First, a huge shout out “THANK YOU” to the Chamber of Commerce and all their volunteers for hosting a wonderful Pioneer Days festival. And CONGRATULATIONS on the reopening of Buzzy’s! The very first customers served by Buzzy’s when they reopened were the Jason Chiquete family. This was because the Chiquetes launched a special Facebook page titled Operation Rebuild Buzzy’s. The Copper Basin Sportsmens’ club used Facebook to build up support for their Well Armed Woman classes and local firearm safety classes. The CBSC was able to enter a float in the Pioneer Days parade, and they’ve posted photos on their Facebook site. Facebook is becoming a very useful tool for people, community organizations, churches and businesses to “get the word out” about what they are doing. And the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition (CCEDC) is actually providing a FREE OF CHARGE class that is open to all that specifically helps you better understand and utilize all forms of Social Media to promote your cause, your interests, or your business. This FREE CLASS will be held on TUESDAY, April 8, 2014 beginning at 11 a.m. local time. Mila Besich Lira will be the instructor. Come one and all to the Church of the Good Shepherd “Little Gallery” located on school hill on Tuesday, April 8 at 11 a.m. to LEARN MORE FOR FREE right here in colorful downtown Kearny, Arizona! Final note: This is the FOURTH of FOUR FREE Classes that are being put on by the Business Success Center that is funded through the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition. Liz Harris Tuck has over 20 years’ experience collaborating with organizations in the private and public sectors to provide Human Resource and training solutions. LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I read with great interest the letter to the editor from Sheriff Paul Babeu. As an elected official, he does have the right to place his staff where he feels they are needed most. But I sincerely hope the sheriff is not playing politics in trying to coerce the supervisors into giving him more money in this next budget. Sheriff Babeu has asked for more funding throughout the past two years. One request was for $12 million. That was simply impossible to fulfill. We ended up agreeing on giving him a portion of what he asked for in early 2013. I will be candid when I say one of the biggest priorities for this board is public safety. Over 60 percent of our general fund goes toward public safety expenditures from the sheriff to our constables. Public safety is a concern for residents across the county, not in just one area. The sheriff feels that San Tan Valley deserves more of a priority than other areas. I disagree with this move. Taxpayers have been quite vocal that they want to see accountability when it comes to our spending of their money. I agree. It is important

that we manage our resources carefully and get the biggest bang for the buck. That is why I am in favor of Supervisor Cheryl Chase’s suggestion that we go through the sheriff’s budget line by line and see where the money is going and offer suggestions where he could get the most for your money. The sheriff has other avenues to pursue for additional revenue. There are RICO and grant funding sources available to the department. It would be prudent to look at these areas and see if the sheriff can fund more of his needs through these monies. I look forward to working with my fellow supervisors and the sheriff to see if we can find more efficient and effective ways way to help fund law enforcement throughout all of Pinal County. Thank you,/s/ Pete RiosDistrict 1 Supervisor

The Copper Basin area ArtUs Guild will be showcasing the group’s work with an exhibit in The Little Gallery in Kearny starting with an opening reception Sunday, Apr. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit is hosted by the Church of the Good Shepherd and will remain in The Little Gallery for several weeks. The reception is open to the public and refreshments will be served. This group, for the most part, has been together 17 years or more, starting with a class offered by Gila Pueblo College. Last fall the organized class was discontinued due to the illness of the instructor, but the artists wanted to stay together and decided to continue to meet and formed the guild. Although this year’s show will be the first for the ArtUs Guild on its own, it is also the 10th ArtUs show featuring most of the same artists from previous shows. All work on display is new and has been completed within the last year. The group is made up of people from Dudleyville to Riverside, and all points in between, including Kearny and Hayden. All the artists started their journey into the creative world in much the same way, a classroom situation and a dream. Several winter visitors are also part of the group. The guild meets once a week from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and new members are always welcome. Artists in the group are free to explore whatever subject matter and medium that interests them and the results are spectacular. The guild experience has proven to be unique as the artists learn from each other offering and asking for advice. Mostly the group works in oils, but oil pastels, acrylics, pencil and charcoal are also included. Exhibitors are from all walks of life, age groups, and

