-search into the reasons why humans have become the sickest species on earth and the solutions to get well and maintain health. Eat Well, Move Well, Think Well is an absolute must see for anyone inter-ested in bettering their health and lifestyle. His talk will also feature some action points for the audience to take away and put into prac-tice to immediately make positive changes in their lives. While James is a chiropractor, and the talk involves elements of the practice, the

overall presentation is to educate on a holistic approach to health and wellness, including ex-ercise, the nutrients we put into our bodies and the power positive thinking has over us.

This event will have national and international conse-quences as the majority of the proceeds will be going towards chiropractic re-search in New Zealand. A re-cent study has demonstrated that full spine chiropractic care has a positive effect on muscle strength, the brain’s ability to drive muscles and the prevention of fatigue. A further study done with the elderly over a 12 week peri-od showed that chiropractic care not only helped them to feel better, but improved their reaction times and abil-ity to process information. Tickets to the event are just $25, which will be held at the

Theatre Royal from 7:30pm. Book yourself a spot at www.ticketdirect.co.nz. Take advantage of James’ knowledge while he’s here and if you need any chiropractic assistance, contact your local practice, Tasman Bay Chiropractic at 64 Oxford St on 544 4554.

Wakefield’s new policeman, Peter Jack-son, is enjoying the variety and com-munity policing involved with working in a small town.Peter joined Marty Tutton at the Wake-field Police Station last November af-ter long-serving senior constable Peter Cobbledick retired. Although Peter Jackson has spent most of his 19 years in the police force based in urban areas, he says he has always been interested in working in smaller communities like Wakefield. “It’s the sort of policing that appeals to me,” Peter says. “You get more time to talk to people and get in-volved with the community.“There’s only two of us here so you are not just another cop. You are more part of the community here and you have to take ownership of that community.”Peter joined the police in Wanganui before transferring to Nelson in 2004. He has worked in the Nelson and Rich-mond stations and has also had a two-and-a-half year stint in Greymouth. Peter’s wife, Robyn, is also in the police, which Peter says “can be interesting”. They met while doing service in the Solomon Islands.“When I was doing shift work, there were times when you don’t see each

other for quite a while. We also talk about work a lot and bounce ideas off each other, although sometimes she can’t say a lot because she’s in the CIB and some of her work is sensitive.”Peter says he joined the police “because, like everyone who joins, I wanted to make a difference. It’s a job I really en-joy and I wouldn’t do anything else.” He says he is quickly getting used to polic-ing in a small town although he admits it does have some unique challenges.“I’d been a community constable and done Youth Aid before so I knew what to expect working in a smaller town. I’m really enjoying it because the people are generally helpful and we have a real-ly good community here in Wakefield.“But it does have some disadvantages. We cover such a big area that you can spend a lot of time in the vehicles.“We are also relying more and more on cell phones and that can be frustrating too because the coverage out here is not always that good. I think you have to be more circumspect about things as well because you are sometimes on your own. But we get a lot of support from the locals like the fire brigade and you know they will step up for you if things get out of control.”

Richmond-Waimea Returned Services As-sociation volunteers will be selling the iconic ANZAC poppies throughout Richmond on Thursday, with the profits helping to pay the medical bills of their returned servicemen.Among the volunteers will be Gwen Carter, a 10 year member of the Women’s Section of the Richmond-Waimea Returned Services As-sociation who remembers attending the AN-ZAC service with her parents ever since she was young. “My father was a farmer so couldn’t go to war, they needed the farmers here but he was in the home guard which, of course, trained at Rabbit Island. My uncle went to war and fortunately returned.”Gwen will be posted at the Richmond Mall with the rest of the RSA Ladies and she says she is look-ing forward to Poppy Day.“It is definitely rewarding. We often hear little stories and people are very gen-erous.”Poppy Day will be held from 9am until 5pm this Thursday, with poppies being sold at the Rich-mond Mall, Queen St and in front of Kmart and the Warehouse. Volunteers will also be selling poppies along Gladstone Rd, McGlashen Ave, Oxford St, Beach Rd and Wakatu Estate.President of the Richmond-Waimea RSA Ter-ry Richardson says poppy sales increased last year and he is hoping for good support again this year. “We nearly got 14,000 even though it was a terrible day, it really pelted down,” Terry says. “I think this year will be better if the day is fine.”Gwen also expects poppy sales to increase with this year’s centenary of the beginning of WWI.“There’s an increase in support of the RSA and ANZAC Day,” she says. “What’s being done this year for the centenary is just wonderful.”Gwen also recognises a greater awareness of ANZAC Day in the younger generations.“You see the young ones coming up to get a poppy, we make them feel special. It’s neat to think that the children want to wear a poppy.”

