Elderly Ladies Group Day out to Wales

LAST MONTH the IMWS over 55’s La-

dies group, that meet every Monday af-

ternoon, went on a sea side trip to Rhyl

in Wales. The weather forecast was ‘heavy rain’

all day - so everyone was expecting the

worst, especially as the weather is usually

worse near the coast. Most were prepared

for the day with coats and umbrellas and

were hoping to make the most of the trip

despite the weather. The coach was full with a mix of mem-

bers from the Ladies group, their children

and grand children, other mums, friends

and family members. It was lovely to see

everyone getting along on the coach,

chatting with each other and soon spirits

were high!As we arrived in Rhyl, the clouds were

heavy and dark, with a few spots of rain.

Everyone was worried, but as soon as

we could see the seaside and shops, that

soon changed. Everyone was excited and ready to en-

joy the day. As we got off the coach, the

weather changed and the sun began to

shine! It was lovely - but something didn’t

look right. The beach area was empty, and red

tape cordoned off half of the beach area -

no one was playing in the sand. But it was

busy with people, who were sitting be-

side the beach steps, eagerly waiting. We

didn’t know what was going on but finally

realised there was an Air show scheduled

for the day. As the day went on the sun shone

brighter and we enjoyed the sand on

the beach. It was an absolute treat to see

the RAF Red Arrows zooming past, along

the beach, in perfect formation, daringly

zipping around the skies, narrowly miss-

ing each other! There were also the RAF

Falcons Parachute Display, who managed

to jump out of a plane and land perfectly

on a marked spot on the beach. Everyone

enjoyed their sea side adventure - the

weather turned out surprisingly great (no

rain all day!!) and we managed to experi-

ence an amazing Air show. If you would like more information

about the Ladies group and how to join

please contact the Al-Hikmah Centre on

COMMUNITY and faith groups from across Batley have organised a unique event to celebrate the diversi-ty and unity that flows though the town.

The Walk With Us Friendship Walk will take place on Satur-

day 15 October when local people, children and families will set off from the market place in Batley town centre and walk at a leisurely pace to the Bulldogs ground on Mount Pleasant.

Rev Mark Umpleby from the

United Benefice of Batley said, “The Walk With Us project be-gan many months ago when I suggested to a few faith lead-ers that we do lots of visits & events where people from different faiths meet togeth-er - but these are not seen by

many people apart from those who attend.

“Walk With Us is intended to show the existing lovely friendships - which are grow-ing - between people from different faiths out on the streets of Batley.

Paigaam Editorial

Democracy is all about choice and no matter what your opinion is about politics and politicians, the chance to chose a candidate based on your political views is the basics of electing a democrat-ic leader. This is a fact endorsed and supported in every standard election. But the Batley & Spen By -Election is not a standard run of the mill election.

Whilst some argue that the vot-er deserves a choice of candidates spreading across the political spectrum, for this constituency and on this occasion that is really not right.

It was the politically motivated assassination by a far-right terror-ist that has thrown Batley & Spen into an election no one wanted. The public were not disenfran-chised with their MP. Nor was there an embarrassing resigna-tion or scandal. It wasn’t even an illness or accident. It was a clean as day terror murder.

So to then go through the standard process and the seat potentially change its political allegiance in the House would be supporting the murder and indirectly the act of terror. The message itself would support this

type of terrorism as a tool to uproot the party hold-ing a constituency.

This then explains why major political parties made early statements that they will not be

putting candidates forward for the seat. It’s not an act against democracy but an act in support of democracy by not letting the warped ideas of evil people win.

Sadly, a few candidates, mostly from far right groups or holding far right views, have announced they will be standing in the elec-tion.

This means the good people of Batley & Spen need to make their ballot papers count. Do not be complaisant. Instead, make sure your vote counts.

Our constituency has been robbed of an MP who inspired her constituents and worked to em-power communities. Jo Cox gave communities hope. Let us not allow far-right candidates to turn that to hate.

Hijab hits the catwalk whilst burkini gets a ban. Can anyone make sense of this?

It has been a summer of dis-content for the Muslim woman. Images of armed police on a French beach forcing a woman

to remove a burkini sent a judder of disbelief around the world. But now the catwalk has celebrated the headgear associated with Muslim women as a fashion state-ment. There’s really a lot to be confused about.

The burkini ban on French beaches was a result, they said, of recent terror attacks France has faced. And lets not in any way belittle those attacks. They were horrific and sent fear sprinting through all our veins. There sim-ply is no excuse or justification to kill innocent people – end of.

