Local swimmer sets sights on 2016 Olympics Sevenoaks swimmer, Sarah Kew has revealed she aims to compete at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. The 14-year-old expressed her excitement at swimming alongside a number of Great British athletes during a competition at the Olympics Aquatics Centre and was even lucky enough to meet and receive advice from Rebecca Adlington, Fran Halsall and Hannah Miley. The determined teenager hopes to get to the Europeans within the next two years and then compete at the 2016 Olympics, which she says is her ultimate goal.

Vine brothers get hairy

A local author has released her latest book, focusing on Christmas activities for children. Vickie Howie from Otford, wrote her paperback, Seasonal Activities for Christmas Festivities to help teachers in schools and churches explore the holiday with children. The book aims to allow children to explore the true meaning of Christmas and provides short dramas

based around themes, which can be performed. The children’s author is a trained solicitor and used to work in publishing at Oxford University Press but decided to focus on her writing.

Things got rather hairy at Vine HQ last month as brothers Charlie and Chris de Rusett set themselves the Movember challenge to raise money and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer. During November, we watched their upper lips blossom and eventually flower – Charlie (left), Vine Publishing Ltd’s chief executive, opted for the handle-bar style while his brother Chris (right), from our business development team, sported a look that was somewhat...sparser. The boys have both done a fantastic job and there is still time to donate.

Sevenoaks shoppers can enjoy free parking throughout the district on Saturday 15 and 22 December in a bid to boost the local economy and support local traders in the run up to Christmas. On these two dates, all car park and on-street ticket machines will be closed off, although shoppers are still expected to adhere to the maximum stay allowed.

Second Hand Dance returns to Sevenoaks Library in January with an exciting new event. The aim of the session is to get dads dancing with their children – no mums allowed! During the two hour session there will be storytelling, music, art and blogging. The session takes place on Saturday 19 January; from 2-4pm. Entry costs £3 per adult and £1.50 per child.

Back by popular demand the Christmas Wreath Workshop returns to the Stag this year, it runs from 9.30am-12.30pm on Friday 7 December. Equipment and materials are provided and you’ll have three hours of professional tuition to help you create a spectacular wreath. Local School creates Gingerbread House

Sevenoaks mum’s baking challenge

Children from each class at Fosse Bank School decorated personal gingerbread tiles which were used to create a large gingerbread house for Demelza Children’s Hospice who will be using it as the focus for the candle-light Christmas Ceremony for their sick children and families. Head of Fosse Bank School, Mrs Gillian Lovatt-Young said, “Fosse Bank School pupils thoroughly enjoyed decorating their tiles and are delighted that they will make a small contribution to improving the Christmas celebrations for the children at Demelza and their families.”

Local mum, Elizabeth Ryan has set herself a culinary challenge to bake every recipe from The Great British Bake Off book, How to Bake and to share her delectable results through her baking blog. The piano teacher from Sevenoaks, who is at her happiest when whipping up a tasty creation in the kitchen, is aiming to bake one recipe each week. Elizabeth hopes the challenge will enhance her baking knowledge and introduce her to dishes she’d never thought of baking before, the rest of the family should certainly enjoy the challenge.

Westerham based business, Blagden joined the Lord Mayor’s Show in London last month to celebrate 150 years in the UK chemicals market. Joined by their customers and key supply partners the Blagden staff took part in a three mile parade during which a traditional Routemaster bus carried the name of Blagden through the heart of the city.

Numerous local tourism and hospitality businesses have gathered to support the Kent Breakfast campaign. The scheme aims to encourage the county’s B&Bs, hotels, restaurants, pubs and cafes to make sure that at least 60 per cent of the ingredients are sourced from within Kent. Businesses signing up to the free scheme are given free promotional material, so they can market themselves to guests as a user of locally sourced produce.

A special festive themed craft fair will be held at the Stag on Saturday 8 December. The fair will give visitors the opportunity to buy fine local crafts and delicacies ahead of the Christmas period. Sevenoaks composer, Margaret Rizza has released her latest classical album. Margaret, who didn’t start writing music until she was in her sixties, has topped the classical chart with her previous albums and hopes to have the same success with Mysterium Amoris. Margaret is already working on her next collection of music which is due to be released in spring 2013.

