Yagna Varaha Modi
From Bhagavata comes the story of Mahavishnu’s annihilaon of the demon
Hiranyakasha, brother of Hiranyakaspu. He carried the mother earth to the boom of
ocean and challenged Vishnu to fight him and reclaim her. Mahavishnu came out of the
nostrils of Brahma as a ny lile boar which soon grew into a giganc form of Yagna
Varaha dived to the depths of the ocean, killed the demon, reclaimed her and estab-
lished her in all her prisne glory.
Presently our great Motherland has been deprived of all her glory by foolish,
selfish and ignorant band of Hiranyakasha’s (having their eyes centred only gold, or
wealth) through their misrule of decades. Mother had virtually gone to the very rock
boom of her glory and dignity. And here comes our Yagna Varaha Modi who is
ordained to restore our Motherland to her old glory—as was done by another
Narendra more than hundred years back. The present Yagna Varaha has taken upon
himself to once again restore our most ancient Mother India to her prisne glory.
Herea-er we should all offer our contribuons to the great work undertaken
by our beloved Prime Minister by dedicang all our acvies work and service as
Mothers Work and execute it to the best of our abilies following the path of Satya
and Dharma. That is the only way in which we can make Mother India shining and
fulfill the hopes and aspiraons of millions of Indians within the country and outside.
Let us not spoil the effect by resorng to popular expressions like India’s para-
digm shi-, India modified etc. and thus loose the real implicaons of the change. Let
us make the world recognize that “INDIA IS AWAKENING”.

ATMAVIKAS SHIBIR-I ( KINDLE THE LIGHT WITHIN)
Thirty six participants
from VII to Xth class, took
part in the first Atmavikas
Camp held from 4th April
to 13th April 2014. On
the first day, after inaugu-
ration by Lakshmi Didi and
little Laxmi, Didi spoke to
the children briefing them
about the camp and its
routine. During the fol-
lowing ten days, apart
from yoga classes taken by
the ladies team of Yoga
Varga namely Sakeena,
Prajeela, Padmaja, Saritha
and Jayashree on different
days, there was one lec-
ture session each day.
Main resource persons
were Sri Harishankar and
Dr Muralidharan both of
them being B.Ed. trainers,
Shri Mohanji and Shri
Sudhakarji and Lakshmi
Didi were the other
speakers. A workshop on
communication by Shri
Haridas was also kept dur-
ing one of the days which
the children thoroughly
enjoyed. Afternoons were
kept exclusively for chil-
drens’ performance in
group discussion, skits,
drapery and quiz etc.
After tea break there
was their favourite crea-
tivity classes when they
learnt glass painting, fabric
painting, making of paper
ornaments, paper flowers,
greeting cards and scien-
tific toys. Smt Leena

On 13th evening, being the
concluding day of the camp,
the participants’ parents were
invited for a meeting. Anapu-
zha Murali master, an experi-
enced counselor for children
of this age group, along with
Didi talked to the parents.
The cultural programme
started with Veda chanting by
all the participants together.
Murali Master and Sri
Pavitranji were the guests for
the programme. There were
numerous items chalked out
by the children themselves,
which included patriotic
group songs, skits, dance, dra-
pery presentation and of
course yoga demonstration.
Both Didi and Murali master
talked to the children. Group
wise as well as individual priz-
es were distributed by the
Chief guest. The whole pro-
gramme was beautifully con-
ducted by the children them-
selves.

sons. Games followed after
that. This time games were
also conducted by Mss. Ran-
jitha, Smitha and Jayashree of
Yoga varga ladies team. Chil-
drens’ grasping power of the
vedic chants and patriotic
group songs was just amazing!
Group activities like serving,
cleaning, decorating the photo
frames of the Holy trio etc.
were done with full enthusi-
asm. Diary writing was must
for each child. Number of
girls exceeded the number of
boys this time. Students from
seven different schools partic-
ipated.

ATMAVIKAS SHIBIR-2 ( CHITRA SHALABHAM)
This years Atmavikas Shibir II had the enchanting
name of ‘Chitra Shalabham’( Butterfly). The second
shibir for children of classes IV to VI, started on
17th April and continued till 23rd April. Inaugura-
tion of the shibir was done by Smt Madhavi Tai
from Nasik. 40 children registered. Boys outnum-
bered the girls in this camp. They were divided into
five groups after the name of traditional Kerala flora
namely:
Tulasi, Mullapu, Chettipu, Mandaram and Chempa-
kam. Volunteers from the previous shibir were
given the charge of each group. Anandadham
became charged with the loud applause, songs
chants and noises made by the mischievous lot of
children.
There was a lecture session every morning at 10.30
after song and sloka practice. Lakshmi didi and Sri
Sudhakarji conducted classes on Swami Vivekananda
and Personality Development. A class on Sanskrit
speaking was conducted by one of our vidyarthini
inmates, Kum Veena of Kerala Vyasa Sanskrit
Vidyapeetham. Morning session was followed by
Yoga conducted by Smt. Padmaja, which the
children loved. After lunch children listened to
Ramayana from Su. Bindu. Activities on creativity
were conducted by Smt Madhavi Tai. Children
learnt Origami, painting on rexin, preparation of
scientific toys etc sitting in their respective groups
guided by their group leaders. On the day before
concluding, the group leaders conducted a quiz
competition for the participants on whatever they