What we have to remember is the acts of terrorists are there to create a wedge between people who otherwise would peacefully live together. To allow this peace-ful coexistence to change and to bring in rules specific to one com-munity achieves the objective of the terrorists.

The ban was ultimately quashed by the French high court, but the damage of dividing the public had set in.

Travel far west and a very dif-ferent reaction greeted Muslim Women – A Hijab segment in the New York Fashion Week.

Muslim designer Anniesa Hasibuan dazzled the fashion world with hijab outfits that held a strong identity with her Indonesian homeland.

It’s the first time the Hijab has had its segment in the fashion

show although head coverings have featured before. And I sup-pose this is the point.

Whilst the French ban creates fear of Muslim women, the New York Fashion Show displays it as a norm in society. It really is a chalk and cheese situation with a group of innocent bystanders being af-fected.

Women have worn similar head coverings over the ages across faiths and for fashion. In every case it adds to the individuals identity. An identity that has input of nationality, faith, culture, re-gion and language to name a few.

It’s not placing bans on the in-nocent that will create a friendly society. It is respect and under-standing, seeing people as indi-viduals and not judging them as a group that creates friendships and trust.

It might be a simple philos-ophy, but if more people sub-scribed to it, it might just change the world.

“It will be an opportunity for people of different faiths and no faith to come together and enjoy a walk together, find out more about one another, and sample the refreshments and activities at the Batley Bulldogs Stadium.

“Everyone is welcome on Walk With Us.”

Planning the event brought together local organisations in-cluding Kirklees Council, Batley Bulldogs, IMWS, PKWA, local churches and local Masjids. The organisations represent all parts of the local community who already have working partner-ships across a number of pro-jects.

Chair of IMWS Mohamed Mul-la said “In the wake of the horrif-ic murder of our MP Jo Cox we at IMWS felt we needed to show a stand of unity.

“With this in mind we organ-ised the Friendship walk with lo-cal church leaders, community groups, Muslim scholars along-side our affiliate Masjids to plan an event we could do together that would show the unity and forgiveness we hold.”

The Friendship Walk hopes to attract individuals and families of all ages, ethnicity and faiths. The walk is planned to start at 2pm and will conclude with re-freshments and activities at the stadium.

Anyone who finds the trek somewhat difficult is free to meet up at both or either loca-tion to show their support for the bonds of friendship that continue to show we have - more in common.

Rev Mark added, “We as faith leaders in Batley will hope to continue to have events, visits, and times to come together - where the whole communities in Batley can grow in our friend-ships and understanding of one another - to see how much we do have in common but also to celebrate our differences. Please do come along.”

Coroner hears first hand the concerns of community representatives and GPs

THE IMWS Burial Committee last month continued their ef-forts towards establishing bet-ter understanding between officials and community rep-resentatives in dealing with matters following a death.

A meeting held at the Al-Hik-mah Centre brought together the Coroner for the local area, Mr Martin Fleming, mem-bers of the community and local GPs to discuss and look towards resolving problems each has faced.

During the meeting, Moula-na Aslam Seedat went through a presentation that described Islamic teachings in relation to death and burial. The pres-entation elaborated on the reasons and thinking behind Islamic teachings and became food for thought for all those attending.

The IMWS Burial committee explained the role they play including as first responders when a death occurs in the community.

Mr Fleming listened with in-terest and updated the group

on matters raised in previ-ous meetings in-cluding his con-tinued support of non-intrusive post mortems.

This meeting allowed some recent issues to be discussed and gave an opportunity to local GPs who have faced problems them-selves. Mr Fleming sympathet-ically listened and said he will be looking into resolving the issues.

Aziz Daji, Chair of IMWS Buri-al Committee told Paigaam:

“Once again we’ve had a very positive and productive meet-ing with the Coroner and we appreciate his understanding and support to our commu-nity.

“We manged to discuss a range of issues with a view to finding positive outcomes. We were also very pleased a num-ber of local GPs attended as we need to work closely with

them when there is a death. “We welcome their support

in working together in a pos-itive partnership to ensure families are well supported when there is a death. The burial committee members and the burial volunteers work very hard throughout the year and I would like to express my thanks to them on behalf of our community.”

The meeting continues the positive and open dialogue between the Burial Commit-tee and the Coroner which has brought about better under-standing and opened ways do deal with a deceased person in a respectful way.

