Just drive down the
road and you can learn a
lot about someone. For in-
stance, if I see a truck with
a NRA bumper sticker and
a Browning logo sur-
rounded by camo accents,
I’m sure they will pretty
much help me if I have a
need of any kind. On the
other hand, let someone
drive by in a convertible
Volvo with a bumper
sticker that says “real men
play polo,” and I know
pretty much that I’m on
my own. You say I’m pro-
filing. I say you have an amazing grasp of
the obvious. Yes I am and so do you. I actu-
ally see this in real-time almost every week.
I own a 2012 Toyota Tundra and a 1996
Honda Passport. The Honda is my preferred
hunting and fishing vehicle. It goes no more
than about 15 miles in one direction. While
my camo’d Toyota turns some heads at
times, my Honda turns noses – mostly up.
The chicks don’t dig it and neither does any-
body else. I can remember one time predict-
ing that I would be pulled over by a Park
Ranger. I had passed his parked car on the
way to a hunt. His friends were just below
my turn and had set up a roadblock. Fortu-
nately since I was turning before the road-
block, I would not have to be checked. But
as I passed him, I knew he would assume I
had simply tried to avoid it and would pull
me over. I was right and I don’t believe he
would have done that if I had been in my
Toyota. After sifting through the dirt in my
back seat, checking my license, tags, and
carry permit he realized that his judgment
was wrong.
Now before you
condemn him for profiling
me, let me assure you that
you would have done the
same thing. It’s natural and
to deny this makes the
deny-er untruthful. (The
greatest blunder by my
park ranger would have
been if he had honestly de-
nied that he was profiling)
In fact, we all decide to be
looked at in a particular
way. We put camo and a
gun sticker on our truck so
others will see us a certain
way. Many luxury car
dealers advertise specific cars as being a
symbol of success. We even buy certain
clothes because they are embroidered with a
logo that only the rich can afford. We do all
of this because we want others to categorize
us. Just ask the millionaire who decides to
become homeless for a week or the preacher
who dresses up as a vagrant to see how his
congregation will accept him, if all of this
matters. They will tell you it does.
We are all perceived and we all per-
ceive others by certain visual criteria. We
also perceive ourselves by those criteria.
God doesn’t. He sees the heart and while He
probably could not care less about what we
wear or what we drive, He does care about
the value we put on things that will rot, rust,
or ruin. So go ahead and enjoy whatever God
has blessed you with but remember the
greatest class to be put in, is the class of
those who value a right heart.

Staff ReportApril Brock Lankford, a star catcher at Bell
County High School
in the late 1990s,
was inducted into
the Kentucky Prep
Softball Hall of
Fame in Louisville
in June.
April played softball
at Bell County from
1995-1998 starting
all four years as a
catcher. Her fresh-
man year coincided
with the first year of
fast-pitch softball in
Kentucky. In 1995,
she hit .615 which
stood as a KHSAA
single season record
for 8 seasons. She
finished her career at
BCHS with a batting
average of .481,
which still ranks in the top 20 in the KHSAA
record books. Her name also still appears in
the top 25 of the KHSAA record books for
runs scored in a career (178), runs scored in
a season (55), and stolen bases in a season
(47).
She was named to the All SEKC Team, All
51st District Team, and All 13th Region
Team all four years of her high school career.
As a senior in 1998 she was named the 13th
Region Player of the Year, was named to the
Kentucky All-State Team, and was a member
of the East Kentucky All-Star Team. In 1997
and 1998, April helped lead the Lady Cats to
back-to-back 13th Region Tournament
championships for the first time in the
school’s history. After her high school ca-
reer, she signed to
attend Union Col-
lege.
At Union, April
started all four years
at catcher and fin-
ished her career
there with a .305
batting average. She
was the first player
in program history
to hit two home runs
in a single game
(April 16, 2002),
and set several other
offensive records at
Union. April still
holds the program
record for highest
slugging percentage
in a single season
(.644 in 2002). April
was named to the
All Mid-South Conference Team in 1999
and 2002.
April graduated from Union College in 2002
with a degree in Education. She served four
years as an assistant softball coach, and
seven years as an assistant basketball coach
at Bell County. April lives in Pineville with
her husband, Jason Lankford. She just fin-
ished her 12th year of teaching in the Bell
County School System where she teaches
special education.
She joins coach J. W. Campbell, who was in-
ducted in 2008, as the only representatives
from our immediate area in the Kentucky
Prep Softball Hall of Fame.

RICHMOND, Ky. – Former Eastern Ken-
tucky University men’s basketball player
Marcus Lewis was drafted by the Harlem
Globetrotters. Lewis capped his EKU career
by winning the 2014 Denny’s College Slam
Dunk Championship in
April.
The Globetrotters drafted
six athletes in their eighth an-
nual player drafter. While
Lewis was the first player
chosen, other draftees in-
cluded Landon Donovan,
Johnny Manziel and Sim
Bhullar. Donovan is one of
the most highly-decorated
soccer players in U.S. his-
tory. Manziel, the former
quarterback at Texas A&M,
has now been drafted by the NFL, Major
League Baseball and the Harlem Globetrot-
ters. The 7-foot-5 Bhullar won two confer-
ence tournament MVP awards while playing
at New Mexico State.
Lewis, a 6-foot-4 guard, will have the
opportunity to attend a mini-camp/tryout in
August where he can earn an invitation to the
team’s training camp in late September. The
Globetrotters’ domestic tour begins Dec. 26
and runs through April.
The Streamwood, Illinois native left
Colonel fans in awe with his spectacular
dunks during his two seasons in maroon and
white. Lewis earned a spot in the Slam Dunk
Championship by winning the 2014 “State
Farm Dark Horse Dunker” Facebook com-
petition, a 16-player bracket-style elimina-
tion competition. His alley-oop dunk during
the 2012-13 season at Southeast Missouri
climbed to No. 3 on ESPN’s SportsCenter
Top-10 Plays, was a finalist for GEICO Play
of the Year and advanced to the finals of the
HoopsManefesto.com Dunk
of the Year Tournament.
Lewis averaged 9.8 points
and 1.6 steals per game his
senior season. He shot 51
percent from the field and 32
percent from behind the arc.
He earned a degree in gen-
eral studies/health sciences in
May.
The Globetrotters’ one-of-
a-kind show is unrivaled in
the world of family entertain-
ment, showcasing some of
the finest athletes on the planet and some of
the greatest basketball ever seen. The Glo-
betrotters represent 88 years of breaking
down barriers, acts of goodwill, and a com-
mitment to fans that goes beyond the game.
The team searches the four corners of the
world to find superb athletes with a flair for
entertainment who are also able spread joy
and goodwill outside of the athletic arena,
via the Globetrotters’ numerous ambassado-
rial efforts.
EKU nearly upset No. 2 seed Kansas in
the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tour-
nament, leading the Jayhawks with 8:55 left
in the game and trailing by only three with
3:39 to go. Eastern finished the season with
a 24-10 record, the second most wins in pro-
gram history.

voting by the league’s athletics directors,
SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced
on Tuesday.
“AJ and Hannah are true examples of out-

have competed at the highest level of colle-
giate athletics, and through their hard work,
dedication and commitment to excellence,
have been successful in their endeavors.
They are fine representatives of their univer-
