February is in our rear view mirror and it’s time to
dance the night away at our Big Band Dance. The
theme for our Spring dance is Titanic! Travel back
in time with us during the voyage of the first ever
British luxury passenger liner, also known as the
“Unsinkable” Ship. The Activities team will
transform the dance hall into the ballroom that
hosted the final dinner and dance for many of the
passengers onboard the Titanic. River City Band
will help us create a memorable evening without
the worry of sinking into icy waters. Our dances are
designed to create amazing memories with your
friends and loved ones. Who
will be wearing the “Heart of
the Ocean” diamond? You will
have to come join us on
Thursday, March 26 to see for
yourselves.
Until then, Bon Voyage!!
Evonn Short,
Director of Activities & Transportation
Falls are the number one safety risk for older adults – nearly one third of the senior population falls each year with 70% of falls occurring at home. Older adults need to take extra safety precautions due to physical changes that occur during the aging process. What can you do to reduce the risk of injury for yourself or your loved one? Remove all scatter rugs, repair frayed carpet, tape or tack down loose carpet edges. Arrange furniture to allow adequate space for safe walking between and within all rooms. Wear close-fitting sleeves to prevent spills and burns that could happen with loose, long sleeves. Clean up spills immediately. Use a step stool or reacher to reach high shelves – do not stand on chairs or stools. Place safety strips or a non-skid mat in bathtub/shower and install grab bars – do not use soap dishes or towel racks for support when sitting or standing.
All Aboard The Titanic Themed Big Band Dance
Be sure to join us for a wonderful evening filled with
dancing, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while surrounded
by great friends and an amazing time with musical
entertainment presented by the River City Big Band!
Shuttles will begin to Holy Trinity Catholic Church at
5:50pm on Thursday, March 26th. This will be a
beautiful night to remember!
Welcome Aboard
Please help us welcome Travis Wilson, our new
Director of Safety and Night Management. He comes to
us with much experience and we are
excited to have him on board. He is ea-
ger to meet each of you, and will soon
start his Safety Meetings we look for-
ward to you attending.
Have a Marvelous March and remember
to set you clocks forward on March 8th!

“Caught Doing Something GREAT!
OUR TEAM is happy to the gills!
The employee recognition program is meant to recognize,
reward, and motivate multiple employees for doing great
things here on our Independence Hill campus.
This month’s mystery employee has a bubbly personality that can
be heard throughout the halls here at Independence Hill. Born in
November, this native Texan tells of her fond childhood memories
spending weekends with her closest cousins and brother staying up
late, running around through the neighborhood and making up
games they could all partake in. Being huge on family, there is no
surprise that her and her loved ones would end up on a magical
vacation to the happiest place on earth, Disney World. Though
nothing tops meeting Mickey Mouse, this mystery lady does dream
that one day she will sail the ocean on a cruise liner and meet her
favorite Pop Star in person. Growing up she had always had a
knack for creativity and it shows to this day with her hobbies
including singing, painting and cooking. With her love of taking
care of others, as a long time babysitter, she
found her way to Independence Hill and loves
to be here helping out with all the residents.
Her fun, uplifting and helpful attitude resonates
with all the community and her ability to make
you laugh is contagious! Can you guess who
this month’s mystery employee is?

The Declaration March 2020
Mystery Resident
Born October 6th in the nearby town of New Braunfels, this month’s mystery
resident was considered one of the boys growing up with one older brother
and all the neighborhood boys. Tired of the commute back and forth to his job
at City Public Service, her father decided to pack up the house and move his
family to the great city of San Antonio. It was here at the local high school of
Winston Churchill that she would meet her future husband in the band
program were she was a Majorette that could not only baton twirl but could
also play the clarinet. After graduating in 1968, this mystery lady went on to
college at Southwest Texas to study Education, Reading/English and Special
Education, just like her mother did. A few years out of High School, the two
sweethearts that would exchange love notes during band performances got
married in August of 1971. With her husband in the Air Force and herself a
Special Education teacher for students of all grades it is almost hard to believe
she would have found the time to raise two sweet and endearing children with
her son still coming over every weekend for Sunday night dinner! When she
isn’t enjoying her time with her family, this mystery lady loves to stay busy by
reading, playing games (especially bingo) and is still fond of crocheting,
knitting and sewing just like her grandma taught her. Her cheerful disposition
is easy to spot and her friendly attitude has sure to have greeted you in the
hallways before!
Can you guess who this month’s mystery resident is?
