The New Era: Humanity Comes of Age Wednesday, November 2 | 7 pmTemple Chai | 4656 E. Marilyn RoadRabbi Dr. Irving “Yitz” Greenberg is the most influential American Jewish thinker of the past half century. In 1974, Rabbi Greenberg founded

CLAL - then National Center for Leadership and Learning, a pioneering pluralistic program that has trained and educated a generation of lay-leaders and rabbis. Rabbi Greenberg was central to the establishment of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and served as its Chairman from 2000 - 2002. From 1997 - 2007, he served as the President of Jewish Life Network/Steinhardt Foundation and developed Birthright Israel, the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE), Makor and the Jewish Early Childhood Education Initiative (JECEI). Rabbi Greenberg is the author of The Jewish Way: Living the Holidays and numerous other books and articles and is currently completing work on a new book to be published in 2012. Opening Night Comedy at the J Shawn Pelofsky: The Other Funny GirlThursday, November 3 | 7 pmShawn Pelofsky was born one of ten Jews in Oklahoma. Performing since the age of eight, Shawn decided to pursue a career in comedy. She attended the University of Southern California and received a bachelors degree in theater.

During her time at USC, she joined an improvisational group “Comedius Interruptus” which became a motivating force to train at The Groundlings.

At the young age of 20, Shawn was performing sketches and improv with people like (SNL’s) Will Ferrell and Will Forte. With a couple years of improv and sketch under her belt, Shawn became a member of the ACME Comedy Theater. During her three years of sketch comedy, she entertained audiences with people such as Alex Borestein (Mad TV) and Dan Bucatinsky (All Over the Guy). During her time at ACME, Shawn dabbled in the field of stand up comedy and is now a regular at the World Famous Comedy Store and performs there every weekend in the Main Room. She has been featured in the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival and in Comedy Central’s Laugh Riots. She has opened up for greats such as Richard Lewis, Chris Rock, Bill Maher and Huey Lewis and the News.

Her television and film credits include Minding the Store (Pauly Shore); Hype; E! comedy segments; FOX interviews and stand up; The Hot Tamales with Eva Longoria; and, Free Enterprise starring William Shatner and Eric McCormack. Since the “powers that be” loved her performance, they have requested that she appear in the upcoming Free Enterprise 2 due out next year.

Author Luncheon Ellen Feldman | Next to Love: A Novel Friday, November 4 | 11 amJoin us for lunch with historical novelist Ellen Feldman whose most recent book has received rave reviews. A story of love, war, loss, and the scars they leave, Next to Love follows the lives of three young women and their men during the years of World War II and its aftermath, beginning

with the men going off to war and ending a generation later, when their children are on the cusp of their own adulthood. This novel celebrates the enduring power of love and friendship and illuminates a transformational moment in American history.

Here are the young men who went off to war as G.I. Jews and came home from it as G.I. Joes; the boys who learned to “eat ham for Uncle Sam,” and those who could not bring themselves to; the veterans who, like their African-American counterparts, would no longer accept second-class citizenship in the country they had fought and died for. This is the generation that put an end to restricted neighborhoods, college quotas and “no dogs and Jews allowed” signs.

Ellen Feldman, a 2009 Guggenheim fellow, is the author of Scottsboro, which was shortlisted for the Orange Prize, The Boy Who Loved Anne Frank, and Lucy. She lives in New York City.

These women form a diverse cast, yet share one significant trait: they all offer bold, sometimes secretive, strategies on how to go the distance “till death do us part.” The Jewish mothers are some of the most irreverent voices.

Politics & IsraelMitchell Bard The Arab Lobby: The Invisible Alliance That Undermines America’s Interests in the Middle EastWednesday, November 9 | 7 pm This is the first book to challenge the idea that an all-powerful Israeli lobby controls U.S. Middle

East policy and demonstrates that a countervailing Arab lobby exists and is actually more powerful. It is the story of the invisible alliance of State Department Arabists, defense contractors, former government officials, corporations with business interests in the Middle East, non-governmental organizations, academics, non-evangelical Christians, foreign leaders and diplomats working to undermine U.S.-Israel ties while supporting regimes whose values and interests are inconsistent with those of America. The Arab Lobby argues that the U.S. must capitulate to Arab demands or relations with Middle East nations would suffer. Too often this has led Americans to support autocratic governments that abuse human rights and act contrary to American values. Documenting 70 years of complicity at the highest levels of government and corporate America, The Arab Lobby shows us the malevolent forces at work and challenges us to shake off long-standing, toxic alliances and cement ties with countries that share our values and interests.

Mitchell Bard is an authority on U.S.-Israel relations and is Executive Director of the American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise (AICE). He has written or edited more than twenty books. we invite you to Margaritas, Munchies & Mystery with Harvard-educated lawyer-turned-comedian-turned novelist Karen Bergreen.

In Following Polly, Alice Teakle has all of the ingredients of a winner: a Harvard education, a rich Manhattan upbringing, a best friend who’s a lawyer, and a good sense of humor; however because of her tragic past, she’s, well, a bit of a loser. But she’s a loser with promise. She decides to follow—some would even say stalk—her hugely successful but horribly entitled blond former Harvard dorm mate, Polly Dawson, to learn how to be a winner. Unfortunately for both Polly and Alice, Polly ends up dead and Alice is accused of the murder. The rest of the story is the story of Alice’s self-actualization.

Bergreen uses her fierce intelligence and sharp wit to create an entertaining social satire (and mystery) in Following Polly.

Karen Bergreen is the author of Following Polly, which Publisher’s Weekly says “combines edgy thrills with a wicked sense of humor.” She’s also a comedian and has appeared on Comedy Central and Law & Order. She was previously an attorney who clerked for a federal judge. She lives in New York City with her husband and kids.

Her short story Ghost Knife was included in The Best American Short Stories 2003, and Shoes was nationally broadcast on NPR’s Selected Shorts. A four-time recipient of the Hopwood Award, she currently teaches writing at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Rich Boy is her first novel.

Mitzvah Day. By 2010, this had grown into Big Sunday, an incorporated nonprofit with more than 50,000 participants of all ages and backgrounds working together at more than 500 different sites in more than 100 cities throughout southern California, as well as a full, year-round calendar of countless ways for people to get involved. The idea is that EVERYONE has some way they can help somebody else.

David Levinson has written for movies, television, theatre, advertising and theme parks. He started Big Sunday in 1999. In 2009 he was named Best Nonprofit Leader in California. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and three children.

Taste of Activism is a program generously funded by the Panim Institute of BBYO. This program will honor our local teen heroes in the Phoenix Jewish community who are actively making a difference in the lives of others. Each participating organization including BBYO, B’nai Tzedek, Friendship Circle, and Hebrew High will be nominating a teen hero to be recognized on Monday evening, February 13th. Each selected hero will have the opportunity to share what inspires and motivates them to do good in the community and the world at large.