Fire-fighters issue safety warning

Following a house fire in Sevenoaks caused by an extension lead that was not fully unwound, Kent fire-fighters have issued an urgent warning. As people start to decorate their homes with Christmas lights and decorations the risk of fire increases. The fire-fighters urge homeowners to not overload sockets, use circuit breakers and make sure extension leads are fully unwound.

Julie Stevens from Sevenoaks is a keen walker and nature lover who has devoted much of her time to charity work. From a young age Julie helped out with charities, including a junior version of Rotary (Rotaract), maintaining elderly people’s gardens and assisting in mentally handicapped homes when she was part of a guides group. Her work continued with her children at school, assisting with reading clubs and helping out in the PTA. This year Julie volunteered for the Paralympics, helping to greet over 7,000 visitors at Brands Hatch and managing crowds as the torch passed through Sevenoaks. She has spent six years volunteering in the gardens at Chartwell and participated in planting 2000 trees at Polhill in a nationwide challenge to plant a million trees in an hour. This year will also mark Julie’s fifth year at Cards for good Causes, assisting annually with the sales of charity Christmas cards.Recently Julie hasn’t been able to help out as much as she would like but she still volunteers at Chartwell and visits an elderly lady weekly – she is hoping to go back to volunteering more in the new year.

Knocking down barriers to growth

As Business Minister, my biggest responsibility this month was introducing the new growth and infrastructure Bill, which has just been given its second reading in Parliament.The purpose of the bill is to support local growth and local jobs by tackling the barriers that restrict investment and growth and hinder long-term sustainable development. People often bemoan the perceived lack of ‘joined-up government’ but six government departments worked together to create this bill. it will make the planning system quicker and more efficient, accelerate the investment in modern infrastructure – including broadband and energy generation – and introduce a new type ofemployee ownership. The bill addresses several problems. Our planning system is too slow: currently fewer than 60% of major planning

applications are decided within the statutory 13 weeks. Some councils are excellent, others perform very badly. This bill will speed up decision making.Second, thousands of homes are stalled in ‘section 106’ negotiations. This bill enables planning obligations relating to affordable housing to be renegotiated quickly. Stalled schemes are not affordable housing but non-existent housing. This should unlock 75,000 new homes. Finally, the bill employees share ownership and can exchange some of their employment rights in return for shares worth up to £50,000 in the business which are exempt from capital gains tax. Taken individually, the changes this bill makes may seem small. However, when taken together we expect them to have a substantial cumulative impact that will help get this economy on the move again.

Tell us a bit about your new book

I’m currently in the editing stage of Feral Youth, my new book about the London riots, due to be published in spring 2013. I felt they were a product of concealed issues and that the underlying issues were ignored.

What made you want to write about the London riots?

I live in Ealing in London and recall the riots happening vividly; I remember the aftermath and the media reporting on the stolen TVs and trainers but noone was asking why this was happening. The underlying issues are still there so these riots could happen again.

You grew up in Sevenoaks, what do you like to do when you come back here?

I visit a lot; we usually go out on bike rides with my entire family, although it’s embarrassing how my dad is fitter than all of us! After, we tend to eat a lot and counteract the exercise. My sister’s also just moved back to the area so we’re all chipping in at the moment with decorating.

'T is the season of goodwill and the giving of gifts, and nobody wants

to appear a Scrooge but it is worth being cautious if you are planning on handing over money to friends or family members to assist with a house purchase. In this age of economic downturn and rising redundancies, parents are increasingly offering to help financially with their children’s house purchases. But this act of generosity can sometimes backfire. Take the case last year where a mother went to the extreme measures of suing her daughter over a share in a property. She had provided the majority of the purchase monies for a property which was registered in the sole name of her daughter. Mother and daughter were the best of friends at the time and no charge or declaration of trust setting out mother’s interest was registered. Some years later the property was worth significantly more money (approx. £3 million) and the daughter had now married a man not of her mother’s choosing! The mother applied to the courts claiming entitlement to a 93% share of the property on the basis that she had provided most of the purchase monies.

The courts took the view that as the property was registered in

the sole name of the daughter and no charges or declarations of trust had been registered or signed, the mother’s only claim was to the repayment of the balance of the loan (approx. £100,000).