Students studying, associated, and/or showing with the group this year include Lina Cruz, Cobina Martinez, Darlene Dull, Gary Hill, Ellen Endsley, Vicki Clark, Frankie Olmos, Richard Olejniczak, Sam Hosler, Guyrene Ward, Peg Middleton, Joyce Palmer, Donna Gennicks, Carol Hosler, Nancy MacClennen, Becky Drew and Sherry Jordan. The show can be viewed after the opening on Thursdays

from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or by request by calling Sam Hosler at 363-9781. The Little Gallery is located in Ray Hall next to the Church of the Good Shepherd on Senator Chastain Street in Kearny. The church compound also offers a spectacular walking experience through The Little Garden. Paths lead walkers through the desert around the church with amazing views of the mountains in the distance and the valley surrounding the Gila River below. This time of the year the desert is alive with the beauty of spring and the walk is very rewarding. The Little Garden is always open.

Kearny - The first game of the week sent the Bearcats to nearby Superior to face off against the undefeated Panthers. The first inning started off with defense as the Bearcats were 3 up, 3 down. The Panthers first at bat was also 3 up, 3 down. In the second inning, the Bearcats began to awaken the bats as they scored one run this inning. The Bearcats defense retired the next

three Panther batters to end the inning with the score 1-0. The third inning came up with the top of the Bearcat batting order, getting a sec-ond chance at the Superior pitcher. The Bearcats managed to score five more runs, to add to their total, led by a Julie Meza triple, while the defense once again retired the next three Panther batters. The third in-ning ended with the score 6-0.

The Panthers did not give up, scor-ing two runs in the fourth inning, and one run in the fifth inning, while the Bearcats were not able to score a run in both those innings, ending the fifth inning with a score of 6-3. With the sixth and final inning up for both teams, the Bearcats were able to add one more insurance run, led by a Deseray Godoy triple, and a Janae Ruiz slap, in their turn at bat.

The Panthers came out and scored one more run at their final at bat. The final score: Bearcats 7, Panthers 4. Starting on the mound, Daniella Hinojos (6K, 3W,3H) and, also, going the distance for six innings. Offen-sively, the Bearcats were led by Julie Meza (2-3 triple), Daniella Hinojos (2-3 double), Deseray Godoy (1-3 triple), Janae Ruiz (1-3), Amee Ke-nyon (1-3), Sydney Contreras (1-3).

Gameball went to the whole team. The second game of the week took the Bearcats to Lobos country. The Ray Bearcats competed in the Salt River Tournament last weekend with mixed results. They played four games and went 2 – 2. They defeated St. John’s and Chandler Prep while losing to Northland Prep and Scottsdale Prep. In their final game of the tournament, the ‘Cats came from behind to notch the victory. They trailed the Titans heading into the third inning, 4 – 1. The ‘Cats scored 2 runs in the third and 2 more in the fourth to grab a 5 – 4 lead. The Titans tied

the game in the fourth inning, 5 – 5, before the Bearcats scored 3 runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game away. The games played in the tournament do not count in a team’s power point rankings. With tournament play now over, the ‘Cats can turn their focus and attention to their upcoming schedule. After a game at Miami and another at home versus Pima, the Bearcats will take on 2013 State Runner-Up San Manuel on April 4. The Bearcats and the Miners are two of the top teams in Division IV. The game versus the Miners is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