Kirklees is a ‘top ten finer’ when it comes to term-time fines

THE FATHER who won a landmark case after he was fined for taking his daughter out of school during term time has called Kirklees Council a ‘top ten finer’ when it comes to penalty no-tices to parents. It has been reported that term time fines raked in £130,000 in Kirklees.

Jon Platt who won the case against the Isle of Wight in May, wrote, “This local au-thority are a ‘top ten finer’. They have is-

sued over 3000 pen-alty notices this year compared to 2390 last year.”

Mr Platt asked Kirklees if it plans to change its policy fol-lowing the High Court ruling.

Kirklees replied say-ing, “The Council con-tinues to consider each penalty notice request on a case by case basis and has not changed its policy. Kirklees Council will continue to issue Penalty Notic-es in line with Govern-

ment Legisla-tion.”

Mr Platt add-ed that he be-lieves there has been a change in pol-icy which the Council wants to keep secret.

“They don’t want par-ents to know that they will no longer be fined for a term time holi-day if their child’s at-tendance is otherwise good. They are hoping that fear and igno-rance will ‘keep par-ents in line’. Bad bad decision Kirklees. You

are legally required to publish your policy on school attendance and you can’t secret-ly amend the policy without publishing those material chang-es.” He said on his blog.

THE IMWS Burial Commit-tee has four nominated in-dividuals representing area masajid to assist families with funeral arrangements. Their names and contact details are listed in Paigaam. Bereaved

families are requested to note the following points in order to help make funeral procedures smooth and trouble-free.

Before burial arrangements can be made it is important that the following documents are acquired:

• The death certificate signed by a doctor • The burial certificate (green form) issued by the Registrar

• Notice of interment and grave purchase forms completed by IMWS representatives

The IMWS representatives will assist families with the above documents. It is impor-

tant that the person allocated to your area is contacted as soon as possible following a death. Please make sure there is only one nominated person (preferably next of kin) liaising with IMWS burial con-tact as several people trying to get in touch will only confuse the matter. It is also impor-tant that only one of the IMWS representatives is dealing with the arrangements.

Families should not make any janazah prayer time an-nouncements (either through local masajid or social me-dia) before all the paper work is completed and the burial is confirmed with the IMWS person dealing with the case. There is no guarantee that the funeral may take place on the same day even if all the paper work is ready...this will largely depend on the availability of the cemetery staff for digging the grave and supervising the burial.

It is up to the family to make ghusl and Janazah Salah ar-

rangements with their local masjid personnel. It would also be useful if family mem-bers liaise with the respective masjid and arrange car park-ing attendants to minimise any anticipated disruption. Everyone attending Janazah Salah are requested to abide

by all car parking restrictions and to park sensibly.

Charges for kafn are £35 (male) and £40 (female) to be paid directly to the respective masjid. Full details of all other burial charges will be available from your masjid or IMWS rep-resentative. Families are en-couraged to make donations for use of masjid facilities and the IMWS burial vehicle in or-der to be able to sustain the services.

Finally a reminder to every-one attending janazah to show the utmost respect for the deceased and their family

by observing prayers and con-templating in silence. It is not an occasion for chit-chatting with friends!

PHASE one of the South Gujarat Project in respect of building homes has been completed and will benefit over 25 people.

The remaining four hous-es in Nani khergam District Navsari are now complete and in use adding to the one house already built in Gandevi earlier this year.

The old houses in Nani Kh-ergam were in dire condition

and having barely the basics inside. In some areas, the roof was covered by plastic sheet-ing. Families have moved in now and the homes house 25 people.

The project was overseen by Hasan bhai Mayet from Alipore Social & Welfare Trust to ensure the work was com-pleted on time and within the budgets.

Along with the building of the houses, a Borewell (water pump) has also been installed for the families and surround-ing locals to use. Borewell will cater for everyone in the area irrespective of caste, creed, colour, race or religion.

The pump is operated through a submersible electric pump or by a hand pump.

The families are very thank-ful to everyone who contribut-ed towards the project.

IMWS would also like to

thank Hassen bhai and his dedicated team of volunteers for completing all the projects. Applications have already started coming in for phase two of the housing projects, empowerment and scholar-ship programme.

You can support this cause by making your donations to the South Gujarat Appeal at the Al-Hikmah Centre or the IMWS affiliate masjids.

Phase one of the homes project completed

LOCAL women attend-ing the Dewsbury campus of Kirklees College have been left disappointed with the lack of financial support being made available to study ESOL cours-es. The course, which teaches English to people for whom English is a second language, is subsidised by the government but has faced a significant re-duction in recent years.

