We are very close to having the funding needed to break ground this fall on the Dining Hall kitchen renovation and the much needed redo of the Palace bathhouse. We must raise another $240,000 by June 2016 in order to proceed with groundbreaking. The campaign continues beyond that goal as we work to build the endowment to assure Camp’s future. We have made tremendous progress in this campaign with more than $1,360,000 received in gifts and pledged support for the Dining Hall/Palace. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this campaign. Your generosity is amazing! If you haven’t made your gift, now is when it really matters. President’s Message ~ Lucy Bahn Spring has arrived early and brings with it a heightened anticipation of summer camp. Enrollment for the summer programs at Camp Olson YMCA is already above prior year enrollments. The Camp Olson specialty programs promise even more adventure, leadership training, and friendship building. It has been impressive to witness the enthusiastic embrace by our camp direc-tor and our staff in all things Camp Olson, and their preparation for expanded leadership training and wilderness tripping programs, based on continued cul-tivation of inclusivity, acceptance, and harmony. I thank the members of the Board for their energy and commitment. A spe-cial thanks to departing Board member, Lee Rieth, and a warm welcome to new Board member, Michael Collins.

We are tremendously excited to be approaching our ground breaking goal for the 3(60) Campaign. This is the year that the much needed updates to our facilities will start to be realized. Campers, friends, and families have given their help to position Camp Olson for a strategic roadmap that will lay the foundation for the next sixty years. There are few things more rewarding than being part of a fam-ily that is building dreams for future youth and leaders in our community. The annual Memorial Day work weekend is also coming up. Join us as we prepare camp for another summer of maximum capacity. It takes a lot of effort to keep the cabins and grounds well maintained so the wild can stay wild. Family camp is one of the unique ways to introduce families to the north woods experience. Late summer at Camp Olson is a time of peace and reflection as well. Consider signing up for a cabin and the staff will provide a safe environment to explore and connect.

This is a time of wonderful anticipation.

Meet Our Newly

Elected Board MemberMichael Collins – Winnetka, IL - I got quite home-sick my first year at Camp Olson in 1984, while on a trip on the Little Fork River, but I also fell in love with the outdoors, the adventure, the activities, and the camaraderie. For three years as a camper, and 2 years on staff, I felt like I truly belonged, and was able to be the per-son I wanted to be. I was sad to move on to other summer jobs after graduating from high school. I was always jealous of the kids who had been coming to Family Camp for so many years, so I was thrilled to be able to share the experience with my children starting in 2011. It has been wonder-ful to be a part of the community once again. My daughter has been going to kids’ camp for several years, and loves it as much as I did. Those weeks, we took her younger brother to the Boundary Wa-ters Canoe Area; he’s just coming up on his first year of traditional camp. They are both so proud to wear their tie-dyed Camp Olson shirts to school at the end of the summer. We live in a northern suburb of Chicago, where I am a stay-at-home dad. I have bachelor’s degrees in astrophysics and mathematics, and a master’s degree in educational psychology. It has been a labor of love to create new maps for camp, and invest in the future of the nature program through supporting orienteering activities.

A Message from our Camp Director – Lindsey Abrahams

The past six months have been thrilling as I have been able to settle into my new role here as the Camp Director. It has been rewarding in so many ways that I cannot even begin to express. However, it is easy to pick out which part has been my favorite. I have loved having the opportunity to get to know the 2015 and soon to be 2016, staff!

Through staff retreat, long interviews and other spur of the moment camp gatherings, I have had the pleasure of hearing about all of their camp stories.

It’s has been easy to connect with each member of the staff because we all have one very important thing in common, camp! Talking to these folks it has become clearer that there is no end to the affect that camp can have

on an individual and there are a million different ways folks have found their way to this north wood’s paradise.

Among our staff many have been coming for years but some are fairly new to our beloved home away from home. It has been fun to get to know the campers I remember from years ago as adults and to hear about the knowledge and experiences they have gained while working at camp. It has been equally fun to get to know some folks for the fi rst time and see the energy and enthusiasm that camp has inspired in them in a short time.

