Distance: How do we measure length and width?
Distance is how far it is between two things. It could be how long, wide, or tall something is.
Accurate is how correct something is.
1. Directions: Measure the length of the table (the long way) and the width of the table (the short way).
Table length(how long)
Table width(how wide)
hands hands
straws straws
cm cm
2. Compare the class’s answers. Which is the most accurate (correct) way to measure length and width? Explain your answer.
3. Give an example of when you needed to know the distance of something.
3
Estimating: How do we estimate and measure length?
To estimate means to make a good guess

2. Why might estimating be a useful thing to do?
4
* Give an example of when you have estimated the length or width of something.

2. Look at the differences between your estimates and your measurements. What do you notice? Does it get easier to estimate the more you do it? Explain.
6
* Find more things to estimate and measure.

Mass
*Mass is how heavy something is. We weigh mass with grams.
Object Estimated Mass
Measured Mass
Difference(subtract)
2. When would you want to know the mass (weight) of something?
3. When might you need to estimate the mass of something?

2. How did you find the mass of the water in the sponge?
3. Were you surprised by the mass the sponge absorbed? Why or why not?

4. Follow the same steps from above to find the mass of the water in the containers.ContainerNumber

Food Kilometers
1kilometer = 1,000 meters
1. How far did your food travel?FoodLocation
Distance in kilometers (km)
2. What is one good thing about food traveling from far away?
3. What is one bad thing about food traveling from far away?

Measuring Capacity
Capacity is how much fits in a container
We can measure the capacity of a container in milliliters (ml)

Cup, mark B
Cup, mark C
Cup, mark D
2. When might you want to know how much fits in a container?
Volume
16
Volume is the 3D space something takes up.
1. Pour a volume of 15ml in each container. Draw and label each below.
2. Why does the volume of the liquid look different, depending on the container?
3. Pour a volume of 15ml into the cup. Pour a volume of 30ml into the second cup. Weigh the mass of the 15ml cup.
17
Mass of 15ml cup:______________________
Mass of 30ml cup:______________________
4. Which cup has a greater mass? Explain why.
5.
Capacity Versus Volume
18
I recently opened a can of soda and noticed that it was not completely full. You may have noticed the same thing. I started wondering if the soda company was really giving me my money’s worth. The label on the can says 355 ml, but does that refer to the capacity of the can, or the volume of soda in the can?
How can we find out if 355ml is the can’s capacity (how much fits when the can is full) or how much soda they actually sell you (the volume of soda)?
1. My plan to find the answer will be____________________________
2. My answer is_____________________________________________
3. My strategy for finding the answer was________________________
4. Why wouldn’t the soda company fill the can all the way?
*When would you need to know the volume of a liquid (like water)? Give an example.
