The Ford Mustang has addedyet another award to its trophycase – Women’s Performance Carof the Year 2016.Up against a field of 294 com-
petitors, Mustang emerged as thetop performance car in theWomen’s World Car of the Yearawards, said Ford spokesmanDan Jones. The awards are determined by
17 judges across 14 countries –the only vehicle honors in theworld granted by a panel madeup entirely of women.Mustang’s closest contender
was the critically acclaimed FordFocus RS, with just one pointseparating the two, Jones said. The 2016 Mustang was creat-
ed, in part, Jones said, by a groupof women. They included Susan
Lampinen, Ford Chief Color andMaterials designer, MelanieBanker, Ford Mustang Marketingmanager, Michele Lubin Henning,Ford Vehicle Integration supervi-sor, and Marcy Fisher, Ford Vehi-cle Line director. The judges posted opinions
about the Mustang on theWomen’s World Car of the YearFacebook page.“Ford Mustang is surprisingly
loved by women who are after asexy, sporty, masculine car thatturns heads,” said Juliet Potter,Women’s World Car of the Yearjury member from Australia.“Combining the car’s silver-
screen celebrity status with real-life practicality, Mustangscreams, ‘I am in control!’ and de-livers the same behind the wheelwith above-average grip and sus-
pension. The Mustang is a truejoy to drive.”
Maggie Barry of Scotland andMotoring editor, Media Scotland(including Daily Record and Sun-day Mail), also had kind things tosay about the Mustang.“I think we had a really good
lineup of winning cars this yearfrom the practical to the utterlydesirable,” Barry said. “I love thelook and sound of the Mustang –it's just so gutsy ...”Marta Garcia Fernandez of
Spain, motoring editor for Quomagazine, said that the Mustangwas an iconic car that takes itsheritage as a classic muscle carseriously, but the Mustang alsocomes with advanced techno-logy and has a very good rela-tionship between power andprice.Odiel Menink is from Holland
and is the founder and test editor
for autoblog Femme Frontaal, which gives the female perspec-tive on cars. She wrote that the “new Ford
Mustang is the most playful rear-wheel-drive car out there. Notonly with the V8, but even withthe four-cylinder Ford Mustang, you are driving in a bucket full offun.“The Ford Mustang is really a
good-looking statement car. Onewith room for four people and inmost countries also affordable.”
Geraldine Herbert of Ireland isthe motoring correspondent forIrish Country Magazine and a con-tributing editor for The SundayIndependent.
This is what Herbert had tosay about the 2016 Mustang:
“It may have taken more than50 years to find out, but it seemsMustangers really do have morefun.”

“F IRST IN THE HEAR T OF DETROIT”
The year was a busy one.In 2016, automobile products
that had been talked about foryears finally became a reality.GM’s Chevrolet Bolt EV, Fiat
Chrysler’s hybrid minivan Pacifi-ca and Ford’s technology-loadedEscape made the headlines.Other major newsmakers were
autonomous vehicles, the Volks-wagen diesel emission scandaland the Takata airbag debacle.Dan Nicholson, vice president
of Global Propulsion Systems atGeneral Motors, talked about theChevy Bolt making it to market.“The Bolt is the first mass-pro-
duced EV with the ability to trav-el distances so it eliminates theproblem of driver range anxiety,”Nicholson said. And, Nicholson said, the Bolt
hit the marketplace two years be-fore Tesla’s Model 3. That Califor-nia automaker began taking or-ders for the vehicle in April, de-spite the fact that it told poten-tial buyers the vehicle won’t beready to be sold until late 2017 atthe earliest. The Bolt was first unveiled as a
concept car at the 2015 NorthAmerican International AutoShow. GM began testing 50 Boltprototypes at GM’s Milford Prov-ing Ground the following June.GM CEO Mary Barra an-
nounced in January of 2016 atthe Consumers Electronics Show(CES) that GM was putting theBolt into production.“The message from consumers
about the Bolt EV concept wasclear and unequivocal: Build it,”
said Alan Batey, president of GMNorth America, at the ChicagoAuto Show in March.GM delivered the first Bolts to
customers on the West Coast justa couple of weeks ago, meaningthe car went from concept to re-ality in less than two years. But GM wasn’t the only compa-
ny making strides in green tech-nology in 2016. Fiat Chrysler in-troduced the world’s first hybridminivan to the marketplace. The 2017 Hybrid Pacifica be-
gan production at Windsor As-sembly in early December. The vehicle made its debut at
the 2016 NAIAS. Patrick Keitz, product manager for the 2017Pacifica, said the announcementwas made in Detroit becausethat’s where the minivan was cre-ated.“What’s great about the Hybrid
Pacifica is that we didn’t have tosacrifice interior space to makethe vehicle possible,” Keitz saidat the time of its introduction.“We put the batteries in the
stow-and-go space below theseats so people don’t lose cargospace. Thus, the Pacifica still hasbest-in-class interior cargospace.”The pivotal technology
behind the new Chrysler PacificaHybrid is its innovative electri-cally variable transmission(EVT), Keitz said. Patented byFiat Chrysler, the device fea-tures two electric motors, which are both capable of

