RESIDENT’’S LETTER Our November guest speaker was Liz Harding with VMLC. She updated us on their ESL program. We observed the 16 Days of Activism from Nov 25 –Dec 10.

While we did not have a meeting in December we did have a fun holiday gathering! Lisa Graubard graciously opened her home to us Dec 2, 2:00–5:00 pm for fellowship and holiday cheer! What a great way to kick the holiday season into high gear! Thanks Lisa! Lileen and Jeremy were married on Christmas Eve!!! Best wishes to both.

Elizabeth organized a FUN field trip to the DMA for us with the girls from OUR FRIENDS PLACE. Congratulations to Sharon Martin, who as the new Director of University Park Library enjoyed her grand opening festivities. Y’all need to see this new library! Lot of very cool high tech stuff!!! Please welcome Carolin Franz, a fellow Zontian from Erlangen, Germany. Carolin, who is employed by Siemens, will be working in Plano for the next two years. We are lucky to have her joining us while she is in Texas! No meeting for February to focus on our Amelia Earhart luncheon. Make sure you have the Amelia luncheon on your calendar!! Saturday, February 16th!All are encouraged to attend this event.

November 10 has been declared by Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy on Education, as Malala Day to encourage action for Malala

and 32 million girls around the world who are denied the right to education. Zonta members may sign the petition from the NOV

ZI newsletter or go directly to www.iammalala.org. Women aged 15-44 are more at risk of domestic or sexual violence than they

are of cancer, car accidents, war or malaria. On November 25, the world marked the International Day for the Elimination of

Violence against Women, a day recognizing the fact that women are often targeted by violence based solely on their gender. This

violence crosses cultures, communities and countries, devastates lives, fractures families and communities, and stalls

development. People around the world are participating in the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence Campaign, which runs

through December 10, to encourage women and men around the world to take strategic and organized action to eradicate

violence against women. Watch This: Watch and share what the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women has accomplished

since 1996. Together we can ensure that every woman and girl can live a life free of violence. To learn more, please visit

Council of Europe United Nations World Health Organization Ending violence against women and girls is on everyone’s mind, in

the wake of the horrific gang rape of a 23 year old Indian student in Delhi. Citizens have mobilized around the world, the media

has finally put a spotlight on the issue, and governments are rising up to commit national actions. We want the world to know and

support what you’re doing to end violence against women and girls. From 4 to 15 March, governments and activists are coming

together at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York to discuss strategies to end this pandemic.

Say NO – UNiTE will highlight key actions, events and campaigns on addressing various forms of violence against women and girls.

In October, over 10,000 CARE activists urged Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to protect girls by keeping them in school, and out of dangerous child marriages.

Secretary Clinton responded by unveiling new initiatives that would help empower girls. It's a great first step, but one that still leaves too many innocent young

women to a grim future. Click here to tell Secretary Clinton that every girl deserves a fair shot – and urge her to make more significant commitments to help girls

all over the world.

DIRE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS CONTINUES More than 18 million people in the Sahel are still affected by the food crisis gripping the region. Women and children under

the age of two are the most vulnerable. The rainy season finally arrived, but in many places rain simply brought new misery. In Niger, heavy downpours caused an

outbreak of water-borne diseases like cholera and triggered flash flooding that displaced thousands of families and devastated farms already hard-hit by the drought

and food shortages. To date, CARE has helped over 750,000 people in the Sahel region – distributing food and water, giving farmers seeds and tools to cultivate the

land, giving nutritional support to women who are breastfeeding, and supporting long-term projects that reduce their vulnerability to crises in the future.

IN SYRIA, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate by the day. Violence is spreading unchecked and safe zones are disappearing. There is no end in sight.

Thanks to the support of people like you, CARE continues to provide emergency assistance to refugee families, with a particular focus on families led by women,

the elderly, the disabled, and new arrivals. CARE is also scaling up programs to help refugees deal with the bitterly cold winter in Jordan by distributing

supplementary cash, blankets, heaters, and mattresses to keep families warm.

a day to take action to end violence against women and girls.

Zonta Dallas makes food bank donations to THE FAMILY PLACE. This is Gloria at Family Place who opened the door for Lileen for her numerous trips unloading Zonta's donations.

