What is in News?

1) “Future of e-Commerce: Uncovering Innovation”

Encompassing an increasing range of economic activities such as retail, travel, tourism, food

and beverages, e-commerce has emerged as India's new sun-rise industry, set to cross in

business worth $16 billion by the end of 2015, according to an ASSOCHAM- Deloitte joint

study released today.

The ‘Future of e-Commerce: Uncovering Innovation’ study reveals that the digital

commerce market in India has grown steadily from $4.4 billion in 2010 to $13.6 billion in

2014 and likely to touch $16 billion by the end of 2015 on the back of growing Internet

population and increased online shoppers.

Online travel accounts for nearly 61% of e-commerce business while e-tailing contributes

about 29%. Visa India spend data showed 53% growth in the number of e-commerce

transactions in 2014, adds the joint study.

E-Commerce players from the US, Europe and Japan are seeing slower growth in home

markets. They are increasingly looking to enter developing economies of India, Brazil and

China which have forecasted growth rates of more than 20% over coming years. Most

popular e commerce categories are non-consumable durables and entertainment related

products, highlighted the joint study.

While releasing the joint study Mr. D S Rawat, Secretary General ASSOCHAM said, the

greater adoption of Internet and smartphones is the biggest driver of e-commerce in India.

Internet penetration is rapidly increasing with around 300 million users in 2014. The

smartphone is steadily growing and consists of 35% of the overall mobile phones market in

the country and success rate of some of the technologies is directly connected to the

success of e-commerce”.

The e-commerce companies are concentrating their efforts on increasing the penetration of

their mobile apps for higher growth. Big players in this space claim to have more than 50%

of their revenue coming from mobile apps.

More than 235 million people in India access internet through mobile devices, the primary

reason for e-tailers to focus their efforts on mobile app penetration across the country. The

mobile applications are helping to reach more customers located even in remote and rural

areas. E-commerce companies have been able to bridge the service gap considerably by

sending service updates and other communication via their mobile app, e-mail, and SMS,

adds the study.

Page 6: Volume - II, Issue - I, Jan March15 - intranet.witalsee.comintranet.witalsee.com/intranet/Forms/ReflectionVolume22052015.pdf · Mumbai's dabbawalas - often semi-literate deliverymen

Page 6

The availability of e-commerce applications on various mobility devices is helping to drive

sales and revenue. E-tailers like Flipkart, Amazon and Jabong generate nearly 50% of their

revenues from consumers shopping using mobile phones.

The digital advertisement industry is also growing rapidly as there is a growth in digital

communication devices around the world. The increase in smartphones, tablets is enabling

advertisers to reach a wider audience. According to study, the Indian online ad market will

grow year-on-year at 30% to reach Rs. 36.75 billion by April 2015, adds the paper.

Every 30 seconds, global e-commerce industry generates $1.2 million revenue with

Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter contributing $5,483, $4,504 and $4,308 respectively,

reveals the study.

The valuation of Flipkart sharply increased from $1.9 billion at the start of 2014 to reach $11

billion by the end of the year. It raised $1.9 billion in three rounds of fund raising despite

incurring losses of around Rs 4 billion. Similarly, Snap deal saw its valuation increase from

$350 million to $3 billion after raising funds of $850 million. Snap deal also posted losses of

Rs 2.64 billion in FY14. 14 The valuation can play a major role for an e-commerce player

irrespective of the profitability of the company.

The big retailers are trying to complement the traditional retailing with digital commerce by

tying up with big e-tailers. The partnership between Snap deal & Chroma or Amazon &

Future Group owned Big Bazaar is no more a partnership between two retailers. It has

extended to a vendor and technology partners offering technology and logistics services.

Reliance retail is planning to launch its e-commerce website seeking to attract people from

online retailers. Shoppers Stop is revamping its digital platform, which currently contributes

1% of the revenue. The extended reach of the online channel is the primary reason for

offline retailers to launch e-commerce offerings.

The rapid spread of mobile internet, especially of smart phones could unlock a significant

market beyond the Tier-1 cities for the online retail segment. Undoubtedly, mobile retailing

is expected to continue to grow aggressively. In the next three years, global e-commerce

sales made via mobile devices are expected to top $638 billion, adds the study.

2) Flipkart ties up with Mumbai dabbawalas to navigate city streets

India's biggest e-commerce company, Flipkart, has tied up with Mumbai's lunchbox delivery men, famous for navigating cramped and confusing streets, as it tries to smooth the often difficult last stretch of its delivery to customers.

Dabbawalas have for decades collected hot lunches from customers' often distant homes and, using a complex delivery system and overladen bicycles, carried them to offices and schools across the city.

"Their unique delivery system has been smooth, reliable and has survived the test of time - even under extreme conditions," Neeraj Aggarwal, senior director for last mile delivery at Flipkart said in a statement on Thursday evening.

