Notable Military Leaders, Indian Wars General Ranald Slidell Mackenzie

(July 27, 1840-Jan. 19, 1889)

Nickname: “Bad Hand Mac-kenzie” was a career United States Army Officer and General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was de-scribed by Ulysses S. Grant as its most promising young officer. He also served with great dis-tinction in the Indian Wars. His wounding at Jerusalem Plank Road during the siege of Peters-

burg, during the Civil War, cost him the first two fingers of his right hand and was the probable cause of his nickname Bad Hand. The American Indians referred to him as No-Finger Chief. After the Civil war, Mackenzie remained in the regular army and reverted to his permanent rank of captain in the Army

The DSC hosted the Michi-gan Rifle and Pistol Associa-tion State Championship for smallbore silhouette July 27-28. The weather was hot and the wind was blowing. There were 17 competitors from all over Michigan and from Can-ada, too. Smallbore silhouette is a competition to shoot at and knock over small steel silhou-ettes of various animals (chickens, pigs, turkeys, rams) at ranges of 40 to 100 meters using rifles in .22 LR. It can be very challenging. Even so, the DSC was well represented in winners circle. In the Hunter Rifle category, Associate member, Deon Germishuizen was the match winner but Mike Lucas was declared the State champion

in the Hunter category as the rules state that one must be a resident of Michigan for that honor. Rich Franke and Gary Dawson ran the match flaw-lessly and they would like to thank Jim Estes and Tom Van Hove for their efforts in range preparation. Detailed Match results will be posted to the MRPA website. There are three upcoming events that may be of inter-est to the rifle readers. DSC is hosting a Sporting Goods show at the clubhouse Satur-day Sep. 7. This might be a good time to pick up some new/old stuff to play with before winter rears its ugly head. Next, there is a .22 LR rifle shoot down on the Black Powder range Saturday, Sep. 28. Bring your old .22

‘plinkin’ rifle and have fun shooting at steel plates hid-den in the woods at 25-60 yards out. It starts at 10 a.m. in Jim Delaney Park. The final CMP games match is set for Sunday, Sep. 29. It is a M1 Garand/Springfield shoot. However, vintage bolt guns are welcome as well. Further details are given in the flyer in this issue of the P&K or on the Coming Events page on the DSC Website. Finally, the Black Powder note for the month is pretty simple. There’s smoke, there’s flame, there’s sulfur stench, and there’s a big old hole in the target. What more could an adolescent boy ask for. Walter Opdycke

MaryAnn Hilton MaryAnn joined the club in 1999 and is a camper.

September brings two special events for Black Power. The monthly woods-walk will be held Sunday, Sept. 8 on the black powder range at Delaney Park. This is an informal shoot with the course of fire being 15 steel targets at distances of 25 to 60 yards hanging semi-hidden in the woods. Be there at 9:45 a.m. for the safety briefing and shooting will start at roughly 10 a.m. It’s a lot of fun and it’s a good chance to bring out that old muzzleloader that you haven’t shot in a while. It’s also a great place to learn more about muzzle-loading. There is a flyer with more information in this issue of the P&K and also on the Black Powder page of the DSC Website. The second event is the .22LR rifle Woods-Walk to be held on the woods-walk course Saturday, Sept. 28. The starting time is 10 a.m. The entrance fee is $10. The course of fire is shooting at the hanging steel plates at 15-50 yards with your .22lr rifle. There will be a division for iron sights and optics. Come on out and give it a try. Also, please remember that Black Powder offers open shooting twice a week through the end of Septem-ber. You can shoot on the rifle range on Monday Eve-nings until dusk or on Thurs-day evenings alternately on either the Woods-Walk course or the Cowboy 50- yard range. These regular BP events are great for tun-

ing up your muzzleloader and getting in some prac-tice for squirrel or other seasons.

Tis the season of Skeet Championships! The Zone 3 Skeet Championship shoot was Aug 9-11 and the Michigan State Skeet Championship was held Aug. 15-18. DSC had par-ticipants at the Zone Shoot and we had good success. At least one member won a spot in each gun, as noted: 12 ga. – Bill Nielsen A1, Jerry Kott A5; 20 ga. – Gerard Klink A4; 28 ga. - Andrew Bielman Event 3rd (left side of photo, below); 410 bore – Gerard Klink AA5; Doubles – Bill Nielsen A2; HOA – Gerard Klink A4, Jerry Kott B2 and Bill Nielsen B3. Congrats to all the DSC win-ners!!! I hope to be able to report similar success next month when I report on the Michigan State Skeet Champi-onships. In July, DSC hosted it’s last ‘Major’ skeet tournament for

the year… the Hanaford Open. While many DSC members won places during the shoot, two main victors presided over the event. Gerard Klink (see below with Rick Trawinski left) won the 12 ga. (100), 28 ga. (100) and 410 bore (98) events and

Ross Szarenski (see below with Rick Trawinski left) took Dou-bles (95), 20 ga. (100) and HOA with a 391. Gerard had an actu-

al HOA of 397, but since he did not participate in HOA, he was unable to win that event. Re-gardless, it was some mighty fine shooting for the 3-day event! Since this was a ‘registered skeet’ issue, I thought we should talk a bit about the peo-ple who really make these events happen. The volunteer help… from the person(s) or-ganizing and running the event and making sure all the scores and payments are entered and submitted to NSSA… from the people loading houses, making sure the fields have drinking water and then cleaning up the fields… to those persons with the true NERVES OF STEEL… the Pullers!!! All of these people come together to make sure the events happen and they de-serve a big THANK YOU from all of us who participate in the Events! If you haven’t tried it, pulling for registered skeet is not for the faint hearted. It’s the hardest job on the field. You have to be on the ball for each and every shooter… each and every shot taken! While, physically it’s not demanding… the mental side is tough. The participant’s scores depend on you seeing the tiniest of chips that fall off of a target traveling 45 mph. But if not for the pull-ers, we wouldn’t be able to run the shoots we do… so please

make sure to thank your pullers (and any of the other volunteer helpers) at your next shoot! Junior Shotgun will be mov-ing to their Fall schedule in Sep-tember, with practices being held on Sundays at noon. Prac-tices will continue to focus on Skeet and Sporting Clays. If your junior is not yet involved, this is a great program to them up-to-speed on the clay target sports!