since the early 70s, joining to do their part for charity, as well as enjoying the

social elements if offered. Both ladies have now been awarded lifetime mem-berships. The annual fair is the organi-sation’s major fundraising event of the year and will be held at the Stoke Hall on Saturday, April 18, from 9am until

noon. The fair features a number of stalls including fresh vegetables, house

Boxing 'a joke':The picture of the lady boxers sharing a laugh after the "fight of

the night" says it all. What a huge joke! To celebrate Easter Eve with a night of violence is a shameful thing, and what an example to the young boys who are supposed to be the beneficiaries. Dis-gusting! Ren Kempthorne.

That's what I would do too, throw the cone! Maxine Foster.

There's a lady in Ranui who tried to force me out of her car park

on the road. My response was, 'I don't see your name on it!' Suggested she con-tact the council for reservation rights. The lady honestly believed she bought the park with the house. I now make sure I park in that spot. Sarah Davis.

Council need to visit Saturday market at 7am and see the deck

All you have to do is move the cone. Sheri Ropoama.

I had a note left on my car a long time ago saying not to park there

Yep, reports of fish getting caught all over the place! Just outside the cut, in the cut (20 lb snapper), Cable bay, Delaware, Cape Soucis, French Pass, Bottle point, and above Dur-ville Island, even out on the local groper grounds and all around. So, as predicated, the fish are in sea-sonal transit periods as water tem-peratures change within the Tas-man Bay. Here lies the old saying "any bait in the water" will have a chance of catching a reasonable fish, as proven recently by club member Luke Dell who snaffled another 20 lb snap on a no current, low tide situation. Tasman Bays’ fish popula-tion is starting to show signs of the massive 3-4 year perfect spawning conditions, with all species showing an increase in juvenile fish being caught at many locations. On this note, I personally would like to encourage Nelsonion fisho's to consider the option of "catch and release". I definitely am not saying to not take a feed of hard-earned fish home to feed yourself, family and important others; how-ever I am promoting the release of some of the bigger main breeding fish and in particular snapper and kingfish. There are already a lot

of very good fisherman practising catch and release principals and only really taking home enough to feed those on the boat for the day. There is just as much an adrenalin rush from having a hell demon fight with a big snapper or kingie, to then get a couple of quick photos and to watch them swim back down to the murky depths. Try it once, I am sure you will be amazed at the feeling of achievement and satisfaction. In particular, I would like to men-tion our king-fishery. We have po-tentially a world record size king-fish here, however it only takes one average-sized kingfish to feed four families. Although the limit is three per person per day, I would encour-age people to only take one or two maximum if they happen to chance onto more than that in a day. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club is a group of passionate fisho's and families who enjoy many types of fishing, please feel free to check out our Facebook or website simply by googling the club. Should you wish to join for the up-coming 2015/2016 season that starts in October, please contact us through those avenues.Enjoy your fishing and tight lines to all.

News14 WEDNESDAY 15 April 2015

The perfect modern leisure vehicle The perfect modern leisure vehicle The team at Richmond Cars and Commercial have some big news that you will definitely want to know about. A new range of motor home from one of the biggest manufacturers, Auto-Trail, means big things for those looking to get out on the road and enjoy the latest in motor home technology. Imala is a ground-breaking range featuring sev-en models, each one beautifully executed with everything you would expect in a modern lei-sure vehicle including full sized oven/grills with gas burners, 800w microwave, 80 litre refrigera-tors with removable freezer compartment and separate shower units. The best thing about it is that Richmond Cars and Commercials have been appointed the agents for the range for the South Island, a unique situation they are very proud to be in. With one van already secured and on display in their yard, more Imala vans are on their way and the team at Richmond Cars and Commercials invite everyone to come down, have a look and

see what they think. While there are a lot of fea-tures that set these vans apart from the rest, there are two particular things the cars and commer-cials team are thrilled to share with prospective buyers. Firstly is the location of the cabin door; while many motor homes have the door opening out onto the road, all models in the Imala range open onto the footpath or curb, perfect for New Zealand roads. The second thing is the price. Au-to-Trail have priced their Imala range extremely well, meaning the team at Richmond Cars and Commercials can sell a brand new van for what a lot of people are asking for a second hand one. Richmond Cars and Commercials encourage everyone interested in purchasing a motor home for the first time or updating their current model to come, explore the new Imala range and see for themselves why it’s such good value for money. You’ll find Richmond Cars and Commercials at 201 Queen St, or give them a call on 544 8000 to talk to the team about the perfect Imala model to suit your road-bound leisure pursuits. Adv.

