The 1950s and early 1960s found Cape May at one of its lowest point in history, and property owners were divided about how to turn the situation around. One faction believed that the only way Cape May would ever be able to compete with resorts like Wildwood and Atlantic City was to bulldoze the old buildings. Another group that was primarily made up of apartment and boarding house owners, felt that a hands-off approach was the way to go. – Ben Miller

NOTHING much happens in sleepy Cape May in the off-season. Right? Right. It’s only been just over a week since the Singer-Songwriter festi-

val hit town, bringing with it an infusion of energy thanks to the arrival of hundreds of talented musicians from all over the country. And now we’re only a few days away from the 35th Cape May Jazz Festival.

The festival, sponsored by Bank of America, features Kevin Eubanks, formerly of NBC’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno, headlin-ing this Friday, April 8, with shows at 8pm and 10pm, and Grammy Nominated Latin jazz artist Poncho sanchez following up on Saturday, with shows at 6:30pm and 8:30pm. The two performances will take place at Our Lady Star of the Sea Auditorium. That’s the only sour note – it would have been a whole lot better if I could have ended that sentence with “at Cape May Convention Hall.” But enough of that for now. In the meantime, we will watch, and listen, as the foundations get laid for a center, even though we don’t actu-ally know who’s building it yet.

Where was I? Oh yes, the jazz festival. Like every other arts organization in the uni-verse, the festival has taken a hit because of the recession, so go along and enjoy some superb jazz this weekend. If you don’t want to restrict yourself to a specific performance, the weekend jams at Carney’s and Cabanas are highly recommended. For more informa-tion, visit capemayjazz.com. SPEAKING of big names heading into town, I’m going to switch from

music to food, though as Shakespeare wrote, they have a lot in common. The Old Grange

Restaurant, on the grounds of Historic Cold Spring Village, has been taken over by famed Philadelphia chef tony Clark, who once ran the kitchen at the Four Seasons Hotel in Philly and was once named as one of the Best Chefs in America by Food and Wine magazine.

Tony opened the restaurant this Tuesday, and since I am writing this the day before that, I can’t really tell you much about the food or the vibe, but I CAN tell you this is exciting news. A lot of people have tried to make a success of the restaurant at the Old Grange, which enjoys such a great location, but none have worked so well. Hopefully having such a master chef at the helm will make all the difference. Can’t wait to try it.

The restaurant will be open from Tuesday-Sunday, featuring a variety of Early Bird Specials from 4-6pm, and full dinner service from 6-10pm. I also hear that Tony will be using produce from an organic garden at the restaurant. Even better. “There will be more Pennsylvania license plates in Cape May this year, and his appearance is a major plus for the local restaurant community,” wrote the website Prime Philadelphia.

NOW, some more exciting news. You might have noticed that Cape May

has a rather splendid beach. Well, seems like a LOT of people have noticed. The Travelers’ Choice 2011 Awards, organized by the ridic-ulously inf luential website TripAdvisor.com, has just announced its best beaches, as voted by its members (and there are millions of them). Cape May was voted as having the second best beaches in the US, which is two places higher than last year in the same awards, and number nine in the world!

I hope that the person who left his dog-gie’s poo on the main beach last Wednesday morning is reading this – and yes I picked it up for you, you selfish, lazy jerk.

Ahem, sorry. I do get mad when I see this. There’s no need for it and ultimately it could result in by-laws that stop responsible folks from walking their dogs on the beach, which is one of the great things to do early on a fall, winter or spring morning, or late in the afternoon, just before sunset.

(Crime is rare in Cape May but, as we all know, bikes are sto-len and so, apparently, are issues of Exit Zero, which I can’t say I’m too unhappy about – nice to know that the magazine is still such a hot commodity after all these years…) Anyway, dear readers, we’re forbidden by federal law to put foreign objects into your mailboxes. & cook until translucent. Add rice and saute 2-4 minutes. Add wine to rice and simmer until wine is absorbed.

Add 3/4 cup broth to rice and stir slowly until almost absorbed. Continue stirring and adding broth in 3/4 cup increments

until rice is mostly translucent but opaque in the center. Remove from heat and stir in cheese and pear. Season with salt & pepper

dinner date where your priority is making a woman feel special, Tisha’s should be high on the list.

