In Her Own Words...This is by far my favorite time of year! The holiday season is full of family time, holiday traditions and fun events. One of my favorite JLE holiday traditions is our December Mini-Meetings, hosted by members of the executive board. These mini-meetings replace our December general membership meeting and give all of us an opportunity to have a little fun together during the stressful holiday season! We have some exciting ones planned this year so watch for details!

The past couple of months have been busy for the Junior League of Evansville. Once again, the River City Rummage Sale was a huge success! Thank you to everyone that donated rummage, worked a shift, or purchased a fantastic find at the sale. We were also fortunate to host our 2nd annual Fall Into Fashion with Dillard’s in early November. This premiere shopping event is quickly becoming one of JLE’s favorite fundraisers. Our members and their guests enjoyed fashion shows, drinks and storewide discounts. What a great way for us to start our holiday shopping!

In the coming months, the executive board is excited to be hosting a fundraiser in collaboration with Eastland Mall. Santa’s Workshop will take place on December 6 from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. at the Eastland Mall Food Court. Children and parents will get a free picture taken with Santa, participate in crafts and enjoy some refreshments. Tickets are $10. Our provisional class will also be collaborating with Eastland Mall to provide gift wrapping in the mall during the holiday season for donations. More information on both fundraisers can be found within this LeagueLine issue.

I look forward to ending 2014 on such a high note and charging into 2015 with many more great events! I hope your holiday season is filled by time with your family celebrating old and new traditions. Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Jamie Scales

Transformation: The Governance & Management ModelFrom AJLI Courtesy of Lisa Vaughan

As part of the Strategic Roadmap launched in 2009, AJLI in collaboration with 18 Junior Leagues has designed a new model of governance and management. The purpose is to strengthen the ability of the League to be a powerful force empowering the leadership of women for community impact. The new model separates governance from management by creating a governing board and a separate management team.

Traditionally Junior Leagues have combined both functions in a single board of directors. However, the orientation is different, the skills are different…and increasingly Leagues are finding that charging the board with both responsibilities burns out leaders and prevents the League from taking its proper place as an organization for community change and impact.

The Junior League of Evansville has been participating in the roll out launched with other leagues across the country under the guidance of the Association of Junior Leagues International and the Action Learning Teams. Junior Leagues all across the Association have signed on to participate.

Where We Are Since the LaunchIn August, the roll out launched with an orientation aimed

at preparing the participating League teams for their role of embedding a “split” Governance and Management model in their Leagues. The orientation included guidelines and protocols for organizing the Rollout Team, how these teams should work with their Board and members and the expected

Governance and Management outcomes as a result of the rollout.

The Leagues began their journey with the first module by beginning to understand the difference between governance and management respectfully, and the basis for the “split” system.

The second module of the journey focused on the exploration of different separation models. Through this exploration, League Governing Boards and Management Teams can begin to identify how these models could apply to their unique Leagues. The participating Leagues were introduced to how the separation of governance and management could work for them by taking into account factors such as: League Size, their Board and Management compositions and term lengths associated with each League. From here, these Leagues will also begin to address the “link” between the Board and the Management team, while they begin to develop timelines for their transitions.

Getting to Know the Provisional LeadersBy Amy Murry

Ashley DunnWhere do you feel you have left your “mark” in the Junior League?“I think I have most recently left my mark in the Membership Cluster, specifically in Recruitment. I had so much fun recruiting the new Provisional class, and it gave me the opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful women in the process.” Who had a tremendous impact on you as a leader and how?

“My father has had the most tremendous impact on me as a leader. At an early age, he began teaching me the importance of honesty, positivity, communication... many qualities that are displayed by our leaders today. He helps remind me to keep a sense of humor when things get tough and to always have fun and enjoy life!”If you could be any character, in any movie, it would be… because… “Cher in Clueless. I’ve always been so jealous of her virtual, rotating closet! Who wouldn’t want that?!”

Natalie O’DanielHow many years have you been in the Junior League?“I have been in the league for eleven years.”Who had a tremendous impact on you as a leader and how?“The person that has helped shape my life as a leader is my Aunt Margo from The Netherlands and a friend Jeanne Marie

Gadient. Both have influenced me to work hard, to always be kind and appreciative and good things will follow.”If you had to describe yourself using three words, it would be…“I am a neat freak, ambitious and compassionate.”

Mary RokickiHow many years have you been in the Junior League?“I’m starting my 3rd year.”Who had a tremendous impact on you as a leader and how? “Kelley Ashby. She was part of our Provisional year. She always has a smile on her face and is always so welcoming.”

If you could be any character, in any movie, it would be… because… “The good witch from The Wizard of Oz because she made wishes come true.”

Angie SchaffsteinWhere do you feel you have left your “mark” in the Junior League?“I’m hoping to leave my mark this year with the Provisional Group! As a Provisional last year, I’m hoping this year’s Provisional Class enjoys a fun and exciting year and that our great group of ladies learns of the many great things the League has to offer.”Who had a tremendous impact on you as a leader and how?

