Switching to the Being Mode

by Rabbi Rick Schechter

The Rabbi?s Reflections

Emails. Text messages. Errands. Endless to-do lists. Responsibil it ies at work and at home. Open 24/7. The breakneck speed of l ife today can be measured in nanoseconds. Sometimes, we just need to slow down f rom our hectic and hurried lives, and switch from the ?doing? mode to the ?being? mode of l iving. Catch our breaths and rediscover our lives.

The mitzvah and practice of a weekly Shabbat, or of ?Shabbat moments? as a professor of mine liked to say, helps us make the switch. Shabbat beckons each one of us to slow down and savor the life we?ve been given. During our musical celebration of Shabbat 150, I sometimes share the wise words of American author Wilferd A. Peterson. I offer them to you now as we enter summer, when hopefully the pace of our lives can slow a few steps.

Slow me down, God! Ease the pounding of my heart, by the quieting of my mind. Steady my hurried pace with the vision of the eternal reach of t ime. Give me, amidst the confusion of my day, the calmness of the everlasting hil ls. Break the tensions of my nerves and muscles with the soothing music of the singing streams that l ive in my memory. Help me to know the magical restoring power of sleep. Teach me the art of taking a minute's vacation? of slowing down to look at a f lower, to chat with a friend, to pat a dog, to read a few lines from a good book. Remind me each day of the fable of the hare and the tortoise, that I may know that the race is not always to the swift, that there is more to life than increasing its speed. Let me look upward into the branches of the towering oak tree and know that it grew great and strong because it grew slowly and well. Slow me down, God, and inspire me to send my roots deep into the soil of l ife's enduring values that I may grow toward the stars of greater destiny.

Shalom uvracha,

The President's Message

Summer Is Upon Us!

by Maggie Freed

The Temple Sinai Board is interested in hearing from the congregation regarding any issue that may concern you. Feel free to contact us as follows:

I hope you are all having a good summer ? whether vacation, staycation, short trips, long trips, or just enjoying some of the fun things to discover around Los Angeles, l ike the Bunny Museum or the Museum of Il lusions!

Our parking lot renovation is virtually complete, with beautiful new landscaping, and you may notice that we now have a bike rack for those who take their exercise more seriously than I do! Thanks to everyone for their cooperation and patience during this project.

Special thanks to past president Mike Simon for leading this effort, with help and advice from Jason Marx, Emil Mertzel, Dan Heller and Susan Hain, and with the cooperation of our tenants, the Grandview Preschool. We?ll be happy to have our social hall back, none the worse for wear by the litt le ones who?ve been using it as play space while their outdoor space is under construction.

On a completely dif ferent note, summer is a good time to catch up on your reading,

and I?d like to suggest a few Jewish-themed books that I?ve enjoyed, and that we?ve read for the temple?s book club (which meets the second Monday of each month at noon, just sayin?).

Another activity you might want to consider for you and/or your family is cooking a dinner for the Ascencia shelter in Glendale. See the article elsewhere in this issue for more information, and help brighten the summer for people who are struggling.

A Cal l to Act ion f rom Temple Member Ruth Lambert ....Dear Temple Family - as many of you know, my son Charlie was born in and adopted from Guatemala in 2002. Charlie and I have been extremely blessed in our lives together and with the wonderful, loving community that we?re a part of at Temple Sinai. Charlie is an active member of our temple and feels loved and respected by all of you. Our community matters to him.

Hundreds of children from Central America are being held in detention centers near our southern borders. They are being held in f ilthy facil it ies and are not being given beds, blankets, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, diapers, fresh food, water and comfort. Their l iving conditions are horrif ic and they need our assistance and support. This crisis goes beyond polit ics, it 's just about basic humanity.

Imagine Charlie Lambert with his dark eyes and hair and his brown skin... now imagine him in one of those camps. There but for the grace of God? .

AN AFTERWARD FROM THE RABBI -- To help these children and their families who deserve and need humane treatment, dignity, and compassion, I encourage you to research and decide if you want to support one or more of these organizations that Ruth has kindly brought to our attention. Flow er Crow ns for our Torahs for Shavuot

Once again this year we prepared beautiful f lower crowns for our Torah scrolls to help celebrate the spring/summer chag (holiday). This year congregants Leah Soltes, Linda Pillsbury, Sally Davis, Cathi Comras, and Erica Whinston, and her boys Noah, David & Solomon and I worked together to create these f loral masterpieces.

We had special help from Claire Gorf inkel and Kathy Kobayashi, both former TSG members. Kathy organized the whole event, even going to the downtown f lower market early in the morning.

Ascencia By Ruth & Mike Devine

Since joining Temple Sinai, one of our favorite family activit ies has been cooking dinner as part of the Guest Chef program at the Ascencia Homeless Shelter here in Glendale. The fact that it is on a Sunday means we can have fun cooking a meal as a family and then have a nice evening sharing it with others.

Our June Ascencia date brought with it the beginning of summer and thoughts of smoked meat and ice cream. Mike spent the day outside happily smoking brisket for delicious brisket sandwiches.

