I have been a member of the Macomb Guild since we first met at Quilter’s Corner in the Spring of 2001. Our first regular meeting was held on September 10, 2001 here at Trinity. The next morning brought the devastation at the World Trade Center and those two events will forever be linked in my mind. As we have evolved over the past 15 years, it’s easy to forget that not everyone in our Guild has been on the same journey.
Here is a brief overview of the traditions that have formed over these years.
September Birthday Party For our first meeting of the year, we typically do not schedule a speaker. There is usually a lot of Guild business to discuss with the membership as well as pre-senting the plans for the upcoming Guild year. We like to celebrate with a birthday cake and Show and Tell.
Fallfest, Winterfest, Springfest We schedule an all day sit and stitch here at Trinity on a Sat-urday. Members bring their own projects and sew from 9:00-6:00. We have a catered lunch and invite a quilt store to be a vendor at the event. There are door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and lots of sewing and fun. Space is limited to 40 and the cost is $20 for the day. ($25 for non-members) This covers the room rental and lunch.
Retreats Individual members might organize a weekend out-of-town retreat during the year. Locations and costs vary. We will announce any planned retreats at our meetings and you can make arrangements with the person in charge of coordinating that event. Space is limited depend-ing on the retreat facility.
Annual Christmas Party Our December meeting is a potluck dinner for members only. Some members like to decorate their tables and exchange gifts to celebrate the season.
Charity Sewing/Cutting Days Our charity committee schedules 2 or 3 days a year to work on preparing quilt kits for members to make for various charities. Sometimes we cut fabric and batting, sometimes members are asked to bring machines and sew, quilt or attach bindings to quilts. Locations will vary. There is no cost for this and lunch is usually on your own or a salad bar might be organized.
President’s Tea Our June meeting is our final meeting of the year and again, we have a pot-luck dinner for members only. Also, some members like to dress up and decorate their tables with lady-like teapots, cups, etc. Our annual election of Board members is held and the President is presented with a thank you gift.

GOOD BYE SUMMER, HELLO AUTUMN
I certainly had a great summer swimming in our pool, hanging out with my college age kids,
and staying inside where it was cool with my hubby watching the Olympics. My daughter and I went
to see Keith Urban in concert in June! Woo Hoo! I even visited a few quilt shops, and continued
working on my La Passion hexie project. I was able to work with some board members over the
summer setting up our budget, planning meetings/ workshops and updating the website. I’d like to
thank each of them for their hard work over the summer.
As we begin our 15th year, I want to extend a warm welcome to new and returning members!
Isn’t it great to know that we have this nice venue, Trinity Lutheran Church community center, to call
home for our monthly quilt meetings? This is a place for us to come to share quilting friendships,
listen to speakers, and escape from our normal lives for a couple hours a month. Our guild has ex-
perienced a lot of interest in the past few years and we have a lot of new members. Let all of us re-
member what it’s like to be a new member and extend a warm welcome and a seat at the table. It’s
great to wear your name badge because it helps others learn your name.
This year, we have a lot of great speakers, 2 workshops scheduled, and a few fun meetings
planned!
From the President — Sue Sharkey
We’ve got room for one more!
In an effort to make our guests and new members feel welcome,
this year we will have a table reserved for guests and new mem-
bers to sit at until they can make some new friends. We have
probably all been in the situation where we went somewhere
new and didn’t know anyone. I am also starting a new program,
called “We’ve got room for one more!” I will have 3 signs at the membership table that
say: “We’ve got room for one more!” I am asking members to voluntarily open their table
up to one guest or new member. If you are interested in volunteering for this, you would
simply take one of the signs and place it on your table so that a guest or new members
know you have room for one more. Once you have seated a new member or guest at
your table, you can then either lay the sign down, or bring it back to the membership ta-
ble. We typically have about 5 guests that attend our meetings. If every table took a turn,
this would help to make our guests and new members feel welcome. If you have any
questions, please contact me, Sandi Miski

(586) 909-1594 to receive a $20 gift certificate to Guildcrafters
in Berkley

The Charity committee distributed approximately 100 quilts to Immanuel Lutheran
prayer ministry, Luv Pacs, Turning Point, Veterans with PTSD, Inter Faith Caregivers
and various individuals during the last year. In November 21, 2015 approximately
17 women participated in our charity quilt day. We cut up 1 bin of kits that had
been pre coordinated (with fabric and pattern), have 70 quilts ready to be quilted
(used up 90 yards of batting), sewed a few tops and emptied 3 bins of fabric. On
March 12, 2016 we held our second charity with approximately 14 women where
we cut and sewed quilt tops.
A big shout out to Mary Ellen Zajac, she quilted 50 quilts for charity over the sum-
mer.
If there is a charity and/or an individual that you would like the Guild to donate a
quilt to please see me, Claudia Baker

MEET A MEMBER - SANDI MISKI
Hello I am your new Membership person for 2016-2017. I grew up in Roseville and now live in Mt.
Clemens with my husband Mike, we have been married for 34 years. Our children are Jennifer,
Cyndi, Crissy and Michael. We have 5 grandchildren.
I have been with the Guild for six years and this is my first time on the board. I also belong to the
Quilt Guild of Metro Detroit.
I learned to sew when I was in elementary school, but did not start quilting until 2002. I started with
the Saturday sampler blocks at Quilter’s Corner and took a Log Cabin Quilt in a Day class. This
was my first quilt, I finished it in August 2003 during the big power outage.
I quilt and sew to relax. The rhythm of the sewing machine calms me. My favorite quilt pattern is
the log cabin because it is so versatile with the variety of layouts you can do with it.
I am usually drawn to scrappy quilts, but like a variety of batiks, modern, and civil war reproduction
colors. I prefer machine quilting and would love to get more experience with my long-arm.
The most memorable quilt I have done was one I made for my Dad in 2010. It was a labor of love
to design it and present it to him. He loved it and when he passed away in 2013, we draped it over
his casket instead of flowers.
The other hobby I like to do is genealogy. My favorite movie is “It’s a Wonderful Life” with Jimmy
Stewart, it is a reminder that we all make a difference in this world, even though we may not real-
ize it. My favorite food is California Roll Sushi.
I would love to have another opportunity to talk to my dad and hear one of his corny jokes.
