About 30% less expensive than conventional slabs, saving you money More beams, closer centres than conventional slabs, stronger Our waffle pods are clean and top quality products with wide spacers (see photo) - greater balance and strength Less susceptible to changing weather conditions, wont crack WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WAFFLE PODS & CONVENTIONAL SLABS? 1. Concrete Consumption Conventional slabs use about 30% more concrete. This is due to the way the soil collapses into the trenches dug to create the beams. Waffle pods are a very uniform shape and size, and are set out using spacers accurate to a few millimetres and thus use concrete more efficiently. In this way, waffle pods benefit the home owner with significant cost savings, but losing nothing in strength 2. Drainage Capability Conventional slabs sit lower in the ground because the beams are formed by digging trenches in the dirt. The beams in the waffle pod slabs are formed by setting out boxes on top of the surrounding soil. This allows soil to be pushed up against the side of the waffle pod slab, therefore assisting drainage around the home. In this way, waffle pods ensure that your home will be set 300 to 600 mm higher than the surrounding homes and landscaping keeping your home high and dry! The best way to get decades upon decades of great slab performance is to ensure consistent moisture levels under the home (by staying high and dry). WAFFLE POD SLABS

WHAT ARE WAFFLE PODS?

This is where the concrete is sitting on (and around) a series of boxes (or Pods) set out in a grid pattern. Think of a waffle pod as a raft lying flat above your soil.

ARE THEY JUST AS STRONG AS CONVENTIONAL SLABS?

Waffle pod slabs are even stronger than conventional slabs, as the slab is poured as one piece

A conventional slab has the footings and slab poured separately

They are equivalent in terms of stiffness and flexibility

Both waffle pod slabs and conventional slabs are 85 mm to 110 mm thick concrete, as specified by the engineer, based on the soil type

Both slab types will have reinforced mesh 8-9 mm in diameter

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING WAFFLE PODS?

About 30% less expensive than conventional slabs, saving you money

More beams, closer centres than conventional slabs, stronger

Our waffle pods are clean and top quality products with wide spacers (see photo) - greater balance and strength

Less susceptible to changing weather conditions, won’t crack

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WAFFLE PODS & CONVENTIONAL SLABS?

1. Concrete Consumption

Conventional slabs use about 30% more concrete. This is due to the way the soil collapses into the trenches dug to create the beams.

Waffle pods are a very uniform shape and size, and are set out using spacers accurate to a few millimetres and thus use concrete more efficiently.

In this way, waffle pods benefit the home owner with significant cost savings, but losing nothing in strength

2. Drainage Capability

Conventional slabs sit lower in the ground because the beams are formed by digging trenches in the dirt.

F.A.Q’s (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q. Can pests get into waffle pod slabs?

A. There is the same chance for pests getting under a conventional slab as there are for waffle pods. We’ve been asked before about pests eating or moving the pods, which would not be an issue if they did as they don’t provide long term structural stability, just formwork at the time of the slab pour. That being said, we have never had a case where this has occurred as we properly back blade out waffle pod slabs after pour to ensure there is drainage away from the home and the bottom of the slab where pests could gain access is completely covered and underground. Without proper care there can be issues with any slab type.

On top of this, Termiglass uses Frizbee Collars on all plumbing pipes that come through the slab, this provides even greater protection against pests getting in as only waffle pod slabs have this feature. (See photo below)

Q. What are cold joints and does every waffle pod slab have them?

A. Cold joints occur when fresh concrete is poured onto cured concrete. Stroud Homes don’t have any cold joints in our slabs as our supervisors are on site for every slab pour, from the start to the finish.

Q. Can the concrete crack on a waffle pod slab and show cracking in the garage?

A The slab thickness on both a waffle pod and a conventional slab is 85-110mm. (Depending on the En-gineer’s design criteria) Unfortunately, with either one you can expect there to sometimes be small surfacecracks (less than 3mm). With some builders it can be more of an issue with waffle pods if they get concrete toothin in certain areas due to either not maintaining a consistent level or because they run out of concrete on thebuilder’s order (we never limit the amount of concrete going into a house slab, we use as much as is required)

Q. Is a waffle pod slab strong enough to jack a car up in the garage?

A. As above, the actual slab thickness is the same so if it was a problem for waffle pods, the same builder would have the issue for conventional slab as the ground under a conventional slab dries out and pulls away, not providing long term support to the home.
