At Warren Central School, 2013 is the “Year of Growth and Innovation” and we will be making this the focus of all our professional learning throughout the year. Last year students and staff were asked to “Expand the Borders” and “Broaden the Horizons” of their knowledge and this will be extended throughout 2013. In January, I had the opportunity to visit three schools in the United Kingdom to discuss their learning and accreditation journeys as “Thinking Schools”. I was also able to share the wonderful and exciting work Warren Central School had implemented in cognitive development and education. The visits to Christ the King Primary in Llanishen, Wales as well as Wood Green Academy and Woodnewton Learning Community in the Midlands of England allowed me to see cognitive teaching and learning occurring in classrooms across the K-12 continuum. These innovations will be implemented in classrooms across Warren Central School during 2013. Our school targets reflect this vision and focus solidly on improving our student‟s skills in Literacy and Numeracy. The school is also continuing to invest in professional learning that will improve the levels of engagement of the students. This year we as a school will be working with our students and teachers on our accreditation journey as an accredited “Thinking School” with the University of Exeter in England. In doing so, we will become the first government school in Australia to be accredited. During 2013 we will continue to promote aspiration, achievement and attendance with our students and parents. When students aspire to a goal this allows them to follow the road towards achievement and ultimately succeed in the attainment of that goal. Attendance is vitally important to achievement as it allows students to gain the knowledge and skills to succeed by following a well-designed and sequential path. It is crucial that your child attends school every day to gain the maximum benefit we can provide at Warren Central School. I would like to welcome our new teachers to the school community. Mrs Gaye Rush has joined the Secondary staff in the English Faculty after teaching at Tottenham Central School for a number of years. Mrs Shannon Appleyard has accepted the position of teacher of the Multi-Categorical class in Secondary and Mrs Julie Wise will be teaching secondary Agriculture for one day a week. Finally, I would like to thank all parents and carers who have entrusted us with the vital role of educating your children for the 21 st Century. The school has a strong commitment to work with parents to achieve outstanding outcomes for your children Updating Information It is important for parents and carers to update their contact phone numbers and addresses with the school. This allows us to contact you if there is an emergency or other matter that requires prompt attention. Parents and caregivers must also notify the school of any medical conditions so that if illness or accidents occur your child can receive the best medical treatment available. Please contact the school during school hours to amend your details. Auscott‟s Bruce and Robyn Loder Education Scholarship 2013 Congratulations to Rebecca Murray on winning this year‟s Auscott Bruce and Robyn Loder Education Scholarship. It was extremely pleasing to attend the presentation of the scholarship this morning with Mrs Dianne Hamilton and Mrs Robyn Taylor. The school and her parents are very proud of Rebecca‟s achievement and wish her every success as she leaves to study Business and Marketing at CSU in Bathurst. Warren Central School would also like to sincerely thank Auscott Limited for their altruism and vision in supporting outstanding young people from rural and isolated communities. All small rural communities need young persons of the calibre of Rebecca to be continual role models for others in the community. Rebecca has displayed this ideal by recently being named Warren‟s Young Person of the Year. The future of communities in the “bush” depends on young people being supported with their further education so as they may one day return to become the leaders of the future. Auscott Limited is to be applauded for making this happen. Warren Central School has a proud tradition in winning the Auscott Scholarship and we congratulate the fine achievements of some of our past winners: Maria Sutton (Doctorate in Archaeology), Janene Stephens (Bachelor of Physiology), Andrew Clarke (Veterinary Science),

Jamie Moran – Davis (Bachelor of Accounting), Gabrielle Manga (Bachelor of Education), Katrina Robertson (Bachelor of Radiology), Wesley Hamilton (currently studying a Masters of Physiology), Rhiannon Stephens (completing the final year of her Bachelor of Sport Management and Tourism degree) and last year‟s recipient Rachael Cooney (continuing her degree in Psychology and Criminology).

From the Deputy Principal Well I must say that I have had a very enjoyable start to the 2013 year. There have been far less issues in discipline that I have had to deal with. We have a lot of wonderful students who are putting more hope into education being their way to a better future. It is great to see the happy smiling faces of students who are achieving their goals. Welcome to Mr Ray Heath who is a Rural Relief Teacher based at Warren. Mr Heath services schools in Gil, Trangie, Tottenham, Nyngan, Narromine and other small schools around, if required. Mrs Julie Whiteley was very busy in the first week assessing the Kindies for the Best Start Program. This was a pleasant introduction for a number of children into “Big School”. The benefits of the Best Start program will be enormous in the future as students can have their individual programmes tailored to their needs. Meanwhile Ms Kiefel will be learning all about Reading Recovery and implementing that program into the lower Primary classes.

