A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to everyone who organised and helped run eventsover the Summer Weekend, and to those who contributed in any way, and last , butby no means least those who supported the occasion by turning up and attending. We were blessed with good weather throughout and the programme contained

something for everybody to enjoy. The Open House and Dog Show at Folly Farm Pets was extremely well

organised and ran very smoothly. The demonstrations by the dogs used in thePrison Service were most interesting. The attendance was slightly disappointing, but those who were there had a most enjoyable experience. Many thanks to theBellaby and Hornsby families for arranging this. Thanks also go to Folly Farm Petsfor sponsoring the printing of the Grand Raffle Draw tickets. This item was aparticularly good money-spinner due to the diligence of all those who sold tickets!

The Barbecue was a huge social success withdelicious food, and excellent music provided by the

band Forward Line. Gazebos, tables and chairs andartistic lighting in the garden of Hall Farm House madea splendid setting on a beautiful summer evening.Again the organisation of this event could not befaulted. Thank you Jane and David Clarke.

Well done Anita and Stephen Clements for yetanother impeccably-run South Scarle Scurry. Therewas an improved turnout from last year and a goodrange of fancy dress to add to the excitement of therun itself! Again there was a wide range of ages takingpart, and all the starters finished the coursesomefaster than others!

The Sunday afternoon concert provided by theCollingham Singers was to their usual high standardwith 38 members of the choir coming to sing inSt.Helena. The programme of All the Bs gave a greatvariety of numbers from Bach to The Beatles, from Blue Moon to Bethlehem, sung with gusto, enthusiasm and feeling to an appreciative audience, who also hadtheir turn joining in heartily with the sing-along! Tea and homemade cakes roundedoff the afternoon very nicely.

I think the village can be congratulated on yet another special weekend with

something for everyone making it a social and financial success. JUDY

    Anne and Florence

    reporting

As you may all have noticed, much has been happening outside the church.David Clarke and Gary have completed the task of replacing the stolen lead and

fixing a discreet security device. The heat of two days forced them off the job astheir feet were being scorched by the hot lead! Taking advantage of thescaffolding, David also did some repairs to slates and masonry and cleared thegutters thus reducing the list of jobs itemised by the architect in his five-yearsurvey. Crumbling plaster inside the church, attention to glazing bars, rodding ofdrains, pointing the stonework and undertaking audits and assessments will keepus busy in the next five years.

The churchyard too is noticeably responding to the attention it is receiving andwe thank the team for their goodwill and enthusiasm. We now have a regulargrass-mower again, Don Thomas, from Harby (son of Phil, the horticulturist) who

also mows the village green, playing field and cemetery. Thankyou Jean andNigel for your help in the past. Jean is now a Friend of the Churchyard. Wealso put on record our thanks to Peter and Elisabeth who have now retired fromtheir invaluable work as Churchwarden and Treasurer respectively.

After submitting al l thenecessary information toEnglish Heritage in support ofour plans for the removal ofsome of the pews and thecreation of St.Helenas Space,

we recently had a visit form aHistoric Churches Advisorwhose charm could be said tohave belied her critical oversightof the venture. We were left inno doubt that this is not a done-deal as we await the decision, though the fact that the Dioceseis behind us will be a plus factor!

the Historic Churches Advisor on her recent visit.

About the middle of May, Lyn Broughton was listening to Steve Wright on the radio. Hewas talking about a poll he had conducted regarding peoples views on where they lived

and what sort of community they had. The winner in the poll, for the Best Community Spirit, was Stoke-on-Trent.

Well, she thought, no way could there be anywhere better than South Scarle for beautifulvillage life so she immediately telephoned the programme to put them in the picturementioning all the positive aspects she could muster as a new resident. She told themabout the Farm Shop, neighbours, village activities, air ambulance fund raising and thefantastic community spirit here! At that time she thought her comments were just beingrecorded and, if acceptable, would be used at a later stage.

    Flowers and thanks

Later that day, to Lyns amazement, Anita Clements called at her home with a beautifulbunch of flowers. They were to thank me for promoting the Farm Shop on the radio and

for all my comments about the village, laughs Lyn. Anita had not heard it on the radioherself but a couple of people had stopped her in Collingham and said that Lyn Broughtonhad been on the radio. I had no idea that my comments had been going out live!