The staff’s passion and enthusiasm for camp is con-tagious. It has been so heart warming to receive the warm welcome they have given me. I am elated to be able to spend this summer getting to know them better and bare witness to the amazing work they will do with campers and families this summer.

What’s New at Camp Olson This Summer?

Key Log Rolling! The Key Log is the new alternative to the traditional cedar wood log used to log roll. Anyone who has been to Camp Olson’s beach has enjoyed themselves playing on our cedar log. Maybe they’ve even stood on it for a few delicately balanced seconds. The benefi t of the key log is that it is light weight, easy to move and it comes with train-ing wheels. The training wheels help to slow the log down so that the folks on board can learn the feel for log rolling. This summer we hope that our campers can learn this deli-cate sport and perhaps even graduate to be able to log roll on our original cedar log. Each summer we work hard to ensure we have the best management team possible. These folks work closely together and with our Camp Director to make the summer the most it can be for all of our campers and staff. They manage schedules, cure camper home sickness and staff stress, comfort parents, and so much more. These are the staff who have put their time in as counselors and program staff and truly know the inner workings of camp. When it comes to camp, they make the world go round.

2016 Summer Management Team

Assistant Camp Director - Kristin Jonason

Kristin will be returning this summer as the Assistant Camp Director. Kristin, a five year staff member graduated in May of 2014 with a degree in Psychology from DePauw University. She is currently employed as a Marketing Coordinator for a software firm in Indianapolis. Kristin will be working closely with our CIT and LIT leaders to ensure that our campers are having the best experience possible. Her experience as a LIT and CIT leader along with her passion for developing future leaders will go far to benefit our programs.

Program Director - James Scudamore

James will be returning for his 3rd summer as our Program Director and his seventh summer on staff. James recently graduated with his degree in Environmental and Outdoor Education from the University of Minnesota Duluth. James started his career here at Camp Olson in 2010. After camp he hopes to pursue a year round career in camping or other outdoor pro-grams. In his time at camp he has played an integral role in our Nature Program and has helped turn it into the program it is today. We know he will work tirelessly this summer to ensure that all of our Programs are running in top form.

Female Counselor Coordinator – Marge Pearson

Marge will be returning for her second summer as the Female Counselor Coordinator and her 6th summer on staff. She has been inspiring camp-ers as a counselor, CIT Leader and more in her time at camp. Marge will be joining us as a recent graduate from Colorado College with her degree in Political Science. In her time here she has shown great dedication to the mission of Camp Olson and goes above and beyond to make sure each camper is having the experience of a lifetime.

Male Counselor Coordinator - Phillip Timmons

Phillip will be returning for his 2nd summer as our Male Counselor Coordi-nator and his 6th summer on staff. In his time at Camp Olson Phillip has worked as a CIT Leader, Target Sports Director, Counselor, and anywhere we needed him. His ability to establish connections to both campers and staff alike have helped him to excel in this role. Phil has just graduated from Beloit College with his degree in Mathematics and Studio Art. We are thrilled to have Phillip returning in this essential role.

Counselors in Training - Class of 2016 The Camp Olson Counselor in Training program is the transitioning step for those who aspire to work at camp in the future and for those who are looking for a challenging and life-changing opportu-nity. Camp Olson CIT’s undergo an experience like no other. Over the course of four weeks, they will gain leadership skills, trek for a week along the Superior Hiking Trail, and forge lifelong bonds with their fellow participants. The program provides great life experience and is a great primer to future employment at Camp Olson. Through hands-on experience, thoughtful discussion, and feedback from their leaders all participants are able to turn inward and discover the great power they hold within themselves. It is a life-changing journey! Would you like to see your name on this list? If you are 16 by this summer you still can. As of March 1 we have two openings in CIT-1234 from June 12-July 9, all other sessions have a wait list.