Lastly, the Fall Skeet and Trap Fun Leagues began Aug. 29. It’s not too late to join if you have not yet done so. Don’t miss out on the fun and the great banquet and prizes to be won at the end of the League! Sign up today and shoot a few rounds!!!

Junior Pistol practice will resume Friday, Sept. 6, from 6–7:30 p.m. in the basement range. Our practice is held every Friday evening during the school year unless preempted by another club event or due to cancellation because of holidays (Friday after Thanksgiving, Christ-mas, New Years Day, etc.). Juniors should be between the ages of 10 and 21. Those younger will be considered on an individual basis. Shoot-ers need only supply eye and ear protection, as club pistols and club subsidized ammuni-tion are available for use at this activity.

Participation is limited to those young shooters who have already completed a Basic NRA Pistol Class, or be-gan shooting last season with the understanding that they would enroll in the next scheduled Basic Pistol Class. New shooters can join in the fun and start shooting now with the understanding that they will enroll in the next Junior Basic Pistol Class, scheduled to take place Jan. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 and Feb. 7,2020. Anyone with questions should contact: Bill Malopol-ski by email at [email protected]

Corps of Engineers. Promoted in 1867 to Colonel of the Buffa-lo Soldiers’ 41st U. S. Infantry, which two years later became the famous 24th Infantry. He assumed command of the regi-ment at Fort Richardson in Jacksboro, Texas. His mission was to destroy and relocate the Comanches back to Fort Sill in Oklahoma Territory. He proved himself the era’s most effective Indian fighter at the Battle of Blanco Canyon and the Battle of North Fork in the unforgiving plains of Llano Estacado of West Texas. One of his most infamous punitive raids hap-pened Sep. 28, 1874, when he led his forces 1,000 feet into the Palo Duro Canyon on an Indian trail so steep the soldiers had to lead their horses single file. Instead of following the fleeing Comanche, Kiowa,

Southern Cheyenne and Arapa-ho Indians, Mackenzie captured and killed 1,500 to 2,000 of their horses, ponies and mules. Left horseless and starving, una-ble to hunt, the tribes all re-turned to the reservation by February 1875. By 1883, physically wounded seven times, 43 years of age, Brigadier General Mackenzie now suffered psychological wounds, losing his mind, which some attribute to a severe fall from a wagon at Fort Sill in Ok-lahoma Territory. He was re-turned to his native New York, committed to an asylum, and retired from the U. S. Army. Mackenzie died at his sister’s home on Jan. 19, 1889. He was interred in West Point Ceme-tery, N.Y.

Even though we did not have a team to enter the NRA/VFW National Postal Champion-ships this time year, we did enter our top two shooters in the individual competition, Roman and Leo Brancato, who did not disappoint in the three-position matches. The brothers stepped up to the firing line and gave their best shots. In this national match, Roman took first place (298/300) followed by his brother Leo who placed sec-ond (286/300). Congratula-tions to this impressive duo. Our Jr. Rifle team is proud of your victories and are look-ing forward to your return this fall.

For the win

We are looking for a few good juniors! Juniors that will learn to shoot and compete with our rifle team. We offer a very attractive and active Junior Rifle program that is open to young people, ages 10 – 17 years. We hone our skills in the indoor basement range shooting from the 50-ft. line. Practice occurs Friday nights from 7: 30 to 9:30 p.m. September through July. During the past two dec-ades, our team has earned many victory titles including the NRA/VFW National Postal Championship for six years in a row. Our competitive team is well known and many members have been invited to attend the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado for the U.S. Junior Olympic Smallbore and Air Rifle com-petitions. We have some of the most talented shooters in the country competing on local, state, and national lev-els tournaments.

If you are a junior at least 10 yrs. old, come down on a Friday evening and give us a try. No shooting experience is necessary. The first night we start with a short safety and range procedures meeting and then assign you to a spot on the firing line to begin your fun experience. You will receive expert coaching from our NRA certified coaches and will be carefully observed by our range safety officer. By the third week of shooting, a membership decision must be made to continue with your experience. The DSC offers a youth membership for $25 a year if a family membership is not desired. This allows you to use all of our equipment for free only paying a $5 range fee and $3 box of ammunition. All shooters are qualified through the NRA Marksman-ship program. The shooter can earn their NRA Expert and Distinguished Expert clas-

sification levels. In small bore shooting, you basically compete against yourself while learning the basic skills and fundamentals. When your skill level indi-cates you are ready, you will be placed into the com-petitive program with our traveling team. Remember, shooting is a legitimate sport enjoyed at all age lev-els. There are college schol-arships available to schools with participating teams. Come and give us a try. You won’t be disappointed. Juniors’ are an important and dynamic force for the DSC. Many of our juniors compete in state and na-tional matches and several have continued into college teams. Don Szlezyngier