On the concluding day, parents of the participants
attended the meeting meant for them. Didi spoke
at the meeting. Function started with Vedic
chants, followed by cultural programme by the
children. Looking at their performance on the
stage, nobody could imagine that these children
each of them who was like a bundle of dynamite
could be so calm and mature on stage as if they
were the best behaved children on earth! All
their items were highly appreciated by the audi-
ence. Kum. Varada from Chennai was adjudged as
the best camper. The creative works were
displayed in the hall and parents could see the
talents in their own little children. The

NURSERY TEACHERS ‘ ORIENTATION COURSE-2014
For the first time a Nursery Teachers’ Orientation
course was conducted at Anandadham, Kodungal-
lur, from 17th April to 3rd May. 24 teachers from
five different schools namely, Sandeepani Sishvhar,
Phoenix Public School, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Sri
Sai Vidya Bhavan and Amrita Vidyalayam enrolled
their names. The programme started with deepa
prajwalan by Sri Sudhakarji and Smt. Madhavi Tai.
After this, ice breaking session followed whereby
teachers came to get acquainted with each other.
Tai then introduced the course to the teachers.
Training started from the day one itself. The daily
routine was from 9.30 am to 12.30 noon with
equal time for practical and theory. The topics for
theory papers were i) Teaching Method of Lan-
guage and Mathematics ii) Child psychology and
iii) Health/Hygiene and Child welfare. Two guest
lecturers, Dr Ramaswamy, pediatrician who took
classes on Health, Hygiene and Child Welfare and
Sri Ramesh, Health Inspector who took class on
Child Psychology. The rest of the topics including
Child psychology and Teaching methods of Lan-
guage and Maths were covered by Smt Madhavi Tai
herself. Crafts and other topics for practical were
also guided by Taiji. All the teachers took keen in-
terest in everything, in spite of language problem,
as the medium of instruction was English. An infor-
mal theory and practical test was kept for all the
teachers on 1st and 2nd of May. On the 1st there
was Theory of 150 marks based on the lectures
and on 2nd May there was practical of 50 marks
based on teaching method and craft. In addition,40
marks were allotted for 4 note books on teaching
methods and crafts which each teacher prepared

and 10 marks kept for overall performance of each
teacher. Total evaluation was 250 marks.19 teachers
out of 23 attended the tests and all of them came out
successful, thanks to Madhavi Tai’s constant and un-
tiring effort.
On 3rd May was the concluding programme of the
Nursery teachers’ Orientation camp. The chief guest
of the programme was Dr Murlidharan, Director
Hindi Prachar Kendra and two B.Ed. colleges in
Kodungallur. A display of the teachers’ crafts and
notebooks which they enthusiastically completed
within the 17 days of the course was an added attrac-
tion. After the usual prayer and deepa prajwalan by
the invited guest, Dr Murlidharan spoke to the teach-
ers, as to how a primary teacher can mould the life of
a child. Teachers were awarded certificates for their
untiring effort to improve their innovative power. All
the teachers presented Madhavi tai with a lovely to-
ken of their regards and gratitude. All of them re-
quested Kendra to conduct such Orientation courses
every year so that they would be well equipped with
the latest research methods.

