in work or education, this is a nationalscandal. The government and employerscomplain that we cannot afford to keep upwith the costs of Post 16 education, but themoney is there:

l Billions stockpiled in F/HE reserves.

lVice chancellors on 200,000+ and FEPrincipals awarding themselves salaries ofup to 160,000 4 to 5 times higher thanthat of main grade lecturers.

l 500 billion spent on bailing out thebankers.

l 30 billion on wars in Iraq andAfghanistan, 90 billion on renewingTrident.

I would ensure that the union stands up

Whoever wins the next generalelection will not reverse the driveto marketise education. Our pay, jobs and conditions are under

attack, as is our academic freedom. It willbe down to us and our collective strength asa trade union to defend post-16 educationfrom these attacks.

However, saying what we are againstwill not be enough - we will also haveto put forward an educational vision that

ensures future generations enjoy the freeand equal access to education that many ofus have enjoyed.

The business model that has increasinglyshaped education over the last 25 years hasdriven our colleges and universities on adownward spiral:

lOur professionalism and self-esteemhave been eroded.

l The work/life balance is in tatters;stress-related illnesses have soaredthrough increased workloads and bullyingmanagers.

lCompetition between universities/colleges has led to a race to the bottom with

Principals/Vice Chancellors defending thebottom line as the priority.

lOur students face a lifetime of debt andnarrowing educational provision.

The recession has provided employersin both sectors with the excuse to sacklecturers, researchers and academic-relatedstaff and expand failed business-led modelsyet further.

With 1 million 16-24 year olds not

for all its members, placing itself at theforefront of every local and nationalcampaign that defends our pay, jobs, pensions, conditions and organises toreclaim our colleges and universities. Ibelieve we need:

lA national campaign, where possibleorganised jointly with other public sectorunions, to defend jobs and services.

l To campaign for national agreements

in Further and Adult Education to beautomatically implemented.

l Parity of funding for FAE with schools.

    lDemocratisation of university andcollege governance

l Integration of equality issues into thebargaining process locally and nationally, such as encouraging the use of EqualityImpact Assessments.

l To resist the rise of fascism andcampaign against the scapegoating ofminorities.

l To ensure all decisions taken by the

national union are determined, shaped andsupported by the regions and the branches/local associations.

Recent victories at Liverpool Universityand Tower Hamlets show us that takingaction can win. The support for suchcampaigns within the membership of UCUand the wider community has never beengreater. We have the moral high groundin the defence of education and we needa leadership that is not afraid to rise to thechallenges ahead.