Under the deal - part of a plan by the e-commerce firm to explore new delivery channels - dabbawallas will make deliveries assigned from a Flipkart hub while collecting hot meals from customers' homes.

Privately held Flipkart leads India's e-commerce industry, selling everything from cellphones to suitcases and competing with Amazon's India unit and other home grown rival Snap deal for a chunk of the fast growing industry.

Online retailing is growing at a breakneck pace in India, which has the world's third-largest population of Internet users even with only a fifth of its population online.

Mumbai's dabbawalas - often semi-literate deliverymen from rural Maharashtra, the state where Mumbai is located - deliver about 200,000 "tiffin", or lunch, boxes every day, according to their website.

Their coding system has been recognized with the Six Sigma level of accuracy, meaning they make only one mistake in 6 million chances, attracting them admirers from Britain's Prince Charles to entrepreneur Richard Branson.

Flipkart said the dabbawalas had undergone training at the company's delivery centres and would start with a paper-based tracking system, moving on to apps and wearable technology

RETAIL’S “5 Ps”

The Retail industry has always been in the frontline of utilizing Information Technology

infrastructures and Information systems. Furthermore, to understand the basic foundations of a

successful Retail business, one should have the overall understanding of “5 P’s“of Retail –

1) PLACE / LOCATION - This is primarily the most important factor in the success of a Retail

store. The Best location will ensure good footfall which will ultimately result in good

conversion and sales as well. It should be in the vicinity of Good Brands so that the existing

customer walk in is already there.

2) PEOPLE / CUSTOMER – A company / person should go that extra mile to provide efficient

service to the customer. A world class customer service will ensure customers loyalty

towards the Brand which will result in outstanding sales figures.

3) PRODUCT – Product mix should be as per the customer’s demand and requirement and as

per the market and fashion trends. Proper replenishment of merchandise has to be there.

4) PRICE – Price must be consistent and should be at a level for the customers to buy the

products / merchandise. They should gain value for their spending.

5) PROMOTION – Promotional tools should be used to create Brand awareness and to make

sure that the customers know about the existence of our Brand and products. –Article

Wee Spices: We have introduced grinded spices along with the opening ceremony of Noida spice factory.

The quality comparatively excellent what available in the market, and it has proven with

internal surveys too. All the spices are certified with HCCAP. Hazard analysis and critical

control points or HACCP is a systematic preventive approach to food safety from biological,

chemical, and physical hazards in production processes that can cause the finished product

to be unsafe, and designs measurements to reduce these risks to a safe level. In this

manner, HACCP is referred as the prevention of hazards rather than finished product

inspection. The HACCP system can be used at all stages of a food chain, from food

production and preparation processes including packaging, distribution, etc. The Food and

Drug Administration (FDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) say that

their mandatory HACCP programs for juice and meat are an effective approach to food

safety and protecting public health. Meat HACCP systems are regulated by the USDA, while

seafood and juice are regulated by the FDA. The use of HACCP is currently voluntary in other

food industries

Story: Monk & Millionaire

There was a millionaire who was bothered by severe eye pain. He consulted a galaxy of

medical experts; he consumed heavy loads of drugs and underwent hundreds of injections.

But the ache persisted with greater vigor than before. At last a monk who was supposed to

be an expert in treating such patients was called for by the millionaire. The monk

understood his problem and said that for some time he should concentrate only on green

colors and not allow his eyes to fall on any other colors. The millionaire got together a group

of painters and purchased barrels of green color and directed that every object his eye was

likely to fall on was to be painted in green color just as the monk had directed. When the

monk came to visit him after a few days, the millionaire's servants ran to him with buckets

of green paint and poured it on him since he was wearing red. They were eager to prevent

their master from seeing any other color lest his eye ache came back. Hearing the monk

laughed and said 'If only you had purchased a pair of green spectacles, worth just a few

rupees, you could have saved these walls and trees and pots and all other articles and also

could have saved a large share of your fortune. You cannot paint the world green. ‘Learning:

Let us change our vision and the world will appear accordingly. Instead of trying to shape

the world, let us shape ourselves first.

5 Minutes

Everyone likes to be nice i.e. nice to others. No one likes to show the dark side of ones

personality to others. It is only the near and dear ones, close friends or sub-ordinates who

are usually aware of the certain aspects of ones personality which others may not be aware

of. Why does this happen?

Do we ever spend time to think about this? In this materialistic and mechanical world where

everyone is in the race to move ahead of others, amass more wealth and comfort for self

and family who has time to think?

Art of fooling others is treated as smartness. Straight forward people take time to grow

professionally or never grow because of lack of so called smartness. Selfishness means being

practical. Self-respect can be sacrificed for the sake of money.

What are we going to achieve at the end of all this? Trust is lost. Everyone is looked at with

suspicion because the mad race for prosperity and growth has killed the values and ethos.

There is nothing wrong in aspiring better things or growth in life but just pause for a

moment and ask yourself HOW DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE IT?