Priorities matter, especially in a relationship. I’ve dated women who’ve prioritized me behind work, school, pets, healthy friends, sick friends, houses, and even horses. Hey, I understand if I’m not #1, and that’s OK. But not even in the top 10? That’s not going to work in the long term. Being in a relationship means prioritizing

IT’S all about priorities. Knowing what’s important. Putting first things first. My first date for this column made that clear. Eileen (not her real name) and I met over dinner

at Tisha’s, on the mall in Cape May. The restaurant is a lovely little BYOB, not so tiny as to be cute, not so big as to be noisy, and definitely in the upper reaches of the price stratosphere.

Start to finish, everything was delicious. My mushroom risotto appetizer was a work of edible art, and Eileen’s oysters hit the spot. For entrees, she had the shrimp special, which was a bit spicy but very enjoyable. I went with the pork gruyere -- can’t resist mashed potatoes! -- which was good, but a bit heavy with brown gravy. Desserts were classic: a big slice of apple pie with ice cream for her, creme brulee for me, tasty on all accounts.

I like a restaurant that doesn’t dabble in small food. The meal should fill up the plate and my stomach. Tisha’s delivers on both counts. And for service, our waitress Stephanie was just about perfect. For a

She’s a perfectly nice woman: smart, funny, decent looking, holding down a good job. That last one is the problem. I’d been told she was a workaholic, and Eileen confirmed it, saying that she’d just taken her first day off since Christmas. Uh-oh! As our conversation turned to hobbies, well, she didn’t have any. She’s working seven days a week. No time for anything else. Danger, Will Rogers!

If work comes first all the time, where am I going to fit in? Can I plan a second date for three months from now when she takes another day off? It really doesn’t seem like I’ve got much hope of moving to the top of the priority list.

Cape May Jazz Festival Rolls Into TownTop-class music all around town at the 35th festival

FOR THE second time in three years the Cape May Jazz Festival was awarded the Discover Jersey Arts 2010 People’s Choice Award

for Favorite Music Festival in New Jersey. Over 3,000 votes were cast in the category and The Cape May Jazz Festival received over 35% of the vote.

The Cape May Jazz Festival was estab-lished in 1994 and has produced 34 highly regarded and well attended jazz festivals. The Cape May Jazz Festival is held twice a year, in April and November, and has grown from an initial audience of 300 attendees to over 8,000 attendees per fes-tival. The festivals have become one of the largest and longest running weekend jazz festivals in the State of New Jersey, and have gained National and International notoriety.

In 2011 The Cape May Jazz Festival cel-ebrates 18 years, beginning with the 35th Bank of America Cape May Jazz Festival, which will be held this weekend, April 8-10, 2011. The headliners for the April festival include Kevin Eubanks (formerly of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno) on

Friday April 8th, and Grammy nomi-nated Latin Jazz Great Poncho Sanchez on Saturday April 9th. The festival continues with many other great performers includ-ing local favorite Bluebone, festival favor-ites Winston Byrd, Bill McGready, Little Jazz Giants, and saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins. This festival also includes several Grammy nominated performers, includ-ing 2010 nominee John Beasley. Festival attendees will also be treated to out-standing performances by Lauren Hooker, Point Blank with Gerald Chavis, The Jeff house Band, Rotimi Hundeyin and the Afrophionic Rhythm Crew, Leon Jordan Jr., and many, many, more. Saturday morning continues the popular workshops series conducted in partnership with the Center for Community Arts (CCA).

The Old FogeyAh, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

evening, as I stretched to perform the range of exercises taught to me by no less than Ghandi, the damnable Lautrec fired the dart into my derriere. Well, only two things saved my life: one, my buttocks being so muscled as to prevent the dart from sinking too deep; and two, my habit of ingesting tiny amounts of the most common poisons in use at any time, so as to build up immu-nity in case of just this very event (though I confess I usually expect assassins to be black-clad ninjas, soft-footed Thugees or

I HAD a monkey butler once: he tried to poison me and steal my estates. The nefarious ape in question was a Capuchin, touted as “nature’s but-lers” though since they are scarce

as tall as a chap’s knee-britches, they are limited in the items they can carry. This may not be a bad thing, as in the after-math of the poisoning incident, I discov-ered a loaded Colt 45 pistol that had been dragged from the gun case in the third bathroom of the D’Catur Mansion’s West Wing (I keep armaments in all rooms that would, I know from long experience, be ideal ambush points. A chap who has not a blade or firearm to hand whilst passing his water deserves all that happens to him, in my opinion).

