The Fergie Jenkins Celebrity Classic With a New Date a

    Feel

A Spring Spent in Phoenix, Arizona

From the ArchivesA LOOK BACK AT WHAT SOME OF NORTH AMERICAS GREATEST SPORTS

WRITERS HAD TO SAY ABOUT FERGIE JENKINS

    MOSTCONSISTENTWINNINGPITCHER

    PUBLISHED IN THE MONTREAL STAR,

REPRINTED IN BASEBALL DIGESTBY: JOHN ROBERTSON FEBRUARY 1970

Major League baseball gets such saturationcoverage that there should be no such thing

as an unsung super star, right? Especially when

that super star is a pitcher.

For example, no one is going to say that

Tom Seaver hasnt gotten his due recognition

or being baseballs best pitcher o the year

(25-7) in 1969. And Dennis McLain of the Tigers

(31-6) has been suitably enshrined for his 1968heroics, with Jim Lonborg of the Red Sox (22-9),

    everybodys hero in 1967.

And or day-to-day greatness, well BobGibson and Juan Marichal are up there

alongside McLain, and now Seaver, in a class by

    themselves.

But wait a minute! Schools not out quite yet.

Ive just spend a very dry, dusty aternoon

wading through major league pitching records, and the resulting revelations might surprise

    you.

For example, who is the only pitcher in the

majors to win 20 games or more in each o

the last three seasons, complete more than 20each year over that same span, pitch more total

innings, start more games, and record morestrikeouts than any o his contemporaries?

No, it wasnt Gibson, McLain or Marichal. It

    was Canadas own Ferguson Jenkins.

Okay, so maybe Im waving the ag a little,

but i Tom Seaver can be heralded as baseballs

All-American boy, why cant we do a little

    crowing too?

Ive been waiting patiently since the season

ended or one baseball writer somewhere

to give Fergie the recognition he deserves.

My hackles started to rise way back in spring

training when Sports Illustrated did a large

layout on baseballs present-day iron-men andignored him completely.

I bristled when Fergies own manager, LeoDurocher, publicly ripped him or not putting

out when he got clobbered in a crucial game

during the Cubscollapse in the stretch. When

he notched his 20th victory in September, none

o the wire services even bothered to mention

that he had achieved the milestone or the thirdconsecutive season his only three seasons,

incidentally, as a starter in the majors.

But the last straw was a recent story in the

Sporting News which saluted Chicagos Bill

Hands, an excellent young pitcher, as the Cubs

big stopper in 1969, with a snide inference that

Jenkins didnt do the job when it mattered

    down the stretch.

Now I dont suggest that Jenkins was better

than Seaver in 1969, Gibson or Marichalin 1968, or even Mike McCormick in 1967.

Likewise, McLains record dwared his in the

last two seasons, and Lonborg had a ar better

    percentage in 1967.

But day in day out, over the last three

seasons, Jenkins pitched longer, otener and

more consistently than each one o the so-

called super stars, and its about time somebodycame out and said so.

Jenkins not only leads in total games started,

innings pitched and strikeouts, he ties Marichalfor the National League lead in wins with

61, and hes the only pitcher among himself,

Marichal, Seaver, McLain and Gibson to win

and complete 20 games in all three seasons.Granted, a broken leg hampered Gibson in

1967, and Marichal had arm trouble that year.

And certainly Fergies overall ERA and games

lost ranks him th in those departments. But

or sheer durability, he tops them all.

Im not suggesting Jenkins is the best pitcher

in the majors. Im not suggesting that he was

in any o the three years mentioned. But I dobelieve that mid the oceans o publicity the

others have gotten or their exploits, that

    the 25-year-old righthander rom Chatham,

Ont., deserves a little more than he got rombaseballs horde of expert analysts in 1969.

Ater the ak he took rom his own manager

or the Cubsabysmal stretch showing, I

think its time that somebody went on recordcongratulating him or a job well done.

This past November the Foundation was forced

to cancel the Fergie Jenkins Celebrity Golf Classic held in

American supporters it meant not having the oppo rtu-

nity to take part in one o our most successul events o

the year. But with every closed door comes another op -

portunity. With the November tournament put on hold

the Foundation was able to schedule a similar tourna-

The tournament in February coincided perectlywith Cactus League Spring Training allowing many

o our celebrity guests to attend since many o them

would already be in the Phoenix area. This years tour-

Celebrities such as Rollie Fingers, Gaylord Perry,