So what lessons can be learned? Most importantly each party should obtain legal advice and look to protect their interests. For parents wishing to assist their children in a house purchase they will need to decide if the money is a loan or a gift. If it is to be a loan they must ensure that their interest is registered correctly, for example, by way of a declaration of trust or legal charge. The consent of any institutional lender will have to be obtained. However, if the intention is for the money to be a gift then this should be noted in writing at the time of the purchase and the parents must realise they will have no further interest in the property or how or when it is disposed regardless of their children’s choice of partner!

In the bleak midwinter!As the cold winds whip through the trees, parting the bare branches from the last few autumnal leaves, it is clear that winter is arriving. Perhaps it is due to Christmas falling at the end of the month that December always seems to put a smile on people’s faces.

The george & Dragon, Chipstead is a definite winter bolt hole. When we first took it over three years ago, it had a downstairs layout, with all areas central around the bar and a large open fire that sealed the deal for me. now, three years on, after all the work we have done with the upstairs restaurant, private dinning space and spectacular alfresco dining in the herb garden, it is clear that the fireplace is for most, the pull of the pub. The expressions of joy that cross customers' faces as they clock eyes on the bar and then roaring fire simultaneously, always confirms for me that taking over the george & Dragon, Chipstead was the right choice.

Food throughout winter is always a welcome change from the summer abundance of soft fruit and popular summer vegetables, but it means we need to be a little more creative in our thinking. ultimately though, a good mix of slow cooked wonders along with exciting twists on classic ingredients always keeps the menu fresh and exciting.

Selecting the dishes for the Christmas party menu always takes priority of planning in December. We take particular pleasure in developing the last menu of the year, to ensure that new Year’s eve at the george and Dragon, Chipstead is a special affair.

Back by popular demand the casino theme will return to entertain guests dining at the george and Dragon, Chipstead this new Year. With some menu dishes finished and carved at the table and a selection of mini desserts to share, the menu is set to be the perfect conversation starter for a fun convivial atmosphere. interest has already been very high, so if you are thinking about joining us here at the george and Dragon, Chipstead this new Year’s eve please get in touch soon.

St Michael’s agrees that playing outside on a regular basis is fundamental to children’s progress whilst growing up. A recent National Trust study presented several reasons why schools should regularly take their learning outside. Playing out in the open air not only boosts problem-solving skills, concentration and self-discipline, but socially and emotionally it improves teamwork, reduces aggression and increases happiness. The study found that children under the age of 13 who took part in an environmental programme with their school, obtained better results in maths, reading and writing than those who do not.

Children who frequently play outside also grow up to care more about the environment, thus are more likely to carry out positive environmental actions, such as recycling and generally considering their surroundings. According to a study from the University of Essex, just five minutes of openair can generate improvements in a student’s well-being and self-esteem, particularly with young children. St Michael’s aim to get pupils outside daily, not surprising when their playing field is 90 acres of remarkable woodland in the Otford Hills. From roaming the forest surroundings and building camps to partaking in outdoor sports, the children are never short of fresh air and love to pull on their wellies and get out in the woods. Children are encouraged to be active learners from a young age. Whether they are writing descriptive stories in the woods, participating in science lessons on the Warren or playing in the leaves, they are always embracing the great outdoors. They even took their Diamond Jubilee celebrations outside, providing grandparents with a special tea party and maypole dancing in the playground.

As well as making the most of their idyllic woodland surroundings, St Michael’s pupils also participate in a number of educational nature-related day trips. Children in Reception recently took a trip to Godstone Farm; despite the grey weather they had a wonderful time contributing to a range of activities from petting chickens and feeding pigs to stroking rabbits and tractor rides. On another recent trip, Year 1 children had a great time visiting Bore Place’s organic farm and study centre where they learnt about their working towards sustainable solutions in farming, the environment and education. Findings from a survey by Play England indicate that almost half of parents questioned believe their children have less time to play outside than they did. At St Michael’s, staff ensure that children don’t miss out on priceless outdoor playtime, in and out of school. Alfred Wainwright once said, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” Give children a pair of wellies and a raincoat and they’ll have a delightful time jumping in puddles and getting to grips with nature first-hand.

N estled in the charming village of Otford, St Michael’s Prep sits comfortably amongst the classical Kentish countryside.

