A Long Walk to WaterBefore Reading Task:   Building Background Knowledge~ The more background knowledge we have about a topic, the more easily we are able to comprehend a text based on that subject.  Before you start reading A Long Walk for Water, click on the link below and print a Cool Country Report.  Complete this Cool Country Report on Sudan.  You might find it interesting to know that as of July 2011, South Sudan became an independent nation.  It is about the size of Texas.  There are very few sources that reflect this change.  You may create your Cool Country Report on either Sudan or on the new country South Sudan.  Below the link for the Cool Country Report, I have included some links for information on South Sudan and Sudan. The Liberation of Gabriel KingBefore Reading Task:Believe it or not, the 1970s were not that long ago.  Find someone who remembers the 1970s and talk to them.  Create 10 questions based on US leaders, music, fashion, technology, politics, and sports.  Interview someone who remembers the 1970s and have them answer your questions.  Bring the questions and their responses to school with you.   If you can't find someone to interview, write the 10 questions and complete research to find the answers.   During Reading Task: As you read, annotate in your book.  You are not looking for specific literary devices, but you are marking parts of the text that help you to understand what you are reading.  These may include connections that you make (text to self), important events in the plot, important pieces of dialogue, important descriptions of the setting, and anything else that helps you to understand and remember the story.    When you come to your first Language A class, make sure you bring both books and all of your work.  We will be using this work as we get to know each other, establish

our classroom procedures, and review language arts objectives.