Our October meeting is our annual Service meeting where we distribute the funds raised from the previous club year. Projects this year are: Mosaic - provides education for immigrants and refugees to help them lead self-sufficient lives. We will be funding and volunteering in 2012-2013. Our Friends Place – includes the Transitional Living Center – we gave them $3500 this year for last year’s award. We will be funding and volunteering in 2012-2013. Family Place – help victims and prevention of domestic violence, date rape and bullying – they need money for food. We are selling Partners Cards for Family Place as our service and donating canned goods. Attitudes in Attire – help women who are entering and re-entering the workplace by helping provide them with professional clothing, purses, etc. We will give service hours. Le Tot – gave them $3500 this year for last year’s award. We will provide books. Remember to sign-up for Our Friends Place - Transitional Living Center Groups for service.

In October, 15-year-old Malala Yousafzai

was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman. Malala's crime? She wanted to

go to school, and ran a campaign in Pakistan to help girls gain access to

education. Malala has been an activist for years -- when she was 11, she

worked as an anonymous blogger for the BBC to expose her Taliban-ruled

area of Pakistan. Now, even as she recovers from being shot in the head,

Malala says, "All I want is an education. And I'm afraid of no one."

In response to Malala's extraordinary courage, people all over the world are

calling for her to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Bonnie Lloyd, a

professor of sociology in Rochester, New York, started a petition on

Change.org asking Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza

Rice to nominate Malala for the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Peace

Prize has been used for decades to bring global attention to important issues,

from landmines to apartheid to the US civil rights movement. Bonnie

believes the time is right to focus on girls being denied the right to go to

school, and honoring Malala's bravery is a great way to do that.

"The hopes and dreams of girls throughout the world are no longer hidden –

yet there is much to do, as Malala’s wounds attest," Bonnie says about her

petition. "By nominating Malala Yousafzai, these global leaders will send

a clear message: We stand with Malala and with girls everywhere in their

fight for the right to equal opportunity through education."

As two of the highest ranking women in the history of US government, a

nomination for Malala from Secretaries Clinton and Rice would be a strong

signal to the global community that Malala's fight is important to people in

the US. Secretary Clinton has responded to petitions on Change.org before –

in 2011 she publicly declared support for Saudi women's right to drive for

the first time and credited a Change.org petition. Take a stand to support

Malala and girls all over the world who just want to go to school.

ADVOCACY: It takes about two minutes to go to

www.senate.gov and www.house.gov to connect with our

Senators & Congressmen to act on these 3 issues: VAWA &

SJ39 & TVPRA The ERA has never been ratified? Exercise

your rights as a citizen! Let your voice be heard!

VAWA - Violence Against Women Act remains at a

stalemate. Both the Senate and House passed a version.

However, no action has been taken in over five months to

reconcile these bills.

SJ39 - The bill to eliminate any deadline for ratification of

the Equal Rights Amendment is currently in the Senate

Committee of the Judiciary. It has 17 co-sponsors. The only

D10 co-sponsor is Mary Landrieu from Louisiana.

TVPRA Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act -

Currently in the Senate Committee of the Judiciary with 57

co-sponsors. The D10 co-sponsors are Mary Landrieu from

Louisiana, Mark Pryor from Arkansas, and Kay Hutchison

from Texas. Please, take action on these three important

issues. Contact both your representatives and yours

senators regarding VAWA and urge them to work toward

reconciliation. Contact your senators about both SJ39 and

TVPRA and encourage them to co-sponsor if they haven't

done so yet.

DALLAS JUNIOR POLICE has a

new class coming up. February 9, 2013 is our first ADVANCED class. It is for students in the 8th, 9th, and 10th grade. It will be held at Dallas Police Headquarters and has a totally new agenda - very exciting plans. The application can be found at dallaspolice.net. Classes fill up quickly. March 30, 2013 is our regular class for 4th-7th grade students held at the Academy. Applications will be online in late February. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please forward the application to them. This class should be terrific!

AT OUR NOVEMBER CLUB MEETING: On Friday, November 2nd our speaker was Liz Harling, Adult Program Director, with VMLC (aka Vickery Meadows). She has been teaching basic literacy since 1996 and ESL to adults since 2004. She has experience training ESL volunteers and received certification from ProLiteracy's Training of Trainers Program. She also coauthored articles on adult ESL education for the Texas Adult & Family Literacy Quarterly. Ms. Harling has been a long-time volunteer in the Richardson Independent School District, where she piloted a Mothers' ESL program. Prior to her teaching career, Mrs. Harling practiced law for thirteen years. She received her B.A. from Newcomb College of Tulane University and her J.D. from Loyola University in New Orleans.

episode 109 and returned this season. So far she has been booked for episodes 202, 204, 205, 206, & 209 this season as a

featured background actor. When asked about one of her funniest experiences so far on set she said,” I was sitting next to

#LARRY HAGMAN when he turned to me and said – hey, we’re working together, how bout a fist bump - so we did. #PATRICK

DUFFY and the new hottie JESSIE were sitting in front of me and #LINDA GREY and the other hottie JOSH were sitting behind

me. Larry suddenly says –hey this seat is hard, I need a pillow, - then he looks at me and says – do you need a pillow too? – to

which Iquickly said - no thanks mine are built in! - Suddenly they all were rolling on the floor laughing. We all had a great time!”