Kindergarten 2013 with their teacher Mrs Whiteley

The staff have been very busy preparing lessons involving “Thinking School” quality teaching and learning processes. These along with collaborative classrooms have been a focus by all staff and have changed the way students and staff interact in the classrooms. The success of this program will be determined throughout the year and be constantly evaluated. So far a lot of students are enjoying the new ways of learning. The Swimming Carnival went off without a hitch thanks to the efforts of Ms Reeves, Mr Hinton, all the staff and students who participated. Congratulations to Oxley

House for winning the Carnival and also to all the record breakers – I‟m sure it will be a while before Abbey‟s records will be broken. Students and Staff have begun training in IKIFIT. Kim McRae and his assistant from Trangie visited the school last Wednesday and ran programs with Years 8,9,10 and 11, then after school with the staff. With the implementation of Positive Behaviour Learning this year, IKIFIT fits right in and adds to the welfare and discipline of Warren Central School. The Trade Training Centre is coming on well. The old kitchen has been totally gutted, and the old science lab is now the new kitchen for the next 12 months. When the TTC is finished, it will be up to industry standards for kitchens and will mean that Hospitality and food tech will take on new dimensions. The Royal Far West Program will be starting tomorrow out the front of the school. This is a pilot program in which students will be assessed for speech needs by professionals. Warren Central has been very fortunate to be part of the pilot program. Thanks to Mrs Brooker for her negotiating and organising skills in arranging for the RFW to come to Warren.

New Face at WCS Mrs Gaye Rush has commenced as our new English /HSIE teacher. Mrs Rush has spent the last four years teaching at Tottenham Central School and the previous sixteen at Moruya High School on the South Coast. Pictured with her is Mrs Smith who was promoted to Head Teacher English/HSIE last year.

Swimming Carnival Our whole school swimming

carnival was held in our first week back at school. It was a fresh start with all competitors ready to swim. The first race was the Open Primary 100m freestyle which kicked the day off in fine style with our very first record broken. All the sporting houses (Oxley, Mitchell, Sturt and Macquarie) were shouting out their war cries to get their team revved up. K-2 students had lots of fun in the little pool, with games and activities. It was a great day with everybody swimming very well and participating in most events.

Many swimming records were broken in both Primary and Secondary. Felix Weston, Earl Greenaway, Mackenzie Pardy and Abbey McCloskey were the in form swimmers on the day with each of them breaking a number of records.

Our swimming champions were: Junior Primary – Earl Greenaway / Mackenzie Pardy Primary 11 Years – Riley Brown / Saranna Fisk Senior Primary – Felix Weston / Allie Andrews Junior Secondary – Matthew Marks / Abbey McCloskey Senior Secondary – Molly Gough Open Secondary – Craig Fields / Megan Callander Congratulations to all our swimmers. Oxley were the eventual house champions with Macquarie and Mitchell equal second and Sturt 4

WORLD EDUCATION PROGRAM World Education Program (WEP) Australia is now accepting applications from students who wish to participate in 2013/14 exchange programs for a summer, semester or year. Students can choose to study and live life with a carefully selected host family in more than 25 countries. I did it! 10 months in a foreign country, without knowing the language, culture and not even a single person at first. I have experienced unforgettable moments of highs and lows, but I can’t imagine not having done this now. Thinking about all the amazing people I’ve met, the lessons I have learnt and things I have seen, I feel truly lucky to have been there living a different life. I have no regrets, as I have grown to be more mature, open to life and aware of the world around me. Despite it being hands down the hardest, it has also been the best thing I have ever done for myself. I now feel ready to start life in Australia with a clearer idea of who I am, knowing my strengths, weaknesses and my future goals. Exchange

has really helped me define myself and become a stronger and more confident person. Alison (Moreton Bay College) year program to Italy Exchange students return to Australia with maturity, confidence, and in many cases, proficiency in another language. If learning another language is not for your child, excellent programs to the USA, Canada, Ireland and the UK are also available. Scholarships to Argentina and China and Early Bird Specials are now available for programs commencing in 2014! Become a WEP Host Family! Experience the joys of hosting an exchange student and gaining an international family member. Visit www.wep.org.au to find out more. Find Out More! Request a free information pack.