Karma yoga and management
I am neither a scholar or philosopher nor am I an
expert in management or produc!vity. But I am
deeply concerned with the falling standards in
every sphere of human ac!vity in our country at
the moun!ng frustra!on and dissa!sfac!on
among our work force and above all how we are
perpetua!ng a Western system, the models of
which are far from the true vision of Reality. This is
what has made me venture into a different field of
ac!on, to engage myself in work of a more
profound and vaster dimension at the
Vivekananda Kendra where work has its
key-notes Sacrifice and Service, where Karma yoga
forms the ‘Nishtha’ or discipline in life. I am ven-
turing to place before you a few thoughts which I
hope would urge you experts to search for more
prac!cal and meaningful principles and models to
suite the psyche of our and the changing world
view consequent on modern scien!fic discoveries.
During his wanderings in the country from 1890-92
Swami Vivekananda experienced himself the dete-
riora!on in values and work ethics in our country.
He observed that our people had become slaves in
every sense of the term. The immediate emergen-
cy treatment that Swamiji could think of was to
wake up our people from their centuries old leth-
argy and put them to right ac!on through the !me
tested path of Karma yoga. Today we are in the
last lap of 20th century. No doubt our cons!tu!on
puts it we are a Sovereign Republic . As a na!on
we are free. But as individuals we con!nue to be
slaves. Self oriented work is all that we know of
which as we engage in more and more, only adds
to the bondage, burden and misery instead of giv-
ing the taste of joyous freedom which is the natu-
ral flavor of good work well executed. The sum
total pursuit of excellence is a thing of past hones-
ty, truthfulness and dedica!on to work, so beau!-
fully summed up in the word ‘character efficiency’
are unknown. Understanding and sympathy for
fellow human beings have disappeared from the
na!onal scene. Even ‘social service’ has become a
paid job.
At the na!onal level we are figh!ng for our rights
and privileges. There is no topic of discussion
among the working groups other than pay, promo-
!on, prospects, perks. Nobody is bothered about
Dr. M. Lakshmi Kumari
“…………..the world view implied
by modern physics is inconsistent with our
present society, which does not reflect the
harmonious interrelatedness we observe
in nature. To achieve such a state of dy-
namic balance, a radically different social
and economic structure will be needed: a
cultural revolu(on in the true sense of the
word. The survival of our whole civiliza(on

