“Extreme Happiness!” “SABABA!!”

These, and other infectious bursts of

exuberance were the rallying cries

heard from one of our tour guides,

Ron Singer, on the Temple Israel

Family Mission to Israel this past

December.

The 10-day trip took us from Tel Aviv, to the Galilee,

and finally to Jerusalem in a culminating moment where

we gathered together at Beit Shmuel with the Torah

unrolled 360 degrees to hear 33 of our B’nai Mitzvah

chant their portions in a gorgeous room overlooking

the Old City. Indeed, this was sababa, and truly

unforgettable.

Traveling in caravan with a group of people on one of

Temple’s mission trips is an experience not to be missed.

At first blush the idea of a pre-planned itinerary that is at

once part historical, part spiritual, and ALL family camp

can seem daunting. It is precisely for this reason why it

should be a must. Part of travel should include being

pulled out of our comfort zones and from the moment

we landed Israel, it was exactly that. There were new

people to meet, adventures to pursue, and ancient roots

to uncover.

Some highlights:

The wonderful Palmach experiential Museum in Tel

Aviv lets you follow the lives and fates of extraordinary

individuals from their enlistment in the army to their

battle in the War of Independence. What was not

expected was actually meeting some of those amazing,

90-year-old heroes in the room above the museum

following the tour. Wow!

Sitting at the back of our bus with my guitar in hand, for

a “super song sesh” with our incredible youth, voices

raised high!

READY TO PACK YOUR BAGS?

Hiking the new Suspended Trail above the spectacular

canyon of Baniyas Stream at the foot of Mount Hermon.

I will never forget watching the young and the young-at-

heart helping each other navigate the steps and bridges

in order to experience this amazing and crucial water

source and wonder.

Shabbat in Jerusalem at the Tower of David Museum

where the story of Jerusalem from the time of Abraham

unfolds, and watching our young people completely

engaged and hanging on our guide’s every word

through exciting exhibitions in an astonishing location.

Standing outside the emotional Yad Vashem complex,

our people, swaying arm in arm, singing a stirring

rendition of Oseh Shalom.

A gorgeous day at the Dead Sea with Rabbi Josh

literally covered head to toe in the fortifying mud of

legend. I’ve never seen him happier.

The views from atop Mount Masada - ‘nuf said.

Beyond the experiences themselves, I feel certain the

relationships that we forged will last long after the trip

itself or, at least, God willing, until our next trip together.

Speaking of our next Temple Trips, Morocco is beckoning in the spring of 2020. Keep an eye out for the dates and particulars.

Perhaps this is the moment where you throw off the

bowlines and join us for a once in a lifetime trip that

promises to be totally sababa!

Sababa - a word used throughout Israel, derived from

the Arabic, to describe something cool or awesome.

Beginning this winter, Temple Israel’s Goodman Family Judaic & Archival Museum is pleased to feature a beautiful exhibit

Kabbalat Shabbat: The Grand Unificationby artist, Debra Band

Her work is an illuminated manuscript of the Kabbalat Shabbat liturgy and rituals, a fusion of words and artwork, to interpret and enlighten

the beloved traditions in the light of both Jewish mysticism, our understanding of the cosmos and contemporary social awareness. The paintings were done on kosher slunk vellum (calfskin), in ink, gouache

and gold in leaf and powder form. This exhibit presents limited edition prints of a portion of the more than 90 original illuminated paintings

and paper-cuts at the heart of the forthcoming book, Kabbalat Shabbat: The Grand Unification, the first illuminated book presenting

the entire traditional liturgy for synagogue and home.

Are you looking for a special way to honor someone you love? Consider dedicating a beautiful piece of Judaic artwork. By making a gift to the

Museum in honor or in memory of a loved one, or in honor of a life cycle event, you will be part of the continuing legacy of a permanent Judaic

collection, which will be enjoyed by Temple Israel for generations to come.

UNDERSTANDING & RESPONDING TO DEMENTIA-RELATED BEHAVIORSWednesday, March 13 • 10:30 am - 12 pmPresented by Peter Ostrow, LMSW, ACSW from the Alzheimer’s AssociationAs older adults with dementia lose language skills to communicate their needs, they often show behavior changes to signal a call for help from others to meet those needs. These behaviors can be acutely stressful for them and their caregivers. This workshop will help attendees understand the challenges that new behaviors present to them and to their family member; identify the needs the person with dementia is trying to satisfy and common triggers and; learn helpful strategies to intervene, such as when to modify the person’s environment or adjust the task they are working on and when to seek medical support.

FUNDS IN ACTIONFUNDS IN ACTIONSponsors the annual Labor Day Picnic

Each year as summer draws to a close, Temple Israel members and the surrounding community look forward to an amazing annual Labor Day Picnic. Through the generosity of Deanna & Joe Bittker and Ellie

& Allan Bittker, Temple provides an incredible, free event that seems to get bigger and better each year. This multi-generational family celebration, open to the community, draws over 2,500 people each year who

come to enjoy rides, games, arts, crafts, entertainment and a wonderful array of fair food.

Provides Mi Shebeirach blankets to hospital, nursing home and rehab patients

Initially created to provide blankets to children in the hospital, this fund recently expanded to include both children and adults in hospitals, nursing homes and rehab facilities. Linda Brodsky created the fund in memory of her parents to provide healing warmth and comfort to those facing a difficult time. The fund

has not only provided more than 200 blankets to children and adults, but it has also created a meaningful volunteer opportunity for members of the community who come together to make the blankets.

Supports families who have children with special needsAnyone who loves a child with special needs knows that navigating through the numerous and unique

educational challenges can be very stressful, not only for the child, but also for the entire family. Recognizing the need to provide support to those families, Susan and Dr. Howard Dubin established the Arthur Dubin Children’s Special Needs School Fund. This important fund provides assistance for

services that help children succeed in school, resulting in a positive difference at home and in all areas of life.

Assists Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrants with Bar/Bat Mitzvah expenses at Temple

Ron Hurwitz established this wonderful fund in memory of his wife, Estelle, to ensure all families can manage the expenses involved in the necessary preparation of their Bar/Bat Mitzvah child. Over the years, this fund has helped countless families with the many expenses involved in this very important

process and celebration. It has given families the peace of mind that everyone, regardless of finances, will have the ability to become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

These special funds, along with more than 150 others, help Temple Israel achieve its mission. The funds engage our members and connect with the community through creative outreach, compassionate assistance and meaningful celebration. The impact from

these funds is remarkable, allowing children to learn, families to heal and people to grow. Many thanks to our fund grantors who recognized a need - and to our donors who continually support Temple’s efforts to reach those in need.