The woodland that surrounds St Michael’s has always been part of the children’s learning environment and the new pre-prep - built into the landscape - will ensure the school continues to embrace the natural world that they are fortunate enough to boast as their backdrop. The building, which will be completed in the New Year, has been designed to echo the shifting needs of the pupils whilst maintaining the school’s traditional values. Sustainability was a key factor during the planning of the building and the new school resolves to give the children more space to play and freedom to move from inside to outside. As well as providing more space for the children to participate in digging and growing vegetables, the school will have a ‘green roof ’ using sun tubes to

capture the natural light. The new build will include a library, music rooms and an art and design room, allowing children to explore and be creative. The new classrooms, which are centred around a strikingly beautiful old copper beech, will comprise sheltered outdoor areas, permitting children to move effortlessly from inside to outside. A large multi-purpose hall was crucial to St Michael’s for group performances, sports and simply giving pupils the freedom to run and play. The new dining room will promote family-style dining, encouraging children to develop their table manners and allowing them to eat in a ‘”grown-up style” canteen. There is also a balcony overlooking the woodland for alfresco dining on sunny days. Embedded into the hillside with wood-clad walls, through the school’s design plans the architects have created a building that truly blends with the natural landscape. The entire design has been expertly built to guarantee pupils at St Michael’s the best education both in and outside of the classroom.

“We decided that we wanted to write a story using the woods as our setting and rather than imagining this setting we went to the woods, listened and looked around. The children began to think of adjectives to describe the wood setting and we played games to help them understand what playing in a wood is like. On returning to the classroom we made our own ‘woods’ setting using the children’s ideas. They described the setting with their adjectives and these words were hung from the ceiling. From this ‘woodland adventure’ the children wrote some brilliant pieces of writing describing the woodland setting.” Bethany Shaw, Yr 1 Class Teacher

Kindergarden children were treated to an exciting surprise when the school discovered a brown long-eared bat living above their classroom. In order to look after the protected species the school constructed an impressive home in the roofing for the bat, so now the children are closer to nature than ever before.

nativity plays have been an element of British primary-school life for years but a recent survey has revealed that schools are ditching the nativity in favour of non-religious productions such as Scrooge and Snow White.

The traditions of turkey, mulled wine and Christmas trees – the victorians started them all. gift giving was previously more associated with new Year but moved as Christmas became more important to the victorians.

Yule logs are often considered the oldest festive tradition; in england they were originally burnt over the 12 days of Christmas, to mark the beginning of the festivities. now, the tradition is symbolised by a log-shaped chocolate cake.

You will, without a doubt be surprised by unexpected visitors throughout Christmas time. Have the board games at the ready and enough food for plenty to avoid last-minute moments of panic and stress.

2012 marks 80 years since the royal Christmas message tradition begun and 60 years since the Queen’s first speech, in 1952 her message was broadcasted live on the radio from her study in norfolk.

Since the recession, many charities have been affected by a fall in donations and cuts to grants from local councils. This has been hard for small charities, especially at Christmas when cash-strapped families struggle to find room in their budgets to donate. Nicol Banin looks at four home-grown charities who do amazing work in our community over the festive season, reminding us to give to those less fortunate than ourselves

Brighter Futures

Due to bereavement or family moving away, many older people face a Christmas alone without mobility or transport. Brighter Futures,

part of Voluntary Action Maidstone, are a charity which aim to help older people aged 65 years and over in Maidstone and the surrounding area be more independent, less isolated and more engaged in the community and they work to make Christmas a pleasant and social time for the older people in our community. Danny Hewis, project manager for Brighter Futures, explains, “the service we provide is not care work, we focus on the wellbeing of the individual, providing them with that person-to person contact that can make all the difference to a lonely elderly person.” Their projects, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, include weekly home visits and phone calls from volunteer ‘befrienders’, planned days out and regular shopping trips to local supermarkets for those who have no access to transport. Christmas is a busy time for the team; they plan trips to the pantomime and send out over 800 Christmas cards to older people in the area. The focus of the season, however, is the brilliant Christmas party that they throw for up to 100 elderly guests. The yearly event is always a hit with the guests who are all provided with transport, a delicious meal, a gift and, most importantly, the chance to spend Christmas with other people in a warm and friendly environment.