Clearly the monkey – who went by the name of Lautrec – had attempted to assas-sinate me by this means, but lacked the muscle to lift the gun. As it was, he scram-bled up to the attic and rif led through the unpacked cases from my 1903 Expedition to The Dark Continent, and retrieved a blowgun and a curare-tipped dart. That

muscled eunuchs come to strangle me with a knotted silk cord, not a tiny ape firing a blowgun at my rear end.)

Before I slumped to the f loor in a short-lived faint, I plucked the dart out and threw it backhanded at the f leeing Lautrec, who, weighing no more than five pounds, fell down instantly.

He was not dead, and I am not a cruel man, and so I took Lautrec to the secret “High Security Institute for Felonious Simians” in Philly. I used to visit him once a month to wag an admonitory finger at him through the thick glass, and mime blow-gun-puffing movements to remind him of his crime, and its failure. He would f ly into a rage and try and attack me, using a vari-ety of implements made from the contents of his pen: a sharpened banana, a knotted vine leaf with a pebble in the end and an enticement to play cat’s cradle, knowing he has cruel little fingers and sharp nails.

From that day on, I swore I would not tolerate an ape in the house, unless it is, of course, stuffed.

I USED to be a person slow to anger. The first time someone tailgated me, I assumed they wanted a better look at my ‘make love, not war’ bumper sticker and happily went on my way.

And, at the grocery market, if someone cut the line in front of me, I simply grabbed a trashy magazine and let it go.

Now, as an adult woman who’s moved back in with her parents, I need this patience more than ever. At the age of twenty-five, I’m continually peppered with questions like: “Are you wearing your seat-belt, Molly?” and “Are you getting enough sleep, Molly?” and “Why do you park your car that way, Molly?”

Today, while I was busy trying to write an article, my father followed me around the house asking if I could see his crack. (He’d just finished plastering an unsightly crack in the living room ceiling which, ten pages into my paper, I couldn’t have cared less about.) I know that I should be grate-ful for the rent-free space to live, and I know that my parents mean well, but I find myself snapping more than I should.

I blame waiting tables for my dimin-ished patience. People who come to the res-taurant for dinner are distressingly quick to anger, and this lack of tolerance, I’m convinced, is contagious.

I once had a guest tell me I was “not nice” because it took me a while to bring his bread. Calling me “not speedy,” I could have understood. Calling me “not terribly concerned with sour dough” and I would have agreed. But calling me “not nice” was just plain harsh.

The same night, a couple told me they’d never be back because I’d accidentally overcharged them six dollars. “I’m very sorry,” I told them.

“Too little, too late,” they said. And then there was the woman who

followed me into the kitchen so that she might wag a chubby finger in my face for never having offered her a coffee. Such behavior makes me wish I would have sug-gested a chill pill.

Being around such high strung indi-viduals night after night has made me into a high-strung individual myself. The last time someone honked at me, I unleashed a string of obscenities before realizing it had come from an old friend just trying to grab my attention. And at the grocery market, I consider boxing out the little old lady in aisle three if she so much as thinks about cutting the line.

The thing is, I really want my patience back. I miss being the easy-going girl who’s not so easily ruff led. In fact, I think we could all stand to be a bit more tolerant. So please, dear guests, try not to verbally abuse me over a loaf of pumpernickel or a cup of coffee, and I’ll do my best to find my patience. My folks, I know, will really appreciate it.

coworkers that they limit their offerings to fruit salad in deference to your dietary whims, but the Answer Lady doesn’t believe this tactic will get you nominated for Exit Zero’s Employee of the Week. It would be nice if the world would bend to our every inclination; if it did, bars and res-taurants in the Answer Lady’s world would serve only Beck’s Non-Alcoholic beer and club soda. Alas, it is not to be.

Plus, if coworkers were obligatory all the time, we’d have nothing to bitch about behind their backs, now would we? The best defense is always a good offense – arm yourself with your own healthy snacks so you won’t be tempted by their debauchery. Answer any attempts to coerce you with a simple “thanks, I’ve got my own,” or, “I see your Avalon Coffee muffin, and I raise you a banana!”

And kudos to you, by the way, for taking control of your diet.

