Welcome New Residents

Judy Burian was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, an only child. She attended Iowa State College two years before she married Richard Burian, a mechanical

engineer employed at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio.Richard and Judy had six children, four sons and two daughters. When

all of the children were in school, Judy enrolled at The Ohio State University earning a BS/MS in Family Relations and Human Development and a MS in Public Administration. Judy worked as an Analyst in Management Planning and Research Section of the Industrial Commission of Ohio.

Richard transferred to a Battelle research project at the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas, studying safety issues in dismantling the bombs they had previously

built. The Burians moved to Amarillo in 1992. Richard retired at 65 and passed away in 2015.

Dennis, the eldest son and his wife Deborah live in Oklahoma City, so the two of them and Judy decided it would be better if they lived closer together. Dennis and

Deborah had told Judy about Spanish Cove, so Judy listed her home for sale and the rest is history.

Judy and Richard were avid square dancers. She has always been an enthusiastic gardener and landscaper. She had a large home, a big yard with decorative plants and

beautiful trees. Judy loves to sew, knit, embroider, and is hoping to learn to crochet when she gets settled in to her apartment in 1503 Cornwell. She says the activities at Spanish

Cove sound very inviting and she is looking forward to meeting new friends. Welcome to Spanish Cove, Judy!

Wanda Beaman was born on a family farm between Loyal and Dover, Oklahoma. She’s the oldest of six children and when she was 5 years old her family moved to San Diego,

California. Within two years her family moved to Newton, Kansas. Wanda’s family returned to Dover, OK in 1946, where she attended school and graduated in 1953. The next year Wanda married Nathan Beaman and they were married 57 years when he passed away after a 16 year battle with cancer. They were blessed with 3 children, a boy and two girls, Curtis, Rhonda and Theresa. Wanda has 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and they all live within a 30 mile radius of Yukon. Wanda’s family moved to Yukon in 1966 and the children and grandchildren have attended Yukon Schools.

Seagate Disk Drive is where Wanda and her husband were employed for over 30 years each. During that time it was many different companies, General Electric and Honeywell, among others. She is very involved in Town and Country Christian Church and considers it her extended family.

Wanda is a retired board member of WEOKIE and has held many positions within that board for the last 30 years. She is currently serving as the WEOKIE Foundation Board Member. She is also a Compassionate Hands Board Member and feels very strongly about the wonderful ministry it provides to the Yukon community.

Wanda is so well connected in the Yukon community and has heard so many great stories about Spanish Cove that she is looking forward to this new chapter in her life. Wanda and her Yorkie, Mia, will be seeing everyone in July! Welcome to Spanish Cove, Wanda!

All of us know at least one person whose views strongly lean toward what is wrong about

things rather than what is right. We label them as negative, unhappy people and do our best to avoid them lest they turn their focus on us. Their views are often distorted and their words are like poison. Facts mean nothing unless they can be twisted to support a condemning point of view.

While pessimism plays an important role in our development as human beings, too much of it can

be unhealthy. We are already less than perfect but when we mask our own imperfection by making the world around us less perfect, we are only hurting ourselves and others. Moreover, to be overtly negative can make you miss opportunities to enjoy three of the best attributes of life: faith, hope and love.

Truly there is a balance between optimism and pessimism. We need both in our lives. One gives us something to look forward to. The other helps identify problems or wrongs needing correction. Yet, if everything is wrong, then your life needs rebalancing.

Negativity infects us faster than any known contagious disease. It can spread quickly from person to person. When you are the recipient, it can shake your confidence or ruin your day. When you’ve been bitten by it, there is a good chance you’ll bite another.

When people around you are negative, the easy road is to be critical too. It is tempting to join in and criticize because we want to fit in. Yet, it is by far better to stand on your virtues and look for something good. If you want to light up a room when you walk into it, just start dishing out your goodness and watch what happens.

Surely, one of the great temptations of later life is to take a bite out of someone by using harsh words. While growing old may give you more boldness to be rude, it doesn’t make it right.

You teach people how to treat you with your words and actions. Moreover, only hurtful lessons, not wisdom, gets passed along when you put someone down or harshly correct them.

Your wisdom is by far the greatest gift you can give to someone. While we may learn from negative experiences, the best lessons learned in life are those delivered with love. The best transportation to pass along your wisdom is your goodness.

Be great today. Better yet, be good!Sincerely,Don

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Page 6: Volume No. 207 / July 2013

Welcome New Residents

Kay Johnson was born in Marlow, Oklahoma and has spent most of her life there but soon will be joining us at Spanish Cove. Kay’s family owned and had living quarters

in the local funeral home. She grew up in Marlow, graduated high school there and went on to finish her college degree in Elementary Education and Family Relations & Child Development at Central State College, now University of Central Oklahoma. She moved back to Marlow, took over ownership of the funeral home, has recently retired and sold the business. She is looking forward to making friends in the family-like atmosphere of the Cove.

