MUNICIPALITIES

Asker and Bærum comprise the western side ofAkershus and are geographically separatedfrom the upper reaches of the county, borde-ring Oslo in the northeast and Buskerud in thesouthwest. Even though Asker and Bærum aretwo of eastern Norway’s most densely popula-ted municipalities, there is still a great deal ofunspoiled wilderness. Only 25 percent of theBærum region is considered to be urban.

AskerAsker was originally named Askar, which in theold Norwegian was the plural of “ash tree”.Today Asker is both a city and a village withAsker centre at the heart of the municipality. Ithas a population of roughly 56.500 living onan area of 101 km2.

From the fields to the fjord Asker is distinctlygreen. Characteristic of Asker’s landscape arethe 350 metre tall ridges Vardåsen andSkaugumåsen, many rolling hills, lakes andponds and a beautiful coastline. Silence andnatural beauty can be found along Semsvannet(“Lake Sem”); one of the “portals” to Vest -marka, a beloved hiking area all year round.

Culture lies in both the historical and the con-temporary. Asker has places, buildings, memo-rials and associations that support the munici-pality’s cultural heritage. In this respect, thechurch has been the most important flag-bea-rer of Asker’s culture. Askekallen, a row of ashtrees, is the city’s symbol. It was planted as anavenue by the Asker church 200 years ago.

An important part of Asker’s vibrant culture islinked with the Hvalstad valley, also known as“Artists’ valley”. Tilla and Otto Valstad’s homeis now a part of Asker Museum. Today Asker’scultural centre is unquestionably the AskerCommunity Centre at Trekanten.

BærumBærum’s name is likely derived fromBjörgrheim, which means “the land betweenthe mountains”. With its 115,000 inhabitants,Bærum is Norway’s fifth most highly-populatedmunicipality and covers an area of 192 squarekilometres. On the southwest side, Bærum sha-

res a border with Hole and Ringerike, Oslo tothe northeast, and on the southeast a sea bor-der with Nesodden. Bærum’s centre of admi-nistration is Sandvika, which today is conside-red a city.

The municipality has a vibrant cultural life asevident in the activity of organisations andvolunteer groups. Bærum Cultural Centre is inSandvika and has a capacity for an audience of500. Bærum has two medieval churches onTanum and Haslum that are still being used tothis day. From the churches you can follow thePilgrim’s Route towards Nidaros.

Bærum’s highest point is Vidvangshøgda at549 metres above sea level, and lies in northe-astern Krokskogen, but the best vantage pointis at the top of southern Kolsås (349 metresabove sea level). From here you have a view ofnearly the entire municipality, toward Oslo, across to Nesodden and large areas of theOslofjord.

Calcining has been an important industry inBærum’s districts for 850 years. The lime wasnot only used locally, but also exported tomany large construction projects going on inand around Oslo, and further south along thecoast. The importance of lime production forthe area inspired Bærum’s official coat of arms,a lime kiln.

In 1603 an iron ore was found in Bærum, or“Vestre Bergum” as it was known at the time. This lead to Christian IV entering a fixed-termcontract with Paul Smelter and the constructi-on of an iron refinery. Bærums Verk developedinto an essential business. It had an influenceon the village for centuries and was of greatimportance to Norway as a whole.

Industry in Bærum developed primarily alongthe waterways, seeing the construction of sawmills, brickyards, pulp mills, paper mills andglassworks. Good harbours and the arrival ofthe Norwegian railway in 1872 were also neces -sary steps in Bærum’s industrial expansion.Ice cutting remained a big business on Bærum’smany ponds all the way into the last century, aswas the cultivation of fruit and berries.

In addition to the Valstad collections, Asker Museumalso contains Labråten – Hulda and Arne Garborg’shome, Albert Seheim’s workshop at Sem, the SchoolMuseum on Jansløkka, Strandsitterhuset onKonglungen and the Coastal Culture Centre in Vollen.

Valstad’s collectionsAsker Museum, the Valstad collections, lies in theHvalstad valley, “Artists’ Valley” in Asker. The heart of the museum is the home of Tilla andOtto Valstad. The museum has a lush garden with aBaroque flair. Along with its animal sculptures madeby Anne Grimdalen, it features a rich in-house collecti-on of objects. Fixed and changing exhibitions. KaféGunhild has the same opening hours as the museum.

Labråten – the poet’s homeLabråten was the home of poet Arne Garborg. Withhis wife Hulda Garborg, he settled there in 1897, andit hasn’t changed much since then. Labråten washome for the artistic couple from 1898 to 1934. Itwas also called “Målkroken” (literally, “the languagecorner”), because proponents of New Norwegian (analternative standard of written Norwegian) often gat-hered there. Here the first seeds of The NorwegianTheatre sprouted. Labråten was a meeting place forfriends and allies, a congregation for thoughts andcreativity, where impulses from Europe and the rest ofthe world were communicated and passed on.

Sem Sag and Albert Seheim’s WorkshopThe sawmill industry arrived in Asker around 1600,and Sem Sag became operational in 1612. There wasa struggle over the wood since farmers also had aduty to get hold of coal for the Bærum ironworks, and a lot of lumber was used for salt cooking and cal-cination. Sem Sag is periodically run as a communitysawmill and had restrictions on how much wood theycould cut. Albert Seheim’s Workshop lies on the otherside of the river across from Sem Sag, and is a com-plete skiers’ and wheelwrights’ workshop.

Vollen Coast Cultural CentreThe Selvik villa was built in 1881 as a country homefor the Øhlckers family. In 1994 the main building wasrestored and is today a museum with exhibitions anda cafe. Vollen’s history is related through models, textand pictures, with a special emphasis on the periodbetween 1870 and 1950. The theme of the culturaland historical exhibition is boat building, yachting, trade, fishing, ice cutting, gardening and guests onvacation.