Dogs are very social animals and Nelson has one of the largest dog populations in the coun-try. Unfortunately our dogs don’t always get to socialise with fellow canines and are often left by themselves when everyone is at school or work. Leanne Colley and Steph Scurr have been run-ning Doggy Day-care Nelson for three and a half years and are now celebrating their first birth-day as owners of the business. The centre features an indoor area with couches and bean bags, as well as a fenced outdoor area where the dogs can play and wear themselves out before going home. Leanne and Steph only cater to dogs during the day, they don’t offer any longer term boarding services, just a home away from home for your furry friend. Doggy Daycare Nelson supervise the dogs all day, letting them interact with each other and using only tone of voice, water and time outs to maintain a happy, social environment. Dog-gy Daycare Nelson operates four days a week

from its premises on Clover Road in Hope, and owners can either pick up or drop off their dogs before they head off to work, or Leanne and Steph can offer that service too. To cele-

brate their birth-day, they will be offering a month of free doggy transport from home to the day care centre until May 15. The cen-tre can cater to a maximum of 40 dogs with an average of 25-30 dogs enjoying the service most days. Social interac-tion is enhanced

for the dogs by grouping them with those who show similar play styles. For example they have a Chihuahua Pomeranian cross who spends his time alongside a St Bernard as they both enjoy taking it easy. A trial day at the centre will help determine whether your dog enjoys the day care scene so to book in for a visit, for more information on the conditions required for your dogs attendance, give Steph or Leanne a call on 542 3856.

Club Waimea has once again hosted the Easter Mixed Pairs South Island Indoor Bowls tourna-ment. To me it was a pleas-ure to renew f r i e ndsh ip s made two years ago, (al-though I am not a bowler) watch how well the event was managed and run, see new friend-ships being made and seeing some of our bowl-ers getting runner-up positions and semi- final places. Well done to all

who worked to make the event such a success. Well with daylight saving over until spring, the days are getting shorter and colder,

A winning weekendonships.Friday saw 84 entries into the singles competition which were whittled down to just 35 quali-fiers with the semi-finals con-tested by Mike King verse Bevan Matthews, both from the Hornby Club, and Stephen Grant from Clubs of Marlborough verse Blair Woods from Hornby. In the end Mike and Blair won their re-spective semis with Mike taking out the final. Saturday started with 57 entries into the pair’s section with 25 qualifying. The semi-final came down to Bevan Matthew and Richard Hamilton from Hornby verse Robin Wolland and Vicky Osbourne from Richmond WMC, the end of the match saw the Hornby pair victorious. The other semi-final was a close game with both teams from Club Waimea; Lloyd and Rhonda Bel-lis verse John Kenmare and Lil-lian Adams. John was one up go-ing into the last end, but Lloyd managed to get one shot so that meant and extra end. The toss was made and Lillian went first after the last bowl was played, both bowls were touching the jack, resulting in a drawn end. This required another extra end with John winning with his last bowl. The final match was con-tested by Hornby’s Bevan Mat-thew and Richard Hamilton verse John Kenmare and Lillian, with Club Waimea falling short of the win.

The triples section saw 14 teams qualify out of 35 with the semi finals between Mike King, David Philpott and Bev Diamond from Hornby, verse Jean McKenzie, MT Hooper and Mary Jordan from Club Waimea. The second semi was between Leo Ashby, D Morris and Eddie Ashby from Kaiapoi verse Maurice Berkeley, Kathleen Curtis and John Grey from Woolston. Maurice and Jean’s teams won their respective semis but in the end Maurice’s team took out the title. The final section in the compe-tition was the fours, of which there were 28 teams and just 9 qualifiers. In the semi-finals, Leo Ashby, D Morris, E Ashby and J Beckingsale from Kaiapoi took on Maurice Berkeley, Kathleen Curtis, B Henry and John Grey from Woolston. The second match was between Robin Wol-land, R Dalkie, V Osbourne and C Spicer from Richmond versesT Jones, G Severinsen, S Cooper and V Mathews from the Papa-rua Templeton Club with the teams of T Jones and Leo Ashby winning their respective semi-finals. The final results from the fours section saw the Kaiapoi team winning first place. There were four first time win-ners of the weekend including Bevan Matthews, Richard Ham-ilton, Donald Morris and Janet Beckingsale, plus two gold star winners, Maurice Berkeley and Edward Ashby.

