SUMMER LEARNINGDuring the summer months many children are not as engaged in learning and reading activities as they would be while in school. The SPARK program helps children stay on track over the summer and read at or above grade level when the new year begins.

Studies show that without access to summer learning activities such as camp, travel, and visits to libraries and museums, students can experience more significant learning loss.

The day at SPARK is filled with fun enrichment activities like physical education, music, and arts, as well as a weekly field trip. Healthy breakfast and lunch are also provided.

BECOME A READING BUDDY

What can you SPARK this summer? You can help kids in Wabash County stay sharp over the summer! In collaboration with MSD of Wabash County, Wabash City Schools, and Manchester Community

Schools, SPARK provides literacy instruction from certified teachers to ensure that students do not experience summer learning loss, but in fact gain reading skills and can begin the next school

year right where they need to be. We need volunteer Reading Buddies to read with SPARK kids and provide encouragement.

What is a Reading Buddy? A Reading Buddy is a positive role model who spends time listening to a camper read and reading to a camper. Reading Buddies have the opportunity to model good reading habits and encourage campers. Reading Buddies can volunteer one, two or three hours per week for the six weeks of SPARK or even for just a single day. SPARK will run from June 15-WJuly 23 in Wabash and June 29-August 6 in North Manchester. Reading buddies are needed from 10:15 - 11am Monday through Thursday.

To become a Buddy contact Danielle Darnell, Site Director at [email protected]!

BUILDING POTENTIAL,CLOSING THE GAP

NEARLY 1 IN 2 YOUTH in U.S. public schools are from low-income communities, but where they live makes a difference:

ACHIEVEMENT GAP WIDENS OVER TIMEKids from low-income families often start school unprepared. Despite progressing at the same rates during the school year, gaps widen each summer—and students fall farther behind their peers. The gap culminates in low H.S. graduation and college attainment rates, limited job prospects, and negative economic impact.

ALL KIDS HAVE POTENTIAL. That’s why we support their academic, physical and social-emotional development from cradle to career with holistic programs that don’t just close the gap—they help kids realize who they are and all they can achieve.

JOIN OUR EFFORTS to help kids reach their full potential in your community. Learn more at www.ymca.net/youth-development.

KEEPING KIDS SAFE AROUND WATERWater Safety

MORE THAN JUST SAFETY

As the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning, the Y teaches more than a million children invaluable water safety and swimming skills each year. Research shows that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning among children one to four years of age.

The Y's new water safety and drowning prevention program, Safety Around Water, will help children and families learn the vital skills needed to be safe in, near and around the water. The program is designed to engage community partners

and parents to bring lifesaving skills to those at high risk of drowning. Y's across the country are taking this pledge to become a champion of the program to help children and families be safe around water.

THE Y: “AMERICA’S SWIM INSTRUCTOR.”

A PLEDGE TO SAFETY

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1-14.

Three children die every day as a result of drowning.

Drowning poses a threat to the health and well-being of people nationwide, particularly among children and minority populations.

It’s no secret that daily exercise leads to good health. But it can be challeng-ing to find an activity that keeps you coming back day after day.

We’re learning more about a fun sport that gets people off the couch and outside. It’s the sport with a funny name, it’s called pickleball. As we found out, from the moment you give it a shot, you’ll be hooked.

It’s part tennis, part ping-pong, and part badminton.

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America.

2015 marks Pickleball’s 50-year anni-versary! Pickleball is a fun game with parts borrowed from tennis, badmin-ton, and ping pong. It’s played on a badminton court with the net low-ered to 34 inches. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It’s easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced com-petitive game for experienced players. Pickleball is played in the blue gym with the court clearly marked.

Call to ahead to reserve court time!

PICKLEBALL - IT’S KIND OF A BIG DILL

It’s a great game and its popularity is increasing steadily. Come on in and have fun as you learn a new game. We have several members who play each weekday at 11 am and would love to teach you how to play. If you’re not ready to jump in on the court yet, come on in and have a seat on the bleachers and watch!

All adults are invited to join in the fun!

OUR COMMITMENT TO HEALTH

9children participating in out-of-school programs, the Y has a responsibility to the families and communities it serves to address rising obesity rates and other health concerns among children. Driven by commitment and cause, Y-USA pledged to educate kids about healthy lifestyles, model healthy behaviors and cultivate environments that make it easier for kids to make healthier choices.

CHOICES WITHIN LIMITS. HEALTHY EATING& PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STANDARDS (HEPA).

In response to a call by First Lady Michelle Obama and the Partnership for a Healthier America, the Y has expanded its longtime commitment to supporting healthy living by adopting a set of HEPA standards:

By implementing these standards, we aim to build a healthier future for our nation’s children by creating opportunities to make healthy choices.

The current generation of children may be the first in 200 years to have a

shorter lifespan than their parents. The main culprit: obesity, caused by lack of physical activity and poor nutrition.

Here’s what McKenzie, 16, says about her Safe Place experience:

“I was having problems at home and didn’t know how to deal with them, so I left. I remember learning about Safe Place in school, so when I saw the sign on the fire station near my house I knew they could help. I don’t know where I would be without Safe Place.”

Every day, more than 3,500 kids will leave home due to a variety of reasons, including abuse, neglect, family conflict, homelessness, and more. Your con-tribution will help National Safe Place educate more youth and communities

about Safe Place, connect more youth to immediate help and safety and support the TXT 4 HELP initiative. - See more at: http://nationalsafeplace.org

HOW DOES IT WORK? If a young person needs immediate help, they can depend on any location with the Safe Place sign. The following steps describe how Safe Place is intended to work:

Step One – A young person enters a Safe Place and asks for help.

Step Two – The site employee finds a comfortable place for the youth to wait

while they call the licensed Safe Place agency.

Step Three – Within 20-30 minutes or less, a qualified Safe Place volunteer or agency staff member will arrive to talk with the youth and, if necessary, provide transportation to the agency.

Step Four – Once at the agency, coun-selors meet with the youth and provide support. Agency staff makes sure the youth and their families receive the help and professional services they need.

The Wabash County YMCA is a SAFE PLACE site.

If you are a teen in a crisis, text the word SAFE, along with your current location (address/city/state), to the number 69866. You’ll receive a text back with an address of the nearest Safe Place site.

Over 9 million kids take part in our programs each year, where we help them realize their potential to be active, thriving and contributing members of society.

Youth come to the Y for our programs, but what they actually receive are fundamentals for healthy development. Staff and volunteers use programs as tools to transform kids’ lives across America.

When you give to the Wabash County YMCA, your gift will help young people achieve their potential, empower people of all ages to lead healthier lives, and strength-en the bonds of community in Wabash County.

Together, we’ll take on many of the greatest challenges facing our young people, our health and our community.

Now, when you think of your YMCA you’ll know it’s more than just a gym…it’s a cause. A cause, that, with your generous support, will continue to strengthen the community in which you live. GIVE. AND DO SO MUCH MORE.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTAll kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, under the guidance of adults who care about them and believe in their poten-tial. We see every interaction with young people as an opportunity for learning and development.

HEALTHY LIVINGHealth and well-being are all about balance. That’s why we help people and families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind and body in their everyday lives. By helping kids, adults, families and seniors from all back-grounds improve their health and well-being, we build a stronger community.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYWith our doors open to all, we work every day to connect people from all backgrounds and support those who need us most. We take on the most urgent needs in our com-munity and inspire a spirit of service in re-turn. Our members, volunteers, supporters and staff demonstrate the power of what we can achieve by giving back together.

A contribution of any size enables us to continue our level of financial assistance to our community’s kids. Together we can impact lives!