World Water Monitoring Challenge™ (WWMC) is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of their local waterbodies. WWMC grew out of the World Water Monitoring Day program in 2012. While an offi cial “day” continues to be observed each year on September 18, the broader “challenge” encourages peo-ple everywhere to test the quality of their waterways, share their fi ndings, and protect our most precious resource. The program runs annually from March 22 (the United Nations World Water Day) until December 31. The primary goal of World Water Monitoring Challenge is to educate and engage citizens in the protection of the world’s water resources. Many people are unaware of the impact their behav-iors have on water quality. Conducting simple monitoring tests teaches participants about some of the most common indicators of water health and encourages further participation in more formal citizen monitoring efforts.A selected group of Leadership-in-Training campers this summer will participate in process of water sampling and data submission.

2016 Camp Olson YMCA Leaders

Chris Butler – Hometown: Rochester, MN ~ Chris is a sophomore at the University of Minnesota in Duluth where he is majoring in Social Studies Education. This summer will be Chris’s fourth summer on staff. In his time on staff he has worked as a Wilderness Skills Instructor, Fishing Director, LIT Leader and more. In 2016 he will be spending the first half of the sum-mer as the Target Sports Director and the second half as a CIT Leader. We know he will inspire his CITs with his passion for camp.

Sarah Fudge – Hometown: Springfield, MO ~ Sarah will be joining us for her 5th summer on staff. Sarah is a Jr. Psychology major at Missouri State. Sarah is truly a jack of all trades at camp and has filled almost every role in some capacity. Her versatility will do wonders to teach this summer’s CITs. In addition to her role as a CIT leader she will be working as an Assistant at the Corral.

Megan Schoephoerster – Hometown: Shakopee, MN ~ Megan is a 5 year staff member at Camp Olson. She will be spending this summer running our Outpost and ensuring that our summer trips are sent out safe and well equipped. In addition to this she will be leading our third session of CITs! Megan is a Jr. at the University of MN in Duluth and is working to become a Physician Assistant. We know with her expertise our CITs will be ready to join the ranks of Camp Olson Staff.

Ben Hayden – Hometown: Breezy Point, MN ~ Ben is a Jr. attending the University of Minnesota Duluth and will be joining us for his fourth summer on the Camp Olson staff. In that time he has helped campers get in touch with their northwoods side as the Leader of the Wilderness Skills program and as one of our lead fisherman. When Ben in not leading CITs this sum-mer he will be guiding a group of LITs to the BWCA and teaching more campers how to fish.

Sam Guida – Hometown: Nisswa, MN ~ Sam is a Jr. attending the Univer-sity of Minnesota Morris as an Environmental Science major. Sam is joining us for his fourth summer on staff. In summers past Sam has worked as the Nature Director, a counselor and much more. This summer in addition to leading the next generation of staff as a CIT Leader he will be running the Nature Program.

Kendal Giacomini – Hometown: Minneapolis, MN ~ Kendal will be return-ing for her 4th summer as a recent graduate from the College of St. Bene-dict in Elementary Education. In addition to her CIT role she will be run-ning the Craft Shop as the Co- Director. We are so excited to see what new innovative projects Kendal will bring to the Craftshop program. There is no doubt that she will provide life lessons and help to influence and teach the next generation of Camp Olson Staff.