The Seddon Shield may not be a particularly serious competition, but Club Waimea’s darts group will no doubt plan on doing their best to win all the same. The Seddon Shield tour-nament encompasses all chartered clubs within the Seddon area; in fact it’s ba-sically a Top of the South Island event with club’s en-tering from Marlborough, Nelson and even Hokitika. With a 27 year history, it’s an event that brings darts enthusiasts together for a fun tournament that is to be enjoyable as well as com-petitive. Club Waimea will be represented by around 20 competitors in a competition that numbers 110 overall. Day

one will see the ladies and men’s pairs play off for the title, followed by ladies and men’s singles on day two and finishing on day three with mixed pairs.

Other awards are also avail-able for best presented team, most improved junior and even a personality trophy. With a good haul last year, including wins in the ladies singles section, ladies pairs section, ladies pair plate round and a second in the mixed pairs, Club Waimea will be expecting a success-ful 2015 tournament. The Seddon Shield tournament is

being hosted by Club Waimea over three days from Friday, April 1 until Sunday, April 3.

Craig Anderson has a long history in Rich-mond, 46 years to be precise, and things have changed a lot since it was established all those years ago. Several years after the practice began oper-ating, Patrick Adamson started work there and he is now proud to say that he has been a chartered accountant with Craig Anderson for 30 years this April. Patrick completed his apprenticeship with Price Waterhouse in Christchurch and returned home to Nelson in 1985 with his wife Rosalie to take up a sen-ior accountant’s position with Craig Ander-son in Richmond. At the time, the practice

was the only chartered accountant’s firm in Richmond. When Ted Anderson established the business, he specialised in farming and forestry. Today, there are a number of indus-tries that require the services of Craig Ander-son, from retail and manufacturing to trades, in addition to the primary sectors of farming, fishing and forestry. While there has been significant change in the town of Richmond over the years, and huge technological changes in the accountancy industry, Patrick believes that the secret to success in business remains the same; having high quality staff providing the best possible

service to meet the wants and needs of the clients. In the world of accountancy, the advances in technology couldn’t be more appreciated. In 1985, the whole practice was run with two computers using floppy discs. Now computers are faster and huge amounts of information can be stored on a tiny USB stick. Accounting packages have also changed, moving more and more into the “cloud”. The needs of clients using the services of the practice have also changed. One thing hasn’t changed though and that’s the quality of service you will find when you deal with the staff at Craig Anderson. The practice prides itself on being friendly and approachable and while larger firms may view their clients as a number, Craig Anderson take a personal approach that both staff and clients appreciate. Of the eight staff that now make up the practice, many of them have worked for Craig Anderson for 10 or more years, meaning customers build a rapport with one of the

staff and continue to work with them for their accounting requirements. Ted Anderson, founder of the business and Patrick’s mentor, still calls in for a few hours each week, even though he has been unofficially retired for 11 years. After running the business as a solo practioner, Patrick is pleased to welcome Marina Buonocore as a partner, the first female partner at Craig Anderson Richmond. Marina has worked at Craig Anderson for 11 years, with a break of three years, during which she worked in corporate accountancy. This experience make her a valuable asset to the team. She also has excellent technical skills when it comes to computers, including helping clients get to grips with accounting software. Marina enjoys the

interaction with both clients and staff. “The team here are fantastic, you spend a lot of time at work and you need to get along with the people that you work with. We enjoy each other’s company and it’s a small group but they are all willing to go the extra mile, not only for us but for the clients.” Marina’s promotion to partner of the business is not only an opportunity for personal development, it’s also a chance for Patrick to take advantage of fresh ideas and someone else’s input for the future growth of the business. Both Patrick and Marina agree it’s the people they help that provide the highlights in their day-to-day work. “We enjoy dealing with peo-ple and helping clients in their busi-ness. Everyone gives accountants a hard time for being number crunch-ers, but there is a lot more to it than that. Anyone can process numbers

with computers, but being able to understand and interpret the infor-mation and help people go forward in their businesses is really the side that makes it exciting and challeng-ing,” says Patrick. As Craig Ander-son celebrates 46 years in business, it can also boast a number of its original clients, some of whom the firm has dealt with for three genera-tions. Looking ahead to the future, Craig Anderson is committed to growing their own business while continu-ing to help their clients succeed. The world is changing, technology is still changing and the way accounting is done is changing says Marina. With Xero and MYOB following suit we can provide real time reports. Craig Anderson is a certified Xero trainer and advisor and can help clients make the move. “One of our objectives is to get out

and visit our clients more so we can see them operating in their business and gain a better understanding of what they are trying to achieve, what their problems are and how we can help them run a successful and efficient business.” Craig Anderson wants to worry about the things clients don’t want to think about, such as income tax, GST, wages, FBT, etc so that they can focus on the important aspects of their business.Patrick and the team thank the firm’s wide variety of clients for their support over the many years and are also keen to advise that, for the first time in years, Craig Anderson has excess capacity and is looking to take on new clients. So if you are looking for a chartered account-ant in Richmond, with years of practi-cal business experience and a personal, friendly service, give the practice a call today on 544 6179, or visit their website www.caca.co.nz.

