RIFLE CLUB

From Brian Davis : We had veryconsistent conditions for the monthlyNRA High Power Rifle Match: 33 to 35degrees, light wind, solid overcast. ForNorth Texas slingshooters, this was agood day to shoot if you didn’t mindwearing gloves. The spring that openedup on the southeast corner of the range isstill making mud. Despite predictions, 8competitors line up and enjoyed a goodday at the range. One Oklahoman, oneCalifornian, one Junior, five regulars andthree newish shooter marked thisanniversary of Texas Independence in thebest way possible: by exercising ourfreedoms with like-minded people.Robert Davis won the match 479 9X outof 500 50X possible points with a 1957Model 70 Winchester bolt action rifle. This was the first time in a long time a.30 caliber has won here He had one“Clean” (100 out of 100 points) on a 600yard simulated target (we call that theLittle Target). Technical point of interest:

He shot Hornady full metal jacketbullets, not match bullets. JamesLovingier had a career day andsurprised himself by chasing Robertfor the lead. He fired 475 12X and“cleaned” the 300 yard simulatedProne Rapid target. He beat Robert inboth Prone stages plus X count and thatis not easy. James showed up for acoaching session awhile back andlearned a lot of details about shootingpositions and process. We are glad tosee him move up a couple of rungs. Our second Father/Son team, Jon andJoseph Scales, were in good spirits.Sam Aguilar, a California Marinecurrently attached to SAFB, shot hissecond match with us and improvedhis score a good bit. The rest of us shotabout our average on a cold day. Afterthe match most of us went for lunch atRapid Fire Pizza. Our next match willbe Saturday, April 6. NWTFS will

FINAL ‘LEGACY CLASS’SHARELUNKER OF 2019

Lake Leon near Abilene produced thefifth and final Toyota ShareLunker“Legacy Class” entry over 13 poundsduring the final weekend of the 2019donation season March 29. AnglerBrad Scott of Gun Barrel City caughtthe lunker bass on a plastic worm in 4feet of water. After a certified scaleweighed the fish at exactly 13.00pounds–the absolute minimumrequirement for a “Legacy Class”ShareLunker entry–Scott said he thenrealized just how significant the catchwas. ShareLunker 581 is not just thefirst “Legacy Class” lunker ever enteredin the Toyota ShareLunker programfrom Lake Leon, it is also the newpending water body record for the lake, beating the current 12.90 pound recordset in 2013. “I was going bananas, Icouldn’t concentrate on anything,”Scott said. “Ever since the program

PROTECT THE LAKESYOU LOVE

Invasive species like zebra mussels, giant salvinia and water hyacinth travelfrom lake to lake on your boat, trailerand gear. These invasive species harmnative plants, fish and animals and cost

Texas taxpayers millions of dollars.Protect the lakes you love. Clean, drainand dry before traveling from lake tolake. Keep boating, fishing andswimming fun for everyone. CLEAN:Before leaving the ramp, do a quick“walk around” inspection. Remove anyplants, mud, and other debris from theboat, anchor, trailer and gear. DRAIN:Drain your boat, motor, bait buckets andother water-retaining compartments.Keep your drain plug out until the boatis dry. DRY: Let your boat dry for aweek or more before visiting anotherlake. Leave all compartments open andgear out to air dry. If you aren’t able todry it this long, wash everythingthoroughly with high-pressure water ata carwash or at home. Be vigilant! The3 biggest risks for spreading invasivespecies are: Invasive plants stuck ontrailers or trapped between the boat andbunks. Microscopic Zebra musselshiding in water not drained from boats

and gear. Zebra mussels attached towet-slipped boats that are moved toanother lake. If you find zebramussels attached to your boat or havestored your boat on a lake that haszebra mussels, you are at high risk ofspreading them to a new lake. Call(512) 389-4848 for guidance onhaving the boat decontaminated toreduce this risk. PROTECTYOURSELF FROM A CITATION.Transporting invasive species orleaving a public water body withoutremoving plants and draining all waterfrom your boat and trailer is illegal.

investigation the week prior and walkedseveral miles along the creek until hediscovered a boat that was tied up andunattended in a very remote part of thecreek. After a quick inspection of theboat, he believed it was possibly beingused to run hoop nets. The wardensdevised a plan to enter the propertybefore daylight, ahead of a forcastedheavy rain event, to catch the subjectsin the act. After lying in wait for over6 hours, the wardens heard the subjectsarrive by vehicle and get in their boatthat was still tied up on the creek. Afterthey emptied one hoop net upstream, they returned to check a netdownstream that just happened to beright in front of the wardens hiding spot. The subjects were captured on videoremoving fish from their nets and thelook on their face when they werecaught was “priceless.” Two hoop netsand 35 catfish were seized and severalcharges for taking fish by illegal meansand possessing hoop nets in prohibitedwaters were filed.

DUG HIMSELF INTO A HOLE

Houston County Game Wardens werewatching bank fishermen on the TrinityRiver near the Lock and Dam when theyobserved a fisherman pull in his stringerand remove a white bass. Thefisherman then cut off a large portionof the tail, baited his hook with it andreset his line in the water. He thenturned around and began digging a holeinto the side of the riverbank. Thewardens watched as the fisherman thenplaced the cut up white bass in the holeand covered it up to hide the evidenceof what he had been doing. Thewardens made contact with thefisherman and after denying evencatching a fish he finally admitted towhat he had been up to & uncoveredthe buried white bass. He was chargedfor using game fish as bait & given awarning for waste of game. Case

pending.