A thought from Russ Link, Camp Olson’s Executive Director Being the father of two older teens, both of whom will be working as Assistant Counselors this summer, I understand how connected children are to their devices, and how I, as a parent, have relied upon these devices to stay connected with each of them. However, when my children are being supervised by other responsible adults and institutions I have come to realize that this is the perfect time for them to discon-nect from their parents. My boys have attended camp since they were eight, and like many of you they have development their independence, developed socially and now have lifelong friendships because of camp. I have always taken the safety and well being of our campers, your children, very seriously. After all, giving your children over to the care of other people is perhaps the greatest act of trust you as a parent can engage in. We want to do everything we humanly can to earn and keep that trust. We also know we cannot do this without your help. With more and more children using the internet, smart phones and other technologies at younger ages, we appeal to you as parents to partner with us to ensure that your children continue to have the safest, most wholesome experience with us at camp as possible. As you may know we have a “no-cell-phone” policy at camp. This includes all cell phones, smart phones and tablets. Aside from the fact that these devices are expensive and can get lost or stolen and that the physical camp environment is not kind to such items, there is a fundamental problem with campers hav-ing cell phones at camp, and that is trust. When children come to camp they-and-you are making a leap of faith, temporarily transferring their primary care from you as their parents to their counselors and us. This is one of the growth producing yet challenging aspects of camp. As children learn to trust other car-ing adults, they grow and learn, little by little, to solve some of their own challenges. We believe their emerging independence is one of the greatest benefits of camp. It is one important way your child devel-ops greater resilience. Contacting you by phone essentially means they have not made that transition. It prevents us from getting to problems that may arise and addressing them quickly. Sending a cell phone to camp is like saying to your child that you as a parent haven’t truly come to peace with the notion of them being away from you and in our care. We agree to tell you if your child is experiencing a challenge in their adjustment to camp. You can help by talking to your child before they leave for camp and telling them that there is always someone they can reach out to, whether it is their counselor, activity leader, health care provider or even the camp director. We are all here to help, but if you don’t trust us, your children certainly won’t! Our electronic devices are tools that have their valid use and are here to stay. They allow camp-friends to keep in touch much more easily—and that’s a great thing! But, we will continue to avoid them at camp, to keep the experience pure. In this way, the experi-ence of camp is even more vital and special for youth than ever before as we disconnect to reconnect in the Northwoods.

We encourage letters from home, our email service and we encourage campers to write letters while they are here. During your child’s week at camp we can assure you that a parent or guardian will be contacted if… • Your camper is ill, with a fever over 100 degrees • Your camper needs medical treatment off-site • If there are questions regarding medications or healthcare of your camper • If you camper is having a difficult time adjusting to camp • Your camper is unable to function within the community of Camp Olson in a healthy way All cell phones that are sent with campers will be confiscated and held in the office until the end of the session. CIT and International campers will have ac-cess to cell phones for a brief period during weekend change days. The staff and I will do our best to limit our cell phone use for safety and emergencies purposes only around our campers this summer.

Tips for First Time Campers and Parents Sending kids off to camp for the first time can be scary for campers and parents alike. Campers are nervous about be-ing away from home without their parents for what might be the first time. Parents are worried that their child will be safe, make friends and much more. Even though camp can be a little intimidating there are a lot of ways to help make sure the experience will be a success from the get go. Helping campers to become familiar with camp is a great place to start. Spending time looking at the brochure, check-ing out the website and Facebook page can help acquaint future campers with what camp looks like and the activities that might be offered. It’s important that parents share in the excitement their camper may feel and encourage it. Meeting someone from camp or attending with a friend can also help a first time camper. It can help a great deal to know there will be at least one familiar face once they reach camp. We host camp fairs throughout the state where Lindsey or a member of our staff will be there to great campers and their families. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page to learn when and where. Even helping campers to get engaged with their counselor, a staff member or fellow camper when dropping off at camp or on the bus can be a great way to help the first time camper feel comfortable. This can be as simple as facilitating an introduction and stepping back to watch the magic happen. Letting campers help to pack their own bags can be an ex-citement builder. In addition to building excitement it can also help reduce on lost and found items since campers have a bet-ter idea of what they brought. If some new items are required for camp be sure to involve campers in picking these things out, even if it’s something as simple as their lunch for the bus ride to camp. There are a whole host of reasons a camper might be ner-vous to leave home for a week and head into the unknown. We will always do what we can to ensure this transition is as smooth as possible. Our counselors are highly trained in work-ing with homesickness and helping to unify a group to be sure everyone is making friends and having fun. Rochesterfest 2016 Camp Olson YMCA will be spon-soring a one-mile run in con-junction with the Rochester Fest celebration. The run will take place on Friday June 24, start time around 6:00 P.M. immediately before the Rochester Fest Parade, participants run the parade route. Hormel Challenge Cup