A new networking group for women who own or run smaller businesses in Nelson, Stoke, Richmond, Brightwa-ter, Wakefield and Mapua is starting later this month.Jessie Sutton of Curves Gym Stoke Richmond and Jacin-tha Atkinson from law firm McFadden McMeekin Phil-lips decided there was a need for the group after discussing the challenges facing women working in smaller local busi-nesses. They formed a focus group of six women to develop the guidelines for the networking group which will be holding its first meeting at Curves Stoke Richmond on April 29.“I work in relative isolation so I thought it would be a good idea to form a network group for businesswomen like me,” Jessie says. “Jacintha is one of our clients and I talked to her about it and she was enthusias-tic about it too so we set up the focus group.”The networking group will meet on the fourth Wednes-day of each month and will be hosted by a different member business each time. Jacintha says it will be a chance for women to showcase their

businesses, services and prod-ucts as well as network with each other.“There are a lot of smaller busi-nesses in Richmond and Stoke but there are not a lot of sup-port networks out that way so we saw an opportunity to set up a network.” Jacintha says the network will not have any joining fees and they will “move the meetings around the businesses” so that it doesn’t place any financial pressure on the businesses. “There’ll be no cost and it will be very informal.”

Jessie says the first meeting at Curves Stoke Richmond will include an opportunity, for those who are interested, to try out a free 30 minute gym cir-cuit so women need to bring some suitable gym clothing. There will also be a draw for a free membership to the gym.The meeting will be held at the gym at 3 Elms St, Wakatu Es-tate starting at 7pm. Anyone interested in attending will need to RSVP by emailing Jessie at [email protected] or Jacintha at [email protected]

Adopting a “one stop shop” concept for property maintenance has been the hallmark behind the success of Manor Property Services Ltd (MPS). From humble beginnings in 2010 MPS has developed into Nelson’s premier property maintenance provider, deliver-ing a wide range of services to commercial and domestic prop-erty owners, investors, property managers, body corporate and government agencies through-out the Tasman region. A move into new premises a year ago in lower Vanguard Street has provided the com-pany with an increased profile and a larger facility to base its fleet of 12 vehicles, 31 staff and vast array of machinery and equipment.MPS has invested in making sure they have the right skill sets and the right equipment to han-dle all aspects of property maintenance, from painting and decorating, gardening, cleaning, rubbish removal, arborist work, roof and house washing, fence construction, decks and retain-ing walls to all aspects of building. One of the key points of difference for Manor Property Services is that they can provide mul-tiple services with just one phone call. That’s a really attractive proposition for many property

owners and managers who can have the carpets and windows cleaned, trees trimmed and ga-rage door painted ready for the next tenant, all

by one company on one invoice. Another key point of difference is that MPS staff are employed by MPS. They don’t use other third party contractors like some other opera-tors. Enjoying the Richmond Library’s April Allsorts holiday pro-gramme last week were, from left, Bella and Rosie Goomes, Eli Newton and Rowan Cockburn and her mother Michelle Houston.

Have you seen the cross on the hill? You most likely have if you’ve taken a drive any-where north of Richmond in the evening over the past few weeks. It was pretty hard to miss. So here’s a question. Why would anyone go to the trouble of mounting a cross on hill over-looking Richmond and then light it up at night? That’s what I wanted to find out. So I took a drive up there one evening with a group of peo-ple from Grace Church (they are the culprits). I had only arrived in Richmond a few hours earlier and I was intrigued as to what this was all about. After navigating our way through a few gates and some stray cattle we made our way up the hill to where the cross was erected. It wasn’t quite dusk so I had some time to take in the view. It really was breath-taking. Beyond Tasman Bay there was the outline of Mt Arthur, the Moutere Hills and the faint lights of Motueka. And then to my right I could see Stoke, Tahunanui and Nelson South. And there beneath us lay the set-tlement of Richmond. Would they notice the cross? Would it mean anything to them? Almost 2000 years ago, a man was impaled on a cross just like this, by a crowd of people who wanted him dead. His crime? He claimed to be the Son of God. It sounds crazy, doesn’t it? That’s what the crowd thought. Well, three days later he rose from the dead. And his body has never been found. Perhaps he wasn’t so crazy after all. I wonder what knowledge of Jesus you have? Who he is, why he came and what he did. I am constantly amazed how people are una-ware of these things. Perhaps they think it doesn’t matter. It has no bearing on their lives. But that’s where they are wrong. Because what Jesus did on that cross has changed history for-ever. Jesus gives hope and joy and meaning to life and death. Some recommended reading would be the in Gospel of Luke in the Bible. Luke was an histo-rian and knew what he was doing. You’ll find all you need to know there. Just remember, it’s not about religion. It’s about a person. And he’s very much alive.