The Bridge Trust

D espite being off the cold streets, the festive season can still be a very difficult

one for the residents at The Bridge Trust, a Christian-based charity who work to rehouse homeless people in West Kent. Often estranged from family and friends, the team makes every effort to ensure the residents know that they are cared for at this time of year. Single homeless people often miss out on housing from local councils which is why The Bridge Trust aims to reach out to this vulnerable group and help them to rebuild their lives. Their five residential properties, based within the communities of Tonbridge, Southborough and Tunbridge Wells, provide them with temporary accommodation while their dedicated team helps them to find permanent housing, learn life skills, and crucially, find a job. Over the Christmas period, the team regularly visit the residents and on Christmas Eve, get everyone together to prepare a home-cooked Christmas dinner - a luxury that many cannot afford. The Bridge Trust also works with local associations like The Lions Club in Tonbridge who donate Christmas hampers every year and the local church youth club who hand-make Advent calendars for them. These kind gestures may seem small but they make all the difference to the residents, proving that the outside world has not forgotten about them.

Royal London Society for Blind People (RLSB)

C hristmas is always a magical time of year for children but for those who cannot see, it can become quite limited. This is why every

year RLSB, a charity aimed at helping young blind and partially sighted children in and around London and Kent, turn Christmas into a sensory delight to be enjoyed by everyone. RLSB are an inspirational charity based in Sevenoaks who aim to help blind and partially sighted young people realise their aspirations and achieve their goals. Their flagship nursery in Sevenoaks works with children between the ages of two and five to teach them key skills in an accessible, multisensory way and their social groups for older children offer a range of activities encouraging independence. Craig Linton, head of fundraising explains that early intervention is crucial for blind children in order to, “prevent bright, aspirational children from falling into a cycle of depression, exclusion and unemployment”. Every year the hard-working team at RLSB ensure the children experience the textures, smells, sounds and tastes of Christmas. This can be anything from the feel of Santa’s beard to the wonderful smell of the Christmas tree. The children love to get involved - the younger ones perform in a nativity play while the older ones are thrown a Christmas party and go on on assisted shopping trips so they can independently buy presents for their loved ones.

Rescued Animals in Need (RAIN)

W inter and Christmas carry many risks for pets, especially as it is over this period that many are lost or abandoned. RAIN, a small volunteer-

run charity based in the Sevenoaks area, aim to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home as many of these vulnerable animals as resources permit as well as give advice to pet owners about the extra precautions to take at this time of year. RAIN aims to raise awareness about pet safety over winter and the festive season through distributing leaflets and running stalls at local events in the area. The animal welfare team advise pet owners, “any animal that is out when it is cold should have shelter, extra food, plenty of bedding and access to unfrozen drinking water. As part of the family, many pets want to join in with the fun of Christmas but just be aware that they need a calm place to retreat to and that pulling crackers, party poppers and champagne corks can scare them. "Animals should not be Christmas presents but if you are given one, please make sure you get it neutered. RAIN runs a neutering programme in conjunction with local vets where the charity will help with the costs. Don’t let the price put you off!”

Don’t let the cold weather tempt you into hibernation over the festive season, a winter walk is a traditional British pleasure. Nicol Banin brings you a hand-picked

selection of some of Sevenoaks’s finest winter walks to enjoy

Knole Deer Park Walk grade: easy Distance: 3 miles (5km) Duration: 1-2 hours

This easy walk is family friendly and perfect for all ages and abilities. There is accessible parking as well as toilet and restaurant facilities when open. Dogs are welcome on a lead and the route is also suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Start at the front gate of the house and follow the trail along the wall to the corner where you will see hundreds of ant hills in the valley. From there the trail takes you onto Chestnut Walk - look out for a very wide, ancient oak pollard, it is the park’s second largest tree and one of its oldest. Follow the trail to the Broad Walk area of the park, carrying on back to the greensand Way and passing the Deer park along the way. This is kent’s only remaining deer park and home to the same fallow deer herd since at least the 15th century. Although lovely to look at, it is important to remember no to approach, pet or feed the deer. Continue along this path until you eventually return back to the front of Knole House.

Octavia Hill Centenary Trail West Distance: 6 miles (9.7km) grade: Moderate Duration: 3 hours

The rolling hills, woodlands and fields, combined with stunning views make this walk dedicated to co-founder of the National Trust, Octavia Hill, a peaceful and picturesque winter-walk for couples.

