description

From acclaimed Canadian playwright Morris Panych comes this witty, cheeky, and gratifyingly macabre comedy that will touch your heart. Middle-aged curmudgeon Kemp receives a letter from his rich aunt, who writes him she is "old and dying"... or does it say "yodeling?" It's hard to tell – her handwriting isn't very good. But Kemp quits his job and crosses the country to ready her for death, beginning an outrageous series of missteps and misunderstandings that gives way to a surprising, poignant finish. Join us for this clever, glittering hit of the Edinburgh Fringe and London's West End.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

“Once you take off the mask, they’re all the same aren’t they? Needy little children, underneath,” says Kemp. And so we are. Great plays are made about people with great needs and a few, like Kemp and Grace – who have kept themselves apart from their fellows for so long - have needs so intense that their extremity is at once deeply moving and very comical. Comedy rises from surprise and recognition, but, at its root, comedy is cruel. When the pain we observe is truest and most intense, sometimes that’s when we laugh the hardest.

We who make theatre need each other as much as anyone. There is the Hollywood joke of the Prussian director in jodhpurs and riding boots insisting: “Ve vill do it again – until ve get it RRIGHTTT!” But at its best ours is the most collaborative form. When a director is given the chance to speak with passion and clarity about the action of an excellent play with a group of artists who can take that vision and give it brilliant form in each of their crafts, something is created that no individual could imagine alone. I’m really glad I got to work on this play with these people. Thanks for sharing it with us.

—Peter DeLaurier

Leonard C. Haas (Kemp) Vigil marks Lenny’s (long overdue) debut in a Lantern Theater Company production. He was last seen here in 1812 Productions’ Daughters of Genius. He has performed at the Arden, the Wilma, Bristol Riverside Theatre, Act II Playhouse, Luna Theatre, Mum Puppettheatre, Hedgerow Theatre, Cape May Stage, Simpatico Theatre Project, and People’s Light and Theatre Co., where he has performed in over 30 productions as a member of their

resident acting company. Proud accomplishments include appearing in two independent films (cellar and Lebanon, PA), playing Norman in The Dresser, Hamlet in Hamlet (both at Bristol Riverside Theatre), and receiving a Barrymore Award for the role of Henry in People’s Light’s production of The Fantasticks. He will be performing at The New Victory Theatre in NYC this fall in a production of The Little Prince. He would like to lovingly and humbly dedicate this performance to the memory of his Dad, who was one of his biggest fans and who never missed a show.

Ceal Phelan (Grace) is a long-time member of the ensemble at People’s Light and Theatre Company. This season, she has been seen at Lantern Theater Company in Uncle Vanya, at the Delaware Theatre Company in Blithe Spirit, and at Hedgerow in Bernice/Butterfly. She teaches acting at Temple U, People’s Light, and Hedgerow. She and her husband Peter DeLaurier are two of the co-founders of the Delaware Theatre Company.

Morris Panych (Playwright), a native of Edmonton, Alberta, is arguably Canada’s most celebrated playwright and director. His plays have garnered countless awards including two Governor General’s Literary Awards for Drama (for The Ends of the Earth and Girl in the Goldfish Bowl), fourteen Jessie Richardson Awards, and five Dora Mavor Moore Awards. Productions of the much-lauded Vigil, Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, Gordon, The Trespassers, and Lawrence and Holloman are being mounted throughout Canada, the US, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. His plays have been produced in over a dozen languages. Mr. Panych has directed over 90 productions across Canada.

Peter DeLaurier (Director) directed Lantern Theater Company’s Sizwe Bansi is Dead two years ago. He is an actor: Lantern - Uncle Vanya, Skylight, QED, Underneath the Lintel (Barrymore Award), People’s Light- a 20+ year ensemble member (Barrymore Award- King Lear; nominations- Man From Nebraska, Six Characters in Search of an Author, In the Blood, et al); playwright (Barrymore nomination- Anne of Green Gables), et al. and director. He is an Artistic Associate at PLT and was Artistic Director of New Stage Theatre in Jackson, MS, where he directed one of numerous productions of his A Christmas Carol, among many other plays. With his wife, actress and director Ceal Phelan, and others, he co-founded the Delaware Theatre Company (where he directed ACC, Talley’s Folly, and others) and First Stage. For Ceal.

WHO’S WHO

Page 7: Vigil (May 19 - June 12, 2011)

Nick Embree (Scenic Designer) is thrilled to work with this great team on this very clever show. (How often do you get to design a Death Machine?) Nick is a freelance set designer with design credits at many Philadelphia and regional theaters. He is proud to have served as Lantern’s resident Set Designer, and he still manages to do about one set a year here (most recently, Scapin). Nick is the head of the B.F.A. Theater Design and Technology Program in the Ira Brind School of Theater Arts, at the University of the Arts, in Philadelphia. Nick is married to Lighting Designer and UARTS production manager Janet Embree, and they live in Germantown in an old house with a couple of cats.

Natalia de la Torre (Costume Designer) Originally from Massachusetts, Natalia graduated from Temple University in 2006. Past credits: Punch (Miro Dance for PIFA); A Skull in Connemara (Lantern Theater Company); Neighborhood 3 (Azuka); The Pillowman (Bootless Artworks); The Rocky Horror Show (Fringe 2010); The Miser (Commonwealth Classic Theatre Company); Purr, Pull, Reign (Johnny Showcase and the Lefty Lucy Cabaret); The Little Dog Laughed and House of Yes (Flashpoint); Evie’s Waltz and This is Our Youth (Simpatico Theatre Project); Naked Cocktail and Very Merry Children’s…(both Brat Productions). When not designing, she snips threads at Viv Pickle Custom Handbags in Old City. Coming up next: Heavy Metal Dance Fag (Tribe of Fools, Fringe 2011). Thanks to Beckah, Becca, Becky, Lenny & Ceal & Peter, and William Shatner.

Janet Embree (Lighting Designer) has designed lights for many past Lantern productions. Some favorites are The Hothouse, Richard III, and Master Harold…and the boys. She has designed lights for many area theaters including: 1812 Productions, Freedom Theatre, Act II Playhouse, Bristol Riverside Theatre, Walnut Street Theatre, and University of the Arts, where she serves as Production Manager for the Brind School of Theater. She is pleased to have had the opportunity to collaborate with this outstanding group of artists. She especially enjoys collaborating with set designer Nick Embree on productions, a lifelong house renovation, and cat wrangling.

Christopher Colucci (Composer / Sound Designer) makes sound and music as a theater artist, composer, and guitarist. Last season he received Barrymore Awards in both the Outstanding Sound Design (The Long Christmas Ride Home, Azuka Theatre) and Outstanding Original Music (The Breath of Life, Lantern Theater Company) categories. Noteworthy productions this season include Amadeus, The Glass Menagerie, and The 39 Steps, all at Walnut Street Theatre; as well as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (People’s Light and Theatre Company); In the Next Room, or the vibrator play (The Wilma Theater); Charlotte’s Web (Two River Theatre), Run Mourner, Run (Flashpoint) and Death of a Salesman (Milwaukee Rep). Upcoming: a trip to the Prague Quadrennial for Theater Design in June.