Mustang Power Attracts Women’s Praise
People may be dreaming abouta white Christmas, but GM isproud of its green year.General Motors achieved a
record number of landfill-freefacilities in 2016, exceeding itscommitment four years early, said GM spokeswoman BeckyPrice. The Detroit automaker now
operates 152 global facilities thatrecycle, reuse or convert to ener-gy all waste from daily opera-tions.These 52 non-manufacturing
sites and 100 manufacturing sitescontribute to GM’s top and bot-tom lines by driving efficiencies, generating revenue and savingmoney, Price said.“We are committed to manu-
facturing cars and trucks for ourcustomers in a safe and responsi-ble way,” said Alicia Boler-Davis,GM executive vice president,Global Manufacturing.“While we continue to increase
the reuse of byproducts, ourvision is to eliminate waste byapplying the most advancedmanufacturing processes andtechnologies in our plantsglobally.”Whether it’s recycling Flint
water bottles into engine coverinsulation or turning trashedtires from the Mississippi Riverinto air-deflecting baffles, thecompany is working togetherwith its suppliers to advance amore circular economy wherematerials are kept in use, Boler-Davis said.
GM champions matchmakingefforts, such as the MaterialsMarketplace, where one compa-ny’s trash can be another’s rawmaterial.Altogether, GM recycles or
reuses 2 million metric tons ofbyproducts a year. If someonewere to place that material intothe beds of Chevrolet Silveradoextended-cab pickup trucks andpark them end to end, theywould stretch around the world.GM has generated up to $1 bil-
lion from recycling in recentyears, Price said. The companyreinvests that money into thebusiness, including the develop-ment of fuel-efficient vehiclesand new technologies shapingthe future of personal mobility.Landfill-free facilities result ingreater operational efficiencyand eliminate waste-hauling fees.

driving the vehicle’s wheels.Green innovations weren’t the
only technologies reachingfruition in 2016.Alisa Priddle, editor of the De-
troit bureau of Motor Trend maga-zine, said that 2016 was the yearthat driver assistance, some-times referred to as autonomoustechnology, became a reality.“This tech really took off in
2016,” Priddle said. “Companiesreally invested in ride safety andthat technology has becomestandard in a lot of vehicles. Talkbecame reality.”Ford, for instance, in January
announced that the 2017 Es-cape’s available features wouldinclude:• Adaptive Cruise Control with
Collision Warning and Brake Sup-port: Sensors detect when Es-cape is approaching a slow-mov-ing vehicle and adjusts cruisecontrol accordingly;• Enhanced Active Park As-
sist: Provides automatic steeringassistance to park the vehicle ina parallel or perpendicular park-ing spot, and pull out from tightparallel parking spots;• Lane-Keeping System: The
system includes lane-keeping as-sist, which alerts drivers whenthey drift unintentionally fromtheir lane, and lane-keep aid, which provides steering assis-tance to guide an unintentionallydrifting vehicle back in its lane;• Driver Alert System: Using
data from the lane-keeping sys-tem, Driver Alert detects signs offatigued driving and provides awarning on the instrument clus-ter.In September, Ford accelerated
its autonomous vehicle researchat the new robotics lab at theUniversity of Michigan. As a re-sult of this, Ford became the firstcompany to co-locate in an aca-
demic building as its engineersworked side-by-side with U-M re-searchers.In early December, the state of
Michigan passed legislation thatgreatly increased the ability ofcompanies to test autonomousvehicles on public roads. The Associated Press wrote,
“companies can now test self-dri-ving cars on Michigan publicroads without a driver or steer-ing wheel under new laws thatcould push the state to the fore-front of autonomous vehicle de-velopment.“The package of bills signed
into law Dec. 9 comes with fewspecific state regulations andleaves many decisions up toautomakers and companies likeGoogle and Uber.“It also allows automakers and
tech companies to run autono-mous taxi services and permitstest parades of self-driving trac-tor-trailers as long as humans arein each truck. And they allow thesale of self-driving vehicles to thepublic once they are tested andcertified, according to the state.”Within days of that announce-
ment, GM declared that the com-pany would be testing autono-mous vehicles on public roads. And Fiat Chrysler announced
that the company had completedbuilding 100 Hybrid Pacificasmeant to be outfitted with fullyself-driving technology being de-veloped by Waymo (formerlyknown as the Google Self-DrivingCar Project). These vehicles willjoin Waymo’s self-driving fleet in2017.Other issues rolled over into
2016 from 2015. The Volkswagendiesel emission scandal contin-ued to make news. In Septemberof 2015, the company admitted tomaking and installing “defeat” de-vices designed to fool emissiontests. In September, James Robert
Liang, a VW engineer whoworked in Oxnard, Calif., admit-ted as part of a plea deal with theJustice Department that the de-feat device was purposely in-stalled in VW diesels sold in theUnited States. In October, a federal judge
approved a final settlement thatrequired VW to offer to buy backabout 475,000 vehicles. The buy-back values ranged from $12,000to $44,000. The company alsoagreed to pay $2.7 billion in envi-ronmental mitigation fees andanother $2 billion for clean emis-sions infrastructure. The Takata airbag scandal also
continued in 2016. The companymakes airbags for most OEMsand, beginning in 2013, compa-nies began recalling vehicleswith Takata airbags because, under certain circumstances, airbags could deploy with somuch force that flying debriscould injure or even kill driversand passengers. In May of 2016, the National
Highway Traffic Safety Adminis-tration (NHTSA) initiated a recallcampaign affecting about 35 to40 million vehicles.
Despite these efforts, a trucktransporting Takata airbag partswas involved in a crash in Que-mado, Texas, in August. Thecrash caused the cargo to ex-plode, destroying a house andkilling a woman inside.