Thank you Hormel Corporate Office for your support for the past 34 years!!! Thanks to the donations of the Hormel Corporate Office North, South and R & D person-nel the YMCA of Austin can help send kids ages 8-13 years old to Camp Olson YMCA with the over $5,620 that was generated from the Hormel Challenge Cup Event this year. The event was held the morning of Saturday, March 5th. The Challenge Cup is a fun and competitive event among the employees. As part of the competition there was a fundraising raffle, 100% of the proceeds raised will go directly to children in need around the Austin area to help offset the cost of attending Camp Olson YMCA. Congratulations to all teams for their superior efforts. For 34 years, Austin native and Austin YMCA employee Ruth Chamberlain has facilitated the Hormel Challenge Cup! Ruth’s husband Ross and her two sons Kyle and Cody are Camp Olson YMCA camper and staff alumni. Memorial Day Work Weekend 2016 Calling All Alumni and Friends!

Your help is most needed and appreciated! Camp Olson would not be ready for summer if it were not for the valuable effort of volunteers willing to assist us in preparing camp for the summer. Come spend the weekend in the Northwoods for some fun, fellowship and most rewarding work. We’ll provide the food, lodg-ing and campfires; you provide the hands and energy. Horseback Riding at Summer Camp

There is no better place to learn how to ride a horse than at camp. Campers can learn in an envi-ronment that is completely free of the judgments and pressure that may exist in a show barn setting. There may be many goals motivating a camper’s decision to join the horse program at Olson but the top two on everybody’s list are, bonding with these beautiful animals and having fun! Campers have the opportunity to get to know the Olson herd by riding many of the horses we have in residence here during the summer. We feel that campers grow more as a rider when they are ex-posed to many different horses. Just like people, each horse comes with their own personality. By the end of the week, each camper is sure to have a favorite that they will get to ride as the group heads out for a meal cooked over the fire in the shurds. Our riding campers love that they get to spend all morning out at the corral. Three full hours dedi-cated to horsemanship is more than many programs are able to offer. In the afternoons riders are able to try all that camp has to offer, but many still choose to come out to the corral even to just be around the horses for more time. Packing for horse camp can be a little daunting. Not only do you need the myriad of things you need for traditional camp but you need all of your riding gear. As we typically ride western at Olson, most campers are comfortable in jeans when they ride. Some riders do prefer breeches as they are lighter weight in the summer heat, these however do not stand up as well against twigs and thorns that might be encountered while out on trail. Cowboy boots or short riding boots are the preferred type of shoe since they have a heel and slip easily out from a stirrup. Any sturdy shoe will do if nec-essary just keep these three things in mind: has a heel, can slip easily from a stirrup and can stand up to a horse hoof stepping on them. Riding is a very physical sport, we recommend that campers come prepared with undergarments they would feel comfortable running in. Some campers choose to bring their own riding helmet but we provide helmets for all of our campers. It has been amazing to see how our riding program has grown in the last decade. Our campers can expect top notch instruction on any level of horse. We are so lucky to have all three of our Corral Di-rectors returning for another summer. With their help we know it will be another safe and successful summer at the corral!

Aliyyah Noel and twin sisters Audrey and Kate Cuthbert are each return-ing for their 5th summer as staff members and their 3rd year as Co-Corral Directors. In that time they have also been counselors and have had an amazing affect on countless riding campers. All three are finishing their Jr. Year of College. Aliyyah is majoring in Biology and Pre-veterinary Sciences at Stanford University. Audrey is an Environmental Studies ma-jor at Lawrence University and Kate is a Wildlife Ecology major at Bates College. All three are former youth campers and Audrey and Kate began attending camp very early in life as family campers. We are thrilled to have all three holding the reins and teaching your children this summer at the corral.