The Ray softball team defeated Superior last Saturday, 6 – 3, and removed the Lady Panthers from the ranks of the unbeaten. The teams met in a game that was part of the Salt River Tournament last weekend. “We played well and kept our heads in the game,” head coach Rikki Galka said about her team’s performance. “I like what I see in our mental approach to the game.” The ‘Cats took advantage of some early errors by Superior to take an early 5 – 0 lead. The Lady Panthers were able to settle in and battle back, scoring 3 unanswered runs to make the score 5 – 3. Bearcats’ sophomore Stormee Galka scored the sixth run of the game for her team when she alertly scored from third

on a passed ball. It appeared to be a risky play at first when it sounded like her coach was yelling, “No, no, no.” “I didn’t really hear what she said,” Stormee said about the scoring play. “I just took off because I knew it was going to be a passed ball.” Galka was superb on the mound as well. She limited a potent Lady Panthers team to only three runs. It was Superior’s lowest scoring game of the year and only the second time this season they had been held to fewer than 10 runs scored. “I have confidence in my defense,” Stormee said. Coach Galka was obviously pleased with the win against a team that should contend for a playoff spot. But she knows her team needs to improve in some areas to achieve their goals. “We have to be more consistent on

annual golf tournament at SaddleBrooke Ranch West

The Knights of Columbus’ 12th Annual Charity Golf Tournament to benefit high school scholarships is Saturday, April 5 at SaddleBrooke Ranch West golf course, milepost 93 on Highway 77, just north of Oracle Junction. Sign ups will be at 7 with tee off at 8 a.m. “This is promising to be our best tournament ever,” said tournament director John Wahlmeier. The cost is $75 and includes lunch and a golf cart. “To raise money for high school scholarships, we will auction off a round of golf for four at the brand new Casino del Sol golf course. We will also auction off a round of golf for four at the renowned Omni golf course,” he added. “For the the first time, we will auction off four reserved seat tickets to an Arizona Diamondbacks game,” Wahlmeier said. “These are only a few of our auction

items. And we have tons and tons of raffle prizes too. If you buy a raffle ticket you are pretty sure to win something,” Wahlmeier said. The Knights will offer two “Hole in One” contests at no cost to players. One is for a golf cart from Golf Cars of Arizona and the second is for three days and two nights in Laughlin, Nevada according to Wahlmeier. The Knights will award prizes for First and Second place, closest to the pin, longest drive, longest putt and most accurate drive. They will offer Mulligans too. “A hallmark of our tournament is our surprise prize,” Wahlmeier said. “One year it went to the worst score, once it went to the exact middle score. Who knows what it will be this year. You don’t have to be a great player to win a great prize in our tournament,” Wahlmeier added.

offense,” she said. “We have to be ready to hit at all times.” Her message should not be difficult to get across as some players on her team feel the same way. “We need to work more as a team and be more consistent,” Savannah Willis answered when asked what the team needs to do to be successful the rest of the season.

The ‘Cats will have to find their consistency in a hurry with the defending state champions visiting later this week. The ‘Cats will take on the San Manuel Miners in a matchup of two of the top teams in Division IV. Upcoming Schedule: April 2 at Miami, April 3 vs. Pima, and April 4 vs. San Manuel. All games are scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

Hayden- Winkelman - To benefit the Hayden-Winkelman students, seeking to make a trip to Washington D.C., the Copper Community Action Board (CCAB) is holding a springtime Community Concert. Why do students visit Washington D.C.?

According to the American Civics Center “Middle school students explore the capital city’s monuments, visit DC’s museums and engage in small group activities designed to build their historical frame of reference and civics skills..” A quote from a student who has made this trip, from the American Civics Center website, found at http://www.americancivicscenter.

