Opening Night Comedy at the J Shawn Pelofsky: The Other Funny GirlThursday, November 3 | 7 pmShawn Pelofsky was born one of ten Jews in Oklahoma. Performing since the age of eight, Shawn decided to pursue a career in comedy. She attended the University of Southern California and received a bachelors degree in theater.

Author Luncheon Ellen Feldman | Next to Love: A Novel Friday, November 4 | 11 amJoin us for lunch with historical novelist Ellen Feldman whose most recent book has received rave reviews. A story of love, war, loss, and the scars they leave, Next to Love follows the lives of three young women and their men during the years of World War II and its aftermath, beginning

with the men going off to war and ending a generation later, when their children are on the cusp of their own adulthood. This novel celebrates the enduring power of love and friendship and illuminates a transformational moment in American history.

Here are the young men who went off to war as G.I. Jews and came home from it as G.I. Joes; the boys who learned to “eat ham for Uncle Sam,” and those who could not bring themselves to; the veterans who, like their African-American counterparts, would no longer accept second-class citizenship in the country they had fought and died for. This is the generation that put an end to restricted neighborhoods, college quotas and “no dogs and Jews allowed” signs.

Ellen Feldman, a 2009 Guggenheim fellow, is the author of Scottsboro, which was shortlisted for the Orange Prize, The Boy Who Loved Anne Frank, and Lucy. She lives in New York City.

Co-sponsored by Brandeis National Committee.

Reservations for this luncheon must be made by October 31.

Around the World DinnerDanyelle Freeman Try This: Traveling the Globe Without Leaving the Table Monday, Nov. 7 | Dinner: 6 pm Lecture: 7 pmThis promises to be a fun and delicious evening as Danyelle Freemen tells us about

adventurous food selections from around the world as we sample a variety of cuisines for a yummy dinner at the J.

You may have a Zagat guide on hand, but you most likely don’t have a cheat sheet to the multicultural playground that is 21st century American food. Try This: Traveling the Globe Without Leaving the Table empowers readers to treat eating out as an adventure, and to discover new foods and favorites. Whether exploring restaurants in your own hometown, in other U.S. cities, or abroad, Try This will become as indispensible as your cell phone, your credit card, and yes, your Zagat guide.

Danyelle Freeman is the founder and editor of restaurantgirl.com, a hip and accessible guide to the hottest restaurants, menus, and chefs around the country. She served as the chief restaurant critic for the New York Daily News for over two years. A guest judge on Iron Chef America, Danyelle will appear as a judge in several episodes of this season’s Top Chef Masters on Bravo and has previously appeared on many shows on Food Network. A graduate of Harvard College, she lives in New York City.

Dinner reservations must be made by October 31.

Women’s Symposium Keynote Speaker | Iris KrasnowThe Secret Lives of Wives: Women Share What It Really Takes To Stay MarriedSunday, Nov. 6 | 8:30 am - 1 pmWe are happy to welcome back popular author and speaker Iris Krasnow, who spoke

at the Jewish Book & Cultural Arts Fair in 2006 about her book I Am My Mother’s Daughter.

For The Secret Lives of Wives, she interviewed more than 200 wives whose marriages have survived 15 to 70 years to discover the secret to staying married. These women form a diverse cast, yet share one significant trait: they all offer bold, sometimes secretive, strategies on how to go the distance “till death do us part.” The Jewish mothers are some of the most irreverent voices.

The Secret Lives of Wives brims with inspiring examples of women who have it both ways: a committed marriage and personal adventures in uncharted territory.

Iris Krasnow is the bestselling author of five books that track the female growth cycle. She has been a guest on Oprah, Good Morning America, the Today Show and CNN.

Sponsored by the Bureau of Jewish Education and the Valley of the Sun JCC in partnership with A Center for Jewish Studies at ASUJewish Studies Department, Brandeis National Committee, Hadassah Valley of the Sun, National Council of Jewish Women, and Women’s Philanthropy of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix.Join us for a morning filled with various topics and speakers.

