So Long Summer, Hello Fall!

Sometimes it’s the small things in life that make it a bit sweeter. We’ve always loved our Morgan Hill neighborhood and the cul-de-sac we live on — The Sac, as it’s been called by some.

There’s no doubt in our minds that we have some of the kindest neighbors ever-whether a smile and wave as we turn up our driveway, a neighbor willing to watch the kids playing outside as we run inside to check on dinner or a forgotten trash can brought out just in time to make the pick up—our neighbors are always providing reminders of how great the people who make up this community are.

One of the special events our neighborhood folks come together for is an annual Halloween Celebration—a pre-party of sorts that has been a great way to

celebrate as our children anxiously wait for nightfall’s sweet candy revelry. While we have fun activities and food, it is the Costume Parade for the kids that tops off the memorable night. It’s the simple sweetness of Morgan Hill

life that we love, and know you dotoo. Stay Connected Temecula…and reach out to us anytime at [email protected].

Cheers,

Lisa Tomaselli & Stephanie MantiplyCo-Founders, The View Morgan Hill

National Orthodontic Health Month is here to shine light on the benefits of orthodontic treatment and importance of seeing an orthodontic specialist to achieve a healthy, beautiful smile. It’s also a reminder that adults now account for nearly one in four patients receiving orthodontic treatment; and they’re just as likely as children and teens to run into Halloween candy temptations in October.

Advances in orthodontic treatment options allow for less frequent office visits and more discreet appliances – like clear aligners or tooth-colored ceramic brackets – so that adults can fit orthodontic treatment into their lifestyle. However, to ensure they do not require any emergency orthodontic fixes, adults should obey the following rules:

Avoid sticky situations. Stay away from hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy candy and snacks. These include hard or chewy candies, caramel, licorice, taffy, bubblegum (even the sugarless kind) and jelly beans. Careful with crunchiness. Patients want to steer away from hard-shelled peanut candies, nuts or nut-filled candies, taco chips and popcorn (especially un-popped kernels). And, whether in orthodontic treatment or not, never chew ice. Not all Halloween candy is off-limits. Good alternatives include soft chocolates, peanut butter cups or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties. The American Association of Orthodontists even offers orthodontic-friendly recipes for Halloween on its website at

http://www.mylifemysmile.org/pressroom.

Brushing and flossing are more important than ever during the Halloween season, when teeth may receive more exposure to sweets that can cause cavities. Orthodontic patients should be especially conscientious about brushing and flossing after consuming sugary or starchy foods.

Adults who are interested in learning more about their options can visit the American Association of Ortho-dontists’ website, www.mylifemysmile.org, for more information.

The Pursuit of Happiness and Great Smiles Meet Dr. Shawn Pesh…Your Neighborhood Orthodontist

Halloween Tips from Dr. Pesh..

Dr. Shawn Pesh is exactly where he wants to be. “I’ve always envisioned living and working in a community like Temecula.” says Dr. Pesh, a Morgan Hill resident and new principal of Pesh & Petrol Orthodontics – a full service orthodontic practice for children, teens and adults. After more than a decade of working in dental offices across Southern California, Dr. Pesh recently transitioned into his own orthodontic practice with three office locations serving the Temecula Valley. “Being a small business owner has been one of my dreams.” Now, at the helm, this highly trained orthodontic specialist who earned his doctorate from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry continues his mission to strive for excellence for his patients. For Dr. Pesh, “continuity of care” is vital, and “outstanding quality results” are a must. “We seek to pro-vide a five star experience for everyone. We have the highest of expectations for ourselves, and we believe this translates into the best experience and results for our patients and friends.” “We love Dr. Pesh and his super friendly staff. Our son who is 12 is in braces and I’m doing Invisalign® with Dr. Pesh. He is very knowledgeable, patient, and works great with kids. We highly recommend Dr. Pesh!” - Bibi Gonzales As a teen, Dr. Pesh received orthodontic treatment and can personally attest to the value of a healthy smile. He recalls, “I don’t ever remember struggling with self-esteem, but I definitely remember feeling more confident after braces.” In addition to traditional braces, Dr. Pesh offers Invisalign® for both teens and adults. He says it is never too early or too late to inquire about orthodontic treatment. His patients range from age 7 to 70. “It’s truly a privilege to help families smile together. In my experience, beautiful smiles not only open doors of opportunity, but they can also break down barriers between people.” According to Dr. Pesh, his path to success didn’t align as he imagined it would. As a California teen, he had a love for sports and things came relatively easy. Shawn was a star athlete, student body president, and valedictorian. When he embarked on higher education, he set his sights on becoming an orthopedic surgeon and discovered it wasn’t for him. “I realized I didn’t have the passion for sports medicine as much as I had a passion for sports,” he recalls. For the first time in his young life he stumbled. However, he rebounded and discovered his passion for dentistry and later for his wife Amanda. Fast forward to today, he’s acquired a successful orthodontic practice and he and his wife are raising two beautiful young daughters, Chloé and Stella, in a community he loves—and a community he makes a priority to give back to through the Smile for Lifetime Foundation (www.s4l.org) and their Community Mouthguard Program. This Halloween, his offices will focus efforts to raise funds for Operation Gratitude (www.operationgratitude.com) — a non-profit that sends care packages to US Service Members in hostile regions. From November 3rd through the 7th, Pesh & Petrol Orthodontics will donate $1 for every pound of candy brought into their offices, continuing their vision of bringing a smile to someone’s face. For more info about Pesh & Petrol Ortho-dontics, please visit their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/smiletogether951) and/or practice website (www.smile951.com). Dr. Pesh’s Temecula office is conveniently located at 31537 Rancho Pueblo Rd, Temecula, CA 92592 (next to Rancho Christian Community Church).

