Celebrating the aspirations and achievements of young musicians studying at the VSO School, the Future of Excellence competition selects a student to perform as soloist with the VSO. Taking place each spring, the competition is adjudicated by a panel of distinguished jurors chosen by Maestro Bramwell Tovey. (Please inquire for more information.)

Students enrolled in private lessons have the opportunity to sit onstage as listeners with the VSO during selected rehearsals, feeling the power of being onstage with a world-class symphony orchestra.

The most brilliant international performing artists pass their artistry on to the next generation in these open lessons in Pyatt Hall. All Masterclasses are open to the public.

All VSO School students and outside students are admitted to Masterclasses for free. Masterclasses are open to the general public for a fee of $10.

PRIVATE LESSONS AND COACHING

Among the finest in North America, VSO School classical, jazz and world music instructors work with all ages and levels, from our specialists in early childhood programs to training Canada’s next generation of professional artists.

Students can enroll in weekly lessons for the school year, for a term, or in an introductory package of 4 lessons to try out a new instrument or teacher. Supplemental lessons for exam, competition or recital preparation may be arranged. Chamber music coaching is also available for groups. Lessons and coaching can begin at any time in the school year.


Parent/Child Piano lessons

New! Parent/Child Piano lessons are specially designed to help families learn music together, equipping parents to help their children in daily practice and strengthening family bonds by making music a family affair.

All students must have access to an instrument and a place for daily practice and/or study. Practice rooms at the VSO School are available FREE to enrolled students on a first-come-first-served basis. (Please contact us for information on rental instrument providers.)

All private lessons are scheduled at the mutual availability of the teacher and the student through the School’s Registration team.

Lesson Fees: $75 per hour / $56.25 per 45 min / $37.50 per 30 min

Colourstrings Programs

A strong start in music develops invaluable lifelong skills. A variety of educational approaches are offered to fit each child’s unique way of learning and to ignite and nurture the joy found in learning music in the early years.

Colourstrings is an approach that builds strong musical foundations, beginning with a child’s earliest music experiences and taking them all the way through to instrumental study. Classes are progressive, and children are encouraged to attend all 3 terms, starting in September.

Children who have completed Colourstrings Music and Movement classes may begin violin lessons using the Colourstrings Approach, in which a unique colour-coded system of notation simplifies learning to read music. For those enrolled in lessons, a FREE Singing Strings Group Class meets once a week. Singing Strings Group Class: Saturdays, 1.45pm–2.30pm. Minimum enrollment required.

Designed for ‘first’ experiences in making music, each class is tailored by age, and develops core music skills through singing, instrument play, dancing, creative movement, listening and socializing in a stimulating yet structured way. Children learn to think musically, sight-sing using solfege (do-re-mi), read & write music, compose, improvise and develop a life-long love of music.

Parents and caregivers must participate in classes for the 3–14mnth, 1–2yrs and 2–3yrs age groups. From 3–4yrs up, children participate in classes independent of parents. Age groups are based on the child’s age in September. Children remain in the same age group for all 3 sessions of the school year.

Colourkeys Piano & Colourrhythm Percussion Lessons

Children who have taken Colourstrings Music and Movement classes can naturally transition to one-to-one instrumental learning in these piano or percussion classes building on the Colourstrings Approach. Instruction includes a 20min private lesson and a 30min lesson in groups of three, to introduce children to one-to-one music tuition.Minimum enrollment required.

The Orff Approach uses forms of everyday activity in a child-centred way of learning that treats music as a basic language. Combining music, movement, drama and speech into lessons that are similar to a child’s world of play, this class encourages improvisational music-making and builds foundational musical skills. Suzuki String Programs & Group Classes (cello and violin)

Based on the concept that children learn to play musical instruments as naturally as they learn to speak, Suzuki programs have flourished worldwide. Parental support is vital to the musical development of Suzuki students. Parents are required to attend classes and lessons, and carry through the learning process in daily practice at home.

Suzuki Violin and Cello Prep Classes

The Suzuki Prep class prepares children to begin Suzuki string lessons on cello or violin, through exercises in rhythm, singing, and in learning to hold the instruments correctly. Minimum enrollment required.

This choir for beginning singers develops the amazing instrument each child possesses: their own voice. Individual singing skills, singing within a group and the basic musical skills of pitch, rhythm and expression are taught through musical play, movement and vocal techniques for the young singer. The choir performs regularly in collaboration with other youth choirs in Vancouver.Minimum enrollment required.

In this unique class, some of the world’s great chamber music is tailored to the abilities of beginning instrumental students, who play together in small groups of 3+ players. Making music together is a deeply social activity, teaching collaboration, respect and working together as a team.

Tailored to each student’s level through exceptional repertoire and direction, the string ensembles give young players the valuable experience and joy that comes from playing with others. The Youth String Ensembles have exclusive opportunities to work with the VSO and Maestro Tovey.