Just a thought...

Grandparents, parents and chil-dren have all been enjoying free entertainment at the Richmond Library these school holidays as part of the library’s April All Sorts.Aimed at four to nine year olds, the programme includes story-telling, interactive songs and arts and crafts. It was held on three days last week when it attracted 55 children. The children made everything from crowns, stuffed fish, animal masks, picture frames, dream

houses and more.Abbie Rolfe, 7, made a glittery pipe cleaner bouquet. “My fa-vourite bit is doing the crafts”, says Abbie. The library has also been provid-ing free holiday entertainment for teenagers with its Midweek Movie Magic. It hosted another viewing on Tuesday this week. Tania Clarke says her daughter was a bit bored at home so they went to last Tuesday’s Midweek Movie Magic and both really en-joyed it.“The kids get to help pick the

movie and I hadn’t seen it before so it was good”, says Tania. “It’s nice to get the kids out of the house and do something”.The Richmond Library is also running a ‘My Dream House’ pro-ject. Children are given templates for caravans, castles, lighthouses or hobbit holes and asked to deco-rate them into their ‘dream house’.Children’s librarian, Lucy Brun-win says the project will spark creativity and is expecting a large amount of colourful dream hous-es, which will be displayed at the Richmond Library next month.

After-school sports have been a part of every kiwi kid’s childhood for many years. Thanks to Hockey Nelson, Nelson has its own fantastic junior hockey programme to get kids out and enjoying being active. The programme starts with Kindie Sticks, for chil-

dren aged three to five and focuses on fun, funda-mental skill games. It then moves through several levels including Fun Sticks for years one and two, Mini Sticks for years three and four, Kiwi Sticks for years five and six, and Kwick Sticks for intermediate ages. As children go through the levels of the junior hockey programme they move from fun skill games to more competition-based hockey, played between fellow teams. Leading up to the junior programme, Hockey Nel-son co-ordinators visit schools throughout the re-gion, sharing with children three or four lessons, showing them the basics of Hockey and fun games.

The introduction to the sport has proven extremely popular and, at the end of the visits, the schools are invited to take part in a ‘Festival of Hockey’ competition to put their newly learnt skills to the test. This in-cludes schools as far afield as Golden Bay and results in around 800 chil-dren gathering at the Saxton hockey turf to play the sport over two days. The school programme runs from February until the end of May and, along the way, those who wish to continue to play the sport can reg-ister to take part in the after-school junior hockey programme.Regional development manager for hockey, Craig Brett says that the numbers taking part in their after-school programme have seriously increased; around nine years ago they were operating it with around 40 kids, now numbers have jumped to around 600. The after-school pro-gramme runs for 10 weeks, this year beginning on April 30. Because they are still running their school visits when the junior programme starts, registration into the programme has no cut-off date and, thanks to gen-erous sponsorship from Heartland Bank, fees are extremely low. What makes the junior hockey pro-gramme even better for parents is that it is all run on a Thursday even-ing with no extra trainings to worry

about. The youngest level, Kindie Sticks, begins at 4:30pm and eve-rything is wrapped up by 6:30pm. Children participating are mainly grouped according to schools and are placed under the guidance of Nelson hockey clubs who are re-sponsible for uniforms and sourcing coaches, of whom 60 are involved with the upcoming junior pro-gramme. Unlike other sports, hockey is played year round thanks to artificial turf. Once the 10 week summer pro-gramme finishes, there is a short break before the winter season starts and, following that, children from the ages of eight and up are invited to take part in an extension pro-gramme which works on developing more skills. The players from these can then move into Under 11 rep-resentative programmes, or they can continue in a development program if they wish to remain playing at a social level. Hockey is a great sport for co-ordi-nation, fitness and socialising, so if you are interested in involving your children in the sport, don’t hesitate to register them into the 10 week junior programme today. Registrations can be submitted and paid for online, simply visit the Nelson Hockey site, click on ‘News’ and scroll down to ‘2015 Junior Winter Programme’.

