LOCAL VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Tom Watkins, a local dentist, is a volunteer at Mystic Seaport, an open-air museum that recreates the past. Tom has given more

than 2,000 hours to the museum over the past few years.

Tom combines his medical knowledge and keen interest in local history by working in the old pharmacy at Mystic Seaport. The

old pharmacy is one of his favourite places. “People are fascinated to see how different it is from pharmacies today. Back then, in

addition to medical supplies, locals would have bought spices and tobacco here, as well as some groceries and other household

items.”

Tom also lends a hand with anything that needs doing, from working as a costumed guide to constructing new exhibits. He says

that what he likes best are his co-workers. “Many of the other volunteers are craftsmen who demonstrate the techniques used

200 years ago, such as carving wooden figures that were placed on the front of ships. Watching them can be a real learning

experience and they are always happy to explain their craft to you.”

THE AMERICAN WHALING INDUSTRYWhaling was once a thriving international industry and whales provided a source of food and livelihood for many people living on the north-east coast of America. A wide range of products were made from whales, including special oils used for manufacturing candles, and oil to make machines run more smoothly. In America in the early 1800s, whaling ships regularly set out on long voyages to the Pacific Ocean in search of

whales. Although whale hunting voyages were long and life for the crew was often dangerous, they drew thousands of men. The golden age of American whaling extended into the 1850s when, with the discovery of another source of oil underground, the industry began to decline. Today, the last wooden whaling ship in the world, the Charles W. Morgan, built in 1841 at a cost of $26, 877, can be seen at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut.