The trail begins at Toys Hill, a rich woodland area abundant in wildlife, and continues to the village of Crockham Hill where Octavia lived and Holy Trinity church where she is buried. Follow the route along to Mariners Hill where you can pause for a moment on the memorial seat and drink in the incredible panoramic views of the Weald before heading down the hill to Chartwell, Winston Churchill’s home from 1924 until his death in 1965. While you’re here, you might like to visit the hillside gardens which also offer wonderful views over the Weald. The final leg of the trail passes through the quaint French Street hamlet before finally leading you back to Toys Hill. if you are looking for a bite to eat, the Fox and Hounds pub is located just north of Toys Hill and has a menu bursting with fresh local produce.

Kemsing Walk grade: Moderate Distance: 6.5 miles (10.4km) Duration: 3.5 hours

This challenging 6.5 mile route, offering magnificent views across the Weald of Kent, is interspersed by village pubs and offers walkers making it a more scenic and rewarding alternative to the pub crawl.

Start your walk in the beautiful and historic village of kemsing and follow the trail across open farmland until you reach the hamlet of Heaverham where you will find the Chequers inn, a 15th century village pub which, with food ranging from british favourites to french-style dishes, also makes for a perfect lunch spot. Continue along the route past the St Clere’s estate and left up a steep path taking you through the north Downs Way and towards Cotman’s Ash lane, where you can pause for a drink at The Rising Sun which, interestingly also has a small farm at the side of it. The route then continues past Otford Manor and down a steep path back into kemsing where where you can reward yourself at The Bell. Cosy armchairs and a roaring fire make it the ideal spot for putting your feet up with a well-deserved drink.

Word of warning: The paths ascending and descending The North Downs can be muddy and slippery after rain.

Q: What present can I get an elderly relative for Christmas ?

It’s often difficult to find something for an older relative – a tin of special christmas biscuits or chocolates, a bottle of sherry or whisky, or an item of clothing or apparel in green tartan are the usual suspects. But with a little more thought, you can give something that will delight and benefit you both in the coming year.

Practical gifts Although they may not have that ‘magic sparkle’ of Christmas, they can make a real difference to the life of an older relative. For example, doing those difficult to organise jobs such as getting the loft or windows insulated, fitting a grab rail to get in and out of the bath, or fixing access to the garden for spring. A bird table and feeders are great presents, as is planting bulbs ready for spring. If your relative doesn’t have a garden, a window box to provide a bit of winter or spring colour can really brighten up the outlook from a window.

Create a scrapbook Memories are very precious, particularly for older relatives who are finding it difficult to remember things. Putting together a scrapbook or photo album of family events, or purchasing old newspapers of significant events in your relative’s life (like a wedding date or the end of the war) is a lovely way of sharing with your relative and your children their reminiscences of the time.

Days out Trips to special events in January or February provide something to look forward to in those long, dark months at the start of the year. Booking tickets to local concerts or events can be a wonderful thing to look forward to. An annual membership to the National Trust, who have charming properties all around Sevenoaks, can set you up for a series of trips out together in the coming year.

Tech presentsTechnology is a tricky one – some older people are happy to embrace it but others aren’t. If your relative is comfortable learning to use new devices, an easy to use tablet might allow them to access your page on Facebook and see what your family is up to. Perhaps they may want to write their life story for the grandchildren as a project for 2013 or, with a little initial help, they could even use them to order their shopping online. Finally, the new range of smart TVs coming out this Christmas opens up a whole world of possibilities. For a really big present, treat them to one of these TVs and set it up for Skype so that you can all speak to long lost relatives, wherever they are, on Christmas Day.Happy Christmas from TerraBlu Homecare!

Enjoy an injury-free ski season and prepare yourself for the rigours of the mountain!

With winter well and truly upon us, many people will have booked an escape to the mountain ranges in search of snow, scenery and the adrenaline rush of winter sport. However, injury can strike; snow-sports related injuries have increased 21% over ten years (British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma & Arthroscopy Association). The most serious injuries sustained are damage to either the anterior cruciate or medial collateral ligaments of the knee. Some injuries can be attributed to modern ski equipment; boots can be unforgiving when falling at speeds. However, a major contribution is a lack of physical fitness. Whilst you cannot change the design of ski boots, you can prepare your body for the mountain. The mistake many individuals make is in viewing skiing as a holiday, rather than a sport. Research has found a variety of exercises that can assist in preventing injury. Some basic callisthenic (body weight) exercises include:

1) Wall squat hold – Your head, shoulders and hips should be touching the wall and your feet shoulder width apart, far enough from the wall so that when you begin the exercise your ankles are directly below the knee. Then, contract the buttock muscles to perform a posterior tilt of the pelvis. Hold for 20-30 seconds.