Here’s hoping for more episodes and bigger parts to come. BEST OF ALL, THE DIRECTOR ON EPISODE 205 WAS A WOMAN! YAY!

Thank you so much for the outing to the Dallas Museum of Art for the young women at Our Friends Place Transitional Living Center. Thanks to Elizabeth Simon for taking the lead on this, for getting all of the young women in for free, and for giving everyone an overview of the DMA. Thanks to Barbara Gibbons for sharing her tickets and enthusiasm for the DMA with all. Thanks to Kaleta Doolin and Alan Govenar for participating and sharing their knowledge. Thanks to Mary Anne Redmond for participating and connecting with our young women as they explored the museum. WE MET OUR GOAL – The young women at the TLC had a new and different experience through visiting the DMA. Our young women did not even know this treasure existed, and as of today, they can visit any time for free. Sunday 25 November marked the start of the 16 Days of

Activism against Gender Violence, a campaign promoted by

the UN worldwide. We encourage you to recognize this time

and use the tools available to promote the message of ending

violence everywhere. Zonta has chosen this focus for a

worldwide pr campaign. We're pleased to announce the Zonta

Says NO campaign, a campaign to end violence against women and girls.

Read in the ZI newsletters for more information about the campaign and ways

you can participate and promote this important initiative.

As we start 2013, I want to encourage you all to look forward to the impact

we will make over the next year, and also look back and remember some

important members of our organization. From 3-15 March, the 2013

Commission on the Status of Women again takes place in New York City.

You can find more information on the event, as well as parallel events Zonta

International will host (Wednesday 6th), in the e-Newsletter. January is Amelia

Earhart month- a former Zontian who pushed boundaries and who we

acknowledge annually in January and with our Amelia Earhart Fellowships

(35 per year). Share with us how you celebrated Amelia Earhart by sending

your story to the website. In addition to these items, this edition of the e-

Newsletter includes updates on advocacy efforts and the Centennial

Anniversary Committee. From 1 February until 10 February, I will be in

Rwanda visiting Zonta's project there. Two Finnish Zontians will be joining

me to see the impact of their district's donation to Rwanda in the name of

former PIP Helvi Sipilä. Follow us on Facebook, our website and other social

Finally, I'd like to share some good news with you regarding membership.

We continue to lose members, but the rate of our loss is decreasing and

resignations are lower than before. Additionally, the number of new and

reinstated members is increasing. Thanks to your efforts to share the Zonta

experience and recruit new members, we are seeing positive results. Keep up

the good work! Thank you again for your service. As we transition into this

new year and take time to think about how we can make more of an impact

internationally and remember those before us who helped get us here, I hope

you can look toward a brighter future for the lives of women and girls all over

the world. Thank you for all of your efforts to advance the status of women

worldwide!

Commission on the Status of

Women 2013 The fifty-seventh session

of the Commission on the Status of

Women (CSW) will take place at United

Nations Headquarters in New York from 4

to 15 March 2013. This year's priority

theme is the elimination and prevention of

all forms of violence against women and

girls. The review theme is the equal

sharing of responsibilities between women

and men, including care giving in the

context of HIV/AIDS. The emerging issue

of the session is yet to be determined.

Zontians who are interested in attending

CSW can continue to check the CSW

website for more information. You can also

International Service

Committee 2012-2014 This

biennium, the ZI Service Committee will hold an

annual service competition. The best service

projects will be recognized at the 2014 Zonta

International Convention in Orlando, Florida. More

information about the Service Committee and its

plans for the 2012-2014 Biennium can be found in

the Service Committee Letter.

Zonta International pledges support

to end preventable childhood deaths

Zonta International has added its name to

the "A Promised Renewed" pledge - a

global effort, coordinated by UNICEF, to

end preventable child deaths. By signing

this pledge, we are reaffirming our

commitment to achieving the Millennium

Development Goals to reduce newborn,

child and maternal deaths. This is a great

opportunity for us to demonstrate our

commitment to achieving the Millennium

Development Goals and to reducing the

number of preventable child deaths. All

Zonta districts, clubs and members are to