Is it by proving your excellence in work, being loyal to your organization and treating

organization's growth as your own growth OR by being expert in office politics, keeping

personal growth above organization's growth and taking organizations resources for

granted. Materialistic growth is no guarantee for self-satisfaction and money cannot buy

peace of mind.

Life is uncertain so don't wait for tomorrow, decide today how do you want to live your life.

Success should be measured not by what you earn or how much power do you yield but by

love and affection that you get from your family, friends and your colleagues. Honest

introspection will tell you how successful you are and you can yourself decide how

successful you wish to be.

Just spend 5 minutes in a day with yourself and your life may take a new turn.

SUMMARY OF THE SEVEN HABITS

Habit 1: Be Proactive Change starts from within, and highly effective people make the

decision to improve their lives through the things that they can influence rather than by

simply reacting to external forces.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind Develop a principle-centered personal mission

statement. Extend the mission statement into long-term goals based on personal principles.

Habit 3: Put First Things First Spend time doing what fits into your personal mission,

observing the proper balance between productions and building production capacity.

Identify the key roles that you take on in life, and make time for each of them.

Habit 4: Think Win/Win Seek agreements and relationships that are mutually beneficial. In

cases where a "win/win" deal cannot be achieved, accept the fact that agreeing to make "no

deal" may be the best alternative. In developing an organizational culture, be sure to reward

win/win behavior among employees and avoid inadvertently rewarding win/lose behavior.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood First seek to understand the

other person, and only then try to be understood. Stephen Covey presents this habit as the

most important principle of interpersonal relations. Effective listening is not simply echoing

what the other person has said through the lens of one's own experience. Rather, it is

putting oneself in the perspective of the other person, listening empathically for both

feeling and meaning.

Habit 6: Synergize Through trustful communication, find ways to leverage individual

differences to create a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts. Through mutual trust

and understanding, one often can solve conflicts and find a better solution than would have

been obtained through either person's own solution.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw Take time out from production to build production capacity

through personal renewal of the physical, mental, social/emotional, and spiritual

dimensions. Maintain a balance among these dimensions.

Tips on Personality Development

Here are some tips to develop your personality. All of us at some point in our life have admired leaders having a charismatic personality and secretly wished that we had some of that charisma in ourselves. Though charisma or inner charm cannot be acquired superficially, it is still possible to develop a well-liked and admired personality.

There are many other qualities that make a fulsome personality than sheer physical beauty. This is not to undermine the importance of a beautiful face but it is not everything. The inner charm or personal magnetism is what actually makes someone very special. However when the two are combined the combination is irresistible.

A good attractive personality is always an advantage in any situation. People are drawn towards magnetic and attractive personalities and want to know all about them. It is exactly the reason why people are crazy about celebrities and devour every bit of news regarding them with interest.

So, what is the secret of developing a good personality?

By constant self-appraisal and discipline, we can cultivate habits and attitudes that can develop our personality. These are not too difficult to follow and are qualities that we learn from our childhood but forget as we grow up.

1. Being courteous and friendly to everyone without bias and discrimination is a must. We are all so engrossed in ourselves that we fail to appreciate good work and people around us. Do not do so.

2. Be active in praising and pay attention to your friends, relatives, co-workers by listening to them and taking interest in their lives. You do not have to go overboard by giving gifts, remembering birthdays etc. but even if it is a small nod of acknowledgement or encouragement, make sure it is genuine. Everyone can spot a fake and it does not help either.

3. Be kind and gentle to people. Everyone makes a mistake, be forgiving and importantly – differentiate between the mistake and the one committing mistake. True, it may cause a lot of trouble, but it is not going to end the world. So be forgiving and be gentle.

4. Perhaps the most important trait of good personality is its confidence. Self-confidence or having confidence in yourself can make a huge difference in how people perceive you. If you unsure of yourself, you will be projecting the same image outside to others as well. And you can acquire confidence in your abilities by keeping your mind and body healthy.

5. Do not be selfish, be open to other people’s interests and try to be helpful.

6. Be clean and neat all the time.

7. Try to be happy and maintain a positive outlook to life. If you are at peace with yourself, you will radiate peace and happiness to others as well and people will feel comfortable talking and meeting you. .

8. Silence is Golden – an age old proverb, but useful nevertheless. Think before you speak unnecessary comments or speaking without your turn are considered bad manners and no one actually wants to listen to people who try to show off all the time. You may be an expert in your field, but that does not give you the leeway to hijack conversations and turn them into me, me and me monologues. Successful people speak little and put their efforts into doing rather than showing. So be wise and speak only when you are required to and up to the limit of your knowledge. It is important to acquire wisdom in addition to knowledge which helps us to distinguish between right and wrong. Wisdom involves character. And a good character makes a good personality.

9. Develop your character by inculcating good behavior and discipline in your life. Let your inner charm and faith flow out and embrace others in its magnetic wrap. Charge yourself with strong willpower and faith in your abilities. And see the world fall at your feet.