Two weeks later Lyn was doing her voluntary stint at the City Hospital when two colleaguesstopped to ask whether that was her on the radio and, shyly, she said, Yes !

    LYN BROUGHTON STEVE WRIGHT

All the neighbours knew but me!On April 30th, my birthday, writes Lyn, John left home at 6.15amfor Nottingham and I expected him home by 10.00am. I openedmy cards and a few presents and at 10.45 am I decided to getposhed up in case John was going to take me out on his return.Still no John at 11.15am so I thought blow you! I will go outmyself for a coffee and cake. I wrote a note telling John whattime I was leaving and asked him to E Mail my twin brother inCanada and wish him a happy birthday.

At that point, John arrived home, and you can imagine I was nottoo pleased at him being so late. He asked me where I wasgoing and I replied, Out for my birthday! but he asked me toopen my present first..a beautiful wrist watch!

Suddenly the doorbell rang and when I opened the door, who should be standing there butmy twin brother Doug, all the way from Canada! What a shock! Wow! Now I knew whyJohn was so late, he had been to pick up Doug. This had all been planned behind myback. All the neighbours knew but it was kept a secret from me. What a fantastic birthdaypresent!

SOUTH SCARLE a caring and forward-looking community!

says Rev. David MilnerI wonder what we will think of this year when we get to

Christmas in around 5 months time. Most people will have felt

pretty battered over recent months as the world, national and

local economies have struggled against the global crash.

One of the privileges of my position as Priest in Charge to

the East Trent Group is to be able to enjoy the real sense of

community alive in our villages. This is certainly true here in

South Scarle. If proof were needed the memorable weekend

held in July full of fun, music and food which brought many

together showed what can be done when people are prepared to

work together as a team. In South Scarle, thankfully there are

    quite a few such folk.

Over the coming months more events will be planned which I hope will continue to excite

and invigorate our village. At the physical centre of our village is our church of St.

Helenas, a symbol of our history of past hope and present aspiration.

The plans for the church being developed by the village demonstrate a caring and forward

looking community. In such uncertain times individually and collectively it is good to have

something to hold on to. St. Helenas thousand years is a fine example of life, of love and

living, and of community, commitment and caring.

As many of you will know the East Trent Group of Churches is about to be enlarged andwill extend the length of the A1133. It is going to take some getting used to as we develop

new relationships with the northern most villages. In many ways it is exciting, but it will

    still be daunting as well.

I am very thankful for the wonderful support I receive from the church council without

whom I could not function. Thank you to all who support the church and its staff.

A Thank you note from Hannah!Hello,

Just a quick message to let you know how I am doing with raising my money formy expedition to Morocco. A really big thank you to all the people who havehelped me raise the money and given me jobs! My mum and I have been goingdown to the car boot sales at North Scarle, so if you do happen to see us there, please do come over and say Hello.

I am now well on my way to achieving my target and am still open for any jobs

that you may have. My telephone number is 01636 893377.

Thanks again for all of your help.

A Birthday, a Statue and Two Puppies! The 28th May, this year, was my 70th birthday. I had decided

to have a special luncheon at Thoresby Hall for about 95 familyand friends; and then drift back to Yew Tree Cottage for tea andbirthday cake, followed by a buffet supper later in the evening. The weather was very kind to us all day which helped to makethe celebrations so enjoyable. The setting of Thoresby Hall wastruly stunning with drinks in the Great Hall, photographs on theterrace and lunch in the magnificent Blue Dining Room.

Guests came from every stage of my life. Three from grammarschool days in Loughton, Essex, were the longest-standing,having known each other and kept in close touch since we were11 years old. There were also college friends and three lads whom I have not actuallyseen since they were pupils in my 11+ class in my second teaching post back in 1967 -

they are now in their fifties, one of them retired from the police! They hadnt really changedmuch at all, just older versions of the same characters! There were also friends from thetimes I had spent in Sheffield, Wiltshire and Leicester; and one couple even came overfrom Australia.

The garden back home looked lovely with Sue and Pete, Jane and David, and Adrian andMags taking on the major part of the organisation - what would I have done without them? The large, decorated gazebo, copious food and wine, timely music and happy nostalgicconversation entertained people late into the evening.