While the benefits of participating in organized sports are numerous, the risk of injury is extremely high. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 2.6 million children (ages 0-19), visit the Emergency Department each year for sports and recreation related activities. Musculoskeletal injuries are also the single most important reason for primary physician office visits. However, the statistics shouldn’t scare us, or our children, into living a sedentary lifestyle, void of competition and self-discipline. Instead, they should encourage us to take the extra steps to prevent injury and maintain safety while enjoying the perks of

being active! Here are a few tips to safely engaging in sports and recreational activities;

Take time to warm up! Start any activity with a low impact, light to moderate intensity, movement (i.e. walking). After 5-10 minutes, your body is ready for stretching. In fact, an optimal time to stretch may be at the end of the activity, when muscles are at their warmest! Stretching should never take “back seat” to any type of activity or exercise. Thoroughly stretching leads to

increased flexibility of the joints and muscles, and therefore allows for enhanced range of motion. Blood flow to the muscles is also increased during stretching, making them moreefficient and improving performance.

Now is not the time to try and be a fashionista! From head to toe, the proper equipment and attire is necessary, no matter how awkward it may feel or look! Sport- specific protective safety gear is essential for preventing serious injuries, or reducing the severity of an injury that may occur. Helmets, mouth guards, safety pads, proper footwear and athletic shoes, and protective

eye- wear are all items that should be considered depending on the type of activity. It is also important to know when items should be replaced so that the safety and efficacy of the equipment is maintained.

Listen to your body. Pain, fatigue, dizziness, etc… are all signs that our bodies are capable of exhibiting when something isn’t quite right. Often, recognizing the signs that the body is under stress is easy. The difficulty is taking a moment to stop and recover. Allowing your body to recover may take minutes, days, or even weeks, depending on the situation. Whether you experience

an injury or not, everyone should allow at least one day a week for the body to recover from hard and strenuous physical activity. Recovery allows our muscle and tissue to repair and build strength.

As with everything, never underestimate the importance of proper nutrition, hydration, and rest, when preventing and treating injury! Taking these steps will allowyou to enjoy the perks of leading an active and healthy lifestyle in a fun and safe way!

Volleyball is one of the fastest growing girls sports in the country. The NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA all together offer more athletic scholarships for girls volleyball than any other sport. Volleyball is a great sport for many reasons. Perhaps, the greatest reason is that it’s a social sport. It requires players to communicate and cooper-ate in many different ways and to be successful you truly have to work together physically, mentally and verbally. It is a very social game with super hi-energy. You can play indoor, outdoor, on sand, on grass, or in a pool, with girls or boys or mixed. Volleyball is a great sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. Forza 1 Volleyball is a new club here in Temecula that provides opportunities for players at ALL levels from ages 8-18 years old for girls and boys. I absolutely love cheering on Friday nights and being a cheerleader at Great Oak makes the whole experience so much better. Our football team and Red Wave section are amazing and being able to contribute to that is so much fun. The atmosphere at our football games is so positive and full of energy. It’s such a great opportunity to be able to cheer on the Wolfpack and I wouldn’t want to spend my Friday nights anywhere else.-Madalyn Kanow-GOHS Senior Student & Captain of Varsity Cheer Squad (along with Captain Kelsey Downing)

I’ve been playing football since I was seven, and I love the game. I love how fun it is and I also like to compete. While play-ing the game, you begin to create bonds with your teammates. They are basically your brothers. You play for them because they’re counting on you. You can’t win the game alone, you have to play as a team, and that’s why I love football so much. I thank God for allowing me to play the sport. Friday night lights are the best. Great Oak has the best fans, and the student section (RED WAVE) is awesome. It’s crazy how many people come out to cheer us on. It motivates me and my team to play better. It’s just a great time. I look forward to it every week. I just can’t wait to get on the field and play. -Demetric Felton-GOHS Junior Student & Varsity Footplayer. Plays slot receiver, running back and defensive back.

