Octogenarian artist Martin Brignac built his first house when he wasa boy of 13. The year was 1935. He didn’t need to fill out any forms –this was before Social Security, Medicare and FICA – all he neededwas his mother’s permission.

“There was a fellow in the neighborhood, he was 20 and getting mar-ried,” Brignac said. “I remember when he came and asked my mamaif I could build his house.”

The plain frame house, located at the corner of Seneca and SorrelStreets in the old Standard Heights neighborhood in Baton Rouge, wasapproximately 22’ by 32’.

Nearly 80 years later Brignac remembered that house and built anartistic 20” by 30” threedimensional replica ofthat home.

It wasn’t the first pieceof 3-D art Brignac creat-ed. He saved that honorfor his mother’s home.

He pointed to the beau-tifully colored anddetailed rendering of theold-fashioned househanging on the wall of hispresent-day Baton Rougehome.

Brignac has magnifi-cently re-created the grayslate roof and singledormer window above the

gray-painted porch. A swing hangs under the porch and a tiny signoffering Mrs. Brignac’s sewing service is attached to the front porchpillar.

“That’s 2510 Daisy Avenue off Choctaw Road way down there inStandard Heights,” Brignac said. “The house is all tore down now, butmy sister had the picture and she said somebody ought to be able tocreate it.”

Martin Brignac, continued from page 12“I keep going and do whatever I can at the church. I’m always doingsomething at the church.”

He took on the assignment to carve the 7-foot crucifix at St. PatrickCatholic Church in 2004.

“They asked me to do the tree (the cross),” Brignac said. “Aftertwo weeks I asked them if they had found the corpus for the cross. Itold them I thought I could do it. I made a smaller model of the faceand they said have at it.”

What made Brignac, at age 83, think he could carve a beautifulrendering of Christ on the cross? It was the old Martin Brignac “I cando anything” mentality.

“I never carved anything,” Brignac said. “I worked in cabinetshops in my time coming up. I built the dormer windows of theGovernor’s Mansion. I built the bow windows and most of thecurved work. You want to make a nice smooth curve.

“I just was adept at doing that stuff.”Brignac feels his real work has just begun.“As long as the good Lord keeps me alive, why shouldn’t I give

this back? It makes people feel good and they appreciate it.”Brignac has had several showings of his plantation miniatures and

makes them accessible for public and private viewings. For moreinformation, contact Brignac at 225-925-5894.

Brignac prefers to work at his kitchen table to fashion thetiny fence posts, bricks and other building materials forhis architectural art.

News from ArkansasFarmer Idea Award goes to Ark. inventor

James Simpson of Cave Springs,Arkansas, vice president of BentonCounty Farm Bureau, earned thegrand prize in the national FarmerIdea Exchange competition at the2008 American Farm BureauFederation’s 89th annual conven-tion held in New Orleans.

Simpson’s invention, the doublebale spike, allows a large tractor tomove three round bales of hay, instead of the usual two bales, at atime. Two spikes are placed on therear of a tractor with a front loader, a50-percent increase in productivity.

“I’m shocked. I’m pleased,”Simpson said. “If I’d gone homewithout the award, there would beno regrets. I’ve had a really good

time here visiting with people.”Simpson won a year’s use of a

New Holland TV-145 bidirectionaltractor. New Holland has provideda year’s free use of a tractor to thegrand prize winner for 18 of the 19years the program has existed.

“I do have a working farm andthere’s always a spot there for atractor,” Simpson said.

In addition, Simpson’s inventionwas recognized as the “most cost-effective” entry in the competition, earning him an additional $500 forwinning that category. At current fuelprices, the fuel savings alone pays forthe investment in tubing and scrapmetal to make the double spike.

Simpson was one of twoArkansans invited to exhibit at theAmerican Farm BureauConvention.

Charles Adamson of Forrest City(St. Francis County) was recog-nized as a finalist for his inventionof a Cattle Working Chute StopGate, a device which allows him toload and work cattle in a chute byhimself.

News from TexasTDA quarantines 32 counties to prevent spread of citrus psyllids

The Texas Department of Agriculture hasquarantined 32 counties to prevent thespread of the Asian citrus psyllid, an insectthat is capable of transmitting citrus green-ing, a disease in citrus plants that does notexist in Texas.

Psyllids have been detected in the follow-ing 32 quarantined counties: Aransas,Atascosa, Bee, Bexar, Brazoria, Brooks,Caldwell, Cameron, Dimmit, Duval, Harris,Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Kennedy,Kleberg, Live Oak, Matagorda, Maverick,McMullen, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio,Starr, Uvalde, Val Verde, Victoria, Waller,Washington, Webb, Willacy and Zapata.