NEW! String Ensemble weekend – April 10–12, 2015 (Fri – Sun). Youth String Ensemble members can take part in a special overnight weekend in a superb retreat facility in Chilliwack, to make music and deepen friendships in a fun-filled weekend of rehearsals, classes, games and activities. (Additional charge to attend includes dorm-style accommodation and meals.)

Rosin up your bow and make friendships by making music in these lively new ensembles of adults who love to make music together. Swing into Vancouver’s new ‘happening’ big band, in classic repertoire from Duke Ellington, Count Basie & Benny Carter, to more recent music by composers/arrangers like Thad Jones, Bob Mintzer and Christine Jensen. The group will develop sight-reading, tonal blend, section playing and dynamics, all under the energetic direction of new faculty member, Steve Kaldestad. Maestro Bramwell Tovey and other guest artists will join the band in the end-of-year concert.

Jazz Combos and Jazz Big Band

Instructors: VariousRecommended for: Brass, wind, piano, bass, guitar players, drummers and vocalists age 14yrs+, who are able to read music. Open to all levels, as participants will be placed with others of a similar experience level.Dates and Times: Thursdays, 5.30–7.00pm (8 weeks per term)

Learn to groove with others under the guidance of the acclaimed faculty of the Jazz Department in these groups of 4 or more instrumentalists and vocalists, learning the ’standards’ by the great jazz composers.

With its spirit of camaraderie and many performances including with the VSO, Orpheum Voices is rapidly becoming one of Vancouver’s favourite adult choirs. REGISTRATION

1. Registration for private lessons takes place through the School Registration team only. Registration for group classes may be completed with the Registration team, or online at www.vsoschoolofmusic.ca.

2. Tuition and fees must be paid according to one of the payment options shown overleaf, a minimum of one week before a student may begin instruction or program participation.

3. All students are required to pay a non-refundable registration fee as follows:• Private instrumental instruction and group classes: $55 covers the whole school

year (Sept–Aug) and includes any additional classes• One-day classes and music appreciation classes have no registration fees • Discounted fee of $80 per school year for family registration (2 or more students)

4. Lesson days and times are not held over from year to year, but returning students are given a priority registration period to secure their teacher and time-slot.

LESSON ATTENDANCE

1. Student Absences If a student is aware of an upcoming absence – e.g. vacation – the student should inform the Registrar at the time of registration and, with the Instructor’s permission, the number of lessons can be adjusted at the time of registration only.Once a student has committed to a specific number of lessons, the teacher reserves these times for the student. Students are expected to attend each lesson he/she has reserved with the teacher. Missed lessons by the student will only be made up under


special circumstances, at the discretion of the teacher. Excessive cancellations may jeopardize a student’s privilege to make-up lessons.

2. Instructor Absences Members of the faculty are active performers in the field. From time to time, their performance schedules may necessitate rescheduling a lesson. If an Instructor is absent, every effort will be made to provide a make-up lesson at a time that is suitable to both the student and the Instructor. If the Instructor is unable to make up a lesson, the student will receive a refund, or credit to be applied to future lessons or classes. Refunds/credits for Instructor absences will be issued only upon written notice from the Instructor.

HOLIDAYS AND CLOSURESThe School is closed on all statutory holidays and VSB and CSF Winter and Spring holidays. Please check our online calendar for information on holidays and other important dates. Statutory holidays are taken into account in the number of lessons booked at the time of registration. Lessons will not take place on these dates. Private lessons missed due to a School closure, such as a snow day, will be made up if possible.

CHANGING INSTRUCTORSIt is highly recommended that students do not change instructors during the school year. For changes that occur during the school year, the Registrar must confirm approval before any transfer can be made.

WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDSGroup Classes: If a student needs to withdraw from a group class up to two weeks before it has started, then any fees paid will be transferred to a school credit. No credits will be issued if a student withdraws from a group class less than two weeks before the start date.

Private Lessons: If a student wishes to withdraw from private lessons, one month’s notice to the Instructor is required. The date of notice will be the date the Instructor submits a withdrawal form to the School’s administration. Automatic payment schedules will be suspended only once payment is received for lessons up until the official withdrawal date.

If a student’s behaviour is deemed consistently disruptive to a class, after consultation with the parents, the teacher will have the right to refuse entry to the class.

Drop-off and ParkingThere is a parkade underneath the VSO School, which has three drop-off and pick-up spaces on the P1 level and a limited number of pay parking spots on the P2 level. The entrance to the parkade is directly beneath the large red square window, on Seymour Street. An elevator can then be taken directly up to the School.

In addition, there is a surface parking lot and parkade, directly across the street, as well as parking meters along Seymour Street.



TransitThe VSO School of Music is conveniently located within walking distance from Canada Line, Expo Line and Millennium Line Skytrain Stations. Numerous buses run on Seymour and Granville Streets (4, 7, 10, 16, 17, 50, N9, N10 and N17), making it easy to get to and from the School without needing a car.
