According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heating and cooling your home uses more energy and costs more money than any other system in your home—typically making up about 54% of your utility bill.

No matter what kind of heating and cooling system you have in your house, you can save money and increase your comfort by properly maintaining and upgrading your equipment using the whole-house approach. By combining proper equipment maintenance and upgrades with recommended insulation, air sealing, and thermostat settings, you can cut your energy use for heating and cooling—and reduce environmental emissions—from 20%-50%.

HEATING & COOLING TIPS:

• Set your programmable thermostat as low as is comfortable in the winter and as high as is comfortable in the summer, as well as when you’re sleeping or away from home.• Clean or replace filters on furnaces and air conditioners once a month or as recommended. • Keep bushes, leaves and other debris away from the outside unit of your air conditioner, so that it can draw air into the system.• Clean supply air registers, as needed; make sure they’re not blocked by furniture, carpeting, drapes, etc.• Turn off kitchen, bath, and other exhaust fans within 20 minutes after you are done cooking or bathing; when replacing exhaust fans, consider installing high-efficiency, low-noise models.• During winter, keep the draperies and shades on your south-facing windows open during the day to allow the sunlight to enter your home and closed at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.• During summer, keep the window coverings closed during the day to block the sun’s heat.• Have your heating and cooling systems serviced annually by a reputable air conditioning company.

MAINTENANCE FACTS & TIPS:

• Without regular maintenance an air conditioner loses about 5% of its original efficiency for each year of operation. But you can recover most of that lost efficiency through regular service. • Studies show that with regular tune-ups a unit will maintain up to 95% of its original efficiency. The cost of an annual tune-up is recovered very quickly in savings on your monthly electric bill and reduced repair costs. •The service check (tune-up) should include cleaning the condensing unit coils, checking the amp draw of the compressor, checking the fan motors, checking that belts are well adjusted, and checking the system operating pressures and temperatures against the manufacturer’s specifications.• One of the most important items to check is the refrigerant level (also known as Freon). The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) recommends that coolant levels be checked every year. • According to a Texas A&M study, a 23% refrigerant undercharge could result in a 52% efficiency loss!

All equipment, even the most reliable, needs routine maintenance. Just like a car, your air conditioning and heating equipment requires regular tune-ups to run properly. But unlike our vehicles, that we get in and drive often or that we see on our street every day, our heating and cooling equipment is often “out of sight, out of mind.” We often don’t think about it until it stops working. Complicated equipment, like today’s air conditioners, benefit in many ways from annual service. They recover much of their lost efficiency, they are less likely to suffer a major break down, they have a longer life span, they increase your comfort, and they operate for less money.

Save Your Vision Month is proclaimed each year to focus the public’s attention on the vital role that vision plays in daily living and the importance of professional eye care to preserve good vision.In honor of Save Your Vision Month, the American Optometric Association (AOA) reminds Americans that caring for your eyes includes preventing eye injuries at home, not just on the job.The Eye-Q® survey found that nearly two-thirds of Americans do not wear safety glasses or goggles when working on home improvement

projects and about 45% of all eye injuries occur in the home (according to the 5th Annual Eye Injury Snapshot conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Ocular Trauma). These injuries were caused by activities such as home repairs, cleaning, yard work and cooking. Eyes can also be damaged by sun exposure as well as by chemicals, dust and projectiles.

Building good eye safety habits are clearly crucial in reducing the number of eye injuries at home. The key word is habits. Where should a person start with establishing good eye safety habits?• The easiest habit is wearing protective eyewear. In fact, doing so will prevent a

whopping 90% of eye injuries. Among all reported eye injuries, more than 78% of the people involved were not wearing protective eyewear. Obviously, the first habit to establish is to purchase and wear protective eyewear.

• The second essential habit for eye safety is prevention. The National Society to Prevent Blindness estimates that 90% of all eye injuries can be prevented. One of the best ways to prevent eye injury is by following manufacturer’s directions and warnings. Another way is to use common sense. For example, pick up rocks and sticks before mowing, don’t peer into a bag of hot microwave popcorn, and keep children from running with sharp objects.

Eye safety – whether at home or in the work place – is proven to prevent vision loss. While it’s important to practice good eye health habits, the best line of defense is to visit a doctor of optometry on a regular basis for comprehensive eye exams to help ensure healthy vision.