Kirklees College Acting Prin-cipal June Durrant said, “This provision is subsidised by Gov-ernment funding which has been significantly reduced over the past few years, restricting what the college can offer.

“It means there is currently very limited support available to pass on to students, so where support might have been avail-able in the past towards tuition fees, this is no longer available in some cases. The college has

publicly campaigned against these cuts.”

This year’s funding asks ques-tions of the announcement made by David Cam-eron at the start of the year when he singled out Muslim women and their inability to fluently speak English as a possible danger of becoming radical-ised. Even though there is nothing to support this claim and for which he was heavily criticised.

The then PM an-nounced a £20m fund to teach English to Mus-lim women adding threats of deportation for those who are not fluent. In actual fact Muslim women make up only a fraction of those in the UK for whom English is not a first

language. Colleges and adult education centres have been campaigning for the funding to be increased for years as it

does not meet the demand out there from men and women to whom English is not their mother toungue.

Since 2011 the government has been reducing funding for ESOL courses which has re-

duced support for families on a low income.

Following last months en-rolment at the Dewsbury cam-

pus readers contact Paigaam saying they received funding last year but none this year. We were also told the most funding available to learners was 25 percent of the total fees.

With families still struggling to meet the cost of living the course has become financially difficult to attend for many.

Cameron’s handling of the announcement in January was heavily criticised but the funding was seen as overdue. However, that has not trickled through to help local learners.

Muslim women find little change in ESOL funding despite Cameron’s £20m promise

BATLEY Cricket Club’s first and second teams finished the season as crowned champions with each winning its respec-tive leagues in the Bradford Cricket Premier League.

The first team took the title of Championship A winners in the club’s first season in the league. The Batley first team secured the title with an 8 wicket win at home to Under-cliffe CC.

The team will be promot-ed and play in the Bradford League Premier Division next season.

Meanwhile, Batley 2nds se-cured their title of Champion-ship B 2nd X1 winners 2016 winning away against Harts-head Moor. The second team will play in the Champion-ship A For next season in 2017

The Club said, “It’s truly a memorable moment in the club’s history not only the fact both team’s winning the Championship and it being decided in the very last games of the season where both teams had to win in order to seek promo-

tion for 2017 season. “All of Batley CC feel very

proud of the on-field achieve-ments this season and now the real hard work beings.”

Batley conquers Bradford Cricket Premier league

DEWSBURY volunteer group Kumon Y’all organised a bringing of two faiths and counties together in a hope to develop a loving friendship. The only problem was the two counties in question were York-shire and Lancashire.

Titled ‘Love of the Roses’ the event brought a team of Priests and Imaams from Yorkshire to play against the same make up of a team from Lancashire in a modified T20 game.

The rules saw batsmen reach the crease in pairs to face four overs. A lost wicket dropped points and at the end of the four overs batsmen would be replaced by the next pair. But that was the easy part.

Batting and bowling reached high standards as cricket balls in their many vanished over the trees beyond the bound-ary lines to be lost to the long grass. The game built up into a frenzy with a real nail biting fin-ish that had everyone on their toes.

Following the event, Revd Oswin from the Monastery commented on the competi-

tive yet well natured game and spoke of the commonalities, “We are all the children of the family of Abraham, close cous-ins, and it’s right we come to-gether as family to enjoy a day, each other, good food, good fun.” He said.

Moulana Hanif from the Lancashire team shared the sentiments saying, “All faiths have one message and that is the message of peace. And let not those who try to divide us win, let us not as people of Lan-cashire or Yorkshire but as peo-ple of faith win this battle once and for all.”

Moulana Farook from Ku-mon Y’all told us of how the group with their young volun-teers have been empowered through the activities they have done and how they have learnt the lesson of how peo-ple can live together.

As for the resulted, Yorkshire narrowly won by just six runs.

Love of the Roses unleashes a match and a half

BATLEY CC teamed up with local groups for a sports fun day with a dif-ference. The club’s ground on Mount Pleasant was transformed into a multi event field with catching practice, archery, football, rugby and of course cricket on offer to visitors. But the difference was this fun day was for children and young people who are living with a disability.

Among the activities on offer was a popular catch-ing machine, which fired out balls and even let par-ticipants dive onto a com-fy padded mat. Young and old all had to try it and roll back a few years to relive a past glory.

Ahmed Daud from Bat-ley CC told Paigaam, “This fun day was done with no funding and organised in less than 4 weeks from the working partnership between Batley CC, Batley Bulldogs, Downs and Spe-cial Friends, Sparkskills, Kirkless Council and York-shire county cricket.