2) The Clam – Performing this correctly activates the gluteus medius muscle (hip), a key muscle in preventing knee injuries. Position your shoulders and buttocks against a wall or straight edge. legs should be

flexed at the knee, the soles of your feet in contact with the wall, one foot over and in line with the other. lift the top leg, maintaining the position of the feet, for four seconds. Pause at the top of the movement, and slowly bring the leg towards the starting position for three seconds. Perform 8-10 repetitions on each side.

3) Hip bridge – lie on your back on the floor, knees bent and feet apart at hip width. extend arms to the side, with palms facing down for support. From here the hips should be lifted through pushing down with the heels. The thighs, hips and torso should be aligned at a 45° angle with the floor. Hold for 20-30 seconds. Progress by extending the lower part of one leg.

The exercises may help but there are more options to improve your skiing performance: the addition of cardiovascular exercise, myofascial release and stretching would all lower your susceptibility to injury. W hich one is best? How much should I pay? Should I wait until

next week? Finding the right Christmas tree isn’t always easy. Most farms and stores will have a variety of trees, so how do you pick the right one?

The Norway Spruce is the cheapest and most popular tree but it’s prone to dropping needles so it needs watering regularly. The Blue Spruce has grown in status as it’s a lovely colour, holds its needles well and doesn’t cost much more.

It’s best to visit a stockist in

person so you can look at and feel the tree. Choose a freshly cut tree with bright needles, avoid trees with brown, dried

up needles. Give the tree a slight shake, if any needles

fall off, move on. A heavy tree is also a good sign, it means the tree is fresh

and contains a high volume of water.

Make sure your tree is in a well-lit area but where it

won’t overheat; a well cared for tree should last up to six weeks,

so what are you waiting for? Get the lights and baubles from the loft.

This is my last Mumblings column for 2012... and ever! Okay, dampening the dramatics a little, I have decided that it’s time

I handed the hallowed back page to someone else. Namely, someone who still lives in Sevenoaks. So, confession-time. I adore Sevenoaks, but I’ve not lived here for a little while and now that the kids aren’t even at school here, it seems wrong of me to hog this space. For many months, my mornings and afternoons were dominated by a 90-minute round trip to Dunton Green, made glorious all the more by road works up and down the A25 for what seemed like 182 years. But now, my school run is a 10-minute walk. While I don’t miss the driving (or the petrol bill), I miss our first Kentish town. We moved from London to Sevenoaks in 2008, me the same size as the removal van and in the final stages of pregnancy with my third child. That bulging bump is now a romping, stomping school boy, a Kentish man by birth. He was born in a little terraced house in Otford Road, delivered (more like caught in a net, it was so quick) by the finest Sennockian midwife. He was weighed on Sevenoaks Hospital’s scales by the heath visitors, went to his first playgroup in Otford Church Hall

and took his first swim in the toddler pool at Sencio (terrifying – he was like a mad man with helicopter arms on a challenge to drink as much the water as he could in 12 minutes). He helped me dig weeds at our allotment in a nearby village, picked his first ever self-chosen outfit at Baby Gap in Bligh’s Meadow (it was a ruched fuscia blouse – I was made

to return it) and ate his own weight in most of the restaurants in town from the moment he was weaned. His brother and sister made friends for life here, passed 11 pluses here, ran alongside deer here and didn’t walk past a single yellow crime sign on their way to school – unlike our city years We haven’t moved far, but just far enough that we’ve nudged into another Kentish community. But for all the above reasons and many more, Sevenoaks will always own my heart. So thank you for allowing me to fill your final pages with self-indulgent ramblings about rescuing stray

lambs, playing racially-sensitive music to pensioners, chasing chickens in my nightie, the fist-in-mouth gawkiness of my own childhood, the challenges and triumphs of my kids growing up, new schools, old schools and every other rant about other people’s driving that you have gamely endured.