“Both Monica Owens and Lisa Vaughan. Monica spoke so passionately about the League and because of her encouragement… I joined the League last year. And Lisa was always reaching out to chat and made me feel welcome at the GMs which can be kind of overwhelming and scary as a Provisional.”If you could be any character, in any movie, it would be… because…“Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman… It’s a classic love story with the famous shopping trip, red dress and fabulous diamond necklace! How could you not love the movie!”

Give Back & Wrap!~ By Jessica Hoesli

As this year’s provisional fundraiser, the Junior League of Evansville is excited to offer gift wrapping services at Eastland Mall this holiday season. The gift wrapping station will be located in the Dillard’s wing of the mall and will be on a donation basis. JLE will be coordinating volunteers for the station from our own members as well as from other nonprofits in the Tri-State area. This allows holiday shoppers to not only come away with all of their presents wrapped and ready, but also to help those in need in our community through the various organizations volunteering.

The proceeds from the donations JLE collects will allow us to award small grants to nonprofit agencies that specifically benefit the women and children within our Tri-State community.

Days and hours that gift wrapping is available:Friday, Nov. 28 - 9am-9pm Saturdays, Nov. 29 and Dec. 6, 13 and 20 - 10am-9pm Sundays, Dec. 7, 14 and 21 - 11am-7pm Mondays – Fridays starting Dec. 1–19 - 3pm-7pm Dec 22 and 23 - 9am-9pm Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 - 9am-5pm

For more information regarding nonprofit organization volunteer opportunities, please contact Mary Rokicki at [email protected].

2014 Executive Board Spotlight – Holly Dunn Pendleton~ By MaNissa Onstott-Lemon

I decided to join the Junior League of Evansville after they donated $10,000 to build the Holly’s House children’s waiting room. As the co-founder of Holly’s House, I was so impressed when I learned more about JLE and all the things they did that I had to join. I wanted to meet new friends and be a part of something that was making such an amazing impact in our community. Many women I knew and admired were members or sustainers of JLE. Why wouldn’t I want to join?

Volunteering was something that was instilled in me at a very young age by my parents, which was another reason I wanted to join JLE. Volunteering has helped develop my skills and personal growth. Volunteering provides me with life-long learning that I couldn’t get anywhere else. It also offers a way for me to have a real and lasting impact on our community and that makes me feel good! I am a better person because I volunteer.

Through my involvement in JLE, I have gained many new friends. From those relationships, I have learned to recognize training moments to help develop new leaders and valuable leadership skills. I’ve even learned to delegate better (this used to be very difficult for my controlling personality). I think all the benefits I’ve gained have helped me not only in my JLE capacities but also in my personal life.

I decided to pursue a board position with the Junior League of Evansville as I felt that they had been helping to develop my potential for six years, and it was my time to give back

and help lead our organization. I’m very excited about our League’s future and knew I wanted to be a part of the amazing potential JLE is currently harnessing. My best advice to give to other members who are thinking about getting involved at the Executive Board level is that they should talk with current members of the board about the board positions, and how they arrived at their roles. Listen to their advice on your skill development and career path, and then start developing skills you feel you may be lacking.

Members of the Month~ By MaNissa Onstott-Lemon

OCTOBERThis October’s member(s) of the month is shared by three JLE

members who have graciously agreed to be double placed on both the Technology/Historian committee and the Marketing committee: Sarah Whitaker, Ashley McReynolds and Caryn Selby.

Sara is enjoying her first year as an active by diving right in and getting heavily involved with committees. When she isn’t involved with her JLE responsibilities, Sara likes spending time with her husband, Phillip. During the day, Sara helps others relocate to their dream home or new job in a new city working as a Manager at Atlas Van Lines.

Ashley is a very active JLE Member, but when she isn’t volunteering for the league, she’s helping promote and market

the Children’s Museum of Evansville (CMOE) as their Director of Marketing and Development. Ashley has a passion for helping others, and is very involved in the community. When not helping others, Ashley likes spending time with her husband, Kyler and family.

Caryn is using her first year as an active to get very involved within the League. When Caryn isn’t helping out with the League, she is very busy taking care of patients as a Physician Assistant at Deaconess Hospital. In her free time, Caryn likes being with her husband, Thomas, and is anxiously awaiting the birth of her first child next year and her new role as a mother. Congrats Caryn!

NOVEMBER The member of the month for November is our entire

Rummage Sale committee. We appreciate the fabulous job that all of you ladies did to make this year’s sale fantastic. You were chosen because you took the change in venue in stride, worked tirelessly to advertise the new location and made sure everything ran smoothly. The Rummage Sale Committee also worked so well together as a team, and made sure that our members and customers understood the new flow of the sale. The committee remained positive and cheerful during the entire sale and handled all issues with smiles on their faces. Thank you for a great 2014 River City Rummage Sale! 2014 River City Rummage Sale Co-Chairs: Jessica Ignacio and Krista Weiberg and Committee Members: Starr Fryback, Marci Moore, Penelope Pennington, Joy Shell and Kayce Zeller