Put a spring in your step with the CCAB Community Concertcom/, shows the benefits of a trip to Washington D.C., both from the perspective of learning and from a more personal angle. The high school participant (no name given) is quoted as saying,” My favorite part was the Newseum. I thought the Newseum was just about the news, but then I heard that there was a memorial to Sept. 11 in it. I had a cousin in the first plane that hit the towers. We were all just in awe of the different pictures, video, and firsthand accounts of the reporters - footage that we had never seen. It was really moving.” The concert will be held at the Hayden-Winkelman School Auditorium on Saturday, April 26. The doors will open at 4 pm, and, the entertainment will commence at 5 pm,

when a lineup of local talent will entertain you until 10 pm. Admission is $5. There will be intermissions, when you may enjoy tasty fare that will be for sale at the concession stands. The lineup will include MC Lucky Romero, Porter’s Ghost, David Romero and Peter Santa Maria, Bernadette Munoz, Monica Badillo, Johnny Silva, Danny Fessenden, Johnny Angel, Julie Borquez, Martina Borquez, Ariella Borquez, and, more. The CCAB serves the communities of Hayden-Winkelman, Kearny and Dudleyville in working on projects that improve their future prospects and foster community spirit. Whether you’re a homeowner or professional excavator, every digging job requires a call -- even small projects -- so be sure to:

• Call811atleasttwodaysbeforestartinganydiggingproject • Waitforthesitetobemarked • Respectthemarks • Digwithcare

Not calling can be life threatening and costly. You can harm yourself or others, disrupt natural gas service to an entire neighborhood, and potentially be responsible for injuries, repair costs, and criminal penalties.

If you ever suspect a natural gas leak, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 1-877-860-6020 immediately, whether you’re our customer or not.

For more information about natural gas pipeline safety, visit swgas.com/safety or call 1-877-860-6020.

PASTOR’S CORNERBy Joe Palmer

I was in a hospital waiting room today watching a lottery drawing taking

place in Chicago, and the thought crossed my mind, as it often has, that if I could but see an hour into the future I could be enormously rich. But as it goes, I can’t see a second beyond the present, and I know of no one who can. Last week I mentioned that a line of evidence for the veracity of the Bible is that it has elements which cannot be explained in terms of a human cause. The primary examples of such elements are prophecies of distant future events which have come true. Anyone who has spent any time reading the Bible carefully will tell you that it is filled with statements about the future. Did the Bible actually foretell the future and hit the “lotto”? William Foxwell Albright, a highly respected scholar from Johns Hopkins University said this, “I now insist much more

vigorously on the pattern of prophetic thinking which made the Prophets such successful predictors of the course of history. I continue to maintain the corollary of that pattern: the prophetic message was validated in part by the truth of its predictions, and there are very few biblical prophecies which failed to be confirmed. There seems to be hardly a single ‘prophecy after the event’ in the whole extant prophetic literature of Israel, …” (From The Stone Age to Christianity, 2nd Edition,

1957, p.3). How are we to explain this phenomenon apart from the intervention of an intelligence greater than humans and in control of history? I think we have no choice but to admit that God has communicated to us through the Bible. What do you think? Feel free to email me at [email protected].

FLORENCE, AZ - Starting April 2, Pinal County Air Quality will only issue three-day open burning permits. All permits will expire by May 1 and Pinal County will suspend the issuance of open burning permits on April 29. Burn permits allow for the disposal of plant material by open burning during limited daytime hours.

Additionally, State law prohibits open burning in Area A from May 1 thru September 30. The Pinal County portion of Area A includes Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Gold Canyon, San Tan Valley and portions of Florence. This year’s winter rains contributed to wildflower, brush and native plant growth, which

will soon dry. The annual cycle of rising temperatures will quickly dry seasonal vegetation, leading to an acute wildfire risk in the desert and upland areas of the County. The suspension on burn permits will continue until the summer monsoons arrive and mitigate the dual risks to public safety and public health.

Additional information on the Pinal County Air Quality program can be found at www.pinalcountyaz.gov or by calling the Pinal County Air Quality Division at 520-866-6929.Key Dates: As of April 2, 2014, Pinal County Air Quality will only issue 3-day open burning permits.

Pinal County Air Quality will suspend the issuance of all open burning permits starting April 29, 2014 and continuing until further notice. All open burning is prohibited by State law in the Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Gold Canyon, San Tan Valley, and portions of Florence from May 1 through Sept. 30.