such a change.”
ABi-monthlybulletinof10VivekanandaKendraVedicVision
duty. The easiest and most prac!cal path for
our na!on’s regenera!on is a reappraisal of
this irrevocable and supremely relevant karma
yoga. To enrich and energize our na!onal
wealth or human resources, which just cannot
be done by crea!ng new ministries and depart-
ments, our people should understand the fun-
damentals of “secret of ac!on” and learn to
suffuse their work with a new idealism of sacri-
fice and service, if not worship.
Management of finance, of resources, of personal
and of produc!vity in a system, etc are ma/ers of
study and discussion among the present day ex-
perts. What do our ancient seers have to say in
this ma/er? A na!on which excelled and created
such marvels in study, philosophy, art architecture
and so on must have certainly evolved a philoso-
phy of work too, for the individual, group and the
na!on. Not many of our experts have bothered to
study this aspect of our great heritage. A country
which was renowned by the name of Punyabhoo-
mi, Tyaga bhoomi, Dharma bhoomi, Karma bhoo-
mi and so on, each epithet a pointer to a great
principle and philosophy, would certainly have
something of a value in this field of work as well.
The world at large is discovering in our Raja yoga –
the royal path to self unfoldment – a science for
total human development; in Bhak! yoga, an ab-
solutely scien!fic incomparable unified vision of
the Whole. We will be failing in our duty if we
don’t bring out the Golden keys hidden in Karma
yoga by which even the commonest among us can
work one’s way to deep sa!sfac!on, discovering in
our daily work an elixir for the growth and expan-
sion of our total personality and to use the same
as instrument for the service of the na!on and our
people.
Every human being must inherit the treasure
which the Cosmic intelligence has made available
to man from !me to !me. Swami Vivekananda
was the foremost ini!ator of this world level in-
terac!on who, with open heart and arms shared
with the world outside as much as he could, of
the invaluable science and technology of living
which we had perfected as part of our spiritual
heritage. His efforts uncovered for the world
(including Indian) not only the great beauty, sci-
en!fic validity of Reality but also made the world
understand that progress, to be real and mean-
ingful has to be achieved at two levels, internal
as well as external, not separately but together.
Science has progressed much since then and eve-
ry one of its discoveries has only underscored
Swamiji’s observa!ons.
There are several defini!ons for Karma yoga.
Karma yoga is the method of a/aining perfec-
!on, freedom, bliss and blessedness through
work. Karma yoga is the union of our lower self
with the higher self through work. In simpler
terms Karma yoga is a purposeful ac!on animat-
ed by a universal mo!ve. But the best and most
comprehensive of defini!ons has been given by
Swami Vivekananda which we find most incorpo-
rated in his famous words.
“Each soul is poten!ally divine. The goal in life is
to manifest this divinity by controlling nature
external and internal. Do it by work or worship;
psychic control or philosophy, by one or more or
all of these- and be free. This is the whole of reli-
gion. Doctrines or dogmas or rituals, or books, or
temples, or forms are but secondary details.”
Each one of us have three facets to our person-
ality- propelled from within by an infinite, eternal
spiritual force. It expresses itself in the intellect
as intelligence ( knowledge , wisdom), in our
mind as emo!ons and the variety of feelings and
at our ac!ons. Our total development should
also be threefold.
ABi-monthlybulletinof11VivekanandaKendraVedicVision
To 1. Achieve the maximum perfec!on and de-
velopment at the individual level,
2. Relate oneself with the whole of crea!on
through our posi!ve interac!ons and
3. Ul!mately pave the way to reach out to
the peak of evolu!on by realizing oneself to be
the part and parcel of that Ul!mate , Truth, Bliss,
Godhood or by whatever name one may opt to
call it.
Swami Vivekananda used the words “ be free”
with special emphasis and caught the a/en!on
of the West at one stroke. The idea was so ap-
pealing to them, all the more because they had
just begun to taste, in a very elementary way,
freedom from bondage, ignorance, wants and so
on. That could indeed be prime mo!va!on to all
of us., as it truly ‘freedom’ that everyone is look-
ing for through knowledge, through love or
through ac!on.
I would presently dwell on one par!cular as-
pect only as it is very per!nent in our na!onal
context, when as men!oned earlier, in spite of
being the ci!zens of a sovereign republic, our
people have not learnt to shake off the shackles
of slavery with the result they remain backward,
weak, ignorant, poor and above all bere0 of hu-
man dignity, plodding along a lack luster life. All
our problems are offshoots of this one.
Second injunc!on calls upon man to give up his
preoccupa!on with the result of the ac!on. Why
should not one get a/ached to the result? Firstly
the real result of a work is subjec!ve, in the reac-
!on it creats in our mental stuff. Desire for a fruit
disturbs the equanimity of the mind and slowly
eats its way into our efficiency. Worries of the
past , excitement in the present , anxiety for the
future, all these side reac!ons are generated in
the mind which gets result oriented. Where
there is desire for a par!cular result mind be-
comes a/ached to that and slowly the act of
working loses its joy and charm and above all
its purifying power. Net result is we are
dragged into monotony, frustra!on and dis-
sa!sfac!on not only with oneself but with the
world around. On the other hand unburdened
from the anxiety for the result of one is able to
express oneself in ac!on more skillfully, sys-
tema!cally and fully. Every ac!on then turns to
be a subjec!ve exercise to gain inner strength,
to grow inward towards the Infinite Self within.
When a/en!on is shi0ed from the result,
which implies ‘taking> to giving and serving-
ac!on becomes a sacrifice, a yajna and our
whole life changes its colour. It adds to itself a
new dignity, power, fulfillment and greatness.
A new dimension is opened up. In fact that is
very purpose of living and working. With quali-
ta!ve
im-
provement in the ‘subjec!ve’, there is a simul-
taneous be/erment at the objec!ve level.
‘Yoga Karmasu Kousalam’. Karma Yoga leads to
a rare all round excellence. Even the most insig-
nificant daily ac!vity becomes an act of wor-
ship, of prayer, of medita!on. Feelings of hap-
“Each soul is poten!ally divine. The