Wakefield dressage rider Frances Dick has made an encouraging start to her campaign to try and qualify for next year’s Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, recording a personal best score at the Horse of the Year in Hast-ings.Frances and her horse Wel-tie scored over 70 per cent in all their tests at the pres-tigious competition, held from March 17-22 to win the grade two para-equestrian championship. They started the Horse of the Year by finishing seventh in the elementary competition before scoring 71 per cent in the team test and 72 per cent in the championship test and freestyle test. It was the first time that Frances, 31, has exceeded that score indicating that she and Weltie are making good progress after teaming-up two years ago.

“The Horse of the Year was not a qualifying competition, but the national selectors want riders to be scoring 70 per cent in all disciplines, so it was great to achieve that,” Frances says. “There’s probably going to be a qualifying event in New Zealand at the end of the year and another one in Aus-

tralia in January next year so I’ll look at riding in one of those.”Frances is hoping it will be third time lucky after missing out on the Beijing and Lon-don Paralympics. “I qualified for Beijing but New Zealand didn’t send a team that year. I also quali-fied for London but they

selected two other riders to go so I’ve just missed out - it would be a dream come true if I made it to Rio.”Frances, who has a condi-tion called hemiplegia which is paralysis to one side of the body with impaired muscle function, rides in the para-equestrian grade 2 category. Although she also competes in able-bodied dressage events, she says she has to ad-just her riding style to com-pensate for her disability.“I don’t have too much feel-ing in my right side which makes it quite challenging. Weltie has had to adjust to that too but he’s done that very well - he’s always want-ing to please you.”In addition to having a good horse, Frances says she is also fortunate to have a great net-work of supporters including her parents Yvette and Phil, grandmother Dorothy and coach Rachel Thomas. She says the Sports Nelson Tas-man Trust, Nelson Dressage Group and Farmlands are also key supporters.

The father and son pairing of Mark and Henry Jaine were the fastest riders in Sat-urday’s Port Nelson Kaiteriteri Six-Hour Mountainbike Relay Race but it was the solo riders who en-dured the most pain and the teams in fan-cy dress who had the most fun.Mark and Henry com-pleted 16 laps of the 7.5km circuit around the Kaiteriteri Moun-tainbike Park with Henry, 18, also re-cording the fastest lap of the day at 19min 8sec. Although Henry was riding two laps to his father’s one, Mark still contributed, con-sistently recording fast 22 minute laps to help them complete a hat-trick of wins in team’s races at Kaiteriteri.“I’m getting slower and Henry’s getting faster, but we still managed to win,” Mark says. “But it will be my last race for a while because I’m getting a shoulder reconstruction next

month - I hurt it when I crashed on Top Dog and it hasn’t come right.”Nelson’s Jake Stow and Ingrid Richter took out the solo rid-ing honours with Jake completing a leg-burning 15 laps and Ingrid riding 13 which, incredibly, was more than many of the teams. Craig Tolson and Cameron Jones both recorded 14 laps to finish second and third respectively in the men’s solo race while Bridget McMil-lan completed 11 laps and super-veteran Liz Eskrick rode eight in

the women’s.The Wild Waka Wom-en rode 13 laps to win the women’s team’s race with the Brook Badasses, Brent Ed-wards and Ash and Naomi Whitehead riding 15 laps to win the mixed section. The race for the best fancy dress prize was just as competitive with Emma Bawtree’s Wheel Woman Witch-es team, who rode the course wearing witch’s hats and black cloaks on bikes fitted with broom sticks, tak-ing the honours. A group of marine biol-ogists from Cawthron

and NIWA, Anna Berthelsen, Megan Carter, Robyn Dun-more and CJ McClay, showed their true col-ours by wearing fishy-looking bike helmets while the Bridal Gear’s Jenny Ferrier, Fay Mc-Kenzie and Deb Mor-ris rode in wedding dresses. Organiser Guy Trainor says 240 riders competed in the race, completing a total of 1055 laps. All proceeds from the race will be used to develop the Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park.