By the way, the Answer Lady is one of those people who can eat whatever she wants, PROVIDED she exercises (especially since she has stopped drinking beer all the live-long day). SPRING is here, in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. Now is your chance to undo all the damage winter has done to your shivering body. Time to get those dry hands

out from under your mittens, and to soothe the shovel-induced crick in your back. It’s time to put your best face – and hand – and foot... forward. Conveniently, salons and spas in Cape May are ready to indulge you.

Spa treatments are nothing new. Julius Caesar was treated to a daily massage for his health, and Hippocrates – he of the oath – advised that the “physician must be experienced in many things, but most assuredly in rubbing.” Evidence of nail care dates back to 3000 BC, when the Chinese used a nail color that took several hours to dry, and in India, a henna-based dye was used. The Incas decorated their nails with eagles, and in Egypt, nail color denoted social class – the deeper the red, the higher the standing.

By the 19th century, nail care and massage were part of the healing duties of the American housewife. Cookbooks included recipes for “nail paint,” but most women

merely polished their nails to make them shiny, and whitened the tips. Vaseline, first marketed in 1870, soothed everything from chapped lips to diaper rash. Entrepreneurs like Madame CJ Walker helped to professionalize the beauty industry. Having made her fortune through hair, nail and skin products, Walker established schools where technicians were trained. By the turn of the 20th century, beauty was a respectable profession for women – although most still

worked alongside male barbers, and most customers were men.

Manicurists trimmed and shaped the nails and cuticles. Borax and bleach were part of their tool kit. Care of the feet was crucial, as customers were advised that sore feet caused premature graying of the hair. Massage was also essential, as pain in the body would reveal itself on the face, in the form of wrinkles. Of course, for facial massage, the hands were too primitive – only a modern massaging machine would do.

Joel Rooks returns to Cape May in his trium-phant performance of George Burns. Not only is this a poignant love story, it is filled with the hilarious acts of Gracie Allen and George Burns. It is also the story of immigra-tion and trying to make it in show business.

Our Second Stage brings My Son, The Waiter - A Jewish Tragedy as a modern day version of George Burns. Brad Zimmerman has opened for Joan Rivers and his stand up act is truly hilarious. There will be all sorts of comedy evenings to compliment this show.

YOU’VE probably wondered about them, the ones who lead all those CMBO field trips. Where does all this talent come from? Why are they so eager to

share it with... well, the likes of you?You show up at a field trip site (the

ones you’ll find systematically laid out in the Kestrel Express newsletter, one free to everyone who walks in CMBO’s door) or viewable online. They are already there, waiting for you.

Eager to answer your questions. Wanting to know whether you need to bor-row binoculars. Brimming with lots of cool information about lots of neat birds.

Including, and maybe particularly, the one that they’ve got their spotting scopes trained on right at that very moment.

Could be a perched Tree Swallow. Could be a perched Bald Eagle. Could be any one of 350 or so species that regularly occur in Cape May.

They know them all. Right down to the last grebe, nightjar, vireo and phalarope.

What’s a phalarope? It is a real designer

before those 7:30am bird walks and all of them are absolutely passionate about watching birds.

About as passionate as they are about showing birds to Cape May residents and visitors.

It’s one of the great things about bird-ing. Birds can be shared. If you are fishing, well, only one person can catch the fish. Everyone else watches. If you are surfing and you are in position to catch a good wave, everyone else just watches.

But in birding, everybody gets to share in the booty.

One American Bittern (a big, vase-shaped bird dressed like a freshwater marsh). Twenty binoculars and twenty sets of eyes drinking it in.

Nobody comes in second. Everybody gets a first place face full of WOW.

are Associate Naturalists. WOW is infec-tious. Not only that, it’s a multiplier. If you discover a perched Merlin on the beach, you enjoy a burst of WOW. If you put your spot-ting scope on it and let other people have an in-your-face look at one of these feisty falcons, you earn an extra heaping helping of WOW.

There’s lots of WOW to go around. And plenty of skilled leaders who can show it to

Am I a CMBO Associate Naturalist? Nah. I’ve got to work. Plan to be someday, though. Soon as I retire and prove I can make the grade.

