Genealogical Information Found In The Richard H. Thornton Library's Oldest Book by Mark Anthony Pace, North Carolina Room Librarian, Richard H. Thornton Library

The oldest book currently in the possession of The Richard H. Thornton Library, Oxford, N. C., is a bound 1789 edition entitled "The Arminian Magazine Consisting Of Exacts And Original Treatises On General Redemption. Volume 1. For the Year 1789. Printed in Philadelphia." The book was owned by Rev. Lewis Taylor, who is famous in local history for having an unfortunate encounter with one Mr. Robert Potter. Eventually the book came into the possessesion of noted Granville County historian, Frances B. Hays.

Attached to this book is a letter, written about 1940, which reads as follows: "Mr. Edward F. Taylor. Dear Edward: This will give you some idea of what your great-great-grandfather was reading 150-odd years ago. I found it among my father's old books and thought you might be interested.

F. B. Hays"

First Conveyances in Granville County

Immediately after the formation of Granville County in 1746 the books were opened for registration of deeds at the home of Col. Wm. Eaton designated for that purpose in the act of creating the county. The deeds were duly registered at first by Robert Forster, clerk, who was succeeded in the office by Wm. Kendrick a few days thereafter.

A Creed to Live By

Don't undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special. Don't set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you. Don't take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would your life, for without them life is meaningless. Don't let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life. Don't give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying. Don't be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is a fragile thread that binds us to each other. Don't be afraid to encounter riskd. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave. Don't shut love out of your life by saying its' impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give love, the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly, and the best way to keep love is to give it wings. Don't dismiss your dreams. To be without dreams is to be without hope; to be without hope is to be without purpose. Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you've been but also where you're going. Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way. Nancye Sims

OBIT - One of Granville's Best Men Gathered Home Oxford Public Ledger January 5, 1906

Mr John H. Webb passed away Saturday morning at his home

The subject of this sketch was born in Granville County at the old homestead, two miles north of Tally Ho, and was the third son in descent to own land upon which he was born. His grandfather William Webb, son of James and Mary Edmundson Webb, married Frances Young in Essex County, Va, May 1, 1751, and moved to Granville County, first settling on Spew Marrow, near Abrams Plains, in Northern part of the county, from where in 1776 he moved to the place where he lived until his death in 1809. His son John Webb inherited the homestead and married Margaret Howard by whom they had nine children as follows: Mrs Martha Dickens, Mrs Mary Edmundson Harris, Mrs Sarah Kerr, Mrs Margaret Cole, Mrs Fannie Royster, Samuel S. Webb of Mobile, Alabama, James Webb, William Webb, John Henry Webb, and Miss Bettie Webb of Philadelphia, who is the only surviving member of the family. In 1826 John Webb bought ofB. H. Wortham the place now owned by James Renn, Esq., containing 740 acres, on the Oxford and Hillsboro road, and moved there to live. He gave the home place to John Henry Webb and died in April 1858. John Henry Webb was born May 26, 1825, and married Frances, daughter of Joseph Amis, who was a Colonel in the War of 1812. The fruit of this marriage was three children, Joseph Amis Webb, John Webb and Fannie Amis who married Samuel V. Morton. Mrs Webb was a devoted wife and mother, a devout christian and deeply devoted to aiding and caring for the families of the soldiers in the army and the widows and orphans of those who had fallen in battle. She died June 15, 1862, only 28 years old, and was mourned by a host of friends and relatives.

Mr Webb married again in 1866 Miss Lucy Daniel, daughter of Nathaniel Daniel and sister of Capt. Nat B. Daniel. The children of this marriage were Annie who married Rev. John E.Wool, Lucy who married Joseph H. Baird, and Samuel Webb, all of whom together with their mother survive him.

He was educated at Oxford Academy, where the Female Seminary now stands and at Bingham School in Hillsboro. While at Hillsboro he was roommate and bed fellow of J. Johnston Pettigrew, the erudite scholar, great lawyer and magnificent solder and the friendship there formed endured until the death of Gen. Pettigrew at Falling Waters in July 1863. Another of his school mates was William Webb, of St. Louis now the oldest surviving member of the Webb family.

During the civil war Mr Webb was the enrolling officer and a member of the Home Guard until the last year of the war when he went into active service as a member of Company - Regiment and surrendered under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston near Greensboro from which he walked home.

After the war he devoted himself to farming of which he made a success, and for a while was a partner in merchandising with his kinsman James H. Webb at Tally Ho. Mr Webb was one of the foremost citizens of his county, prominent in all good works, County Commissioner and for many years a Justice of the Peace. His service was often sought and his judgement much relied

on by large circle of friends and acquaintances .. Like his long line of ancestors Mr Webb was a C strong Presbyterian and for many years was a member and ruling elder in Geneva Church and his house was the home of many pastors of that and other churches whenever in the neighborhood.

He was a man of strong character, one upon whom his pastor, friends and his family could always rely with assurance of sympathy, guidance and help in all times of doubt, trouble, sickness and distress. Uplifting and helpful was his life to acquaintances and friends it was in the family circle that it could be seen in all its beauty and purity. No more devoted son, husband or father ever lived and the memories of the days of home made for his dear ones on earth by his loving care will only be exceeded by the realities of blessed home above where he awaits them. The courtly deference and sweet tenderness of his devotion to his beloved wife was extremely beautiful.

He was not a man of strong physique, but by observance of the rules of health and proper care of his body and strict attention to his spiritual condition his health preserved until a good old age, until 1 o'clock on the morning of Saturday December 30, 1905, surrounded by his devoted wife and children, grandchildren and friends he quietly passed away.

On Sunday afternoon as the old year drew to a close the funeral services were held at the home, and in spite of the fearful weather a large concourse of friends and neighbors assembled to show their love and respect and tenderly laid him away in the family graveyard among his ancestors and dear ones. The snow gently falling upon the new made grave seemed a beautiful tribute to a character as pure and unsullied as itself. C The funeral services were held by Rev. John E. Wool and the following named friends served as pallbearers; Honorary - Thos B. Daniel, Wm. T. Allen, C. D. Osborn, J. B. Roller, R. E. Booth, Dr. E. B. Meadows and A. W. Graham. Active - W. J. Clement, T. M. Arrington, James W. Davis, J. S. Jones, T. L. Roberts, Lee Clement, J.B. Mayes, Otho Daniel, and Samuel Howard, Jr.

A Little Tarheel History

·In the 1960's John F. Kennedy had a vision oflanding men on the moon within the decade. He handpicked a Granville County native James E. Webb to lead NASA's mission to land Americans on the moon by the end of 1960's. James Webb an Oxford native was born in Tally Ho near Oxford in 1906. When his father was appointed county school superintendent the family moved to Oxford by horse and buggy.

In 1929 the stock market crashed and the onset of the Great Depression drove him to seek opportunities elsewhere. A Marine Corps ad caught his eye. He signed up for flight school on Long Island, New York. It sparked a lifelong passion for aviation.

James Webb worked many jobs until he had a one on one meeting with President Kennedy. Kennedy needed someone with proven managerial skills and political savvy, who could navigate the halls of Congress and the federal bureaucracy. For the next seven years James Webb politicked, coaxed, cajoled and maneuvered for NASA in Washington. He was able to secure the political support and resources to accomplish the Apollo moon landing on schedule.

In 2013 the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope will be a high-tech memorial for a remarkable Granvillian.