Kay has one sister living in Washington D.C. and three daughters, one in Oakland, California, one in Nashville, Tennessee and one in Duncan, Oklahoma. Kay enjoys

cooking, reading and being with people. She enjoys helping with OKC Food Bank activities. She works with small groups in bible studies at First Baptist Church and hopes to continue that work in Yukon. She is interested in wellness activities and has been

driving to OKC to buy groceries at the great health food stores in the area. She is looking forward to being closer when she moves here.

Kay already knew about Spanish Cove as she visited relatives, Carolyn and Merle Collins and Betty Ratliff and witnessed the excellent facilities and the genuine care they received

while living at the Cove. Kay wants to be a part of group activities, so we are looking forward to meeting her. Welcome to Spanish Cove, Kay!

Ron & Shirley Beckett will be moving to 17 Janice #102. Ron is an “Okie” native having graduated from Putnam City H.S. original in 1954 where he was honored to be captain of

the wrestling team. He worked in the family business fifty years and was 1/3 owner of Beckett Bros. Wood Floor Company. He lost his first wife to cancer then took up ballroom dancing where he met Shirley. He has three children, one living in the OKC area.

Shirley grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin and naturally her family of five children are avid Packer fans. After moving to Oklahoma in 1963 with five small children she continued her college work at SWOSU in Weatherford. Four of her five kids graduated from OSU and one from OU. She has 12 grandchildren and 2 greats.

Shirley and Ron are currently celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary. Shirley loves to draw and paint while Ron has done woodworking for a hobby recently.

The Beckett’s have been longtime members of Church of the Servant, where Shirley sings in the choir. Ron and Shirley are looking forward to becoming part of the Cove community and we are very happy to have them. Welcome to Spanish Cove, Ron & Shirley!

Jacqueline Drum will soon be moving to Spanish Cove so she can be close to her only son, while being able to enjoy a full quality of life. Having lived in California most of her life, she graduated

from San Jose State University in 1958, after which she taught elementary school for 14 years. After getting married, she then turned her energies to charity work, which included being Treasurer for the Oakland Symphony Guild and Treasurer for San Antonio Boy’s Club of Oakland. She then began a second career as a real estate agent. In her 20 years of selling properties, she achieved numerous sales awards. She semi-retired in 1999, and moved to an over 55 country club in the Palm Springs area, where she continued working in real estate another 5 years.

Jackie enjoys golf, bridge, all card games, the theatre, art, and music. She is a voracious reader and enjoy crossword and Sudoku puzzles. Her favorite teams are the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers and pretty much any NFL team.

We think Jackie will fit perfectly in the Spanish Cove Community and we are very excited to meet her. Welcome to Spanish Cove, Jackie!

Life The Way You Want It

Spanish Cove residents made Oklahoma history as the first ever Senior Dragon Boat team paddling team on the Oklahoma River back in

2012. This Spring there were four Senior paddling teams, not including Spanish Cove. A dragon boat paddling team is made up of 10 or 20 people (depending on the size of the boat) who paddle to the beat of a drummer at the bow, while a steerperson, at the stern, steers the boat.

Dragon boat paddling can be purely recreational or a highly competitive sport. Dragon Boat paddling is a complete and total body workout. Paddlers work out their arms and shoulders, however, successful paddlers use their core, which provides leverage and reduces stress on the arms. Paddlers also use their legs to create a stronger stroke. Paddlers get that workout during practices, which generally take place once a week for a 10 week season; during those hour to hour and half long practices, teams work on stroke technique, do a variety of drills, and practice for upcoming races.

The OG&E Night Sprints Regatta Festival is this September 29 & 30. Our Fall Dragon Boat paddling team is preparing for the Regatta by mastering techniques, working together as a team and having more fun than you can imagine. Ask a full boat of 20 paddlers why they like the sport, and you’ll likely get 20 different answers. Cove residents are invited to ride with us to a practice on Tuesday’s at 7:15 a.m. and watch or walk around.

As the book of Ecclesiastes and the Byrd’s song says, “In everything, there is a season.” So goes it here at Spanish Cove. We have seen some changes recently

in the events and happenings — some regular traditions have been let go so that new ones can begin.

The annual cookouts for Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day have ended so a new cookout can take place. This year, we will host a giant cookout on September 14th to celebrate the Cove’s birthday. Everyone from residents and staff to staff families will be invited. It will be a fun outdoor event for all.

The luau has been an annual event around here for more than 25 years. And although we all enjoyed it, times are a changin’, making room for the Watermelon Fest on August 25th.

We have also added new classes to the routine: Toning & Movement will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30 pm, and Saturday at 10:00 am. A beginner’s class for Tai Chi will be starting in August, meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:00 pm.

While we all feel comfortable when things are the same, some change can do us good. Just make sure you don’t change from the wonderful you that you are.