Nurseries and other citrus producers/sell-ers in the quarantined areas must enter acompliance agreement with TDA thatrequires a treatment plan for all psyllid hostplants (primarily citrus plants) prior to sell-

ing and exportingto other countieswithin the state.Businesses thatship citrus plants toother states willneed to contactUSDA.

While the Asiancitrus psyllid posesabsolutely no threatto human health, its potential as a carrier ofcitrus greening is a cause for precautionaryaction. Citrus greening also poses absolute-ly no threat to human health, but is harmfulto citrus fruit and plants. Citrus fruit in thequarantined areas and across Texas remainssafe to eat. Still, TDA is taking a proactiveapproach to curtail the possible spread ofthe pest and the disease.

“The TexasDepartment ofAgriculture andUSDA are imple-menting precau-tions to ensure con-tainment of the cit-rus psyllids, whichwill minimize thechances of citrusgreening being

introduced and spread within the state,”said Texas Agriculture Commissioner ToddStaples.

Texas is the second-largest state in grape-fruit production and the third leading statein orange production, with about 28,295acres in commercial citrus production in theRio Grande Valley. The primary citruscounties are Cameron, Hidalgo and

Willacy.“With a statewide economic impact of

more than $160 million, our citrus industryis a vital part of the agricultural economyand the economy of the Rio Grande Valley,”Commissioner Staples said. “It is importantto remember citrus greening does not existin Texas, and our oranges and grapefruit aresafe to eat and safe for domestic and exportshipments. TDA will aggressively workwith USDA and our industry partners toprotect our vital citrus industry.”

For the past year Texas A&M researchershave been conducting surveys across thestate looking for citrus greening. To date, more than 1,200 citrus samples have beencollected in Texas, all returning negativeresults. More than 1,100 samples collectedby TDA in the citrus counties were alsonegative for the disease.

Page 12: VOL. 91, No. 3 January 31, 2008 ...Jan 31, 2008  · when he built that Standard Heights home for his newlywed neighbor. He had to do fieverythingfl ever since his father died when

seven.“I was the oldest boy of six chil-

dren,” Brignac said. “By the time Iwas 13, I not only built that house,I wired my mother’s house to putl i g h ts w i t c h e sin the wallto turn onthe lightsinstead offumblingfor thestring pullchain.

“I didn’tknow if Ic o u l dbuild thathouse ornot, I justwent anddid it.

W h e nthe fellowcame andasked mymother if Icould do itshe saidyeah because she saw I did all kindof things around the house.

“I was fixing the kid’s bicycles. Ihad the know-how and a reputationas the fix-it boy in the neighbor-hood.”

After Brignac so lovingly builtthe 3-D model of his family home

and other neighborhood residenceshe turned his attention and consid-erable talent to recreating eight ofLouisiana’s most famous planta-tions.

At firstB r i g n a c

took photographs of the antebellumhomes and crafted a scale drawingof the building.

“I had to measure everything andbring it up to scale,” he said. “Itwould take two or three weeks justto make the drawing.”

It wasn’t long before Brignac

experienced the joy of Kinko’s andlearned he could blow up a scalephotograph up to scale.

Using balsa wood, a variety ofExacto blades and tiny clamps,Brignac found the process of build-ing in miniature just as demandingand fulfilling as constructing a full-sized house.

He quickly recognized that hislong experience in home buildingwould aid him with the productionof his tiny masterpieces, which cantake up to three months to assem-ble.

“My training helped me with theshort cuts,” Brignac said. “When Imeasure stuff here I know thetricks how to multiply it out.”

Using paint and a number ofhigh-quality paint brushes, Brignacis able to recreate the look and tex-ture of the old plantation homes.

Illustrating brick work gave himtrouble, however.

“I figured I would just paint withwatercolors for the bricks,”Brignac said.

The problem?“Watercolored painted brickwork

looks just like watercolors. Whatcould I do to make the brick detailslook more like brick? I got thiswild idea in my head that the bestway to make brick was to usebrick,” he said.

Brignac simply chipped a pieceof brick from the masonry andcrushed it into fine particles. Heapplied glue to the material sur-face, then uses salt and peppershakers to sift the brick dust ontothe sticky facade.

“You can get the exact color ofthe brick,” Brignac said. “I can usea razor to cut the units. Instead ofhaving one little piece at a time, Ican take these things and offsetthem and it makes it look just likeyou’re stacking bricks.”

At 86, Brignac has only sloweddown slightly. He’s thin, but he wasalways lean.

“I guess you can stay slim fromswinging a hammer,” Brignac said.

Brignac built the crucifix at St. Patrick Catholic Church inBaton Rouge and earned the chance to carve the Christ corpusafter he whittled a smaller model that pleased the church selec-tion committee.

Brignac uses real brick to fabricate miniature bricks in hismodels (above). He built models of homes from his past, includ-ing the frame house (below, far right) he built at age 13 in 1935.