DETROIT (AP) – General Mo-tors will temporarily close fivefactories next month as it tries toreduce a growing inventory ofcars on dealer lots. The factories will close any-
where from one to threeweeks dueto the ongoing U.S. market shift to-ward trucks and SUVs, spokes-woman Dayna Hart said Dec. 19.Just over 10,000 workers will beidled. The company’s Detroit-Ham-
tramck factory and Fairfax As-sembly plant in Kansas City,Kan., each will be shut down forthree weeks, while a plant inLansing, will be down for twoweeks. Factories in Lordstown,Ohio, and Bowling Green, Ky.,each will be idled for one week. The factories make most cars
in the General Motors lineup in-cluding the Chevrolet Cruze, Ca-maro, Corvette, Malibu, Volt andImpala; the Cadillac CT6, CTSand ATS; and the Buick Lacrosse. At the current sales pace, GM
dealers have enough Malibus tolast for 84 days and enoughCamaros to last for 177 days, according to Ward’s Automotive.Normally, automakers like tohave a 60-day supply on lots.Last month, trucks and SUVs
made up almost 62 percent of allvehicles sold in the U.S., a recordlevel.GM, like other automakers,
was caught with too many carson dealer lots as the shift contin-ued, said Jeff Schuster, seniorvice president of forecasting forthe LMC Automotive consultingfirm. Automakers have starteddiscounting cars, but they needto cut production as the shiftcontinues, he said.“There’s nothing that suggests a
move back to cars,’’ Schuster said.He predicted strong December
sales but said it won’t be enough“to overcome some of this bloat-ing of inventory.”Buyers are snapping up SUVs
largely because they like the high
seating position and the abilityto haul things. Gasoline pricesaround $2 per gallon have helpedthe sales, but SUVs also have be-come more fuel efficient in thepast five years.GM’s inventory of vehicles on
dealer lots at the end of Novemberstood at 874,162, up 26.5 percentfrom the same time a year ago.Workers at the plants will get
company supplemental pay andunemployment benefits that addup to most of their pay.

Continental will demonstratethe intelligence of modern vehi-cle access solutions at CES 2017in Las Vegas in early January.Through the combination of
the keyless entry and start sys-tem PASE (Passive Start and En-try) and biometric elements, theinternational technology compa-ny with its North American head-quarters in Auburn Hills is open-ing up new possibilities in thefield of vehicle personalizationand authentication, said Contint-nental spokeswoman Mary Arraf.“The integration of biometric
elements brings our expertise insystems integration to the fore-front, as we are linking our ac-cess control solution with otherintelligent systems in vehicles toensure increased comfort andsafety for all passengers,” saidMichael Crane, head of Continen-
tal’s Body & Security businessunit, North America.“In addition, the access sys-
tems allow us to only controlspecific components as needed. This means that components arenot required to operate continu-ously, which saves energy andincreases efficiency.”Depending on the system con-
figuration, Crane said that auto-motive manufacturers can intro-duce another level of security totheir vehicles using biometrics.Introducing a biometric ele-
ment could mean, for example, that the presence of a valid keyinside the vehicle is no longerenough to start the engine as thedriver is also required to provideauthentication using a finger-print sensor. This process in-creases the vehicle’s anti-theftprotection measures.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) – Michi-gan Gov. Rick Snyder has signeda rewrite of state energy laws in-tended to boost the required useof renewable power sources andkeep intact some competition inthe electricity market. The Republican governor
signed the legislation Dec. 21that was approved the previousweek by the Michigan Legisla-ture with bipartisan votes. The measures long have been
among Snyder’s priorities at atime when many coal-fired pow-er plants are closing. The House GOP had been at
an impasse on an energy over-haul.Changes were made to mollify

