British Schools' Modern Biathlon Championships 2017

17 biathletes, from years 5 to 8, qualified for the National finals of the British Schools' Modern Biathlon Championships. As a result, this weekend 12 children competed at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in the finals. It was an early start for the both the girls and boys on Saturday and Sunday morning respectfully, who were full of anticipation for an eventful, yet testing day. The 800/1600m run took place on the track, which was a welcome change from the tarmac area used in the finals last year. The swimming took place in the pool and although at first look the 50m pool was a daunting challenge for some, all the children revelled in the opportunity to compete in this National Final. Across the two days both the parents and teachers were impressed with the children’s’ commitment and determination towards each event, they demonstrated true Downsend spirit throughout! There were some stunning performances in the pool, with a large number of the pupils achieving a personal best. Out on trackside conditions were tough going and the competition was especially strong. Once again a number of personal bests were achieved on the track with children improving their rankings across both days. The whole team over both days are to be commended for the efforts they demonstrated over the weekend, once again making the school proud. Thank you to the parents for their support on the day and throughout the entire competition. Thanks also go to Mrs Crowe and Mrs Sehgal for their support out on the track and with training. For full results, please see the GB Pentathlon website.

Inter House Swimming

The last few weeks have seen the Inter House Swimming Gala’s take place rounding off the swimming for a number of year groups. Year 6 were the first year group to take to the pool where Norbury were victorious. Later the same week Year 3 participated in their gala and Headley emerged the winners. It was great to see the enthusiasm of all the pupils alongside the fantastic progress that has been made this year. As we headed into the penultimate week of term Years 2, 4, 5, 7 & 8 took to the pool. All houses were fighting for the overall title which at the start of the week could have gone to any of the houses. In Year 4 and 5 Ranmore were the winners, whilst in Years 7 & 8 Headley took the title! The final gala of 2017 was closely fought by the children from Year 2. Strong swimming from all the boys and girls whether it be over widths or lengths, individual medley’s or relays all the boys and girls should be proud of their achievements. The overall winners for this year were Ranmore!

Don’t forget – “if you’re not getting wet, you aren’t scoring points!” Well done all.

Hockey

Surrey Hockey Standing on the pitch side of the U10 Surrey Hockey Tournament last Wednesday, I was reminded of the quote "There is no such thing as bad weather only unsuitable clothing". As we coached the Cup and Plate teams through 4 seasons of weather in 3 hours, it struck me that despite soaking wet through, many children having blue lips and hands so cold that gripping their slippery sticks was proving difficult, everyone was still totally focussed on their hockey! To allow myself and Miss Ceci to coach both teams who played back to back with no breaks across the morning, the girls, ably led by their captains, dived in and out of their changing rooms making sure they returned back for their next games with Swiss like timing. These things alone made myself and Miss Ceci very proud and we haven't even talked about the hockey yet! The tournaments for both Cup and Plate teams were played in a round robin style which means no second chances if you have a bad game. Both teams played some impressive hockey during the day, defending intelligently and attacking with speed, depth and width meant we caused problems for every opponent we played. The final results saw Downsend teams feature in the medals for both tournaments. The Plate team came 3rd overall and picked up the bronze medals with the Cup team managing one better by finishing second overall and the silver medals. A fantastic achievement in severely challenging conditions. This tournament marked the official end of the hockey season which has seen Downsend U10 teams do exceptionally well. Next stop Summer hockey for years 4 and 5 to make sure we keep the standard high and our opposition worried! U10 Surrey Hockey Cup Team: Josie D (GK), Rhianna P, Elizabeth H, Bibi W, Chloe M (c), Natasha C (c), Annie T, Elspeth W.

U10 Surrey Hockey Plate Team: Millie M (GK), Bronwen R, Mia H (c), Honey C, Geraldine H, Aryana M, Gracie N (c), Daisy W, Bijou C-S

Rugby

National Sevens Rugby Festival Last week the U13 Rugby 7’s team took part in the National Schools Sevens at Roehampton. The first match was against Dulwich College Prep, who they had beaten in a close encounter earlier in the season proved to be a real cracker with both teams playing some great rugby. Physical and skilful, the Downsend boys played as a team and gave an excellent account of themselves in a game which ended as a draw with each team scoring 5 tries. An hour later they took on King’s House and played another superb game, showing how much progress they had made through the season, winning by four tries to one. After another long break Wetherby Prep were the final opponents in the group. Ideally, this should have been the easier of the group games. However, with an over-confident approach and the element of team work disappearing fast, the Downsend team went ‘off the rails’, proving slow to react against a team which the other teams had already beaten quite convincingly. A steady ‘rethink’ saw the boys playing a much better standard in their next game against Cumnor House and despite some strong running by the opposition, Downsend won by 3 tries to 2. The final game against Monkton from the South West was an enjoyable win by 6 tries to 3 with the boys back to their best. Overall, the boys in the Downsend Sevens team should be proud of themselves throughout the

sevens season, playing both as individuals and certainly as a team. They have learnt from every single performance and will certainly go on to their next schools with a huge amount of encouragement and experience gained throughout the term’s tournaments.

Squad from: Captain Josh L, Dan G, James M, Toby R, Jake B, Leyton T, Anthonie K, Oliver C-W, Billy P, Leon M, Jackson R, Yuvi S, Fraser L, Ollie C, Ollie G.