“With Akhtar Ka-sia [Downs and Special

Friends] as a new partner we decided how we could get kids living with a disa-bility involved in major big games outside like cricket, rugby, rounders and ar-chery.”

The attendance was in-spiring with children living with a disability coming at-tending in large numbers.

“We had over 250 kids out of that nearly 100 were children living with a disa-bility, so it was a great suc-cess and everyone includ-ing the parents and the groups enjoyed working together.” Ahmed said.

He added the Club hopes to build on the success of the day as well as the posi-tive feedback they received saying, “we have had really good feedback from a lot of parents and groups who have encouraged us to keep moving forward.

“I’d like to thank all the groups and the donations which were given by a lot of business and all the par-ents and kids who turned up on the day. Thanks to everyone.” Ahmed added.

FOOTBALL’S ruling body FIFA has been urged to ban Israeli teams from playing in matches in the occupied settlements across the West Bank. The settlements are deemed illegal by internation-al law and supporters of the ban say by these matches played in an apartheid region supports and promotes an illegal act.

New York-based Human Rights Watch have asked FIFA to act on the issue of six clubs who play in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

“By holding games on stolen land, FIFA is tarnishing the beau-tiful game of football,” said Sari Bashi, the director of HRW for Is-raeli and the Palestinian territories.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967 and though in-ternational law has continued to condemn the illegal settlements, Israel has continued to build new settlements, ruthlessly removing Palestinians from their ancestral family homes and land.

To comply with international law, Bashi said, the clubs “need to move their games inside Israel.”

The Palestinian Football Associa-tion head Jibril Rajoub confirmed to AFP that it asked the Asian Foot-ball Confederation and European Union to take up the case, and it was hopeful FIFA’s executive com-mittee would.

Last month a group of 66 MEPs signed a letter calling on FIFA Pres-ident Gianni Infantino to ban Israe-li clubs based in settlements.

FIFA is expected to discuss the is-sue during its meeting of its execu-tive committee on 13 -14 October.

FIFA urged to ban football matches in illegal settlements

HEADINGLEY hosted a thriller of a match as two faiths clashed for glory, albeit on a friendly canvass.

As part of the ‘Light of Faith Tour’ Mount Cricket Club, made up of Muslims players from Batley, took on the Vat-ican’s St, Peter’s Cricket Club, for the Sir John Major ‘Friend-ship Cup’ in the return leg of the inter-faith contest.

However, even friendlies have a desire for victory and with St Peter’s CC winning in Turin, the Batley team looked to level the balance.

St Peter’s CC were bowled out for 92 in the T20 match under the Headingley flood lights, with the man of the match Abdul Ravat taking 4 wickets. Mount made a strong start and seemed to be cruis-ing to an easy win. However, they were pegged back with some tight bowling. The game came down to the last over. Requiring 7 to win Mount scrambled a single on the pe-nultimate ball to claim a fa-mous victory.

But as Chair and Co-Founder of Mount CC, Hanif Mayet ex-plained, “The real winner was that the Light of Faith Tour has been a huge success and exceeded everyone’s expecta-tions.”

Fr Eamonn O’Higgins, who works as an international sem-inarian in Rome and Team

Manager to St. Peter’s CC said, “An excellent ‘Light of Faith

Tour’, an excellent moment of communion with the Anglican Church and the Muslim com-munity, an ‘alternate fact’ to the sad stories we often hear, and a reminder that the vast majority of ordinary people in this world want, can, and do live in peace with their neigh-bours. The true religious expe-rience of God unites, purifies and inspires all to a greater humanity, and to be individu-ally and in society an image of God”.

Mark A Arthur, Chief Ex-ecutive of Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) said, “The success of this event was a tes-tament to the hard work and commitment of those in the organisation and staging of it. There was a tangible sense of pride on the night and it was a real privilege for our staff here at Headingley to help both Mount CC and St, Peter’s CC strengthen their inter-faith relations, by facilitating a T20 cricket match on our world fa-mous pitch.

Although we must pass on our congratulations to Mount CC, more importantly, the power of sport and specifical-ly ‘cricket’ was there for all to see”.

The team from the Vatican had earlier visited Madina Masjid for Friday prayers and

were given a guided tour of the neighbouring madrassa.

