Reading Focus: Main Idea and Key DetailsThe main idea tells what a story is mostly about. The details in the story are the smaller ideas in a story that help support the main idea. You can think of main idea like a whole pizza and the details like the toppings.Today we will read the passage Going to the Park below and find the main idea and details.

Use a piece of paper to draw the graphic organizer to the right of the passage. Inside the main idea square, write what the passage is mostly about. Inside each detail bubble, write down a small detail from the text that supports the main idea.

Social Studies

In the fall we learned about maps. Remember that a map is a drawing or picture of an area. The map below is drawn from a bird’s-eye view. It shows how this neighborhood would appear to a bird looking down while flying over it. Notice the key on the right side of the map. The key can help you find different places on the map. Today you will use the key to read the map below and answer questions.

Use a piece of paper to write your answers to the following questions:1. Which is closer to the house: the store or the garden?2. Imagine you live in the house. What would you pass on your way to school if you took the

shortest route?3. What would you pass on your way to school if you took the longest route?4. Draw a symbol that should be added to the key to show a park.

This week you will be writing a poem. This poem does not rhyme. Your poem will be made up of four lines, and each line will be a different type of sentence. Here is an example of a finished poem. Mine is about a frog.

Step 1:Think of things that are almost always the same color. For example: a stop sign is red, an elephant is grey, and a school bus is yellow.Step 2:On a piece of paper, make a list of 5 things along with their color.Select one of the items on your list to write about.

Follow this format to write the first line of your poem:Line one: The first line of your poem is a statement and it tells information about your subject, including its color. This is called a declarative sentence and it ends with a period. You will write lines two ,three and four of your poem on Thursday.

Write them in order on a piece of paper. See the example schedule for help.Next, brainstorm the time in which these activities occur.Write the times next to each of your activities.Remember! We write our hour first, followed by a colon ( : )and then the minutes. For example:Wake up – 7:00AM (morning)Dinner – 6:00PM (afternoon/evening)