The Temecula Tomahawks Lacrosse Club a boys and girls league-was formed in 2012 as a 501c3 non-profit organization by a group of dedicated lacrosse parents who all shared the same goal of forming a new lacrosse club in Temecula with the expressed purpose of having a more competitive team and overall atmosphere for those lacrosse kids that are interested in playing at a higher level here in Southern California. The philosophy behind the Temecula Tomahawks is to have teams play together year round in tournaments and structured league programs. Brian Hoover, the league’s Director states, “It is our opinion that having lacrosse athletes play together year round will not only maximize each player’s skills, but will also allow them to enjoy the synergy and success that only a tight knit group of friends and players can accomplish,” says Hoover. For more information visit www.temeculalacrosse.com or call Kerry Hoover 909-772-3121.

Friday Night Lights are ON in Temecula and they are shining bright at Great Oak High School Stadium - Home to the Wolfpack. For the 2014-2015 Football season, nearly 70 Varsity players take the field for Friday night home games to play in one of the toughest leagues in the nation. And there to witness them play and elevate the game experience—4000 exhilarated fans to fill the stadium seats, along with the amazing GOHS band and spirited Cheer Squad. It’s expected to be a big year for GOHS Football! Come out and support Wolfpack Athletics! Football is just one of more than 20 sport teams at GOHS. Fall Flora SplendorSouthern California residents know that our early fall season is different from that of the rest of the country. October brings a much welcomed temperature drop off after the seemingly unending scorching days of September. Most years, it is by no means cool in October and this presents some unique gardening challenges and opportunities. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

SECOND SPRING: Plants often find this time of year confusing. Many varieties will experience a false spring due to shortening daylight hours combined with warm soil and air temperatures. It’s not unusual to see a second bloom out of a Redbud or fruitless flowering tree. Enjoy the second set of blooms; there is nothing wrong with your tree.

COLORFUL LEAVES: Even though we don’t see as much of the bright, bold fall foliage as places like New York and Boston, we do still have some lovely trees to enjoy as early as September. Chinese Pistache, Liquid Amber, Flowering Pear and Crepe Myrtle Trees all put on a lovely show at this time of year. Later in the year others will

follow before dropping their leaves. Fall is a great time to plant trees so if you are looking for fall color next year, this is a perfect moment to get planting!

COOL SEASON ANNUALS: October is a terrific time to plant fall annual flowers, particularly if you have pottery that gets seasonally rotated. A traditional inclusion is Chrysanthemums. These beautiful fluffy flowers come in a rainbow of colors; however, reds, gold, oranges and rusts are a wonderful way to bring the rich tones of fall to your garden. These can later be changed to plants that will provide you with color through the winter.

ROSES: From late October on, there is no real need to spend time on rose maintenance. Most re-blooming rose bushes put on a fantastic fall display. Let them bloom as much as they’d like and only remove spent flowers if they disturb you. Many roses give off colorful hips in the fall but if all spent roses are removed, you will miss this secondary display. Don’t forget, before we know it, we will be cutting the bushes back severely for the winter so careful pruning at this time of year is not needed.

Bill Cosby and I were classmates at Temple University in 1961. He lived in Philadelphia’s low income projects with his mother who cleaned houses to support her family of three sons, Bill being the oldest. Bill wore torn jeans to class much before they became a fad.

The course we shared, Human Physiology was taught by Miss Honneker at Temple University. I can visualize her now as if were just yesterday. Miss Honneker short, plump, middle-aged dedicated to her job. She’d raise her voice when emphasizing a fact and wave her fists in the air for emphasis along with other unusual physical and facial gestures.

Bill would show up before class and stand between the lectern and blackboard. He imitated her perfectly substituting his own interpretation of human physiology. He drew the digestive tract upside down on the blackboard. And wrote words coming from (you know where) We laughed so hard we feared throwing up.