Mount’s Development Of-ficer and chief organiser of the tour Abdul A Ravat was delighted saying, “On behalf of my Chairman Hanif Mayet and from everyone connected with the Mount Family – sup-porters, contributors volun-teers, players - the past days have been truly memorable and exceeded all our collec-tive objectives on and off the pitch.

“We wanted to show the world that religion can unite people and that this type of authentic interaction is a true source of hope for better inter and intra-faith relationships. We thank everyone involved in making this Tour a real success and for the wonderful memo-ries and bonds of friendship. This is the power of sport and of cricket.”

A SEVEN-WICKET victory against second-placed Green Moor CC crowned Mount A as victors of the Huddersfield Cen-tral Cricket League Premier Divi-sion.

The game ultimately became a cup final with the winners taking the trophy, but with the Batley, club cruised to victory in the end with star batsman Osama Sacha

51 not out.It is the first time Mount A have

won the Premier Division and it means Mount A have won every trophy in the Huddersfield Cen-tral Cricket League over the past 6 years since joining the league.

Mount A are now looking to a new challenge and plan to play in the Halifax Central Cricket league next season.

Labour select their candidate for local By-ElectionTHE LABOUR party has cho-

sen Tracy Brabin as their candi-date to stand at the by-election taking place later this month on 20 October. All the major par-ties, as a mark of respect to mur-dered MP Jo Cox, have chosen not to put candidates forward. Paigaam contacted Ms Brabin to find out more on the favourite to become Batley & Spen’s next MP.

Born in Batley and Spen and brought up in a small flat in Bir-stall Ms Brabin went to Brownhill Primary School and Heckmond-wike Grammar, before embark-ing on a career as an actor and screenwriter.

“I care deeply about Batley and Spen.” She told us, “Batley and Spen has given me so much – now it’s time for me to give back to my home community.”

Her involvement in politics hit the public eye during the Jo Cox campaign, but she had been a campaigner long before. Ms Brabin told us, “I’ve been a cam-paigner and activist for 30 years on issues important to local people, from standing with the miners in the 80s to campaign-ing alongside Jo Cox last year against the closure of local li-braries. I’m now part of the cam-paign to stop the downgrading of Dewsbury and District Hospi-tal.”

We asked Ms Brabin for her views on key issues:

What are the key issues regard-ing the constituency?

“There are so many issues. There are big issues around our hospital and our health service, jobs and the economy, the vi-brancy of our town centres and the impact Government cuts are having on public services.

“But there are also many indi-

vidual personal issues that for a lot of people matter far more.

“People want to feel safe, they want the best for their children, good schools and somewhere for them to play. They don’t want to have to worry about their jobs or their income or paying the bills. They worry about the way elderly relatives are cared for. They want clean streets and decent roads. These may not be the issues that get the headlines but they are what people are most worried about. My role, if elected, will be to help address those issues through parliament and local-ly when people come to me for help.”

What about the Dewsbury Hos-pital?

“The future of Dewsbury and District Hospital is the most im-portant local issue – it is my num-ber one priority. I share the con-cerns of every local person who is worried about what will remain of our hospital as it goes through

this reconfiguration and down-grading. The future of A&E servic-es is the biggest concern. If the downgrade of Dewsbury goes ahead and Huddersfield closes, the entire district will be without a fully-fledged A&E department. Jo Cox got the hospital manage-ment to agree to meet with local people to discuss their concerns. If elected I will get that meeting reorganised immediately.

“Let’s be clear. Labour created the health service. Only a Labour Government will fix our NHS and

ensure it continues to be available for future generations.”

Town Centre regenera-tion?

“Again, this is an area on which a lot of work has been done over the last two years and it is work I

will support wholeheartedly. We have some wonderful work be-ing done by some very dedicated and ingenious people.

“Local communities and trad-ers must help lead this. We don’t have the money or agencies that we had in years gone by, which means the work has to be driven by us. We are very lucky in Batley and Spen as we have a lot of peo-ple already doing this. But they need far more support.

“I am very keen to make sure I use my background and knowl-edge of the creative industries to help boost our local economy.”

Internationally - Syria and Palestine?

“Britain’s place in the world is increasingly concerning. The situation in Syria, and the refu-gee crisis it has created, is one of the most terrible and terri-fying. Britain, Europe and the world have failed the people of Syria. I am proud of the work Jo Cox was doing to highlight the suffering of civilians in Syria, and also to raise concerns about the situation in Yemen and in Palestine.

“The suffering of the Palestin-ian people shames the world. What is happening in Palestine

is hugely important to Paigaam’s readers and many in our local community. These are issues that will pursue actively in Par-liament.”