There were plenty of hugs and kisses awaiting competitors as they crossed the finish line of the McFadden McMeekan Phillips Lawyers Nelson Wom-en’s Triathlon last weekend.Around 250 women competed in the event which is aimed towards women of all abili-ties from beginners to more serious athletes and includes a 5km run or 3km walk, 14km cycle and four lengths of the Riverside Pool. In its 28th year, the race is seen as a starter into triathlons by many, which was confirmed by 62 first time competitors. “We were really pleased with the event, everyone seemed re-laxed and people were having fun, it was lovely to see families waiting for their competitor to come in and giving them lots of hugs and kisses as they crossed the finish line,” says organiser, Amanda Dykzeul. There were also a lot of women who had competed in the event many times over the years with four entered in the 70 years age group. One of the ladies, who gave some of the younger ones a run for their money, liter-

ally, was 71-year-old, Marion McIntosh from Hope. She has completed the race around ten times and won the over 60 years age group a couple of times before taking a hiatus from the event for eight years. She decided to have another go in the over 70s category this year. “I do a lot of biking and play tennis and have just com-pleted the Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail and my fitness is okay, so I decided to enter again. I re-ally enjoyed the event, every-one was so nice, it was lovely talking to the younger ones while waiting for the start who were first timers and so excited about it. It is great to see people getting out there and doing it,”

says Marion.Zoe King won the run section, with Renee Hunt and Kiri Wil-liams not far behind her. It was a race to the finish line in the walk section, with previous winner, Richmond’s Margaret Oliver beaten at the post by Blenheim’s Lisa Johnston. In the team section, the NBS Workmates Run Challenge was won by Jamiee Erskine and Jo Perrott from Riverside Pool and Nelson Radiology’s Julie Slade and Karina Murray won the walk. A standing ovation was given to the last competi-tor. “It was really nice that she fin-ished it, I bet she was so pleased with herself,” says Marion.

There was an upset in the rugby league results, with the Wander-ers Wolves beating the Richmond Rabbits 28 to 16 at Ngawhatu Park last weekend. The Wanderers Wolves were col-lectively very strong across the park with the two big front-row-ers, Lucaster Mati and Christian Tupuola, setting a platform up the middle.“We’ve worked pretty hard to get where we are today” says Wan-derers Wolves coach, Lawrence Curdy.Richmond Rabbits coach Deon Charles says his team was well and

truly beaten by a bigger and better team on the day. “They are a big side and it became pretty clear that, due to three of our props being out with injuries, we were lacking size up front on Saturday,” says Deon.He was proud of his players but says they were overcome by the size of the Wanderers Wolves. Sam Hedges played well for the Rich-mond Rabbits and a new member of the team, Dexter Buchanan, showed good form in playing a full 80 minutes at prop. Hooker Craig Shepherd also man-aged to play a full game, despite fracturing his wrist during the match.

Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys will be aim-ing to maintain the momentum they gained in the second half of last week’s 35-13 win against Stoke when they play Nelson in their Tasman Trophy and Car Company Nelson Bays divi-sion one club rugby game at Jubilee Park on Saturday.Waimea Old Boys produced a strong second half performance, scoring four tries to finally dispatch a tenacious Stoke and record their fourth successive win. But it was far from a perfect display with coach Mark Milne saying they lost too much posses-sion in a muddling first half before tightening up in the second.“Stoke came to play in the first half but we also failed to hold onto the ball. We’d do a lot of good stuff and then we’d lose the ball so we need to improve on that this Saturday.

“I don’t know why we didn’t get it right. It was probably just a mental thing so we have put a few things in front of the guys to focus for this week.”Mark says he was pleased with the way first five-eighth Rohan Saifoloi “ran our game” while openside flanker Sam Winslow “had a strong game”. “Sam had glandular fever last year so he didn’t really get going. He’s a very talented player so it’s pleasing to see him starting to play some very good rugby.”Mark says the team is looking forward to play-ing at home this Saturday. The game kicks off at 3.15pm.Waimea Old Boys Senior B won last Saturday’s game against Stoke 45-3. They play Nelson Senior B this Saturday, with kick-off timed for 1.15pm.

Richmond & Districts Information CentreVolunteers are required to work three hour shifts on a weekly or fortnightly basis at the Information Centre in Gladstone Road. Successful applicants would be required to work with more experienced volunteers initially before being asked to work on their own. Although applicants should preferably have a good knowledge of the local community, this is not necessary, as the Centre has a large data base. They should be well presented and enjoy meeting and conversing with visitors from all over New Zealand and the world. The Centre is well appointed with good facilities. If you are interested in this type of work, call in to the Centre or Ph. 03 543 9521 or contact Sally Symonds, Ph. 03 542 3983 for further details.Authorised by Keith Chaplin, Volunteer co-ordinator, Ph. 03 547 3116.