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is avehicle built for families, whichis why safety is such an impor-tant feature.
The Pacifica is the lone mini-van among vehicles to earn a2017 Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) rat-ing from the Insurance Institutefor Highway Safety (IIHS), saidFiat Chrysler spokesman EricMayne.
The Dec. 8 announcement bythe IIHS reprises the ChryslerPacifica’s 2016 TSP+ designation, and complements the five-staroverall safety rating the Pacificaachieved in testing by the U.S.National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration.
“Every safety feature is rele-vant to every buyer,” Maynesaid, “but especially so for mini-van buyers, and recognition likethis will become an importantbuying tool for consumers look-ing for a vehicle for their fami-lies.”
“With more than 100 availablesafety and security features, everything from Forward Colli-sion Warning to a 360-degree Sur-round View Camera to the abilityto parallel park itself,” said TimKuniskis, head of Passenger CarBrands – FCA North America,“the all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifi-ca is designed and built to checkthe box on key attributes manyfamilies value above all others –safety and security.”
TSP+ status is contingent onachieving ratings of “good” infive IIHS crashworthiness evalua-tions. The Chrysler Pacificaachieves “good” – the highestpossible rating – in each. Thetests simulate:
• A side impact with a largeSUV or pickup truck;
• A moderate-offset frontal im-pact;
• A small-offset frontal impact;• Roof-deformation consistent
with a rollover; and a rear colli-sion capable of inducingwhiplash.
High-strength steel accountsfor 72 percent of the Pacifica’sbody structure, 38 percent ofwhich is Advanced High-StrengthSteel (AHSS). Such materialchoice was a key contributor tothe new minivan’s crashworthi-ness, and advanced engineeringcontributed further.
Using an in-house processcalled Rapid Concept Develop-ment (RCD), FCA US engineersemployed high-powered comput-ers to identify optimal body-structure design. The computershelp simulate vehicle perform-ance and pinpoint strategies thatbest accommodate occupantprotection.
In certain frontal impacts, these strategies include dividingcrash energy between multiplecomponents, such as frame railsand the vehicle’s engine cradle.
While the new Pacifica acesthe required crash tests, the bestsafety features are those thathelp drivers avoid collisions. TheChrysler Pacifica’s AutomaticEmergency Braking (AEB) sys-tem earns a rating of “superior,”the highest possible grade theIIHS awards for this technologyand another prerequisite toachieve TSP+ status.
The Pacifica’s system is calledForward Collision Warning-Plus.It features sensor-fusion technol-ogy, which combines the particu-lar attributes of radar sensorsand cameras for greater preci-sion.
The system only respondswhen camera and radar agreethat a frontal impact appears im-minent.

Repurposing waste into vehi-cle components or plant suppliesmeans the company doesn’thave to buy virgin material.“We view sustainability as a
business approach,” said JohnBradburn, GM global manager ofWaste Reduction.“We look at ways we can grow
and strengthen our business forthe long term, and that oftenmeans reducing our environmen-tal footprint while maximizingsocial benefit.”About a third of GM’s total
landfill-free sites are technicalcenters, warehouses and offices,Price said. While in the midst of a major
renovation at three Michiganfacilities, GM partnered withHerman Miller and Green Stan-dards to repurpose surplus of-fice assets into $1 million ofin-kind donations to about 100Michigan-based community or-ganizations.Landfill-free sites added this
year in Michigan are:• Powertrain plant in Romu-
lus;• Warehouse in Flint;• Aftersales operation in Madi-
son Heights;• Storage facility in Grand
Blanc.GM also added landfill-free
sites in Asia, Africa, North Ameri-ca and South America:• Engine, parts distribution
center and stamping operation inTalegaon, India;• Distribution center in Char-
lotte, N.C.;• Parts distribution center
and assembly plant in Quito,Ecuador;• Two assembly plants and
two distribution centers in
Port Elizabeth, South Africa;• Assembly plant in Cairo,
Egypt;• GM Canada headquarters in
Oshawa, Canada;• Foundry in Toluca, Mexico;• An assembly plant, stamping
plant, technical center, engineer-ing facility and support office inSão Caetano do Sul, Brazil;• Assembly plant in Bogota,
Colombia.With the Toluca, Mexico,
foundry now on the list – a sitethat melts and molds metal tomake auto components – none ofGM’s manufacturing operationsin Mexico send waste to landfills. All GM European Opel/Vauxhallmanufacturing plants have beenlandfill-free since 2015.
