During National Volunteer Week, St. Demetrius
Development Corporation welcomed over 90 of its
volunteers to an evening of appreciation and recogni-
tion, socialization and a delicious dinner served by our
management staff. Volunteers are the most important
resource community organizations have. The ability of
people to work willingly together for the betterment
of our seniors is valuable. In 2012, we welcomed 79
new on-going volunteers and increased the number of
volunteer hours 35% over 2011. In addition, we had
Mary Semanyshyn, 2012 Volunteer of the Year for St. Demetrius Development Cor-
poration, with (l to r) son-in-law Richard Rak, daughter Mary N. Semanyshyn, and
Alex Daschko, President, St. Demetrius Development Corporation
Mary Kuschnir, Circle of Excellence Award winner for 2012 with Jim Cardinal of Car-
dinal Funeral Homes, sponsor of the evening.
Roy Kostuk proudly stands in front of the wall me-
morializing his parents, prominent lawyer, Roy Sr. and Irene,
a pharmacist and homemaker. The Kostuks were socially
conscious individuals, great volunteers and highly involved
supporters of the Ukrainian community. Both Irene and
Roy were active members of the Ukrainian Troubadours
and Irene continued playing her violin for our residents
right up to her passing. We greatly appreciate Irene’s gen-
erous gift of $50,000 to the Care Centre.

My Personal Journey of Caring for a Loved One and Sustainability of Seniors Care
Last month, former Presi-
dent, Victor Lishchyna welcomed
over 30 guests, including many
lawyers and financial advisors, and
introduced the very accomplished
Justice Lydia Olah, Superior Court
of Justice and keen community
supporter. Justice Olah shared her
family’s experience of many years
of caring for and finding the need-
ed healthcare for their beloved
mother, Pauline Barchynsky. The
three daughters, Oksana Wells, Ula-
na Barchynsky and Lydia, took their
roles and did what was necessary
to ensure their mother’s care, safety
and well-being and honored their
mother’s wish to be a resident at the
Care Centre. Though it took many
months for desired accommodation
to become available, and then sev-
eral weeks for Pauline to adjust to
her new surroundings, the Barchyn-
sky daughters, extended family and
Pauline are very pleased and grate-
ful for the Care Centre. Following
an interesting story of her mother’s
life and her quirky sense of humour
and health challenges, Judge Olah
shared her heartfelt feelings about
the importance of supporting the
Care Centre.
“Seniors make up the fast-
est-growing age group in Canada
and this will continue due to an
increase in life expectancy and the
aging of the baby boomer genera-
tion. The government is not going
to build any more long-term care
beds though they estimate the de-
mand for these beds will continue
for the next 40 years. Their focus
and funding for long-term care has
moved to helping seniors stay in
their homes longer, with commu-
nity based supports assisting with
daily living and some medical con-
ditions. That strategy may work for
many seniors and their families, but
not for all.
As seniors continue to re-
main in their homes longer, they
arrive with more advanced medi-
cal conditions and cognitive chal-
lenges, such as dementia and Al-
zheimer’s. The gap in government
funding and the costs of operating
homes of the quality and caliber en-
joyed here at the Care Centre will in-
creasingly need to be filled by fund-
raising dollars. The alternative is to
provide only basic care to seniors in
a minimally maintained facility, but
that is not who the Care Centre is.
We know that our community
wants a Ukrainian focused enriched
facility to house our most needi-
est and vulnerable seniors, as wit-
nessed by our waitlist of 172. We as
a community are proud of the high
standards, delivery of services and
exemplary reputation of the Ukrai-
nian Canadian Care Centre. As a
highly regulated industry, each new
government mandate requires dol-
lars to comply and the Care Centre
is continually challenged to fund
the necessary upgrades as are other
homes; be it a new generator, a new
reporting system or for normal ag-
ing and wear and tear on the build-
ing itself, such as roof repairs. All
these things cost money.
The 2006 Canadian Inheri-
tance Study by Decima Research
estimated that Boomers stand to in-
herit approximately $1 trillion over
the next 20 years. Given the econo-
my of the past 5 years, perhaps this
number is a bit high, however we
know that a very significant transfer
of wealth will take place.
A bequest is an ideal vehicle
to accomplish a charitable gift, to
make a lasting and meaningful con-
tribution to a cherished and neces-
sary organization such as the Care
Centre. I encourage you to take a
few minutes to consider how you
can make a difference in the ongo-
ing needs of the Care Centre, be
it through a personal donation or
holding a conversation with a friend
or client who is thinking about their
legacy.” – edited from remarks of
May 15, 2013.

Mary Semanyshyn, Volunteer of
the Year Award
After Mary’s husband passed
away in 2008, Mary found it difficult
to participate in life. Her daughter
and good friend Elsie encouraged
her to consider volunteering at the
Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre.
She hesitated and declined several
times until one day she was asked to
visit the Care Centre to provide her
thoughts and opinions on an initia-
tive the Care Centre was about to
undertake. This was the beginning
of her journey as a volunteer. After
the first visit she was hooked. She
immediately applied to be a volun-
teer assisting with smaller activities
such as the newsletter mailing. A
few months later she was asked to
assist with the gift shop, organize
the library, bake cakes for the Ba-
zaar, assist with special events and
help out with the weekly Tuesday
Bingo program. Mary never says no
and always goes above and beyond
her call of duty, without asking for
anything in return. She contributes
her time whole heartily, always with
a warm happy smile.
Mary Kuschnir, Ciricle of Excel-
lence Award
For Mary, the Care Centre is
even more than a care home that
provides her mother with the best
care 24 hours a day. It is a com-
munity of staff, volunteers, family
members and residents. Mary saw
family members working together
to provide support, share experi-
ences and seek solutions to com-
mon problems and she joined the
Family Council Executive in 2005
and was voted in as Chair in 2007.
Under Mary’s visionary leadership
and outstanding commitment,
the Family Council Executive have
planned and presented a vast num-
ber of educational sessions with Dr.
Peter Derkach, organized an annual
Family Day Event in the season of
thanksgiving, held a number of in-
formational meetings to assist new
family members to meet and get to
know the Care Centre’s Directors
and Managers, and is now working
on a cook book of Our Mothers Best
Recipes, which will include many
of our resident’s recipes. Over the
past eight years Mary has come to
appreciate the Care Centre’s volun-
teers more and more; they provide
both the residents and their fami-
lies with an enriched living environ-
ment that otherwise wouldn’t be
possible. She is pleased to add her
skills and talents to the team. The
Circle of Excellence Award is given
on behalf of the Ontario Long-Term
Care Association to a volunteer who
has provided outstanding support
and services.

Horodynsky Farm Outing
Residents of the Care Centre were graciously invited by Borys
Horodynsky, an inventor and farmer who grows onions on his beautiful
acreage in the lush Holland Marsh, to join other seniors and guests for a
special day at his home. After the outdoor mass, guests were treated to a
delicious BBQ and entertainment, including children dancing, a marching
band and singing. An excellent time was had by all who attended and we
thank Mr. Horodynsky for inviting us back for 2014. We know the seats on
the bus for next year will be at a premium.

Gift Shop
To ensure safety of our residents at the Care Centre, we are re-
quired to replace bed covers every 5 years as mandated by the 2007 Long-
term Care Homes Act, due to flame retardant expiration. These gently
used, colourful comforters were donated to a very grateful charity, Good
Shepherd Ministries, which provides basic necessities of food and shelter
to homeless individuals in Toronto.