    A Big Surprise

The big surprise for me was the gift of a beautiful Grecian statue (decorated on the day

    with a 70

    th

birthday banner). All my South Scarle friends had got together and presentedme with it for a particular spot in my garden which I had long dreamed about. I could notbelieve my good fortune and it has given me such pleasure as I look at it every day. I hadsuggested to everyone that in lieu of presents they might like to donate to a school inZambia which I visited two years ago and whose Head was a former young teacher of minein Leicester. The school has 400 pupils with a medical clinic attached and is run by aChristian charity based in Loughborough. I was overwhelmed by the response - wecollected 850.00!

You may have noticed two puppies in the garden as you have walked past the cottage. Ialways said that I would have another dog when I retired, butsomehow I ended up with two! They are half-sisters with thesame Springer spaniel father and were born two days apart. One is a full Springer and the other is half Collie. On the day Ibrought them home, it was drinks and introductions on the lawnfor neighbours and anyone passing which included JackieBossart on bicycle, closely followed by Buttons the pony whoalso came in through the gate!

All this activity, accompanied by the sounds of my rooster andhens, sent Adrian into a state of apoplexy when he came acrossthe road, because his love for animals, shall we say, has to beencouraged. The dogs have provided so much amusement andthe time invested in their upbringing was vindicated recentlywhen, at the South Scarle Weekend Dog Show, they won first

and third places for The Dog with the Waggiest Tail!

TRICIA JONES turned 60 recently and decided to celebrate in style by having abirthday party for friends and family in the garden of her home in Main Street. Itwas a very hot summers day but guests managed to find cool shelter under thegarden umbrellas whilst enjoying the delicious food and drink provided. Specialentertainment was in the form of Scarles very own talented musician, StephenChambers, who played and sang some of Tricias, and the guests, favourite

songs. A good time was had by all!

Steve and Richard have had a very happy first year in South Scarle and decided to

celebrate by hosting a Summer Evening Party in the garden of their home, Church

View Barn. A large number of villagers gathered for the celebration which proved a

very enjoyable evening. A newly-acquired marquee had been erected in case of bad

weather but was fortunately not needed as shelter but provided a cosy setting for

refreshments - there was even a carpet underfoot! A mouth-watering selection of

food had been prepared, mostly by Richard, which received the thumbs-up fromeveryone!

In July, Lynn and Dave Betts, of Amos Lane, hosted a party to send off their middle sonJonathan, and his wife Sarah, to a new life inCalifornia. Remember the much-travelledwedding cake? Well, the top tier will be makingits third transatlantic crossing in August

accompanied by a Bon Voyage cake, againmade by Emily, Daves mum.

Sarahs dad, Ken, who lives in Sacramento isbattling a malignant brain tumour and thecouple are moving to be near him and the restof Sarahs family at this difficult time. Theyhope to settle in the Bay area of San Franciscoand the English part of the family is alreadyqueuing up to go and stay when jobs and a flatare found

    Famous Americans

The dress code at the party was Famous Americans and the outfits were amazing! There were two as Madonna, one from the Blonde Ambition tour and the other dressedLike a Virgin, a couple as Elvis and numerous cowboys and girls. Super-heroes aboundedand a Statue of Liberty was particularly striking. Dave looked menacing as The Man withNo Name and Lynn provided medical cover as Carter from E.R.!

Dan Betts and his Toddler son Thomas wowed the ladies as Top Gun and Little Maverickwhilst the youngest Betts boy could not be serious as J.P.McEnroe. The Jolly family madea welcome return for the evening appearing as Audrey Hepburn, Lance Armstrong, BrittanySpears together with Eleanor looking wonderful as Gabriella from High School Musical. And the happy couple? Jonathan was an American footballer complete with shoulder-padsand Sarah a stunning Miss California who said she would like to see world peace and to

work with children and animals.Fish and Chips

For the food, only a complete contrast would do, and what better than good old BritishFish and Chips provided by none other than South Scarles own Chip Ahoy. JackieBossart and her son-in-law Paul did a sterling job serving a delicious fish supper to the 50or so guests. Jonnys great aunt Betty, the oldest partygoer at 79 years and dressed asMinnehaha, said they were the best she has ever tasted!

As the evening cooled, the party moved into the recently cleaned and emptied garage.

Minnie Mouse was voted the best costume, and the evening concluded with dancing toJonny and Sarahs favourite music. We wish them health and happiness in theirnew life and hope everyone who makes the trip enjoys visiting them inCalifornia. BON VOYAGE!