Word spread! Soon the lecture hall 45 minutes before class filled to capacity with students. Gut wrenching uncontrollable nonstop laughter pervaded the room. Once, Miss Honneker entered the room and found all the students wiping tears from their eyes, except for Bill. He sat upright, straight faced with his hands folded in his lap ready for class. Miss Honneker, convinced that the hydrogen-sulfide fumes from the next door chemistry lab caused our eyes to tear. She had us change classrooms. We held our stomachs and doubled up as we marched to our new quarters.

As Miss Honneker exhibited her unique mannerisms that Bill had imitated, bursts of laughter erupted in different sections of the lecture hall. More than once, Miss Honneker warned us of dire consequences from not taking her course seriously. Those consequences came to fruition at final exam time. Miss Honneker handed out three blue books, each containing five blank pages to be filled with answers to questions about human physiology.

We students looked at each other with horror, until loud snores emanated from the rear of the room. Bill Cosby had sent us his last gift -laughter. Bill quit school that year. He worked as a stand-up comic in different clubs until his talent exploded onto the world stage. I feel certain that we his former classmates, no matter where life has taken us, privileged to share that eventful period of time in our lives with Bill, smile when we see him and take just a little bit of pride that in some small way, we had provided him the confidence to devote his life to bring laughter to the world.

A Quick and Easy Holiday Hit

For a special treat your guests will love, try this Alsatian Onion Tartby Stan Ginsberg

Like a lot of folks, with the fall and winter holiday season fast approaching, my thoughts have turned to all the entertaining my wife and I will be doing, and the parties at our friends’ homes where we’re asked to contribute to the groaning board. One of my favorites, and it has been for years, is this onion tart from Alsace, in the northeast of France, where it meets Germany. With just a little time and a few simple ingredients – flour, shortening, butter, eggs, onions and cream –this sweet, rich and aromatic crowd-pleaser will make you a star in your kitchen.

Here’s how to do it:Crust:The most important thing to remember about making a flaky pie crust is to keep all the ingredients cold and to handle it as little as possible. Ingredients:1 cups chilled all-purpose flour (I prefer unbleached, but any will do)¼ tsp salt½ cup vegetable shortening, chilled ¼ cup ice water

Method:Mix the flour and salt and add the shortening. Using two knives or a pastry blender, cut the shortening into the flour until the shortening pieces are the size of small green peas. Sprinkle on the ice water as evenly as possible and use a fork to blend. The dough will still be floury and lumpy; don’t worry about it, that’s how it’s supposed to look. Transfer the dough to a floured work surface or a piece of parchment paper and roll it out to about an 11”-12” circle. Carefully transfer the dough to a 10” tart pan or 9” round layer cake pan and crimp the ends to trim. Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork and bake in a 350° oven for 10 minutes. Remove and cool.FillingIngredients:2 Tbs butter 1 cup heavy cream4 large onions, sliced thin 2 eggs, beaten1 Tbs vegetable oil Ground nutmegSalt and pepper to taste

Method:Melt the butter in a large skillet and sauté the onions over low-medium heat until they’re soft and well browned. Add salt and pepper to taste. The onions will be very fragrant and sweet. It’s important to keep the heat fairly low to avoid burning and bitterness. When they’re done, take them off the heat and let cool.

Mix the heavy cream and eggs, along with salt, pepper and a dash of nutmeg.Brush the bottom and sides of the crust with the vegetable oil and spread the sautéed onions evenly, then pour in the cream-egg mixture. Finish with a sprinkling of nutmeg. Bake in a 350° oven for 30-35 minutes, until the top of the tart begins to brown. Serve warm. Note: You can prepare this recipe a day or two in advance, keep it refrigerated and reheat in a 200° oven for 15-20 minutes.

Halloween Saftey TipsOn Halloween, we stay up late, we eat candy and we dress up in costumes we wouldn’t usually wear. While FUN is the name of the night, for the sake of our children and others we cannot fully throw caution to the wind. With a few mindful safety tips, we can still party like Rock Stars while keeping our trick-or- treaters and party guests safe. Here are some very helpful safety tips from the Center for Disease Control (CDC):

Decorating Safety•Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could result in falls.

•Keep candle-lit jack o’lanterns and luminaries away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended.

Costume Safety•Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.

•Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation•Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.

•Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.

•Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.

Trick or treating Safety•Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

•Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don’t run from house to house. •Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.

•Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. •Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Don’t stop at dark

houses. Never accept rides from strangers.

Food/Candy Safety•Provide healthier treats for trick-or-treaters such as low-calorie treats and drinks. For party guests, offer a variety of fruits, vegetables, and cheeses.

•Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount

of treats you eat. Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.