ABi-monthlybulletinof12VivekanandaKendraVedicVision
piness, calmness and freedom pervade the mind.
Thus just this one aspect of Karmayoga when prac-
!ced sincerely makes one a Master of ac!on, a
force to be reckoned with a benedic!on to the so-
ciety.
The third point is, what should be the mo!va!on
for work then? Let good ac!ons flow out of us nat-
urally, say the scriptures. Right ac!on should help
us to manifest the best of quali!es in us- or divini-
ty as Swami Vivekananda puts it. An ac!on is good
if it upli0s the doer and produces maximum happi-
ness to great number of people. It automa!cally
becomes a tangible asser!on of Truth. If our
thoughts, words or deeds put awall of narrowness
around us, making us aloof and separate from the
rest of the world we deny our divine self, no
ma/er what that ac!on is. Such ac!ons are de-
struc!ve and unspiritual. Our work should help us
to remove the barrier of egoism, must help us to
realise more and more the fundamental unity, the
Oneness which is behind the apparently diversified
Universe. Swami Vivekananda therefore says,
“Expansion is life, Contrac!on is death”, “Love is
life , Hatred is death”, “Knowledge is life, Igno-
rance is death”.
Selfish mo!va!ons hold within, anxiety and fear
of disappointment,. Fear makes us slaves. It is fear-
lessness, it is selflessness that makes us masters.
Selfishness coupled with egoism have turned us
today into a na!on of cowards, slavish brutes.
The most important is the declara!on with which
the sloka starts, “You have right only to ac!on”. To
understand this statement we have to understand
something of the vedan!c idealism, essen!als of
yogic or scien!fic approach to life.
Yoga helps us to synchronize our spirit, mind and
senses. The idealism and understanding of our in-
tellect should reflect the characteris!cs of the spir-
it on truth. What are these characteris!cs?. At
this point Indian philosophy puts to shame
the discoveries of modern physics by its prec-
edence of more than 5000 years. To men!on
just a few fundamental parallels-
1. Indivisibility of substance- Ekam sat-
The material and efficient cause of the uni-
verse is One, ma/er, energy , mind, con-
sciousness- all stand unified into one.
2. Universality: It is this one that has mani-
fested into the many. Really speaking, there is
no crea!on of anything new. There are only
manifesta!ons- transforma!ons of one into
many. That means anything in this universe is
interrelated.
3. Non objec!ve- Where there exists only
one infinite unbreakable Whole, where is the
ques!on of subject or object. A new Omni
ejec!ve vision must replace the old approach
based on subject/object differences. The word
exploita!on has no place in the dic!onary of
Karma yoga.
These are the characteris!cs of the Truth, of
the Spirit, that should influence the thoughts
of the mind, percep!ons of the senses and
ac!on of our organs. Karmayoga thus be-
comes not only spiritualized ac!vity but a tru-
ly scien!fic approach to work or ac!on which
though directed externally is really a force
opera!ng within. In the fullness of spirit there
is no !me or place for desire. Desires make us
move away from the subject to the world of
objects, which have only a rela!ve existence.
When more and more of our ac!ons conform
to the characteris!cs of the spirit, more and
more we move towards freedom and real
happiness. Thus in Karmayoga we work out-
wardly but grow inwardly. Thus Karma yoga
ABi-monthlybulletinof13VivekanandaKendraVedicVision
becomes a work, a prayer, a medita!on, an yajna,
all rolled into one, where there is neither a giver
nor a receiver. One just excels in work deriving the
joy in the sheer act of working.
It is from this view point that Gita tells us that one
has right only to work. It is just a statement of
Truth, a scien!fic fact. It is the whole that ma/ers.
“ Par!cular” has no separate existence at all. From
this height of awareness is there any thing – mate-
rial or work- that we can claim to be ‘mine’. We
are all- big or small, rich or poor- shareholders of
that one spiritual treasure-Omniscent, omnipotent
eternal and infinite. That is why Upanishads called
mankind as “Amritasya putrah”-children of immor-
tality- a term which Swami Vivekananda used with
so much of effec!veness in the lectures he deliv-
ered in the West.
At the same there is a will in man to choose the
right goal and the right means to achieve it. Thus
every scope is provided for self effort, self unfold-
ment, self realisa!on- thus making human effort
precious and valuable. We can make our mar our
des!ny. No God or extraneous power can interfere
with it really.
Summing up , true reward of work is in the act of
right working, in the act of right willing, in channel-
izing the posi!ve forces in into One- in conformity
with the Truth or Self within. Once one has made
the right choice, fixed the right goal and decided
the right means there remains nothing more to be
done. Educa!on, guidance, upbringing, habits- all
contribute towards this righteous living, in devel-
oping a really posi!ve character.
Thus Karmayoga insists on spiritual orienta!on. By
its close associa!on with ritualis!c religiosity
over the millennia unfortunately spirituality
earned for self a bad name. Buddha released
it from clutches of ritualis!c religion and
made it stand on its own. It was given to Swa-
mi Vivekananda to update it and project it to
the world co-extensive with the modern sci-
en!fic enquiry into the Unity of Existence and
uphold it for one and all as a science for self
management, self unfoldment, leading to
health , happiness and harmony within peace
without.
The mechanis!c world of view of Cartesian-
Newtonian science is giving place to a new
‘paradigm’ of Reality- to a more holis!c con-
cept of Reality. To suite the emerging system
view of life, mind, consciousness and evolu-
!on, a new conceptual frame work is to be
created. This frame work will have to be nec-
essarily spiritual in its ul!mate nature, neces-
sita!ng a restructuring of human personality
and our priori!es
I would like end this talk with the words of
that modern seer Fritgof Capra:
“…………..the world view implied by
modern physics is inconsistent with our pre-
sent society, which does not reflect the har-
monious interrelatedness we observe in na-
ture. To achieve such a state of dynamic bal-
ance, a radically different social and economic
structure will be needed: a cultural revolu!on
in the true sense of the word. The survival of
our whole civiliza!on may depend on whether
we can bring out such a change.”
“All differences in this world are of degree, and not of kind, because oneness is the
secret of everything.” ― Swami Vivekananda