Immigration?

“The immigration system we have now is very difficult and very unfair. British citizens have the right to have their spouses here and their family members visit them but the Government blocks this. I want to see a fair im-migration system that does not disadvantage families.”

Building a stronger community

“The other main parties are not standing in this election as a mark of respect to Jo. Sadly a number of far right parties are standing, seizing the opportuni-ty to spread hatred and division. Only Labour can defeat this intol-erance.

“I hope people will rally and support me, even if they are not normally a Labour voter. I am the only candidate who will work with everyone in Batley and Spen and serve all its people equally.”

Q. Can i use human rights law to avoid been evicted from my property?

A. Recently a private sector tenant sought to avoid the granting of a possession .The case went all the way to the Supreme Court. In that case a tenant suffered from personality disorder and had not worked for 15 years. She had lost 2 council ten-ancies and so her parents helped her by obtaining a mortgage and letting the flat to her under an assured shorthold tenancy. They were unable to keep up the mortgage payments, and the lender appointed receivers, who sought a pos-session order in the name of the parents against their daughter.

At the first hearing, the judge held that the court was not required to consid-er the issue of proportionality in a case where the person seeking possession against a residential occupier was not a public authority and allowed the claim.

The Supreme Court ruled that Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights ( on which the proportionality argument is based) could not apply in a case such as this.

Q. Can i have freedom of expression on the internet?

A- The dangers of “ letting fly” on the internet are not sufficiently appreciated by some. Freedom of expression is not an absolute right, as one internet blogger discovered to his cost. The High Court ordered him to pay £10000 in libel dam-ages to a film maker whom he falsely vili-fied as a fascist with right-wing and racist views.

The blogger had maliciously targeted the film maker in a prolonged online campaign which blackened his reputa-tion and which was said to have resulted in the loss of lucrative business opportu-nities. He made no attempt to apologise for the baseless slurs, which had been published to a wide audience, and had made no response to the film maker’s defamation claim.

In making the award- the Court not-ed the gravity of the repeated libels and found that the film maker had lost a chance of making profits from aborted commercial plans and negotiations. An injunction was issued, forbidding the blogger from publishing the same, or similar, libels in the future. He was also or-dered to pay the film maker’s legal costs.

Therefore the law can protect you from having your reputation maliciously blackened on the internet.

IMWS HELD a spe-cial Gujarati Mushaira programme last month which yet again deliv-ered a literature master class and a very special opportunity to hear a globe-trotting Gujarati share a few of her stories.

Special guest speaker Preety Sengupta from New York is a well-trav-elled Gujarati poet who has visited around 112 countries in all seven continents and the Arc-tic region of the North Pole. She spoke of her experiences of visiting Muslim countries sharing some inspiring stories.

During her talk she mentioned remote vil-lages, she had visited in the Middle-East and Eu-rope including a village where she was the first Indian to enter. Her expe-

riences of life in different places around the worlds has inspired a number of travelogues and enlight-ened the audience at the Al-Hikmah Centre.

Following Preety’s lec-ture, the audience were entertained with a two-hour fest of Gujarati Po-etry performed by local

poets and familiar friends from Lancashire as well as the guests Nanya Patel and Preety Sengupta.

A captured audience attentively listened and participated in the pro-gramme. You can listen to a recording of the pro-gramme on the Radio IMWS You Tube Channel.

The Modern Inventor

Its something people keep droning on about…pun intended…but the future of home deliveries is already in sight.

The Vision from Mercedes-Benz comes with roof top drones and hatches for easy pick up. It is also looking to be equipped as a driverless vehicle with all the gadgets to take humans out of the procedures of loading and delivering that precious purchase.

The prototype designs seems as futuristic as anything on a sci-fi set and the interior simplicity matches all we thought the future would be. Question is, when it hits the streets, what is the future of the friendly delivery driver who brightens your day on every purchase.

The Vision with drones

It’s just cool. Your phone hovers and spins whilst charging.

The boffins behind the OvRcharge have manage d both wireless charging and magnetic manoeuvring for this utterly pointless but fun filled gadget.

The science bit says magnets are in the box above which you float your phone. Changin polarities and all that make it spin. Plastic phone? No problem, metal cases are available.

Now the science bit for the charging. Energy is sent through waves and transmitted from an electrical load . At the other end an inductive coupling to the device uses the energy to charge the battery. Simples!

A few drawbacks include power loss and distance limitations but lets face it, it’s a gimmick that makes the room look cool.