We were joined that evening with some close family friends who love to participate with us, one a college student who had just come back home from the east coast at the end of the term, so it was also a nice reunion of with some of our daughter Johanna?s friends.

We also welcomed help from Temple Sinai member Sophia Mertzel, her mom Becca and friend Anika. This was Sophia?s f irst t ime volunteering at Ascencia and hopefully not the last! She is working on her Mitzvah Project for her upcoming bat mitzvah. The girls spent a lot of t ime making a fantastic fruit salad, and amazing homemade brownies and banana bread.

Their contribution along with the brisket sandwiches, potato salad, kale slaw and ice cream sundae?s made for a fantastic summer feast.

We had a smaller crowd than we have had in the past but we all enjoyed sitt ing and dinning with the the residents that were there. As it usually happens, some residents are eager to engage and some prefer to stay to themselves.

Our greatest hope for Johanna and her friends, and for Sophia and Anika is that they see the great importance of helping others in their own communities and will continue to make activit ies like the Guest Chef program at Ascencia and cooking and serving meals for Family Promise (another Devine family favorite!) a constant in their l ives.

Thanks to Ruth & Mike Devine and their helpers! If you?re interested in this mitzvah which we?ve committed to on the f irst Sunday of each month, please contact Jan Freed 323.363.0452 [email protected] and he can give you all the details.

A M orning of Shavuot Study and Fel low ship By I lena Bl ick er

It was a beautiful Sunday morning and it was Shavuot. Twenty of us walked into the chapel for what became a marvelous experience of Shavuot study with our Temple Educator, Carolyn Moore Mooso.

The topic, "Jewish Wonder Women: From Ruth (Biblical) to Ruth (RBG)" had intrigued us. In addition to the two Ruths, we discussed: Rebecca Gratz, founder of the f irst Jewish Sunday School; Clara Lemlich Shavelson, one of the founders of the ILGWU; Hannah Senesh, writer, poet, Zionist who parachuted into Nazi occupied territory during WW II; Loretta Cottin Pogrebin, co-founder of Ms. Magazine and editor; Natalie Portman, actress born in Israel; and Gal Gadot, actress (Wonder Woman) who also was in the Israeli army.

What we looked at specif ically was how each of them shared values that were based in Jewish Mitzvot including Justice, Social Justice, Integrity, Tzedakah among them.

Since it was Shavuot, we started the day with bagels and cream cheese, fruit and for our study break we feasted on cheesecake. More importantly we had the chance to study with our amazing, talented Carolyn Moore Mooso.

Todah Rabah Carolyn for all that you do to teach your pupils, young and not so young!

Hidden Ones by Marcia Fine

It is the mid 17th century in Mexico and the Spanish Inquisit ion is rooting out any who practice, even secretly, rites not sanctioned by the Catholic Church. Among these is a family of conversos, including the abuela and her young granddaughter who are arrested and imprisoned. Their story, based on records of the Inquisit ion in Mexico, details the perilous life that conversos l ived and the journeys they had to be prepared to take to survive.

Al l The Rivers by Dorit Babinyan

This winner of the Israeli Bernstein Prize for Hebrew literature is a love story between an Israeli Jewish woman and a Palestinian man who meet in Greenwich Village. Despite the knowledge that being together back home was not viable, their joy in each other continues to its inevitable end. A best seller, the book was init ially banned by the Israel Education Ministry for its theme. They later relented in that it could be taught in advanced literature classes. Join us in exploring this fascinating book.

Weizmann Day School : L?hitraot to the 2018-19 School Year

by Lisa Feldman, M.A. Ed. Head of Weizmann Day School

Weizmann has completed another incredible school year! Thanks to the generous support of our donors, Weizmann was able to provide these fabulous programs (among others) for students and the community:

- Middle School Overnight Trip. Weizmann?s Middle School students ?bonded? early in the school year with an escape room project, pizza, ice cream, and a movie, all while ?camping out? in the Jewish Federation off ice suite.

- 15th Annual Interfaith Concert . In October, Weizmann again hosted students from neighboring schools New Horizon and St. Marks for a beautiful interfaith concert honoring the memory of Daniel Pearl.

- ?Cat In The Hat? Performance. In March, Weizmann students in grades K-4 performed Dr. Seuss?s ?Cat In The Hat.? It was a special opportunity for our youngest students to showcase their dramatic talent.

- Two Shakespeare Celebrat ions. In April, Weizmann Middle School students performed ?As You Like It? before audiences of family and friends. On another day, they joined with New Horizon students for a special recitation of Shakespeare sonnets at the beautiful Maxwell House in Pasadena.

- LA County Science & Engineering Fair. Weizmann sent six projects to County and returned with six signif icant awards. Among these were a 1st Place Team Award - Behavioral Sciences, a 1st Place UCLA Brain Research Institute Award, and acceptance to the California State Science Fair.

Weizmann is looking forward to an exciting 2019-20 school year. Watch for details ? and have a great summer!

Weizmann?s Mission: to provide an enriching educat ion, rooted in Jewish t radit ions and values, which fosters crit ical thinking, creat ivity, col laborat ion, character and compassion.
