holds forth with an intervi ew show. He will be prohibited
from i nterviewing union members although I was always under
t he imp ression it was next to impossible t o interview
members of t he musicians union anyway. While we are on
t he subject of dances did you ever notice how similar t he
teenage dance of today resembles t he Charleston of t he 20's.
FIRST IN CANAD A: Phil McKellar, probably t he best known
man about jazz i n Canadian radio was playing "Girl f rom
Ipanema" back in November of 1963. Al All butt of Leeds
Music gave us a l i ttle history about t his Canadian dis
covery. Stan Getz was i n Toronto town last year and at
the same time Gilberto did a CBC TV show and sang "Girl
f rom Ipanema". The disc t hey left with Phil was a 4
mi nute version but Phil recognized it as a possi ble hit
and it became a part of his program (every day, t hat is).
After many phone calls to New York a shorter version was
released. It still didn't take off. Phil was playing it
for every artist he interviewed and everyone agreed it was
a hi t. fin ally it made it and Phil can take the bows. The
groundwork for t his sensational hit was l aid in Toronto

AM ERICAN L£ASING Of CANADIAN MASHRS. More and more we
receive enquiries from US reco rd compani es regarding t he
US ri ghts. We attempt to get in touch with the master
owner. We were distressed recently when a record company
who had contracted for the world r ights from the master
owner, would not penni t t he record to be released in t he
US and had no intention of releasing it t hemselves through
t hei r US parent company. This practice is unfair to t he
Canadian arti st, and a direct attempt to frustate Canadian
ta l ent. Any producer or artist producer who has any in
tention of leasing out his master to any company (no mat-
-ter how big or how reputable) should demand release in
the US 60 days after Canadian release or relinqui sh t he
world r ights after t hat period of t ime. RPM is most i.J>
t erested in any other cases of this kind. Not hing holds
back t he industry as much as t hese binding agreements t hat
cannot be construde as "ego pacts". "If we don1t want it,
you can't have i t". Produce well, produce for t he world
market. If it isn't good enough for t he world it should
not cane out in Canada.
AN ALL CANADIAN HIT PARADE: frank Miles, Music Editor of
CJGX Yo rkt on advises t hat his station has started the first
All Canadian hit parade. They have 25 country and 24 pop
tunes on t hei r listings t his week and hope to have more.
The response has been great and t he cooperation from the
record companies has been good.
HERE AND THERE: Spence Berg of Musicmart Records dropped
off the new Ian &. Sylvia LP "Northe rn Journey" (Vanguard).
Spence also reminded us t hat Ian & Sylvia will be appearing
at t he Newport folk festival July 22, 23, 24 . Hal Ross of
London Records sent along the new Gemt ones LP release
"These fabulous Gemtones". This group of youngsters from
t he Ma ri times started off with a big bang wit h t heir single
release "Reno", national coverage i n newspapers etc, but
t hen we lost track of them. Glad to see t his talented
group back on the scene once agai n. They have been invited
to appear at t he New York World's fair for bro weeks in
August. Al All butt of Leeds Music supplied us with a copy
of "The Flipper" by The Breakaways (Melbourn3). This disc
could be classified as a Commonwealth contribution. It
"Wild Goose". Another Columbia LP release is by Johnny
Lindon and his ork "Happy Dancing". Johnny is better known
for his appearances at the lllperial Room, Royal York Hotel
(10 seasons) plus engagements at Banft and Nassau. Diane
Leigh has a new single out this week "Three Red Leaves"
(Quality). Harold Winslow of Quality Records informs us
t hat initial reation to the record has been most interest..
ing. Al though the song is country oriented, the sound
could be accepted and the idea is certai nly a timely one.
We mentioned the release of "Cathie Taylor Sings of The
Land and The People". (R~rise) Al Mair of Apex filled us
in on a bit of information about Cathie. Cathie was born
in Winnipeg, spent some of her childhood in Vancouver t hen
moved to California, where, after a bit of struggling she
made it. first a a regular on the Roy Rogers TV show and
t hen guesting regularly on The Tennessee Ernie ford show,
Ea rlier LPs were on t he Capitol label .

listed were C,C. Scattershooting, fourteen singles wan- will be released simultaneiously in 8 countries. The reason dered aimlessly over the charts coast to coast with no we mention t his record is because t he fou r man group is
made up of Pat Turpin from Canada, Colin Tu rnbull from
Scotland, Mickey Davenport from India and Murray Anderson
from Australia. Bob Martin, Columbia Records sent over an
interesting LP release by The Travellers "Somet hing To Si ng

consistancy. "Side Winder" by Wes Dakus was the most
consistant throughout t he prairie Provi nces. 50% of t hese
14 singles showed one listing only. In general, the chart
were sl ow and no records Canadian, US or British showed
great strides, The i ndustry is crying for a giant hit
(possibly Canadian) and some sales action. It's been a in part, "The Travellers predate the current folk musi c slow season, spring and summer. PDs and Mds should ask
revival by many , many years. Unlike t he t housands of money- themselves why. What is driving the public away from hungry bandwagoners, t he Travellers sing folk music because
of an early l ove affair with t he tradit ional songs. Respect

R.~~~. •• We would strongly like to suggest that you look at the Top forty-5 chart as an industry chart and keep in mind that we are advanced and in many cases you may have to do some digging to obtain a copy of the records mentioned, We feel however that the Canadian market will gain speed as RPM continues.
Watch for a whole NEW sound when the new Orlen sing

a hit the minute the session was completed. Shirley
Matthews changes labels and this time comes up with
a single on the Amy label. Larry Uttah now has two
bright Canadians in his stable. Besides Shirley, he
has Jayson King-. Welcome back to WKBW Tommy Shannon
who comes back to the freindly giant to complete a

all in a row. KB is strongly Canadian minded since
they beam into Canada as an international giant.