The floating phone Charger

Sometimes you just need a little space to type. Let your fingers move without hitting the wrong character on a touch screen. Even flex a bit. Well, enter the Tap Strap

It’s a flexible plastic gadget that slips onto your hand and is controlled by your thumb and type by your fingers. But where? I hear you ask. Anywhere!

Basically Tap Strap turns any surface into a keyboard. A table, a book, your arm even your head. Your fingers can tap on anything and the device relays it via Bluetooth to any device such as smart phones, tablets, computers and so on. Not exactly the qwerty keyboard and there is a learning curve but it offers a new option to the whole typing thing.

The Tap Strap

Bring together an ocean artist and a shoe company and you are bound to get something either really cool or really fishy. Addidas and Parley for Oceans have de-signed and made 50 pairs of shoes made from recycled plastic bottles and stitched up with old fishing nets.

Parley clean up fishery and ocean fronts, teaching people to recycle and reuse plastic waste.

It takes around a dozen plastic bottles to make a pair of shoes, and an awful lot of scrubbing to get the fish smell out of the nets…apparently.

The fishnet shoes

Health PageThe content of this page is for general information. Please consult your doctor for more advice and diagnosis.

Diabetes - Are you at risk? Over 2 million people in the UK have diabetes. Up to another 500,000 have diabetes but are completely unaware of it. Could you be one of them? This health page deals with looking at the risk factors for diabetes and who should see their GP for screening tests.

Diabetes is serious. If left untreated it can lead to heart dis-ease, blindness, kidney failure and oth-er life-threatening complications. Many people with diabetes have had it for be-tween nine and 12 years before it is diag-nosed. By this time many of these people will have started to develop some of the complications. But the good news is that if you spot your diabetes early you can greatly reduce the risk of serious health problems.

Type 1 v Type 2 diabetesThere are two main types of diabetes.Type 1 diabetes usually affects people under 40 and is treated with insulin injec-tions, diet and regular physical activity.

Type 2 diabetes is usually found in white people over 40 years old and in black and Asian people and people from minority ethnic groups aged over 25 years. It can be treated with diet and physical activity alone – although most people will also need tablets and sometimes insulin injec-tions. Over three quarters of people with diabe-tes have Type 2. This health page is aimed at people with Type 2 diabetes.

Are you at risk?South Asian or African-Caribbean peo-ple who live in the UK are at least five times more likely to have diabetes than the white population. If you are white and over 40 years old, or if you’re black, Asian or from a minority ethnic group and over 25 years old and have one or more of the following risk factors, you should ask your GP for a test for diabetes:

• a close member of your family has Type 2 diabetes (parent or brother or sister)• you’re overweight or your waist is 31.5 inches or over for women; 35 inches or over for Asian men and 37 inches or over for white and black men. Not all people with diabetes are overweight but the stats show that over 8 out of 10 people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are over-weight.• you have high blood pressure or you’ve had a heart attack or a stroke• you’re a woman with polycystic ovary syndrome and you are overweight• you’ve been told you have impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glycaemia• you’re a woman and you’ve had gesta-tional diabetes or giving birth to a large baby

• you have severe mental health prob-lems.

The symptomsThe symptoms of untreated diabetes will usually be very obvious in people with Type 1 diabetes but not so clear or non-ex-istent in people with Type 2 diabetes. If you’re older you may put the symptoms down to ‘getting on a bit’. Taking early ac-tion is key so if any of the following apply to you, ask your GP for a diabetes test:

• increased thirst• going to the toilet all the time especially at night• extreme tiredness• weight loss• genital itching or regular episodes of

thrush• recurrent episodes of infections such as abscesses or boils• slow healing of wounds• blurred vision.

The complicationsDiabetes is serious because it can lead to life-threatening complications. These in-clude:• heart disease• blindness• kidney failure• stroke• nerve damage that can lead to amputa-tions

But the good news is that you can reduce your risk of developing complications such as heart disease by getting diag-nosed early and then controlling your diabetes. You can lead a full and healthy life with diabetes but the key is getting diagnosed as early as possible.

What to do nextIf you think anything in this health page applies to you then go to your GP and ask them to test you for diabetes. Diabetes is a serious condition that needs treatment. The sooner you act the better.

Further informationCall the Diabetes UK Careline on 0845 120 2960 (Textphone 020 7424 1031) or email [email protected] for confi-dential support and information. Visit the Diabetes UK website at www.diabetes.org.uk or the global diabetes community website on www.diabetes.co.uk/
