Luke 24:31 Did your parents tell you, when you were growing up, “Wash your hands before you come to the table for dinner”? It was good advice then, and it still is today. It's good advice, too, when we come to the Lord's table. Some denominations have a basin (called a lavabo) and towel near the altar for those presiding and serving at Holy Communion to wash their hands before handling the bread and wine. Others of us have to wash our hands before the service or slip out during a hymn before Communion. During flu season, that may not be quite enough, when sharing song books and passing the peace come before Communion in the service. So our commu- nity is going to follow the practice of a number of churches and have hand sanitizer available for those who will be handling the bread and the cup to use before serving. The Rev. Taylor Burton-Edwards, who works at the United Methodist Board of Disciple- ship, wrote an article on the H1N1 virus and what to do in worship. His suggestions included washing your hands before handling food, staying home when you're sick (pastors sometimes have trouble with that one), and, perhaps most important, “do not fear germs more than you love Jesus.” That last one, especially, is worth remembering. Such a Gathering of the Low Country Em- maus Community family was held on Saturday, 17 October 2009, at Camp Summers in Cameron. Under cloudy cool skies around 100 of the Emmaus family enjoyed some great food and great music while catching up with old friends and making new ones. The day was concluded with an awesome worship service in the Chapel. Bill Halbritter delivered the Fourth Day talk and Billy Gaines and David Lupo led the service. Family reunions provide time for family and friends to slow down and assess priorities. Loved ones pass away and babies are born, children grow up and get married, jobs change, but there is continuity and acceptance in the family. The Emmaus Community is family. We feel loss when loved ones leave us; we share pain and laughter together. Biological families share genetic material; the Emmaus family shares a faith in the Risen Lord as demonstrated through praise and worship. The Walk to Emmaus is a gift that we share with those in the faith, to build the leaders of the church. As we are reminded of the place where we took our Walk, as we worship with friends and family at the Camp or in our local church, let’s share the gifts that we have been given. Offer the Walk to Emmaus experience to friends and family! The next offerings of the Walk to Emmaus for the Low Country Emmaus Community will be held in the Spring of 2010. The weekends are 15-18 April for the Men and 29 April-2 May for the Women. Please be in prayer and in sponsorship for these Walks.