Politics & IsraelMitchell Bard The Arab Lobby: The Invisible Alliance That Undermines America’s Interests in the Middle EastWednesday, November 9 | 7 pm This is the first book to challenge the idea that an all-powerful Israeli lobby controls U.S. Middle

East policy and demonstrates that a countervailing Arab lobby exists and is actually more powerful. It is the story of the invisible alliance of State Department Arabists, defense contractors, former government officials, corporations with business interests in the Middle East, non-governmental organizations, academics, non-evangelical Christians, foreign leaders and diplomats working to undermine U.S.-Israel ties while supporting regimes whose values and interests are inconsistent with those of America. The Arab Lobby argues that the U.S. must capitulate to Arab demands or relations with Middle East nations would suffer. Too often this has led Americans to support autocratic governments that abuse human rights and act contrary to American values. Documenting 70 years of complicity at the highest levels of government and corporate America, The Arab Lobby shows us the malevolent forces at work and challenges us to shake off long-standing, toxic alliances and cement ties with countries that share our values and interests.

Mitchell Bard is an authority on U.S.-Israel relations and is Executive Director of the American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise (AICE). He has written or edited more than twenty books. He has a doctorate from UCLA, with a specialty in American politics and international relations. This event is made possible through funding by the Ted Barkin Family Endowment Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation and the Israel Center.

Girls Night Out: Margaritas, Munchies & Mystery! Karen Bergreen Following Polly: A NovelThursday, November 10 | 7 pmA fun change to Girls Night Out, this year

we invite you to Margaritas, Munchies & Mystery with Harvard-educated lawyer-turned-comedian-turned novelist Karen Bergreen.

In Following Polly, Alice Teakle has all of the ingredients of a winner: a Harvard education, a rich Manhattan upbringing, a best friend who’s a lawyer, and a good sense of humor; however because of her tragic past, she’s, well, a bit of a loser. But she’s a loser with promise. She decides to follow—some would even say stalk—her hugely successful but horribly entitled blond former Harvard dorm mate, Polly Dawson, to learn how to be a winner. Unfortunately for both Polly and Alice, Polly ends up dead and Alice is accused of the murder. The rest of the story is the story of Alice’s self-actualization.

Bergreen uses her fierce intelligence and sharp wit to create an entertaining social satire (and mystery) in Following Polly.

Karen Bergreen is the author of Following Polly, which Publisher’s Weekly says “combines edgy thrills with a wicked sense of humor.” She’s also a comedian and has appeared on Comedy Central and Law & Order. She was previously an attorney who clerked for a federal judge. She lives in New York City with her husband and kids.

Community Read & Coffee TalkSharon Pomerantz Rich BoyFriday, November 11 | 11 amJoin the book discussion with the author and enjoy coffee and snacks.

Winner of the National Jewish Book Award for Outstanding Debut Fiction, Rich Boy traces Robert Vishniak,

the favored son of Oxford Circle, a working-class Jewish neighborhood in 1970s Philadelphia. Handsome and clever, Robert glides into the cloistered universities of New England, where scions of unimaginable wealth and influence stand shoulder to shoulder with scholarship paupers like himself who washes dishes for book money. The doors that open there lead Robert to the highest circles of Manhattan society during the heart of the Reagan boom where everything Robert has learned about women, through seduction and heartbreak, pays off. For a brief moment he has it all—but the world in which he finds himself is not the world from which he comes, and a chance encounter with a beautiful girl from the old neighborhood—and the forgotten life she reawakens—threatens to unravel his carefully constructed new identity.

Sharon Pomerantz is a graduate of the University of Michigan’s M.F.A. program. Her short story Ghost Knife was included in The Best American Short Stories 2003, and Shoes was nationally broadcast on NPR’s Selected Shorts. A four-time recipient of the Hopwood Award, she currently teaches writing at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Rich Boy is her first novel.

SAVE THE DATE Tom Fields-MeyerFollowing Ezra: What One Father Learned About Gumby, Otters, Autism and Love from His Extraordinary Son Sunday, January 15, 2012 | 1:30 pmWhen Tom Fields-Meyer’s son Ezra was three and showing early signs of autism, a therapist suggested that the father needed to grieve.

“For what?,” he asked. The answer: “For the child he didn’t turn out to be.”

That moment helped strengthen the author’s resolve to do just the opposite; to pour love onto the child Ezra was becoming, a quirky boy possessing a fascinating and complex mind. Full of tender moments and unexpected humor, Following Ezra is the story of a father and son on a ten-year journey, from Ezra’s diagnosis to the day of his one-of-a-kind bar mitzvah. It celebrates Ezra’s evolution from a remote toddler to an extraordinary young man, connected in his own remarkable ways to the world around him.

Tom Fields-Meyer is an author and journalist. A former senior writer for People, he has written for dozens of publications including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Forward. A native of Portland, Oregon and graduate of Harvard, he lives in Los Angeles with his wife—a rabbi—and their three sons.
