Assignment title: Food Fight!

Scenario:

As an artist and designer you need to develop your skills in material exploration and visual recording. This is the backbone to everything we do. Throughout this project you will experiment with a range of materials and techniques, and review how these can be used within your own artwork. Your project with culminate in the production of an illustrated recipe using the technique of your choice.

Task 1: Primary and secondary research

Explore visual communication within Art and Photography, exploring the theme of Food:

Take at least 30 photographs of food Find at least 30 secondary images of food using Pinterest Complete you summer holiday task

Task 2: Artists Research As part of your research you need to look at the work of others. Pick at least 4 artists (use the presentation on www.bcotart.weebly.com for a range of artists and designers you could look at). Make sure you reference any books/websites/articles/sources you have used.

Answer the following questions about their work: What is the title and date of the work? What materials/techniques have they used? What do you think is the meaning, mood, emotion, message they are trying to communicate? How are they visually communicating? (Through imagery/colour/texture/composition) What if anything could have influenced this artwork? (Time, place, country, politics, wealth) How have they used formal elements in their work? (Colour/line/tone/texture/shape/pattern) What is your opinion of their work? How could this impact/influence your own work?

Task 3: Material experimentsThis is your opportunity to learn new materials and techniques and to be experimental in your mark making and interpretation of this theme. We will explore the following techniques throughout a series of workshops and lessons:

Drawing & perspective Painting & colour theory Digital photography Photograms Chemigrams Heat press printing Mono printing Ceramics & scraffitto Laser cutting

You need to document (through photos, videos or drawings) and annotate your work throughout each of your lessons:

What techniques, processes and materials have you used? What is your opinion of the technique, process and material? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this work? How have you/could you develop it further? How have you worked safely? What are you visually communicating? (Mood, meaning, context etc…) How have you used formal elements in the work? (Colour/line/tone/texture/shape/pattern) How will it impact on the development of your project and final piece?

Task 4 – final pieceAs the culmination of this project and your material experiments we would like you to select and illustrate a recipe. In order to do this you must:

Find at least 5 examples of illustrated recipes, annotate these: Why have you chosen them? What is your opinion of them? How can they influence/inspire your work? How effective is their visual communication?

Refine your idea: Select your own recipe (including a minimum of 5 ingredients) Carry out any additional research linked directly to your recipe Select which materials you want to use

Produce a plan: Produce at least 3 annotated versions of your recipe layout, (this will include researching

colour, font, composition, materials, scale), it must be A4 single or double sided. Think about who your target audience is, who will be using your recipe? How can you design it to suit them?

Test your materials: Produce additional material samples that directly relate to your idea and development.

Document and annotate these. How effective are these samples? How do they inform the development of your final piece? Do you need to change/adapt your idea as result of these samples?

Produce a final piece: Produce a final piece, it must be A4 single or double sided. Any 3D materials must be scanned

or photographed as part of your final submission. Document and annotate the making of your final piece. Take photographs through each stage

of the work, including equipment and tools used and health and safety measures

Task 5 – Evaluation

It is important that you evaluate your work at the end of every project so that you can identify what you have done well and what you can improve for future projects.

Your evaluation must be at least 600 words

How have you developed your ideas? How have they changed throughout the project? Which artists have you used for inspiration? How have they influenced your final piece? Why did you choose this colour and design? How effective do you think they have been? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this project? Opinion, what do you think of your work? How have your skills developed throughout this project? Have you learnt a new techniques?

Are there any you have struggled with? How have you worked safely throughout this project? What mediums have you used and why? How effective have they been? How well do you feel you have met the project brief? How have you used formal elements in your final piece? How have you visually communicated? What is the mood, meaning, intention of your final piece? What would you change or improve about your final piece? What do you intend to improve upon for the next project?