The Movie ColumnTom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “The Lincoln Lawyer”

WHAT can you say about Matthew McConaughey? He’s been around a long time, but his films thus far have been about surfer

dudes (seriously, a 2008 film was called Surfer, Dude), adventurers (as in the 2005 film Sahara or the 2008 blunder Fool’s Gold), or a seemingly endless string of garden variety fluffy romance comedies (really – a ton of those, like 2006’s Failure to Launch or 2003’s How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days). It was in fact 2003 since I last saw him in a movie because everything that he’s been in since then has not been my taste. Whose taste do they appeal to? I’m not sure, but I am certain that somebody reading this will say, “Who is this guy (meaning me) to bust on my Matthew? What a hunk he is (meaning that guy – certainly not me)!”

Then there comes The Lincoln Lawyer. In this film, McConaughey plays a defense attorney who loves the work of getting the scum of the earth out of sticky legal situations. He makes his office in the back of a dated Lincoln Continental, where he has a driver escorting him around after a DUI incident a

number of months back. So I love the premise, which shows great promise. But Matthew McConaughey? Do you mean you’re really going to get me into a theater where a Matthew McConaughey film is playing?

As if the premise wasn’t enough to lure me in, the film stars Marisa Tomei. Heck, I

don’t even have to like a movie to enjoy Marisa in it. Look at last year’s Cyrus? What an odd, too-odd-to-like, movie. But did I like her in it? Well… And I’ve always like William H. Macy, whose characters are convincing and his delivery, although in the same vein, flows differently every time. He cleans up well, and he gets grungy well too.

The Lincoln Lawyer delivers. And I’m not just saying that because I like legal thrillers (and let’s not kid ourselves, that’s all this is), but this does not sacrifice story for stereotype – and McConaughey (here it is, he’s going to say it) pulls off his character’s tormented and trapped nature beautifully. Wow! Have things changed for McConaughey? Will I rush to see his next movie? I guess time will tell.

And let me end with an apology. To Val Kilmer. It would seem that some comments I made in my last column about the “once-trim” actor were taken as an insult. I never want to seem holier-than-thou (holier than Val?), so I will say I’m in no position (or “shape” if you will) to be throwing stones at Val Kilmer. The Dating Column Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island

CHRISTIANS believe in reaping what we sow, Hindus in receiv-ing what we give. Buddhists call it karma. My seven-year-old cousin calls it juju. Along with

many of the world’s people, I’m inclined to believe that good begets good, and bad begets bad. Recently, I’ve been given heaps of reasons to believe that karma is alive and well – at least when it comes to dating.

George, a classmate of mine, recently asked me to dinner. I met him at his apart-ment, where he asked if I wouldn’t mind edit-ing a paper of his before leaving for the res-taurant. When I finished reworking George’s transitions, and not a moment before, he backed out of our dinner plans. I was irritated until, in class the following week, I overheard George telling our professor that his hard drive had crashed, taking his paper along with it.

Of course, I can’t be too upset when things like this happen; I’ve pulled my own share of dirty dating deeds. Plenty of my most shame-ful dating moments have come back to bite me, and rightfully so. I once bailed on a date with a guy because I thought he was too geeky. I

told him that I wasn’t feeling well, and the very next day I came down with a flu so wicked, I was laid up for a week. And now, this very geeky-looking guy – who’s lost thirty pounds, ditched his glasses, and landed my dream job – isn’t looking quite so geeky anymore.

Friends of mine have had similar experi-ences. One asked an ex of his if she wouldn’t mind writing a letter recommending him as a candidate for the Florida State bar exam.

“If you wanted me to vouch for your integ-

rity,” she told him, “you probably shouldn’t have broken up with me over the phone.” Of course, after letting him sweat it out for a while, Pete’s ex wrote the letter after all; she was probably afraid that her own dating karma would suffer otherwise.

Sometimes I wonder if the number of bad dates I’ve been on isn’t directly proportional to the amount of feelings I’ve hurt over the course of my dating career. I think back to the times I’ve been callous with the hearts of different Cape May men, and I grow nervous that the Hindus could be right about reincarnation. For faking illness to ditch a guy, I might come back as a worm in my next life, and then I’ll have no chance of finding love.

Then again, all of the karmically correct coincidences I’ve described could be just that – purely coincidental. I’ve seen plenty of bad things happen to good people, and plenty of good things happen to bad people. But I’d rather believe in the power of a person’s dating juju and be wrong, then choose not to believe in this power and be wrong. After all, when it comes to karma, one thing’s for sure – if she does exist, she is most definitely a bitch.
