What is SOL Ready—Mathematics Practice?SOL Ready—Mathematics Practice focuses on the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) that may be assessed on the state test. By completing this book, students develop mastery of the grade-level Standards of Learning in mathematics. To develop this mastery, students solve a variety of multiple-choice problems that are correlated to the Standards of Learning.

How does SOL Ready—Mathematics Practice correlate to the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning? The grade 4 student book has three practice tests, each with 60 questions that address the four mathematics Reporting Categories assessed in grade 4:• Number and Number Sense• Computation and Estimation• Measurement and Geometry• Probability, Statistics, Patterns, Functions,

and Algebra

SOL Ready—Mathematics Practice, Grade 4 presents problems that correlate directly with the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning.

How should I use SOL Ready—Mathematics Practice? You may choose to use Practice Test 1 as a pretest, to identify student weaknesses and strengths. After providing focused instruction, use Practice Tests 2 and 3 as posttests, from which you may evaluate student progress and identify areas that need further study.

How do I introduce my students to SOL Ready—Mathematics Practice?Provide each student with a student book, a calculator (for the calculator section only), a ruler, scratch paper, two sharpened pencils, and an eraser. Then have students read all the information on the inside front cover of the student book, paying particular attention to the tips on answering multiple-choice problems. Before having students begin work, inform them they may have as much time as they need to complete each part of each practice test.

How do I simulate test-taking procedures using SOL Ready—Mathematics Practice?Explain to students that each practice test will be divided into two parts. In the first part, students will not be allowed to use their calculators. Tell students to watch for the STOP sign at the end of the first part of the test. Once all students have finished the first part of the test, pass out calculators, then have students begin the second part of the test.

Have students read the sample question on the first page of the practice test. Go over the sample question with the students. Answer any questions students have about the sample question.

Where do students record their answers?Students record their answers on the answer form at the back of the student book. Have students remove the answer form and fill in the personal-information section. Ensure that each student knows how to fill in the answer bubbles. Remind students that if they change an answer, they should fully erase their first answer. Completed answer forms are on pages 3 and 4 of this teacher guide.

What is the correction procedure?Correct and review the answers to multiple-choice questions as soon as possible after students have completed a practice test. As you review the answers, explain concepts that students may not fully understand. Encourage students to discuss the thought process they used to answer the questions. When answers are incorrect, help students understand why their reasoning was faulty. Students sometimes answer incorrectly because of a range of misconceptions about the strategy required to answer the question. Discussing why the choices are incorrect will help students understand the correct answer.

How should I use the results of SOL Ready—Mathematics Practice? This book can be a useful diagnostic tool for identifying mathematics standards that need further study and reinforcement in order to obtain proficiency. Use the Correlations to the Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning, on pages 5 and 6, to identify the standard that each question practices and evaluates. For students who answer a question incorrectly, provide additional practice.
